The Gourmet Sandwich Club

The Gourmet Sandwich Club

The Gourmet Sandwich Club is the most exciting thing to happen to Bristol lunch times since, well,…read moreever! Bristol has some great bread fillers, but they are all quite samey; coronation chicken, ham salad, chicken mayo, BLT. You know the drill! But the Gourmet Sandwich Club is much different. It is interesting, unique and feels special - it's very Bristol. The concept is simple; it's invite only (via facebook), happens only on Fridays and they create incredible sandwiches. And I mean incredible! Every week they have 3 or 4 options to choose from. You pay by pay-pal and then pick them up from The Canteen on Stokes Croft, with a one hour window between 1-2. Now that's some serious underground Sandwich dealing! I was lucky enough to be invited to their debut last week, and I was really excited about it. In fact, I had to slow myself down as I pretty much ran down Gloucester Road. I got to The Canteen and waited for a minute for mine to brought out to me. A girl came to meet me and handed me a brown cardboard box with my name artfully written on it, a glass bottle of some red juice and a little cup cake. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to eat it in the Canteen, but I wasn't walking anywhere. I wanted it immediately! So I sat down, opened it up and tucked in. I chose the 'Steak on a bed of feta and beetroot with wild rocket and a homemade honey and mustard dressing, all compacted in to a toasted Sesame seed baguette' and oh my goodness, it was amazing! The steak was perfectly cooked and the feta and beetroot worked so well with the meat. I don't exactly know what the red juice was, but I'm guessing it was a homemade raspberry and mint juice - because it had raspberries and mint leaves in it - *Sherlock! It was really refreshing and I really wanted more. I would definitely have bought another bottle if I could. Fridays have always been my favourite day of the week; The Gourmet Sandwich Club just made them a whole lot better!

What a great idea. You sign up via Facebook, and place your order in advance for Friday lunchtime,…read moreand then pop down to the front of the canteen to collect your homemade delights at a set time on the Friday. I opted for the bombay lamb steak with a mint yogurt and honey slaw in a toasted roll. It came with a Cherry and Pomegranate juice, and chocolate cookie with fresh raspberries. I cannot over emphasise the freshness of the ingredients enough, and everything is homemade. The juice was light and refreshing, and you almost felt the goodness going into your body. The sandwich deliciously tasty and super yummy, and the cookie, well the perfect dessert - with the raspberries adding that little extra something. Highly recommended for £7.50 and a fantastic gourmet lunch.

The backs of buildings and not a lot else is your scenery on this long stretch of road. Then as you turn the last corner and round off to some business buildings you're struck with three cafes all huddled together as though hiding from greater Bristol. If it's a lively and exciting lunch break you want you can do no better than choosing Redcliffe's Sandwich Bar of the three. They've been here for eight years and it has to be one of Bristol's best kept secrets. They have a good range of sandwich fillings with all the usual baguettes, paninis and loaves from local bakers, and some very fine fresh coffee to boot. It is the vibe that really gets this place going. The staff mix up their days choosing crazy themes to pull in the people. I've been there on Elvis day, 80s day and a Grease themed day. All pretty similar but who cares? They dance, sing and laugh constantly, turning any standard lunch break into a happy music-filled one. The owner is a delightful woman with enough stories for ages and some really pretty amazing tattoo work. Check it out today.

They do nice coffees, soft drinks and crisps - I bought some monster munch from here, hurrah! Nice change from all the super gourmet crisps normally on sale in sandwich shops. Its definitely worth taking the time out to sit here and enjoy your lunch though. Its a very pleasant - sun streams in at lunchtime through the large window, its very cosy and welcoming and the staff are friendly. A bit of a hidden gem this place.

Their cheese range is fantastic, a must for any cheese and wine party you are having and talking of wine - check out their organic range just behind you. My favourite bit is the self-service grains section where you bring your own tub and woosh out rice and seeds to your own order. In the back room you can do a similar thing and refill your Ecover bottles from a big vat - including washing up and clothes washing liquids. As with all collections of quality food and eco items, it is a little more expensive but such a friendly and nice store you won't begrudge it.

Also, for a cheese fan like myself, the Deli offers a brilliant selection, so if I ever have that little bit of extra cash in my pocket i'll spash out on some extra mature chedder ... i'm drooling a bit just thinking about it... The service is brilliant here, the staff all embody the ethos of the shop, and you feel like they will offer you a hand with any queries you can have. There's also a nice seating area outside (covered) which is great to sit a people watch for a while as you sip the fine coffee you've bought inside... that or a great local ale from the selection they have!

They are also one of the cheapest meal options in St Nicks Market at around £2.80 for an amazing sausage baguette with leeks, onions, mustard and red (eugh) or brown (yay!) sauce. You can also mix and match your sausages, so if like me you can't choose between the lamb or pork (with cider and mustard) you can just get both. I think the pork wins it, but only by a nose (or a snout, weyhey, I thank you!). The man who owns the sausage shop is so lovely and welcoming. I have eaten a lot of his sausages (...er) and this has never changed; he's never had an off day being a nice guy. The sausage sandwiches/baguettes are quite hard to manoeuvre into your mouth, because the sausages are so big and juicy, so there is the option to have sausage and mash. This is a great option for lunch as it's so filling you are sorted until tea time.

If you want to get stuffed by sausages (OK I'll stop now), then they also have an on-site bbq for a sausage and mash for lunch - for big appetites only!
