I brought my 12 lb Westie for a haircut and 2 hours later was called saying she was ready to be picked up. When I arrived, I was told my dog was "dog and people reactive," and posed a threat to herself and groomers. I asked them to expound on this because I think all dogs respond to people and dogs since she is a DOG! She was shaking when I picked her up, which I have never seen before. During this conversation, my dog was sitting there next to other dogs calm and not barking. Her hair was not fully cut. I was so confused. My dog is very sweet and I have never been told this before. I brought her home. She went straight to her cage. She had discharge coming from her eyes. I am not sure if this was shampoo. I was concerned maybe she was stabbed in the eye with scissors and I called my vet. I have no idea what happened, but I was left confused and angry. When my wife called complaining that only half of her had been cut, they told us that they would give her one more chance, but would ban her from all PetSmarts if she didn't behave. They then recommended that my dog be put under general anesthesia at the vet to get a haircut, which is completely insane to think you should expose your dog to dangerous side effects of anesthesia to get a haircut. I have no idea what happened, but something happened because my dog came back shaking and would not leave her cage for a few hours. Despite them offering to finish the haircut for free (If she behaved!), I decided not to bring my dog back. Something bad happened to my dog, and maybe it was an accident, but the fact that they turned around and blamed the dog is incredibly unprofessional and unethical. I would give zero stars if I could. Nobody should bring there dog here. I paid $70 dollars for half a hair-cut and my dog to be traumatized, and they then blamed the dog who was the victim of their incompetence! read more

A couple weeks ago, we had a bad heat wave, and my air conditioning went out. We live on the top floor of an apartment building, so it was especially bad. My poor dog was in great distress, and I tried to taking her to multiple places to cool off, which either did not work or we were asked to leave. We wound up here, as I was also in the process of trying to find a cooling mat. Not only did they allow us to camp out on the floor as long as we needed to, which wound up being three hours, but they even brought me a chair so I didn't have to sit on the floor! They also let us test out the cooling mat, without even knowing if we would purchase it, which we definitely did. My dog's life was definitely saved that day! read more

Avoid at all costs. My dog was attacked a 22 pound cockapoo(who they claim instigated) who was mixed in with two larger dogs when there was a total of 6 dogs and two employees. When we first started going there we were told big and small dogs are separated. They have two rooms and choose not to seperate the big dogs from the smaller dogs. The store also for boarding services doesn't have any person there at night time anymore which a few of their employees have voiced their frustrations to my spouse and I regarding the direction of the store. read more

Rude employees! I wanted to buy some fish, and the girl who was at the fish department was very rude. She didn't want to sell me guppies because my 20-gallon tank apparently is too small for 10 guppies. She said they might die. I said I know, but I am not going to bring them back for a refund (I bought fish from them before and some did die very soon, but I never brought a single dead fish back, which is reflected on my store account). And she replied, "Oh, don't worry, I will make sure that won't happen!" And she called the cashier asking to void the return policy for this purchase. Who talks like that to the customer??? She could do the same without me knowing about it and not making those comments. Petsmart should teach their employees some work ethics! read more

As it turns out, PetSmart doesn't open until 9 am. But, the dog grooming place opens earlier. I didn't realize that when I went in this morning when I walked through the doors that automatically opened around 8:42. I went and picked out my dog food, stood in line behind another customer, and attempted to pay. Then the cashier said, "actually we are closed, but I'll ring you up anyways." I was confused. So asked what was happening that the door was open, he told me that about the grooming store. In that moment of awkwardness I tried to, commiserate with the cashier, "oh this must happen a lot huh?" I said. " I was rebuked, " no not really". I felt like I needed to defend myself, "who looks at an hours sign when walking into a store, if the door opens?" The cashier straight up condescendingly said to me, "A lot of people actually." Maybe I'm the jerk in this situation. But if the doors open, there is a cashier checking, and people are buying items wouldn't that be considered open? Instead I was passive aggressively shamed for not recognizing that the store was open, but not open. But also open. Just a weird experience that put a bad taste in my mouth for no other reason than the cashier was annoyed with me. Picking up dog food really shouldn't be so hard at 8:45 on a Saturday morning. read more

~December, 2019 update: I've spent more time in PetSmart over the last few months and have found a few of the small pet employees *extremely* knowledgeable and helpful when it came to our bearded dragon's lighting and food, which had made my life with an exotic animal so much easier. The check out staff have also been so friendly and helpful from purchases to returns/exchanges, so the store has really made some positive upgrades in attitudes and helpfulness!~ So since Petco went out of business, I've been forced to shop at PetSmart in a pinch. It is nothing to write home about, it's dark and there has never been an employee around in the dozen times I've been in the past few months, other than at the check outs. Petsmart's only choice for our bearded dragons food is in the picture (green bag on the right), and when I sent feedback about this election, I was told that customer reports requested "less variety, as it was confusing"-umm, really?? Okay, then at least choose one brand that has real food in it, not chunks of dust and sad looking dried veggies. The Petsmart choice is in the right (only peas have any substance, no other real chunks of vegetables-mostly dried dust/tiny pieces-and mostly carrot, which our dragon doesn't like), and on the left is my recurring Amazon purchase, Zilla brand (notice chunks of green bean, peas, bok choy, zucchini) -that I used to be able to buy at Petco (RIP Vernon Hills Petco-was my fave). Sad selection for reptiles, not sure about for the rest of the pets, but o hope it's much better for pets and their owners sakes! With the updated location, PetSmart is upping its game. From the new doggy day care to puppy classes in the store, it is presenting a new image. My boys love visiting this location and checking out the kittens as well. Generally the prices are a little cheaper than PetCo and I am finding myself turning toward this location more and more. When the dog food that I wanted wasn't on the shelf, I was able to get an associate to check the back for me. Also, the Martha Stewart collection is adorable. Yes. Excellent customer service. Great prices and you can bring your fluff balls with. First time we came she was so excited and had an accident . I asked for something to sanitize their area and they cleaned it for us. There's a rep in the days that comps you coupons. Excellent customer service. They have a reptile section with live crickets for my sons Lizzard. That he has list interest in . Guess he's hard to snuggle with. He picked him out of the two because another lizard are his toe. How's that for empathy? Pet sitting , dog grooming and you can adopt furry felines. There retail policy for returns is excellent. Lots of toys and clothes for the well dressed pooch. Totally unacceptable attitude especially by the assistant manager at that day camp! She did not accept our pet to daycare due to not being able to put a "sticker" on his collar. it is one thing to follow a policy, but the lack of empathy and smug attitude is what made us decide never to come back and board our pets there ever. it caused us to miss work that day where we cannot afford to be absent. this assistant manager has been like that every time we have interaction with her. there was another time that we booked through the PetSmart hotline confirmed and all to only be told by her that she was not seeing the reservation and she cannot accommodate our pet. good luck with your career there and continue alienating people there. you've lost a customer and we will never step foot there again ever. read more

We love this place. The petsmart staff are friendly and helpful. The adoption counter however, is the exact opposite. Husband and I were REALLY interested in adopting a cat, and we had our dog with us while we were there browsing. Our dog was just sniffing around and a cat got upset, the adoption attendant came out, very charged and yelled for help from the petsmart staff to get our dog away from the cat enclosures. Our dog was not jumping, was not aggressive or disruptive. He never once asked us to back away prior to him exploding. It was super aggressive and unmerited. Sad situation. We have a blind eleven year old vizsla and have boarded her several times at Petshotel. Both before and after she became blind. They are caring and kind and have gotten to know her and what she needs and likes. I do private playtime now because of her blindness instead of group playtime which we did before. 12/7/2020 @ 2:30pm. Wanted a fish and stood at the fish department for 10 mins. Had to find help. Asked an old woman with gray hair for help and immediatley gave me attitude. She rolled her eyes and told me to "give her a minute". She refused to sell me a goldfish saying my ten gallon aquarium was too small. That's fine I guess but she didn't offer any advice on which fish would be suitable or any other help at all. Just stood there and told me my aquarium was unsuitable. Their aquatic department clearly does not have a training program for its employees. I have to teach the person (different one every time) the difference between males and females, which fish are compatible, which fish are which (even though there is a picture next to the name), etc. There is always a poor selection and a meager supply of what they do have. Having a 200-pound mastiff I wish I could buy his food at PetSmart. However, the prices are ridiculously high. For example, I can but a box of Ol Roy 21 munchy bones at Walmart for $15.86. Store: The employees are unhelpful and lackadaisical AF. Twice after purchases the cashier said "here ya go" and handed me the receipt. That's a real pet peeve of mine. The store layout is actually nice, all the impulse purchases are on the main aisle, you could do a loop in 5 minutes clockwise getting a cute outfit for your dog, food, treats, and toy and check out. Banfield: The Vet I've seen was somewhat knowledgeable. I hate the waiting area by other stressed out or aggro dogs crowded around store endcaps. Banfield is actually a gag. You think you can save money or help your pet with this, but when I ever needed to get in for anything NOT a yearly checkup/shots the wait for any of them in the entire county I live in or nearest one was 2 months. My dog had a scratch one day w a small amount of blood and I couldn't get in anywhere. Another time he was moping, stoic, refusing food and I called every Banfield in Lake and Cook County and it was a 2-3 month wait. I took him to an emergency care. Now he had his yearly exam and add on treatments at Banfield the previous day. The vet I took him emergency said his glands were full and nails weren't done which caused his distress. So I ended up paying hundreds of dollars for what I previously paid Banfield for less than 12 hours prior and that they assured me they did. I'm a big believer in candor and integrity in my personal life, and when I'm working as a service person. Just admit you couldn't or forgot to do it. For them to lie and charge me for it like I'm an idiot is bs... not to mention how scared I was he got sick or exposed to something there the day before & had to pay like $300 extra dollars. I'm glad I found him a higher level private practice and very honest vet with absolutely stellar reviews (not just on yelp but word of mouth) and there's been no snags getting him in same day or week and getting honest talk with sincere care to my boy. Daycare/Boarding: I've used the daycare a couple x and my dog wasn't in the play groups, which I prefer. When I called they said he was walked 3x in their dinky playrooms alone w the handler for 10 minutes each time and they showed him affection "yeah.... uh.... I walked him.... he had um fun" I'm not sure I believe them, they made me wait on hold a long time on the phone and sounded stilted AF. When I picked him up each time it was over 10 minutes for them to bring him, even when slow at the Daycare/Pet Hotel which was agony and had real "whatever" attitudes about me, my dog, the stays, checking out. Very alien to me since I love LOVE love dogs and have worked w them in the past. read more

As I walk into your store and I'm assaulted with this overpowering smell of urine throughout the entire store. I am absolutely applauded by the smell. The closer I got to the pet hotel and daycare the stronger the smell became. The smell is so strong my friend was gagging and needed to leave the store. One of your employees then proceeds to touch my friends dog without even asking, just walked passed and leaned down and petted her dog, and continued on, without saying anything. What if he was nervous!? Or reactive? Absolutely unacceptable. Then I go onto your islands, on the outside of the store, and step in dog poop. It was everywhere. My friend and I also stepped different piles. The lighting is terrible. With this being said I do understand that Petsmart has no control of the outside of the store. I've been going to this PetSmart when it was located across the way. I love their new location. It's more spacious & they offer a Vet service as well as a day care facility. I can not vouch for the pet hospital or Pet Hotel, but I usually go to PetSmart for dog food, treats, nylabones, jackets, etc. I think their pricing is better than PetCo. We used to take our two dogs to their grooming department & Susan was great. But she does not work their anymore so I started looking elsewhere. Their grooming services are more expensive than PetCo. My only gripe is why we don't see the benefit with their store card? If we purchase more at PetSmart, we should have more coupons sent to us. But we rarely shop at PetCo & we always get coupons mailed to us. read more

This Petsmart location is great. I've been coming here for about a year with my American Pit Bull puppy for grooming, medical needs, training and pets hotel. The staff at this store is very friendly and accommodating. They remember their customers, pay attention to special requests and are great with pets. Just last week we brought our dog for grooming and her nose began to bleed in the middle of the procedure. Anna called me immediately and was very helpful with calming my puppy down and getting us to the doctor's office. There was nothing serious, but I was grateful for her kindness and concern. Also, we signed up for puppy training course, which turned out to be extremely helpful, since I was not experienced dog owner and desperately needed some guidance. Of course, the idea of having classes inside the store is genius. For two months that we've been taking the training course, I bought so much useless crap that since then my dog became indifferent to toys and treats altogether. But we've met many great people with dogs during the classes, which eased our puppy's social adaptation. After almost a year of having my dog, I tried some other pet stores and must admit that Petsmart is lacking in food selection, especially the newer brands. Their prices are probably lower than average and they offer coupons occasionally. But I mostly keep coming here because of the people, who work at the grooming salon and day camp/hotel. They always make me feel safe to leave my dog with them, be it for an hour or a couple of days. read more

I love the new look of PetSmart in Vernon Hills and am glad that it made the move across the street to take over the old Linens and Things spot. The store is very neat, organized and clean. The employees seem friendly and I definitely enjoy getting a good look at all the cute dogs that come by with their owners. The only downside would be the price, which is definitely far more expensive than other shops, but I prefer the quality of the merchandise, which is why I shop here. Also, they carry a much larger selection of pet food as opposed to the grocery store or a Wal-Mart or Target. Also, my cashier was talking to another employee as she was ringing up my items. I usually get my puppy groomed at kraiser's natural pets but by recommendation of family friend, my mom decided take my puppy here for a summer cut. He came back with a cut on his leg. PetSmart ended up paying for his vet bills on benfield hospital. The vet had to put a tissue glue on his leg and he is on pain medication for 4 days. I am grateful for their service but this is not acceptable. I don't know what they do to him, he started shaking in PetSmart and my puppy never gets scared with my old groomer. I will never take my puppy here again. If this happened to human, the hair stylist would be fired. read more
