The dad in your life is a kind person who also appreciates breathing so, please repeat step one :). Lastly, mb consider in doing a road trip & see all the wonders that aren't in your wheelhouse in your Indy area?!? Why not? Perhaps you'll find a new fav?!?Using the Yelp's map feature, the Waze app, or GPS'g the address on your navigation system outta inform you of your ETA. I'd highly recommend preforming your own solo concert in your car. That's right, inside your own car all the way to Indy Fireworks. Whatever happened earlier that got your goat up isn't in your car with you. You being on this mission may become the ray of sunshine in your celebration extravaganza event. Never know unless ya try! If you know me, then you likely also know I'm not really the Rural King target customer. I've…read morealways been fascinated by the store, however, I've never visited until I decided to drop in while having breakfast at the nearby Emmy's. I was on my way to do some more clearing out of my recently passed father's home. I've been intentionally having experiences that make me smile in an effort to balance all the emotions. What can I say? Rural King made me smile. From looking at other reviews, it's obvious that this is a relatively new spot for Rural King. It's on the western end of Avon not long before you head into Danville. While I tend to be a city boy (eastside of Indy), my parents lived in Putnam County and were what I'd call rural-lite. You will mostly find Rural King in, you guessed it, rural areas because it's a store clearly aimed at the rural lifestyle. That said, there's much to find for a city boy like me and often at much better prices than you'd expect. For example, the bird seed that I bought today was clearly at a much better price than you'll find in most stores and even online options (including the not named mega-online option). There's accessible parking here and an easy to enter front entrance. Aisles are wide enough for wheelchair users and there are employees present who are more than willing to help. They are friendly without being pushy. As I looked around, I will admit I really was having quite a bit of fun. Rural King carries clothing (mostly work/farm brands), gardening items, outdoor furniture, farm items, home goods, automotive, pet, and quite a bit more. They offer popcorn and coffee for shoppers. I was amazed at the bird seed prices. As a person fairly new with ensuring my bird feeder is always full, a place like Rural King makes that possible. Rural King carries all the familiar quality brands (Carhartt galore here) and the atmosphere for shopping is warm, welcoming, and yet also professional. If I hadn't been on the way to clear out a house, I'd have no doubt bought even more. I still bought bird seed as it was simply too good to pass up. My birds said "Thank you." The check out person was super friendly (she apologized for being a bit slow as she had some difficulty scanning a price). She signed me up for rewards (I have no idea why I signed up as I don't live close) and offered help (I should mention I am a wheelchair user) without being overly pushy about it. This was a blast. I would easily return as much for the atmosphere as the items. Good people. Good products. Good prices. I'll be back.

I am not a local to the area but have family friends in town we frequently visit. They have always had a bigger selection of bird feed or all types for your outdoor feathered friends as well as cool little hanging feeders. Depending on the season they have livestock as in chicks, ducklings, turkeys and even rabbits. The kids always get a kick out of that. I dig the place for the snacks you can find that to me seem to be somewhat unique. Even the toys they have are something different and plushies galore! Always got to get my kids a couple. The staff has always been super friendly and seem like they actually enjoy being there. Check it out!

Ivan (owner) recognized that my friend had just been there. He got up to give me prices and place my items in a bag as I selected them. He was on point with pricing and background on the items. He even allowed us to take photos and asked us to tell our friends. Such a humble business owner who doesn't have a Facebook page for people to follow. He and his counterpart "D" were happy to have our business. I advised Ivan I would put him on Yelp so he could increase his business. Told him it's a good way to get business reviews and people could find him. If you are in need of reasonably priced fireworks, go see them!

It's pretty firmly established that I have a love-hate relationship with most Goodwill stores. As…read morean organization with a central mission of "empowering people to increase their independence and reach their potential through education, health and employment," I often feel like Goodwill falls woefully short of this mission in the operational aspects of the average Goodwill stores. A good majority of the stores are incredibly lacking in terms of accessibility and while they do employ and train folks with disabilities I've often found the stores quite dismal in terms of basic work skills that would allow individuals to enter a more competitive work situation. In short, I don't believe Goodwill stores tend to live into their stated values. However, there are always exceptions and I believe it's important to acknowledge these exceptions. My visit yesterday to the Goodwill on Michigan Road was a noteworthy exception. This particular location is, I believe, an older location. It's in a free-standing building adjacent to Lowe's and Aldi. There used to be a fast food restaurant directly in front of it, though it has since closed. This seems to be a smaller location than some of the more recent spots, though I did notice they seem to have a larger than usual storage area. There are a handful of parking spots up front and they do meet ADA guidelines - strangely, this is not always true at Goodwill. They do have the usual appropriate curb cuts and nearly every location, possibly every one here in Central Indiana, has automatic doorways. Because this is a smaller location, it's organized a little differently than many locations. You still have clothing for women on the right, for men on the left, and housewares toward the back. The cashiers are close to the door. This is fairly close to other interior layouts, however, it's different enough that I actually had to look at signage. While I don't get to this area often, I grew up in this area and it's a weird mix of slightly challenged neighborhoods, working professionals, and healthcare with the nearby Ascension campus. I did find aisles a lot tighter here. That makes sense considering the issues with size, but it makes it hard for wheelchair users like myself. Several times, I had to either exit an aisle or not enter one because I couldn't pass through it. However, there was a lot to like here. The clothing was generally in good shape. It was mostly sized accurately (a huge issue for Goodwill). This Goodwill seemed fairly well staffed (though they are hiring). I did not see the usual "apply here" kiosk, though I may have just missed it. The employees here were friendlier than I often find in Goodwill stores including a positive management (or leadership) presence. I was particularly impressed by the cashier, a young man who went above and beyond in customer service to the point of even assisting me as I returned the cart after getting them to my car. He was friendly, helpful, and I could easily see his skills transferring to a more competitive setting. I tend to think Goodwill is overpriced. This has been exacerbated by the pandemic - jeans for $7.99? I don't think so. While you can still certainly find good deals, given that Goodwill does tend to have major issues with accurate sizing I tend to shy away from anything too expensive in clothing. The 50% off Saturdays, I believe, are still on hold. They do still have Goodwill Rewards, though even the rewards have lessened since the pandemic. Essentially, you shop and donate to Goodwill because of the mission. It's a "feel good" thing. They tend to be the priciest of the thrift stores, though to be fair they also do MUCH more for the community than most of the thrift stores. Here in Central Indiana, that includes the Excel Center, Nurse-Family Partnership, Job Training and Support, and other services. While I've definitely had my issues with Goodwill, I found this experience to be an overall positive one with a clean store, friendly employees, and customer service indicative of people actually being trained and equipped to improve their lives.

It appears that Goodwill is currently on a hiatus from hosting their first Saturday sales (50% off everything) but I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. This particular location is also conveniently located next door to a Lowe's and Aldi...and around the corner from Trader Joe's. In summary: not the fanciest/shiniest goodwill I've ever been to but it certainly is still worth a visit!!
