After a week on the island with rather limited food options, I was getting homesick and needed some noodle soup. This really hit the spot especially because I was nauseous all day. I was really craving soup so I'm so glad we stumbled upon this place. I don't want to mislead anyone--By LA standards, I'd rate it 2.5-3 stars. I'm Sino-Vietnamese and grew up with Vietnamese food so I'm picky when it comes to pho. The soup was a little blander than I'm used to but it was perfect tonight given my nausea. I got the pho combination and they definitely don't skimp on the meat. By island standards, I'd give it a solid 4 stars. I added an extra star because we actually got there about 20 minutes after closing and they still seated us. We didn't realize they were closed because the open sign was still on. It wasn't until we saw the hours listed on the door that we realized they were supposed to be closed. We ordered whole fish. We were told the fish was tilapia and a lot of bones. What we found out was that the fish was skin and bones but no flesh. it came with a choice of rice or noodles. This place seemed to be a favorite with locals because it was packed and they had so many pick up orders it looked like they could hardly keep up but they were! Pho Kapaa is located in a shopping center, free ample parking. We didn't have to wait but by the time we left several parties were waiting for a table. This is not a "fine dining" set up. This is a local restaurant that serves excellent food at reasonable prices. It was challenging to decide what to eat because everything looked so good but we landed on the vegan pho and the bun w lemongrass chicken and egg roll, both were flavorful and generous portions. Wanted pho so bad after long day of sight seeing . So I asked the hotel front desk for authentic and close pho place to the hotel. Oh boy, probably the worst tourist trap pho place ever! $20 for pho combo that worth $10 in my eyes for the small quantity and warm broth. Scallops bacon wrap came with 4 half size pieces!!! Not sure if they are trying to tailor their food to what they think the community wants/an American palate, if they are, they are doing a disservice. Authentic pho is much more flavorful, complex and enjoyable by Vietnamese and Americans alike . The service and ambiance was not proportionate to the price. In addition, I am shocked they charged me nearly $7 for pickled sliced onion. Pickled onion is usually complimentary upon request. $7 is criminal. Still would recommend. NOTE- If you're an eater, DONT ORDER SUPER SIZE (+$9.00)- you'll get the exact same amount as a regular bowl, with NO extra meat. Just a bit more noodles in a larger bowl. We even asked about not having extra meat and the waiter *ensured* it was in there. But before we ate anything, we counted the pieces of meat in the regular bowl, and the super size bowl, and it was the EXACT same!! Kind of disappointing, but whatever. Pho! In Kapaa! Finding this Vietnamese restaurant was great on Kauai, since I had been craving Pho since the day before. I guess you would call me a pho junkie. Being that said, I thought that the reviews here were kind of the same. It was just okay. I tended to say the same. The Pho itself was delicious and the service was simple, but just average you would find in any Vietnamese restaurant in Hawaii. I came here on a recent Saturday afternoon after picking up my race packet @ the 2014 Kauai marathon and needed that Pho fix. You know how it is when you need that daily fix. Talk about coffee lovers! I guess it's how it is with addicts. :) Pho Kapaa is located in the heart of Kapaa at the Kailua Village Shopping Center in Kapaa, kind of borders on Wailua, but Kapaa all the same. The parking situation can be a mixed bag of busy and not so busy, but there are plenty of parking here. This Vietnamese restaurant very much accepts major credit cards, which is awesome as always. The restaurant itself is relatively small, simple and clean. Several artworks are displayed and the decor is good. Prices here are consistent with other Pho restaurants I have visited, although the server asked if I wanted the Super Bowl, which was 1/3 more meat and soup, but costs like $3.00 more. I declined about that, but wanted extra bean sprouts to make the meal extra crunchy. The ambiance here was quiet, calm, and comfortable. The place was kind of empty on a Saturday afternoon, but I'm glad that it was open. I also ordered an order of summer rolls, which was prepared on ordering. The taste was good and delicious. Dipping it into the shiracha infused peanut sauce made the world fade away. Pretty good bliss. With the Pho, I ordered the combination pho, which was already standard in the lexicon, so that was a tight meal to enjoy. They gave more broth than noodles, but that's probably the conventional practice. The broth itself was darker than most I have seen, so it was richer and more flavorful than the others. The extra bean sprouts proved to be one of the game changers here, but could've been better with extra noodles, but that can be done next time. I would say that the experience here at Pho Kapaa is positive and good, but average to be honest. The location is perfect in Kapaa, if you don't want to drive to the nearest Vietnamese restaurant, which is in Lihue. Recommended for a good meal if you are in the area, but wouldn't call it stellar or extraordinary. You get good service here, but find it just ordinary. 3.5 stars, but rounded to 4. Support local! First off they overcharged us, I didn't realize it until after the fact. My wife ordered the Chicken Pho and got vegetable broth instead of beef broth. Pho choices on Kauai for the time being are pretty limited but since we love the stuff, we decided to stop in and grab a bowl. Pho in NYC is hit and miss but given that we were on the West Coast (far West), maybe we would have some luck. The decor is typical for a pho restaurant - spartan but comfortable enough for diners to enjoy. We tried the shrimp summer rolls (just so-so) and we each got a bowl of pho. The broth here is pretty good, clean tasting and strong tasting. The noodles here were a bit disappointing since they used rehydrated Thai rice noodles instead of fresh pho noodles (possibly because they're simply not available on Kauai). My main gripe was that there wasn't nearly enough meat for 12 bucks - 2 beef balls, bits of tendon and maybe 3 slices of steak. Thats pretty measly by any standard. Flavors however were pretty on point. Service was friendly and quick. Prices are ok but I think the lack of competition allows them to charge this. Not a bad bite but could've been better. read more
