Nice trails
David A.

This is such a charming park. It is definitely large by town park standards, with hiking trails that wind throughout the woods and fall creek. There are several places where the trails cross under a train track, including one spooky feeling tunnel, and several bridges over creeks and streams. For one section of trail it even borders a very large cemetery, best neighbors in the world. The actual city park feeling portion has fall creek running right through the center with several small falls and some great wading/creek stomping area. I highly recommend this place for a family hike, creek stomping, a romantic walk in the woods on an afternoon date, or even a spooky walk at dusk.

Note that this park was fairly under construction during my July 2019 visit. Based on signage they gave several upgrade projects in the works like improved public restrooms. This park is conveniently located two blocks off the main drag in historic downtown Pendleton and neighboring a cute local coffee shop. In the park you'll find several shaded areas with benches, pubic restrooms, swings and old and New play equipment (picture the shiny colorful new jungle Jims and Old metal play equipment of my childhood coexisting in the same park...). Parking is easy to find and there are a handful of shade shelters available with picnic benches. The park is lightly landscaped and features historic-looking light poles.

Falls Park in Pendleton, Indiana is the first place I head for when I get to town, night or day. It's in the center of the town that is in the center of my heart, where I have so many warm childhood memories and even memories of adult visits here. At the old swimming area there are two waterfalls that never cease to be pretty in any season. The beautiful pond has ducks swimming thru it, a lighthouse, and two cannons for kids to climb on. There is a Veterans Memorial to local soldiers killed in the service of their country, a gazebo for concerts, picnics and parties, brick picnic shelters, more ducks everywhere, a playground for kids, and in the former bath house where we used to pay our 20 cents and change into our bathing suits, the Pendleton Historical Museum is housed, a real town treasure. The only thing missing (and the reason for taking one star away) is the old "Maypole" that used to be in the playground, where I remember swinging around till I was dizzy when I would play there on childhood visits to my grandmother's. I was shocked when, a few years ago, my mother, in her 80's, talked about how she wouldn't go on it because it gave her motion sickness. What?? It was there in her childhood too?? I was so disappointed when I went there in 2007 and for the first time in my life it wasn't there. Whenever I visit the Midwest I always fly into Indy airport and visit Pendleton first before I head up to Ohio and Michigan and come back here for more visit before I fly home. I envy any kid who got to grow up in this town (except for the snow and tornadoes!).

I was pleasantly surprised at the number of amenities this park has. While pulling into the entrance, I could see a manicured sitting park on the south west corner, a shaded playground, a gazebo, a lake with a cannon, and I could hear the sound of water. Recent rains had brought the water level up, so there was a definite rush across the falls. The falls, though small in comparison to Cataract Falls near Cloverdale or Clifty Falls near the Ohio, was still impressive. For a small creek, this west fork tributary of Falls Creek feeds Geist Resevoir and eventually joins the White River near 10th Street in Indy by IUPUI. As the water crashed into the lower level, the pooled water would swirl as if forming a whirlpool, but would be whooshed down the creek to the second smaller drop before it could form. There is a parking lot along the drop area and when the water is below flood stage, you can walk out on natural rock formations to a small bridge that spans over the channeled area above the falls. The rest of the park is filled with baseball diamonds and hiking trails. Between the falls and the diamonds is the Pendleton Historical Museum, but it is only open on weekends, so I wasn't able to include a description in my review. Overall, this makes for a nice day trip before dining at one of the local restaurants in Pendleton. Although it looks far from Indy, there is quick access from US 36 or I-69. Review #745

Busy evening at the fields.

For a town the size of Pendleton, the park system is enormous. Anyone looking to live in Pendleton proper to raise a family could do a lot worse...it really is very good. The park itself is spread out encompassing a large playground with pavilions, a fountain, gazebo, and Japanese style garden on one end and ending about a mile away with nearly a dozen softball and baseball fields on the other. In between is the historical museum, walking and biking trails, Brown olympic size outdoor pool with platforms and slides, and huge amounts of green space. The golf course on the other side of town also falls in the jurisdiction of the parks. Falls Park Rd. is sort of the de facto thoroughfare that links all the park components. I would be hard pressed to say I would walk from the main playground to the ball fields...it is long enough to probably drive. Traffic thru there is 20mph but I have noticed much worse. The crown jewel really are the ball fields though. It is large enough to host tournaments and I know that a daughter of a co-worker has travelled from south of Center Grove to get there. Youth softball and baseball are huge here and many age levels are represented. If swinging thru Madison county, stop by and take a stroll on a walking trail and check it out!

Noiiice!

Flat Fork Creek Park - Flat Fork Creek Park

Flat Fork Creek Park

I was a little bit nervous about signing up to do a 3k event in November, however, the opportunity…read morepresented itself and I knew I'd be able to visit a park I'd never been to before. Flat Fork Creek Park is part of Fishers Parks. Located at 101st and Cyntheanne Road, Flat Fork Creek Park offers just over 60 acres of relaxing fun for just about everyone in the family including a good amount of ADA accessibility. First off, you'll get a 60-foot sledding hill here. That's good to know as we inch toward winter. It's the tallest point in Hamilton County. There's also a 1.25 mile progressive mountain bike course that offers features for both mountain biking newbies and those with more experience. There's a beautiful fishing pond - state license required except for those 17 and under. Nearly 20 acres in the park are reforestation areas and there's a shelter with picnic tables that can be rented. Okay, that accessibility I mentioned? The 3k I did was a relatively small group, though it was centered around disability and had several disabled participants. The park includes an ADA accessible treehouse, a paved multi-use trail, and a boardwalk (I would note that while the boardwalk is, indeed, accessible, you do want to be a tad careful due to the side of the boardwalk that do offer a bit of a drop-off). You know what I think is really cool? They've created a ramp here so that even those with mobility issues can get to the top of the sledding hill - in most parks, that's an afterthought. As a side note, Fishers has won awards for their inclusion work and this park really shows it. This is really just a lovely park. You're not going to find a playground or other frequent park features, however, this beautiful park does a nice job of including everyone and weaving together nature with fun park adventures. This was my first time here. It won't be my last.

This is a really neat park to visit with kids, because they can go in and out of the huts, climb in and out of the archeology excavation site, and just have a good time learning about how people used to live on the land before we came along. There is also a very cool visitor's center with artifacts and treasures from a time long past, like a life-sized dugout canoe, animal skeletons, pottery shards, tools and weapons, and lots more. I took a foraging class here this summer, and it was really great learning about the edible plants that are on the park property. Best of all, it was free! But the class was so good that I would have paid for it. Different classes happen all year long, and many of them are free or very little cost. This park is actually very large, and there are different sections where you can hike, go zip lining and horseback riding. The zip lining and horseback riding areas are seasonal, so they're not open all year long.

The Geist Reservoir runs through the park, and when we visited, we saw people kayaking along the river. We had fun just throwing rocks into the water. Be advised that there are signs all around the park near the river that say that you shouldn't swim in the water because there is a strong undercurrent. So no swimming! The playground has a really neat play structure with lots of ropes, ramps and things to climb. My kids had a lot of fun here -- it's set up almost like an obstacle course. There are also slides, swings (including a swing for really young children), riding toys and tunnels. The ground is covered with wood chips, so it's nice and soft in case your kiddo falls. There are also benches all around so you can sit and see your kid play from whatever angle you happen to be in. There are restrooms just off of the playground, and they were relatively clean when we were there. Parking is plentiful and right by the playground.

I saw that Cyntheanne Park was a couple miles away and decided to stop in. Cyntheanne Park is part of the Fishers Parks system. Founded in 2010, Cyntheanne Park offers a landscape playground structure, five multi-purpose sports fields, a 1-mile paved multi-use trail, a natural grass trail, and it's also home to the Community Garden Program - this program allows residents to rent 10x10 foot plots of land to garden for the season. The Community Garden Program offers conventional and organic growing along with 4x9 foot raised bed plots. According to Fishers, this park is the only municipality in the country to have eight outdoor courts - including Cage Pickleball Challenge Courts. While Flat Fork Creek Park has a strong emphasis on nature, Cyntheanne has a strong sports focus with a football field, lacrosse fields, pickeball courts, rugby fields, trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. The park also has restrooms and solid parking. This is a bit more of an isolated park compared to Flat Fork Creek. While I would consider this park a bit less accessible than Flat Fork Creek, Fishers as a rule does pretty well at accessibility and you can definitely see those efforts here. If you're active in any of the sports going on here, this might be considered a destination park. For most, however, this really isn't a destination park. It's simply a very good community park and a great place to gather for residents of all ages and abilities. I wouldn't go out of my way to return here, however, I would no doubt return here when in the area.

The playground is a mud free one that is constructed on a rubber surface. It does not have much as far as equipment goes, but it features two jungle gyms. One of them is huge and has lots of slides, ladders and walkways. The other is a bit smaller and has a few slides and is for the little kids. You will also find a tight rope in the area and climbing rocks, and two banks of swings with traditional, special needs, and toddler swings on them. The equipment is not the newest, but is well maintained and in good shape. There are benches and picnic tables in the playground area for parents to sit while their littles are playing. The picnic tables have a small shade awning over them. Just like most of the park's amenities, it is very nice. The park is very clean and well maintained. I like its quarter mile walking/storybook trail loop and Mud Creek overlook where you can sit and enjoy the creek. With it being a nice park, it can get busy during nice weather, especially during school breaks and weekends. My little really liked the park and it was really hard to get my little to leave.
