I thought that, for the prices, it would be just another "Estancia" restaurant. But, I was pleasantly surprised with the dishes that I have tried here. I like the following dishes: Pomelo & Shrimp Salad, Bun Cha Gio Thit Nuong (Fried Spring Rolls, Grilled Pork Patties with Rice Noodles), Pho Bo (Beef Noodle Soup), and Pho Bo Kho (Beef Stew Noodle Soup). I almost always order the Fresh Sugarcane Juice to go with my food. The dishes are actually good for two hungry people. Also, the service was fast and the servers were friendly. One thing you will love with Vietnamese food, your dish will always be served fresh and tasty!

The bowls of Pho are indeed very generous in size, while the broth is savory and flavorful no matter what type of meat you order. Add chunks of juicy beef and supremely chewy rice noodles and it's just the perfect pick-me-up after a long day's work. If the weather's too hot for some steaming bowls of noodle soup, Ba Noi's also serves other delicious dishes such as their lemon grass chicken bowl topped with noodles. And did I mention their Vietnamese coffee? It comes in this fancy shmancy Vietnamese coffee pot-thing that makes the experience so magical and sweet. And I mean literally sweet, because of the condensed milk. Ba Noi's? More like Ba Nice lol amirite? Anyone? Zzzzzzzz

Apparently, Pho Hoa has many branches in the US as well as several here in the Philippines. This happens to be a Pho Hoa/My Thai establishment so you can select from either menus. I ordered a combination pho for my dad that included brisket, flank, tendon, beef and meatballs. My daughter had her favorite BBQ pork bahn mi but only had the opportunity to eat half as it took about 20 minutes to prepare. LI kept it light with an order of pork and shrimp spring rolls, nothing too exciting there. My niece had a vegetarian pad Thai although she said it lacked a bit of seasoning and ended up using the fish sauce from the spring roll as an added flavoring agent. My sister had the fried pork rice paper rolls. For desert, we shared the coconut and Pandan pudding. As a California native where there are so many Vietnamese and Thai restaurants to choose from especially in the SoCal/OC area, it's a little hard for me to not be critical of what I know Vietnamese and Thai flavors should taste like. The seasoning can definitely be enhanced a bit more to have a bolder presence on your palette. I do commend the staff for their attentiveness which is a plus in my book.

In it's place was an Easter egg hunt for the kids.... fine. Instead, we decided to eat at the closest restaurant we could find, which was literally Nha Em. In the US most restaurants would be packed on Easter weekend, but not here. We got in, no problem and were seated immediately. Our first impressions were: - Cute, nicely simple but nicely designed interior - All window walls, so even with the AC on, it was a bit toasty (it's summer here, and this restaurant is on the roof of the mall) We ordered the Pho Bo solo for 290 pesos each. Pretty small portion (US standards, normal for the Philippines). The beef quality wasn't the best, with half the protein coming in the form of a meatball. Broth was, eh, and the noodles were over done. Overall, ok, not yuck, but not worthy for a second try.

The meat in fried spring rolls tasted bad and cooked in old oil and much of the lettuce was limp and brown on the edges. What's important with Vietnamese cuisine is freshness of ingredients which was unfortunately not the case here. My least favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Manila and I've been to many.

If I am going to pay a lot of money for good food, might as well spend it on a big juicy burger or a large slice of meat-lovers pizza. Last week, when I went out with my grandparents for lunch, we decided to eat in Pho Hoa. I wasn't too excited, but I can't really say no to my grandparents. Once we stepped inside, we were immediately greeted by a waitress who was more than happy to answer all of our questions regarding their menu. I ordered their Vermicelli Bowl, which included noodles, grilled chicken, veggies, and deep-fried spring rolls; it is also served with a clear sweet and sour sauce with lemon grass. I am not going to lie--I liked the whole dish. I can't get over the taste of the deep-fried spring rolls and the grilled chicken. From the taste and texture of the vegetables, it's easy to know that they are fresh. It's always good to try something new every once in a while. I thought I would hate Pho Hoa, but I ended up loving it! This one deserves a 5 out of 5.

So, if I need a quick fix, I promised myself that I will only go to a Pho Hoa! I love this place. I always get the pho bo here and it's so good. The beef broth is very flavorful and the pieces of beef are super tender. It never disappoints! Plus, compared to other places, when you order a large bowl, you get a heap of noodles and meats. Other places will just fill your bowl with more broth to make it look like a bigger portion. Also, the dipping sauce is on the sweeter side but it goes very well with the fried spring rolls and pomelo salad! So happy that this place is a quick drive away. Thank you for being an old reliable. Yay! :)

And on this particular day I saw that The Soup Kitchen had a tomato-based veggie soup (I'm vegan), but I was taken aback by the price as it's a bit too spendy--the smallest bowl for already Php 125? Well, I was starving and there wasn't much else appropriate for vegans at Cash and Carry's food kiosks, so might as well give it a shot. The soup was pretty flavorful, and I enjoyed it, though I wouldn't say it was remarkable. But I do know that if this cost me Php 60 I would be delighted. For Php 125, one would expect more, so I did. Oh well?

That's how the siomai thing got started, how takoyaki got started, and so many others. I don't know if there's a lot of this already but I thought it was pretty one of a kind when I saw this soup kiosk, aptly titled The Soup Kitchen. I've always been a soup person, especially since my mom loves to experiment and create different types of soups at home. This food kiosk indulges exactly that kind of curiosity with an attractive display of black commercial soup warmers all arranged in a neat row at the very facade of the kiosk. Just that, nothing else. There's about seven or eight different types of soup and you just pick which one you want and the attendant serves it to you. You can choose among a quarter, half, or full bowl sizes or get one of the meal-type items where the soup comes in a bread bowl and you can have a sandwich on the side. The soup menu changes everyday from their bank of over a hundred soup recipes which they make from the freshest ingredients. It's pretty pricey for a food kiosk type of thing at about Php120 and up, but it can be a decent, healthy meal, and soup is always good!
