Phil saved the day for my son. He went to a local haircutting spot near where we live and the lady did not follow the assignment. She over cut and then curled his hair with a curling iron. I'm not sure if the reference photos were not good enough but if you couldn't do the job just say so. Contacted Phil to see if he could help and he squeezed him into his schedule the next day. C'mon! What can you say about the AMAZING Phil that hasn't already been said? I'm going through my 3rd bout of chemo (4 strokes and cancer 3 times) which effects your skin and scalp in different ways. Everyone doesn't lose "all" of their hair yet, it does change the texture, length, etc. Honey, there are too many dope wigs and custom hair units for me to cry about that. Yet, I do care about the hair I do have on my head and when I explained it to Phil, so did he! He thought it was really great how well I took care of my hair despite all that was going on in my life and encouraged me that I was beautiful with or without my lovely thick locks. Phil and I have NEVER crossed paths in the City before but when I walked into the shop the funeral for his cousin, whom I loved, was playing live on the televisions and I was literally trying to hold the tears back. Then come to find out Phil & the love that flows from his shop is connected to all the homies I know and Love in the community! OMG I've found my people! I love to fish and crab and so some of the others. Everybody (including the customers) are just warm and kind and real fam! Let me be clear, when I walked into the house and my husband said, "Wow, whomever your new barber is they are fire! They understood how to naturally line you up sharp and made your low cut gorgeous." I KNEW I had FINALLY found my dude for life! I normally let my hair grow back after chemo-immunotherapy but, this time, I think me and Phil might just rock the #2 and cute line up for the next year or so. Wow!!! $40 bucks to cut my hair with a #3 & a #1 Razor!!! I usually get charged between $15-$25. Normally I wouldnt give a negative review for just that, I just wouldnt go back...as soon as I walked in, the 1st guy gives me a dirty look, & asks me if I have an appointment, I said no, do I need one? He didnt answer, & he says ill take care of you, like hes doing me some huge favor.. then I tell him what I want & he repeats it really loud to his fellow barbers and laughs....I dont get the joke...I get the vibe they are trying to create, young guys, fun place etc...but thats not what I felt. The vibe I got was, "We are masters of the universe when it comes to barbering. We will try to intimidate you into believing that we only work by appointments, because we are so badass." I get the phsycology there, by insisting on appointments they are trying to justify their $40 haircuts! Come on guys!!! Really?? You cut hair!!! I dont like to talk S$&#*% about other peoples trade, but... YOU CUT HAIR!!! Doctors and even Mechanics insist on appointments. I can even see Hairstylists for women. But you cut hair!!!!! Mens hair!! You are a Barber!!! People "walk in" for hair cuts at a "Barber"!!! Thats how its always been, & thats how it will always be for "Barbers"! Pros- First off I'd like to say the main barber Phil gives good haircuts, the barber shop itself looks well maintained and clean. Now for the negative... The first impression I got when I initially called was they're pretty stern. I asked about a beard lineup, clean up and trim. The website they use is pretty simple but I had to call Phil to set up the appointment because the website wasn't working for whatever reason. Come the day of my appointment everyone has a pretty friendly demeanor until you try to speak to em. Not sure why but when I asked one of the barbers which one was phil they sized me up and just said Phil's back there. Ok cool no problems I'm not from around the area so of course I gave em the benefit of the doubt because I'm a new customer. Now I get to phil and he's a more serious guy which surprised me because on his website he has a friendly picture and description of the shop. The whole time I was getting what I inquired about he was very serious and didn't talk at all. But with other people In the shop he was very friendly which was kinda weird but it is what it is. Good haircut... the next time I come around is when stuff got weird So I originally booked and appointment with one of the other barbers and sent a deposit of $30 to jarreu but ended up cancelling because Phil had a spot open. I cancel my appointment within 5 minutes of booking it expecting a refund but I wasn't issued one. Whether that was my fault for not asking for my refund back or not it was kinda shady that the barber didn't reach out or send it back. On top of that it was for sure before 24 hours that I had cancelled. I show up the day of my appointment following that weird debacle and this time around the same barber that had pointed me to Phil's direction still is giving me a weird look like I bothered him. Right off the bat the shop can be a little intimidating or can come off rude if you're not a regular as other customers seem to always be laughing and enjoying themselves. My haircut went like before but Phil was completely quiet just a few questions here n there but nothing more. Oh and the barber that took my $30 was just relaxing and didn't mention anything about a refund so oh well my loss. Overall I gave it a 1 star because plenty of other barber shops always give a welcoming experience and are glad to take you as their customer. Not sure if it's just me but it seems other people reviewing get the rude and bougie attitude from these guys. Sucks because they give good cuts but I'm all about the customer service. read more

I recently relocated to the bay area. I was originally staying in Brisbane while I was apartment hunting which is how I found this place. I ended up moving to Berkeley but I still drive here because the haircut is that good. I went to the same 2 barbers in San Diego for 4-5 years and since then haven't found a barber I really liked. My first haircut with Justin was perfect- great fade and beard line up. He actually listened to what I was looking for and knew how I styled my hair so he cut it based on the needs. I've got some weird cowlicks so when it gets cut too short it's miserable growing it back out. I've had four haircuts from him now and I was extremely happy with all four. Glad to finally have a regular barber again. Definitely recommend. The shop itself is really cool too. Nice design inside with two huge TVs. Been here 3 times over 12 months, and 3 different styles. Every time i go here it just gets better. Phil was awesome as usual and i am sure all the other barbers are too. My recommendation is be clear and precise on what you want in your cut. I recently got an undercut, with a fade on the side, and wanted the bangs to lightly trimmed and i got exactly what i wanted. I love the overall vibe and feel of the place with how chill the barbers are and the music that's usually playing on their TVs. Booking an appointment is pretty easy as well since you can either do it online or just call in for the next available appointment, even if it's the same day. Carl hung out extra time to get my cut fit in. True or not, didn't matter to me, because I was getting what I wanted in the end, which still makes Carl the hero in this story. Poor Customer service. None of these barbers are happy or seem like they want to be there. Do you really want a haircut from someone with this type of attitude. I don't!!! I came in one day to get a haircut and the guy that cut my hair did a decent job. Not great. I was worried about the cut half the time. He Didn't have any communication with me except with the guy next to him who was talking about how drunk he got over the weekend. as he got to the end it came out alright. 20.00??!! Ok, Cool. Soooo I decided to go back and get another cut. As soon as I walk in this time. I get cold stares, I didn't feel like anyone wanted to help me. With a smile on my face, I ask do you take walk-ins or appointment only?? I get blank stares and then the guy up front asks the guy in the back if he's available. Guy in the back pretty much acts like he was forced to cut my hair and says "yea". Before I sit down I ask can I use the restroom. I get this rude grunt and a yes... This same guy is suppose to cut my hair after I use the restroom?!! Walking to the restroom I get a call and also forgot to close the door. At this point I have Everyone's attention they're yelling at me to close the door but Im on a call and I cant stop? So I walk out and I am still on my call. Then who I assume to be the owner or manager tells me to "hurry up" also that I need to close the door to the bathroom next time.. I guess my presence or phone call bothered him so much that he Then he says "we dont have time for you today, leave!!" I didnt say a word I just walked out. Keep in mind no one was out there waiting. Waiting area Seats were empty there wasn't any other person women or child... I thought that was a weak excuse to kick out a paying customer who is supporting your business. Again, none of these guys are happy to be there and it shows. Poor Poor service. For all the trash talking they do leaving the restroom door open seems small and insignificant... I went to Philgood about a little over a week ago and came out with the best cut I've ever gotten. It was my first time at an actual barber shop and the guys there made me feel welcome. I saw Omar that day and he was a really chill dude that ran me through the process and told me exactly what he was planning to do. He took his time to make sure everything was perfect and by the end of the cut it looked like he did exactly that. The environment of the shop is really chill and helped me feel at ease. When he got started, he worked quickly. At no time did I felt uncomfortable or uneasy in the male environment, I was in and out in under an hour. This shop is always clean, lots of free parking, TVs, magazines and a friendly staff. There's even 2 liquor stores next door to get food and smacks while you wait. What I love about Philgood cuts is the relationships they make with their customers. They are real sincere when having convos with their clients. Been going here for over 2 years getting cut by Justin, I have crazy Biracial hair that grows in hella different directions and inexperienced and experienced barbers have had some tough times but from day one Justin has had me right from Tapers, Fades, Mohawks, Burst fades, Pompadours, Pompahawks and the many other cuts i've got in the over 2 years I been getting cut I get nothing but compliments. Sometimes there is a wait but what place that provides a service do you go in and not expect a wait??? Especially when the place is busy, to me thats just a good sign to a great service. I've seen every type of person in the shop from older people to kids, hipsters to hood cats it is what it is it's a barber shop theres going to be shit talking and MAN conversation unless woman and kids are present then these guys keep it respectful. I've never seen a bad cut walk out of this place and I'm there every 2 weeks if not every week some months depending on the style i'm rocking, I get my hair done by Justin exclusively but honestly the day I slide through and need a cut and he isn't there i'd feel more than comfortable having any barber in the shop give me a cut. I went to a place on Grand Ave for a basic haircut and it actually looked better than PhilGood. I only spend $15 and it took the guy no more than 15 minutes.
