The Brunel Buttery has two great views - on one side is the pretty river, and on the other are old trains on the old railway path. Although this is just a tiny buttery, it gets very popular most lunchtimes, be it the weekday or the weekend. They serve teas, coffees, home baked cakes, and hot sandwiches filled with egg, bacon, sausage, any combination of the above three, or simply all of them at one go. To look at this cafe is just a hatch in a wall. Don't let its appearance pass up a visit here though. Brunel's Buttery (named after the famous engineer that built Clifton Suspension Bridge, perhaps Bristol's biggest claim to fame after Banksy) is a fantastic greasy spoon and a harbourside institution. After the queue, which snakes through the surrounding benches (the only seating available), you'll have the opportunity to get various fried delights. It's all about the chip and bacon butties here. Get one of these and a cup of tea, then take a seat and watch the world go by. If you're lucky the steam train that sometimes goes up and down the docks will come by. You're likely to be annoyed by seagulls. Don't feed these as they'll just keep on coming back for more. Being outside you're at the mercy of the elements, which can be inconvenient. You shouldn't let either of these annoyances stop you visiting Brunel's Buttery though, this place is marvellous. read more

Wow, I couldn't imagine this place during summer because If I was living in Bristol I could probably be there everyday. Amazing food, amazing coffee, amazing hand made sandwiches...shall I keep going?YES! I had a macron with jam and a cup of coffee and my friend had a sandwich with mushroom and cheese and coffee...what a perfect match! Cheap place and full of people of a cold day, Bristol people know that this place is awesome. This place is like a take away but you can sit down as there are tables and chairs, toilets and also seagulls that are only awaiting for you to give them a piece of your sandwich...this won't never happen! This place is brilliant! Many a Saturday morning i've spent over the years after a night out crawling to the buttery for a bacon sarnie and a coffee, sitting by the water with a gentle breeze- cannot get much better! It's a super cute small building that's always buzzing, no room at the tables? Don't worry! Perch by the side of the water and appreciate the great views and chat to the friendly boat owners. I happened across this place on Sunday morning with a hangover while on the hunt for a cure. It's a little tricky to find - you basically need to go to the SS Great Britain, turn right and keep walking for about two minutes. I'm sure the food is very good but unfortunately it's just too popular. It may have been because the sun was out, but the queue was ridiculously long. We joined but after about 10 minutes we realised we were getting nowhere and gave up. For the record, the egg and bacon-style baguettes are around £3 and are very popular, you'll just have a job getting one within half an hour or a space at a bench to enjoy it. A shame because, combined with a stroll around the harbour, this is certainly a different way to grab your brekkie. read more

A definite must if your going for a stroll down by the waterfront during the weekend, but do plan to arrive early at this establishment do not be fooled by the small appearance of the brunel buttery the food is legendary and so are the lines of people waiting to be served. This is an absolutely lovely outdoor cafe overlooking a tranquil area of the docks, with no passing rush of people or traffic. It's not posh, but if what you really fancy is a no-frills cuppa and a bacon buttie, I can't think of a nicer place to go. It's an interesting and friendly place to visit, as unusually people from all walks of life and ages mingle there; people share tables with strangers without complaint, and it's not uncommon to see someone who's fairly down and out sat next to a multi-millionaire, passing the time of day over a brew. The Buttery serves a range of light meals and snacks, including sandwiches and cakes. They also make their own pies with a variety of different delicious fillings. You can either sit down to eat or get a takeout. It's not gourmet but by fast food takeaway standards the food is pretty decent, and I felt the price is very reasonable for what you get. I just like chilling out there looking out over the water. Of course, it being near the water, you do need to keep an eye on your plate - the local seagulls have also discovered the food there is good and will nick your dinner given a moment of opportunity! To get there via car, head south of the river from the city centre; its opposite Lloyds. Go over Prince Street Bridge, and take the first right turn after some cranes, behind the site for the new industrial museum. The lane you go down to reach the Buttery is very narrow; don't be disconcerted by the fact you have to drive down a railway track and over a variety of road humps on the way down. There is plenty of free parking when you reach the Buttery; however be aware this cafe only has outdoor seating so in inclement weather it would only suit the most hardy! read more

4* from me (one missing as they never do my bacon quite crispy enough) Since I was at school I have been going to this treasured place and only recently have I realised what an institution it is in Bristol! Hidden away between the river and the railway line I still don't quite understand how it is always so busy! You do have to make sure you get there before the tummy rumbles start as there is nearly always a queue! Serving up bacon sandwiches (and sausage/eggs/chips/cakes/tea/hot choc...the list goes on) from its tiny kitchen, the staff are always jolly and the bread is always the thickest and softest around! Brunel's Buttery is the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by, nursing a hangover or just taking a well deserved break from a walk along the river! If you live in Bristol you'll be amazed that you didn't know it was there (and once you have been you know you'll be back!) and if you're just visiting you have to go before you leave! It's places like this that make me scream from the top of my lungs "I love Bristol". This is a great little greasy spoon on the SS Great Britain side of the harbour which is perfect for soaking up alcohol the morning after the night before. And a little known secret is that you can ask for a bacon with sausage sandwich and it means something totally different to a sausage with bacon sandwich. Well not that different but there's more of the former and less of the latter if you catch my drift. Service is brusque and it can be tough getting a seat but with such huge dispensers of Hp Sauce and Ketchup, I can find no real cause to complain. You can always eat your tasty sanger on the go, if you don't mind smearing sauce all over your front that is! It is on the chilly side what with it being a small hatch with outdoor seating, but a scalding cup of coffee will soon warm you up. read more

I walked passed this place everyday on my way to work for about a year and stopped there for a bacon or sausage sandwich a number of times for breakfast. It's a funny little place, that is nothing more than a brick shack with an opening for placing and receiving your order. It's about 2 or 3 hundred yards down from the SS Great Britain and unless you know it's there you might never find it, but it's often very, very busy, so I'm guessing there are a lot of people going out of their way to eat there, and why not. The food is very, very good and they make a mean sausage and egg roll. The smell of fried bacon wafting down the water front is hard to resist when it hits you and I myself have eaten a second breakfast there on more than one occasion. There are a few wooden benches just in front of the buttery itself which between 8 and 9 are filled with people on their way to walk so it's standing room only half the time. But if you don't mind standing or want something on the move this place is great. read more

The reputation of this place found me more than a decade before I got to try it out for myself. Sure enough, it's a lovely little spot with friendly staff and a strange feel of community as the regulars and locals pop in and out for their essential bacon and egg butty. Brunels Buttery is one of Bristols best known institutions. Placed by the dockside, its the perfect place to have a bite to eat with a loved one or to sit on the picnic tables available to enjoy your own company. The bread is fresh, the meat is locally sourced and I found that part of beauty of this place is the number of people seen to be queing outside of what resembles a brick tool shed. My only criticism of this place is that that fair enough, there's trees providing a little bit of shelter. But umbrellas wouldn't go amiss! A step back in time with very reasonable prices it is a family treat not to be missed. I had a delicious bacon sandwich today - very meaty - and a cone of chips, the trick is to wedge the code in between the slats of the table to leave your hands free for the sandwich! I followed up with a rock cake - highly recommended - all washed down with tea in a proper mug, not a plastic cup. Excellent value. read more

If you want to experience the real Bristol, head for Brunels Buttery. Sitting outside in glorious March sunshine today, we felt privileged to be Bristolian. You can savour the best bacon (or sausage/egg/mushroom) butties around, whilst watching a thriving harbourside - there is always something going on. The coffee may be instant but the hot frothy milk (or maybe the fresh air) somehow makes it taste just as good as one of the high street coffee shops. We love the eclectic mix of people that gather on the bench seating. It is always busy so be prepared to queue or arrive early and wrap up warmly if there is no sun. The kitchen is tiny so it never ceases to amaze us how quickly they manage to produce our food. Free parking for 45 mins is available 100 yards past the Buttery, just enough time to enjoy the al fresco atmosphere. Enjoy! read more
