12/29/2019 PR105 Review: If you want your holiday spirits dampened by cold unfriendly, inexplicable attitude then this is the flight of your dreams. Our flight stewardess never smiled during the 15 hour journey. During the meal service, she asked me what I wanted to drink. I requested for ginger ale. Her cart was out of ginger ale. She acted like I asked her to fetch for a gallon of liquid gold from the fountain of youth. I would've changed my preference if she gave me another choice. I could not believe what I just saw. I wish there were more choices when it comes to direct flights to the Philippines. Flight PR5104 01/15/2020 however was a different story. This was a make-up flight from a cancelled one from the night before. Passengers were understandably tired and weary but the crew were very helpful and made you feel that Filipino hospitality that you know.

PAL: Plane Always Late Imagine this.... Saturday evening at Philippine Airlines. You're dropping off your loved ones at SFO (San Francisco International Airport). They're flying Philippine Airlines (the midnight flight and only flight that leaves SFO). So you drag your balikbayan* boxes for miles from the parking terminal or drop off point to the check in. Herds upon herds of confused and sometimes angry Filipinos are waiting in line. Each one of them has a story to tell or a dramatic event that brought them here. But somehow you manage to entertain yourself and your loved ones like this... "Go to the nearest white courtesy phone and ask the airport operator to page, "Gary Valencio". Tell the operator that Gary has to meet his party in the baggage claim." After the operator makes the announcement, you'll have the ease and simplicity of getting your baggage and boxes checked in on time. Provided that the check in staff doesn't abandon this stations. You can thank me later. =) Balikbayan = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balikbayan_box

I'm an American, born and raised and since I met my wife in the Philippines I have made the trip around 12 times over the last 20 years, with different carriers. The trip over to Manila was the coldest flight ever, even with my sweater and jacket on. The flight back was very warm and stuffy and uncomfortable to the point that motion sickness was a real threat on our 14 hour flight. The 777-ER we were on didn't have directional air vents that I was accustomed to, so it was hot and stuffy and smelly and nothing you could do about it. If you've been to the Philippines you know the people are friendly and warm, however if you know the Philippines you know they are NOT known for customer service. If you buy a new car there, even if it's a new $100k Land Cruiser (like my Uncle just bought) you don't get a warranty included, if you want to order a McDonald's McChicken Sandwich (as I did the other day) with just cheese and pickles they may allow the cheese w/ manager approval but deny you on the pickle request, as happened to me, yes seriously. If you buy something from a store and decided for whatever reason to return it, that isn't done there. I traveled to Manila with my wife and two young sons a few weeks ago. My youngest son is 6 and has cerebral palsy, needs a wheelchair to go anywhere. We contacted the airline long before our flight and let them know that we were traveling with a family member who had his own wheelchair and that it needed to be left at the gate of departure and in the gate for our arrival, in Manila. When we arrived in Manila we learned that the wheelchair was sent to the baggage carousel, on the other side of the airport, past customs and immigration lines! Immediately we are all stressed, having to carry all of our belongings and deal with him and the hour long lines and the heat was exhausting. I was further stressed because this was a brand new wheelchair, costing $13,000, left unprotected, for anyone to take in the meantime. We finally made it through the lines and the wheelchair was clearly damaged, with scratches everywhere. They must have transported it on its side and the handle was falling apart. On the return we told everyone at PAL that this was an expensive, new wheelchair and that we needed it to be at the gate or I was going to make a complaint with the FAA. They still weren't sure they could make that happen. They all believed that a wheelchair should be sent to the baggage carousel?! No matter of discussion with PAL could make them understand how ludicrous and cruel it was to separate a handicapped person from his wheelchair. On our arrival in SFO we were the last off the plane, because we had a car seat and plenty of belongings. We got to the gate and guess what? No wheelchair. My wife and I insisted this time around that they bring it to us, which they did about 35 minutes later, this time with plenty more scratches and even dents! I filed a complaint with the FAA, hopefully they will cure their customer service oversight, in this regard anyway. I scolded the gate staff about having respect for these items, these weren't tough suitcases that will be tucked away in a closet after the trip, this carried my son everywhere he went at basically all times. Another parent traveling with their 20 something year old disabled son heard my lecture and said that they too had been frustrated with the treatment to their son's wheelchair by PAL. In summation, If you travel with a wheelchair or even have kids with a stroller, skip this airline. If you want great international airline customer service, go with Delta or EVA or another carrier that knows what customer service is, Philippine Airlines is clearly numb to basic customer needs. This airline earns a "C-" when compared with other international airlines that fly to Manila. Strangely enough, within the country of the Philippines, flying domestically this was a great airline, (at least after I Direct messaged them on Twitter) they just seem lousy for long international flights.

Would you pay up to four times the economy fare to fly business class trans Atlantic? Wife and I…read moredid it four times in the past 14 months. June 2025 wife and I flew from San Francisco to Amsterdam, and then Frankfurt, Germany to San Francisco. Late April 2026 flew from San Francisco to London, and then Paris to San Francisco. All four flights by United Airlines business class, and on time departures and arrivals. We flew business class as Viking river cruises able to get us a 50% discount on business class fares in lieu of free economy fares, reserving 9 months in advance. At San Francisco, Frankfurt, and Paris Charles De Gaulle airports, we can eat hot food in the United or Celebi Platinum or Star Alliance lounges respectively by scanning our business class ticket. Traveling by business class meant expedited baggage check in in San Francisco and Paris. Also expedited security checks and passport control in Paris Charles De Gaulle, which is a very big thing if you've seen the lengthy passport control lines in Europe. United Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner can seat 257 passengers with 3 restrooms for the 48 lay flat business class cubicles. The 21 premium plus seats, 39 economy plus seats, and 149 economy seats share three restrooms in the middle of the plane, toward the front of the economy section, and behind the economy plus section. seat map at https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/company/aircraft/boeing-787-9-dreamliner.html The seating configuration is 3-3-3 in Economy and Economy Plus, 2-3-2 in premium plus, and 1-2-1 in business class. Each business class lay flat bed seat takes up the same amount of room as 4 economy seats, and every business class seat is by the aisle. The lay flat seats are 72" in length, compared to 31" pitch in economy and 38" pitch in premium economy. seat selection guide at https://seatcompare.ai/insights/united-airlines-787-seat-selection-guide My Viking river cruise advisor asked if we wanted the two middle seats adjacent to each other, each with aisle access. I declined as my wife needs assistance getting her 25 pound carry on luggage into the overhead bin, and we would be seated on different aisles. I asked for contiguous window row seats for us. A and L are window seats, but business class row seating in United Boeing 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 Dreamliners are staggered, with odd number rows adjacent to windows, and even number rows seated about 9 inches from the window in business class. So seat 2A is really like seat 2B with 2A being a 9" wide arm rest. The feet of passenger 3A in lay flat seat mode are underneath that covered arm rest. I got myself an odd number row, and my wife sat in the row behind me, 9 inches from the window. 10 hour 40 minute flight to Amsterdam departing at 5pm and landing at 1pm the next day, flying over the polar route at night and during the daytime mainly over ocean. 9 hour time difference Full meal with appetizer, main course, and dessert and unlimited beverages. After 24 years of marriage, my wife is getting picky in her old age, and absolutely hated the chicken and the fish. I got the beef and she got the vegetarian option. Business class passengers get a blue leather vanity kit including eye mask, ear plugs, disposable socks, bamboo toothbrush, toothpaste, mouth wash, and complete skin care kit, the latter I immediately gave to my wife. Great entertainment with airline provided excellent headsets and displays built into the back of the seats, and adjustable angled. I took off my shoes, and the stewardess immediately got me some disposable slippers, not taking a chance that my socks would stink up the cabin. Best thing of course is the lay flat seats, and being able to get 4 hours sleep between dinner and breakfast, and waking up the next day refreshed. It helps that no crying babies nor loud snorers. Viking river cruises in Europe reserves its trans Atlantic flights through United. We are scheduled to fly United business class in April 2027 when we take our 4th Viking river cruise in 4 consecutive years. Wife says that next time we fly business on United, she gets the odd number row window seat, and me the even number row behind.

The plane arrived on time, and since it was an overnight flight, they gave a complimentary blanket and neck pillow, both of which were incredibly comfy. United also provided numerous food and drink services. First they brought out snacks, which were high quality cheese and crackers. After, they brought out meals, where you go to choose from chicken, beef or pasta. I chose chicken, which was a chicken polenta. I don't like polenta to begin with, so I didn't like the meal, but the people next to me had the other options, which looked very good. After a few hours, they gave everyone sandwiches, which were my favorite. Definitely high quality airplane food. To finish off the flight, they did breakfast, which tasted pretty good. Drinks were served with every meal. The best part was the in flight entertainment. The screens in front of me were equipped with dozens of free movies, free services for TV like Apple TV and Hulu, and even an interactive flight tracker. The flight attendants were really nice as well. Would definitely fly United again!

Overall, I think this is a good location for a work event…read more I'm not sure who would actually stay here if not for a work event. It is close to Burlingame, which is a really cute city. However, it's not really walkable to much and it is a bit of a drive especially in rush-hour to San Francisco. So I couldn't quite figure out who would stay here if you don't have a work conference here. However, for a work conference, it is quite good. First, the one negative to this place is the shuttle can take ridiculously long. For two years straight I've stood at the airport watching all the other hotel shuttles go by and wondering if this one actually exists. There is a link on their website for you to track the shuttle, but it is pretty hard to navigate. The only thing it really did was make me believe that the shuttle exists. Supposedly it comes every 15 minutes, but the last two times I've been here it's taken at least 30 minutes. That being said, once it does arrive, it is quite large so there's no fear that I wouldn't get a spot and would have to wait another 30 minutes for the next shuttle. However, take this into consideration if you have to be somewhere in a certain time. Check in was a breeze. They are replacing all of their room key pads for extra security. The downside of this was my card didn't work for the fitness room or the pool area. If you're coming in the next couple of months, this probably won't be an issue anymore. I actually really enjoy the breakfast buffet at the restaurant. It is a little on the pricier side at $30, but for my Conference it was included and I loved eating breakfast every day. It's a great assortment of hot food, cold food, made to order food. And the restaurant is large, so there was never any issues with getting a seat even though we were taking up majority of the room. This time our lunch was outside under a tent by the pool. There was about 100 people in our conference and they did a great job accommodating us there. All their conference rooms are quite nice, so I think if you're hosting a large group, this is a good place to do it. Rooms are standard, nothing much to write about there. They felt clean enough and I didn't have any issues. If you have a work conference here, I think you will enjoy it.

The front desk was really good and helpful, as we observed them dealing with other guests...some foreign guests. Yep...I felt right at home as a business guy. Sitting in the dining room, there were mostly single men and women at the various tables. Many with laptops open and still in business dress, they were still "working" as no one had a book that they were reading. That was me just a few years ago. The hotel is located a shuttle trip from SFO airport, so very convenient and much cheaper and more quiet than being downtown. As a Hyatt member, we were given a World of Hyatt discount card which we did use. Thanks. The restaurant was one of the many "shops" in the huge open area, surrounded by the very high, many levels of rooms. The rooms look down on this "pit". Excellent menu and the prices were not as outrageous as they could be. Nice wine selection and we both had $13 glasses of a Sonoma Zinfandel. Service was great and not being hungry, we just split a good $33 pizza. A bit steep, but we customized the composition to our tastes. The World of Hyatt card gave us a welcome 15% discount. You can turn in your rental car, call for the shuttle and later take the shuttle to catch your flight out.

This was information that when they finally announced the flight cancellation over the PA could have also provided. Information regarding refunds was not vocalized either. I just wasn't very impressed with the customer service. I would not recommend flying Frontier. Jet Blue for life!

My first experience flying Frontier -- and unfortunately, probably my last…read more I typically fly United, but I needed to make an unexpected trip from Houston, Texas to Cleveland, Ohio to see an ill family member. Frontier was less expensive for the immediate trip, so I decided to give them a chance. Overall, most of my flights were actually good. The majority of the trip went smoothly, and I had no major complaints about the flights themselves. Unfortunately, the problems I experienced with Frontier's customer service and my final connecting flight home really changed my overall impression. Before booking, a friend of mine who works for Frontier gave me a promotional code for the Frontier credit card. I was told the code would provide miles and Gold status without requiring purchases, as part of the card approval process. However, when I completed the online credit card application, there was nowhere to enter the promotional code. I contacted both Frontier and Barclays for help, and unfortunately, I was repeatedly sent back and forth between the two companies, with each telling me that the other company needed to handle it. I still never received a satisfactory resolution. Then, when booking my ticket, I was supposed to receive the $100 credit/discount associated with the new Frontier card. However, I couldn't use the new card because there was no virtual card available to use immediately. When I contacted Frontier about that, the response was essentially, "You can use it next time." At that point, I wasn't even sure there would be a next time. Unfortunately, my final connecting flight home on Sunday was the experience that really sealed it for me. I had an assigned middle seat, which was actually one of the two seats I am comfortable flying in. I intentionally choose window or middle seats because I do not like sitting in the aisle. There is too much passing by, people bumping into you, reaching across you, etc. A couple was assigned the window and aisle seats in my row and wanted to sit together. When they arrived, I stood up to let them into their seats. The woman then asked if I would switch seats with her so they could sit together. I told her I was willing to switch as long as I wasn't being moved to the aisle seat. She was already being quite aggressive about the situation and ultimately pushed her way into the middle seat I had been assigned, while my backpack was still underneath the seat in front of it. My position was simple: I was not refusing to cooperate. I was willing to let them sit together. But if someone is asking me to give up the seat I specifically selected and was assigned--one of the two types of seats I am comfortable sitting in--I don't think it's unreasonable to say that I don't want to be forced into an aisle seat that I would never select for myself. What was most frustrating was when a flight attendant eventually came over to address the situation. Instead of helping find a reasonable solution, the couple was essentially allowed to take the seats they wanted, and I was the one who was forced out of my originally assigned seat. If sitting together was that important to them, they should have selected and paid for seats together when booking. I don't think another passenger should have to give up their assigned seat and be forced into a seat they specifically don't want simply because another couple wants to sit together. I understand that airlines have policies and that passengers sometimes need to accommodate one another. I'm always willing to be reasonable and courteous. But being courteous should work both ways. Unfortunately, the combination of the credit-card promotion/customer-service runaround and the way the seating situation was handled left a really bad final impression. I gave Frontier a chance because the price was better for a trip I needed to make quickly. Most of the actual flights were fine, but the overall experience reminded me that there is more to an airline than the ticket price. I honestly feel like I should have just paid the extra money and flown United like I normally do. This was my first time flying Frontier, and unfortunately, my experience has left me questioning whether I would choose them again. Sometimes the saying "you get what you pay for" really does hit home.

I have a bruise on my knee. She could have shaken me awake. In any case, her decision did not work well for me. Suggestion: clear policy on waking up customers.
