Look for the round "NR" sign at the edge of the gray brick building (Al's Barber Shop), then walk down the pedestrian alley on the left side of the building until you come to the gallery entrance. The gallery is a pleasant surprise. There's a large, well-lighted space on the main floor plus a hallway and other nooks. You can then take the stairs to the basement to find another nice exhibition space. Nick focuses on established contemporary artists with regional, national, and international reputations. He has a great eye and every exhibit I've seen is of absolutely top quality. This gallery should not be missed.

Between long time residents,…read more visitors to the two large new hotels and art appreciation adults across the city and state that visit regularly to CU, this is a nice collection,some local artists some national. This is not art for a dorm room. It's quality original art. A friend and I stopped in on the way to lunch on the Hill. This renovated space is perfect for a gallery. Though previously everything from office space to a bicycle shop, blending different building ages and styles for this use gave it a unique feel. Original hardwood floors, stark white plasters walks, glass block to let in light without street distraction and white painted high ceiling hvac is the perfect structure. Nick was present to answer some questions. Every piece on exhibit has an assigned number and the printed inventory list is available for visitors to take as they browse. The container is on a table on the lower level. It includes the name of the artist, the name of the piece and the price. Not outrageous, appropriate for the quality and for homes or offices. I wish I still had need and room for more art. If you do, stop in and take a look. A new collection will be going up soon. I'll stop back in the winter and take another look.

Not only was his work AMAZING (seriously, go check it out next week at First Friday!) but the whole building was really cool. It was a smaller studio, but it was beautiful with half of the walls having exposed bricks. I looked through the other sections and all of the other artists that were featured had very amazing pieces of work. Everything was vibrant, funky, original, eccentric, and beautiful. I've been through a lot of the galleries in the area before, but this is definitely my favorite!

I undertook the long drive up to Colfax to go to the opening reception (featuring a friend of a…read morefriend of mine). It was hosted at the Abend Gallery. This show runs from March 2nd through April 7th, 2012. The tagline is "1 Gallery, 2 Shows, 3 Points of View (Ann Gargotto, Jean Shom, Cheryl St. John) + Cake and Pretty Horses (Michael Dowling -- Solo Exhibition)". The Gallery is quite large and is a very nice, eclectic space. I heard that there used to be a grocery store on this location. Currently, the Gallery is set up in such a way that the main rooms are subdivided to allow focus on individual pieces and groups as your circulate through the gallery. The last room was set up as a larger, more open area. This room was devoted to "Cake and Pretty Horses". I saw some thought provoking, and emotion inducing, paintings. Some reminded me of O'Keeffe's, some were very evocative landscapes, others would not have looked out of place at the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, MT. The pieces that I came to see were the ones by Michael Dowling. Yes, there were a ton of horse paintings. I think my sister, when she was was 11, would have been enthralled. The play of light and shadow in his work was very cool. I particular enjoyed the "Round Cakes 1" (sp) painting, which was done on the bottom of an old, round table. It almost seemed to be pulling all the ambient light into a black hole (if you will) with a small, understated, yet illuminated, cake demanding your focus and attention. Michael seems to have a wry sense of humor, when you talk to him. As part of the reception, Abend gallery was pouring red and white wines, they were offering soft drinks, and they had a yummy selection, of cheese, crackers, dips, veggies, fruit, and sweets.

Robert Anderson has been a long-time Denver gallerist with a unique focus on fine art photography…read more He unfortunately closed the gallery at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. A new space recently became available just a couple of doors east of the previous location and Robert seized the opportunity to reopen in April 2025. The new gallery is a bit smaller than in the past, but an old and tired storefront has been thoroughly remodeled to provide a clean and elegant gallery space. There's a very nice mix of historic and contemporary photography plus a few non-photographic fine art pieces that have caught Robert's eye. He has excellent taste and the refreshed gallery is well worth a visit.
