The backs of buildings and not a lot else is your scenery on this long stretch of road. Then as you turn the last corner and round off to some business buildings you're struck with three cafes all huddled together as though hiding from greater Bristol. If it's a lively and exciting lunch break you want you can do no better than choosing Redcliffe's Sandwich Bar of the three. They've been here for eight years and it has to be one of Bristol's best kept secrets. They have a good range of sandwich fillings with all the usual baguettes, paninis and loaves from local bakers, and some very fine fresh coffee to boot. It is the vibe that really gets this place going. The staff mix up their days choosing crazy themes to pull in the people. I've been there on Elvis day, 80s day and a Grease themed day. All pretty similar but who cares? They dance, sing and laugh constantly, turning any standard lunch break into a happy music-filled one. The owner is a delightful woman with enough stories for ages and some really pretty amazing tattoo work. Check it out today.

Its a very pleasant - sun streams in at lunchtime through the large window, its very cosy and welcoming and the staff are friendly. A bit of a hidden gem this place.

Yep, it can be a bit pricey but they stuff the sandwiches so full I actually can buy one sandwich and it lasts me two days, making it much much cheaper than any packaged sandwich. Everything is very fresh and clean, lots of nice crisps and cakes to add onto your order as well and your everyday lunch has suddenly got very interesting. Yum. TOP TIP: If you are ordering lots or just hate queuing, you can order online for any of their shops as long as you do it before 11.30am and you just pick it up at the till at the time you want.

Bristol has some great bread fillers, but they are all quite samey; coronation chicken, ham salad, chicken mayo, BLT. You know the drill! But the Gourmet Sandwich Club is much different. It is interesting, unique and feels special - it's very Bristol. The concept is simple; it's invite only (via facebook), happens only on Fridays and they create incredible sandwiches. And I mean incredible! Every week they have 3 or 4 options to choose from. You pay by pay-pal and then pick them up from The Canteen on Stokes Croft, with a one hour window between 1-2. Now that's some serious underground Sandwich dealing! I was lucky enough to be invited to their debut last week, and I was really excited about it. In fact, I had to slow myself down as I pretty much ran down Gloucester Road. I got to The Canteen and waited for a minute for mine to brought out to me. A girl came to meet me and handed me a brown cardboard box with my name artfully written on it, a glass bottle of some red juice and a little cup cake. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to eat it in the Canteen, but I wasn't walking anywhere. I wanted it immediately! So I sat down, opened it up and tucked in. I chose the 'Steak on a bed of feta and beetroot with wild rocket and a homemade honey and mustard dressing, all compacted in to a toasted Sesame seed baguette' and oh my goodness, it was amazing! The steak was perfectly cooked and the feta and beetroot worked so well with the meat. I don't exactly know what the red juice was, but I'm guessing it was a homemade raspberry and mint juice - because it had raspberries and mint leaves in it - *Sherlock! It was really refreshing and I really wanted more. I would definitely have bought another bottle if I could. Fridays have always been my favourite day of the week; The Gourmet Sandwich Club just made them a whole lot better!

I opted for the bombay lamb steak with a mint yogurt and honey slaw in a toasted roll. It came with a Cherry and Pomegranate juice, and chocolate cookie with fresh raspberries. I cannot over emphasise the freshness of the ingredients enough, and everything is homemade. The juice was light and refreshing, and you almost felt the goodness going into your body. The sandwich deliciously tasty and super yummy, and the cookie, well the perfect dessert - with the raspberries adding that little extra something. Highly recommended for £7.50 and a fantastic gourmet lunch.

They are also one of the cheapest meal options in St Nicks Market at around £2.80 for an amazing sausage baguette with leeks, onions, mustard and red (eugh) or brown (yay!) sauce. You can also mix and match your sausages, so if like me you can't choose between the lamb or pork (with cider and mustard) you can just get both. I think the pork wins it, but only by a nose (or a snout, weyhey, I thank you!). The man who owns the sausage shop is so lovely and welcoming. I have eaten a lot of his sausages (...er) and this has never changed; he's never had an off day being a nice guy. The sausage sandwiches/baguettes are quite hard to manoeuvre into your mouth, because the sausages are so big and juicy, so there is the option to have sausage and mash. This is a great option for lunch as it's so filling you are sorted until tea time.

We headed to the back of the building which almost feels conservatory like. The whole menu looked mouthwatering, I opted for the Home Smoked Trout with cream cheese, scrambled egg and radish salad. All of the flavours really complemented each other, and the scrammed egg was the lightest and fluffiest I've ever tasted. It was an ample portion, and really set me up for the rest of the day. The other thing I should mention is price, you get high quality for a great price. My brunch was priced at £6.90. The perfect price for a lunch deal in my opinion. With its dark woody interior, pretty tables and chairs, mirrors, pictures and classic tea trays, it would be very at home on an old postcard. It can get quite packed during the lunch rush hour, of course, but there's plenty of room and lots of seating throughout and some outside on the pavement. Hot jacket potatoes with lots of different fillings, great sandwiches, cakes, fruit; it's all spread out for you to choose from - you fill your tray and then take it up to the counter and pay, so it's actually quite a quick and efficient process. You don't really have to do any ordering at all, and there's none of that frustrating nonsense you get in chain coffee shops where you have to repeart your order to a different person taking the money. I'd say it's not the best place for a quiet, peaceful coffee break on your own or for a catch-up with a friend, because it's quite busy and loud. It's more the sort of place you'd come to have a quick bite and a sit down during a shopping day in Broadmead. There are quite a lot of young kids and babies in here as it's very family-friendly and there's space for buggies. Taste Of Napoli

    Taste Of Napoli

Taste of Napoli Review…read more The taste of Napoli is an Italian deli and cafe tucked away in one of the back streets of Bristol city centre. Situated opposite Debenhams it hasn't been open long. I was in town for a meeting so I thought I'd pop in for a quick bite to eat. First impressions where good. This small deli can only host about a dozen or so people at the front of its restaurant. There is additional seating upstairs to which I took advantage of. However there is no lift or escalator so this isn't a good sign for anyone with walking difficulties or is in a wheelchair. Having said that after about five minutes of me taking my seat upstairs someone hobbled in on crutches so it can be done? The menu is quite extensive, boasting a whole host of classic Italian combinations. Sausage and peppers, pizza slices, fresh cannolis arancini balls, panini's and calzones. The food options are split over several laminated menu cards which is a bit excessive. I feel that all items could be placed on one menu in a traditional book format but that's is just me being picky. You have to place your order and pay at the counter, there is no table service as such. I plumped for their Italian sausage panini aptly called 'The Napoli'. It consisted of Italian sausage, roasted herb potatoes and mozzarella cheese. Baked in a fresh roll this was quite a big sandwich. The sausages where lovely. Perfectly seasoned and not too overpowering. The cheese again was a treat and worked well. The potatoes on the other hand where disappointing. Slightly underdone and completely tasteless. Definitely not roasted. I mean they may have been shown the inside of an oven but that's about it. As part of the combination it didn't really work which was a great shame. I ended up taking most of the potatoes out and leaving them. I had a coffee latte with my sandwich, not being a great coffee lover I can't really pass judgement on it because all coffee tastes the same to me. There was a bit of a wait for my order but it was cooked fresh so it's worth the wait. All in all it was a pleasant lunch choice. At £7.00 including the coffee I didn't think it was too horrendous. I'd definitely go back but I wouldn't have the same choice because of the potatoes. It's well worth going here rather than Burger King next door.
