My car gave a warning that my alternator was not working appropriately but I couldn't take time off from work to coordinate dropping off the car during business hours. Phil's Excellent Auto Service was fantastic at letting me drop my car off and leave my keys in their mailbox to assess and fix my car. 2 days later I was able to pick up and pay for the services provided. Everything on the car was fixed and worked perfectly... for one year (atypical for a new battery and alternator). The battery was completely dead and the alternator stopped providing a charge where my car broke down on the side of the road. I took my car to a different mechanic and was told the alternator and battery placed in my car were cheap parts which lead to this premature failure as this is very atypical to fail with quality components within a year of the parts being replaced. Excellent service. I wish Phil's Excellent Auto Service would have been up front about the quality parts they were putting in. I would have happily paid extra for better quality components to avoid future headaches. read more

AC not working in my car, I know the issue and have the part to replace myself. Simple fix but need to remove the refrigerant first which, for environmental reasons, you have to have done by a technician. Called to ask about having the refrigerant evacuated from my AC system so I could do some repairs. Man who answered the phone said that they don't do that there and that they do not do that anywhere. Then he informed me, "if you take the refrigerant out the AC won't work young lady" ‍ So, if you happen to be a female, stay away or I guess have a man call for you. Although I wouldn't trust my car to someone who doesn't understand how an AC system works. read more

Never write reviews, but just wanted to acknowledge the good people that work at Phil's shop. I brought my car in to have an inspection and a mirror replaced, which they did a great job with. I especially appreciate the transparency/efficiency with their phone/email follow up and digital quotes. After my car was repaired, it was parked on the street for me to pick up that afternoon. In that brief time, the car was hit by a truck that drove away (a rare but standard risk for any shop that doesn't have a lot to park cars under their care). Phil's team was extremely professional about the situation, filed a hit&run report, and took care of the subsequent repairs without any fuss. I think a lot of shop owners would have tried to deflect the responsibility, but they were really calm and easy to work with in a stressful situation. My experience recently with Phil wasn't flawless, but it was extraordinary. What his shop lacks in perfection, it more than makes up for with integrity and care. I brought Phil my 10-year-old manual car after most shops in the city told me they couldn't work on it after the clutch gave out. I thought the worst-case scenario was a new clutch at about $700. As it turns out, my particular year/model was designed in such a way that the whole engine had to be taken out, so bump up the $700 to $1500. Phil's price was consistent with the dealership but Phil already had my car so I decided to go with him out of convenience. During the process, Phil discovered the flywheel was also damaged and tried to salvage it with only partial luck. I decided to go ahead and replace that, too. My total clocked in at $1900 which was a huge blow but Phil kept me informed throughout the process, was patient with my questions, and always picked up the phone. When I came in to pick up the car, he showed me the old parts and explained what he did. He was kind, friendly, and we had fun conversations. And, the new clutch was so great! Fast forward a week and I was driving around when suddenly my clutch went slack and wouldn't shift at all. I called Phil pretty frustrated and upset and he immediately called me a tow truck and stayed late on a holiday weekend to determine what went wrong. Turns out a small part had come loose or wasn't tightened properly and he fixed it quickly, vacuumed the car out, and left an apology note with $60 in the car for me to pick up the next day, calling me frequently along the way. I was really surprised - I've never had a mechanic show such care and integrity. My husband and I agreed: Even though we're moving out of the neighborhood, we're going to see Phil again! read more

Phil and his team are highly skilled, very reliable, and provide honest transparent rates. This is my first time having a car, so there is a lot I'm learning. Phil puts a lot of time into educating his customers. When I walked in, he invited me to his office--something no other shop has done-- and we spent time discussing my cars history and what needs to be done. He then showed me the fixes in person, teaching me the parts and how they work together. Then he broke down the cost. Phil's quote was on par with other shops, and in some cases less! The difference here is that you get dealership/factory trained technicians with mastery of Acura and Honda cars, with years of consistent training and service. To be sure about the cost, I called a lot of other shops in Philly and surrounding suburbs. I called a friends friend who owns a shop himself, who verified that Phil's prices are very fair. Took my car here once to have the tail lights fixed and had a pretty good experience. Phil seemed like a good guy. Then, a couple weeks later, my battery was having problems and my engine started smoking. I took the car into him on a Monday and got it back on Thursday. In those three days; he replaced a battery and that is it. He ran diagnostics and had a camera to look at where the oil leak was coming from that caused the smoking but was unable to fix it in time for me. Then he charged me $350! !350 for a new battery and that is all that got done. Huge rip off. read more

Phil responded to me Yelp quote within a day, and invited me to call to talk more. My wife needed a mode door actuator replaced on her 2000 Infiniti G20, and Phil's quote for the work was both fair and right on the dime. Several other shops turned me down on the repair because of how difficult the part was to find and replace, but Phil had no problem taking on the task and seeing it through to completion. Phil's shop itself is in a neighborhood that looks rough, but we had no problems. His shop is well secured, with protected windows, and a security system, so I wasn't that worried about leaving my car there. I knew Phil's would take care of it. Had a very good experience here for my Toyota Camry. I had general maintenance done, and Crystal was helpful in terms of getting my car in and out of the shop quickly. Did not interact too much with Phil and the rest of the crew, but they seemed pleasant. Was not pressured into doing any extra work, which is always a plus. I have real mixed feelings about this spot. The owner Phil, seems to be a good guy and the quality of the work seems to be good...BUT... If you're in rush, have plans, make an appointment, disregard all that! No matter how I approach it (I've tried a few times), whether I drop the car or wait for it, whether I have an appointment or not, it takes forever!! Latest "experience"... I drop off the car Wed night (after calling two weeks prior AND the Mon before) with the stated expectation of picking it up after work as I had meetings and plans that evening... I left a note with the keys requesting a Thurs AM phone call with the estimated cost before work begins... First, I never got the phone call with the estimated cost, but more on that later... When I arrive around 6:00pm Thurs evening for pick up, the car is still on the lift! I then hear all about the tough day HE is having, but nothing about when the car will be done... Long story short, I didn't leave with the car until 10:30pm!!! I noted to him three times, he could have called me and told me that the car would not be done until late, then I could have pursued my needed plans for the evening, three times I noted that... I noted that my plans were needed prior to my trip departure, that now my departure time will be pushed back by a few hours which cancels my pre-paid plans for Friday evening... I noted that all that could have been avoided with just a phone call... And about that requested estimate? The final costs came in about 30-40% higher than I expected, 30-40% higher than I was led to expect in prior conversations... So to summarize, - no estimate as requested, - a wasted evening and cancelled plans, - final costs 40% higher than expected, - travel plans delayed, - pre-paid plans wasted... As noted previously, Phil seems like a good guy and does what seems like quality work, just be prepared to spend MUCH, time AND money.,, ...by the way, did I mention that NOT ALL THE WORK WAS DONE?... ***********UPDATE @ Thurs July 6th********** Okay, I returned and was very well pleased and impressed! Dropped the car off the night of 7/5 for an AC recharge, got a text by lunchtime 7/6 that the work was done with final cost as quoted WITH an unexpected repair done, this is the type of experience that brought me back to Phil's in the first place...glad to have reason to return... read more

This place is one of the best auto service experiences I've ever had. The people here are extremely friendly, professional, and HONEST! They don't push services you don't need, but if they suspect that your car needs work, they will clearly explain exactly what needs to be done and why. They even brought me into the shop to show me why my car was making weird noises. There's not much space to wait at the shop, but they offer to drive you elsewhere to wait and come pick you up later. The wait was a bit longer than I expected (still within the time window they gave) and was totally worth it. Phil did a great job for my Toyota Camry. My starter was dead, and I had a cracked radiator. He completed the whole job within 24 hours of dropping off the car. He even showed us all the work he did, and the damaged parts when we picked it up. He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the work that needs to be done. It's great because you don't feel like you're being tricked or overcharged. When we picked it up, he gave us recommendations on things that need to be addressed in the near future, but didn't pressure us to spend more at that time. I really appreciated his honesty. I had a great experience here! I have never been to an auto shop that took the time to make sure you understand everything that is going on with your car. Phil pulled out a book of diagrams that explain each part and if I was unsure of anything, he was ready and willing to teach it to me. Luckily my little Jetta only needed an oil change and a bulb replacement to pass inspection- that much I understand!! Phil's is the best. I went there to get my driver's side mirror replaced after it had been knocked off. I was visiting Philly from DC and needed it fixed for my drive home. Phil found a used one right away, spray painted it to match my car, and checked my fluids before I hit the road. He didn't have to do the last two things, but he did. I needed to get my car inspected and was doubtful of finding any place in the city where I would find an honest mechanic who would do the job right, not charge me a fortune, and wouldn't invent problems that I'd have to pay an arm and a leg to fix. Phil is the BEST. I dropped my car off this morning and in the pouring rain he drove me to my office in center city. The car was inspected and all work done by noon. I wasn't charged for things I didn't need. After work I took the subway to Snyder St and an employee picked me up at the subway and drove me back to the shop to get my car. Now THAT is service. So I had been looking for a shop to take my car to for a few weeks and came across Phil's EXCELLANT Auto Service and saw the the numerous positive reviews this shop and its staff had but I decided to keep searching then a friend of mine told me to go Phil's and so I did. When I called I'm not sure who I spoke to but they were very pleasant and took my information and scheduled my appointment for the next day. When I dropped my car off i was greeted by the shops Administrative Assistant Crystal who also was super pleasant and took time to explain the process and answer any questions. By that afternoon they had completed the work on my car and called and sent a courtesy text to let me know I could come pick up. I came the next morning, which happened to be my birthday to discover that they had extended a special credit to my service fee as a Happy Birthday to me, That really made my day. THEN a few days later i received an email notifying me that a record of my repairs and services had been set up for me and that i could check my repairs and schedule future service, that's dope! Fast, Fair, Affordable, Professional, and an absolute delight to work with!
