Left my 4 month puppy Sunday for a grooming and came back to a different dog. The length was so much shorter than agreed on. I was told my puppy would still be fluffy and would need to comb his hair and now there isn't anything to brush. His tail was not cut he had a couple knots. I was charged a 10$ fee for special care due to my puppy not allowing himself to be groomed in the face area. My dog wouldn't eat , all he wants to do is sleep and will not go outside after this grooming. Not a good experience at all. read more

My review is specifically about the dog training at the Gurnee location. I can't say enough great things about Yolanda (the dog trainer at PetSmart). From the very first session, it was clear that she truly loves what she does and brings a wealth of knowledge, patience, and positivity to every training moment. My French Bulldog can be a bit stubborn and strong-willed (as many Frenchies are!), but Yolanda approached every challenge with a calm confidence and an understanding smile. She took the time to understand my dog's personality and tailored her approach to suit his temperament. Not only did my pup learn essential obedience skills, but Yolanda also helped me become a better and more confident dog parent. My dog is a puppy and year old the first time I took him there it was a great experience snowball was completely matted and they removed all his hai. The second time the complain he was to anxious suggested medication to call him . So on the third trip medication was used said he was still to anxious with clippers near his face they only shave down every but his face finished with so fast we had plans for my son birthday I called to ask what time they closed it's was 5 pm only got ruled answer saying he's been there seven hours and added aftercare and hung up. Terrible experience with Tabatha from the grooming salon I dropped my dog for a bath and hair cut He was booked online so I had the price listed already When i went to pick him up I was charged extra When I asked what is the charge for She said it was for scissoring cut and she added the fee When i asked her when we agreed on the add on she erupted on me that her time was expensive and yelled in front of everyone that if i wanted it cheaper good luck finding a place that can do it I was stumped...!!! Tabatha was amazing! Our puppy looked so cute after his haircut. I was nervous because of the 1 star reviews on here, but it looks like the people that are disappointed are the ones who don't groom their dogs daily. If you have a long haired dog, you need to do brushing everyday, if not at least 3-4 times a week... And then you get mad at the groomers for shaving your dog for being MATTED. It's so painful for the dog and it will take HOURS to de-matt if you can even de-matt it. Brush your dogs people! read more

The grooming department has gone downhill over the years. The staff could use some training. Every time I go I encounter an issue...today I was charged an extra $10 because my dog's tail had "a little matting". Other times, the groomer is not comfortable grinding my dog's nails (after I add on the grooming package that includes nail grinding). They will also charge more if you bring your pet in Thursday - Sunday. This is crazy. The McHenry location is just as bad. I took my dog here for the first time thinking that they were more professional and will do a good job grooming my dogs hair. I give them a photo of the haircut style I wanted and how long. When I picked up my dog I was beyond disappointed, they cut the hair soo short that doesn't even looks like a ShihTzu, the fur doesn't look even, it's all chopped (need new clippers or scissors maybe) I just don't have words to explain how bad this was, I will never go back to this place. I know I las for something really short in compare to the original photo, but they cutting hair looks very rough and I asked for clippers 4 1/2, looks like they used number 2 for the entire body. DO NOT BOOK WITH TABITHA. I honestly wish I could put zero stars. I took my Maltese dog to the groomer and set the appointment online TABITHA IS HORRIBLE! DO NOT BOOK WITH HER!! She told me that I have to come back before five o'clock to get him I come to find out that's when her shift ended. When I go to pick him up he is cut beyond short choppy and looked like she was rushing to finish him( Was four service). I asked for a call 25 min before he is done so I can get him. I called them and they said he was going to be done in 15 min. I asked what did she do to his ears and the girls said I don't know with out any help your groomer has left. They said she was having a hard time cutting him. My dog came out looking sick! Choppy. I asked for a refund and they gave me ten dollars off... which is ridiculous making me pay 65 dollars for this. TABITHA IS NOT EXPERIENCED AND SHOULD NOT BE HANDLING SCISSORS! The manager should have given me a full refund. I will be back in to talk to another manager who can solve this issue. I had left my mini schnauzer's hair uncut for the winter but he needed a touch up, especially around the wee wee (too much overgrowth) and also had a few matted spots. So we ventured to see groomer Jodie at PerSmart in Gurney IL. My understanding was that Jodie was a very attentive and professional groomer who always gave a great advice about the dog's wellbeing and was highly recommended by a friend. I'm sorry to say it wasn't the case. No groomer with common sense would shave off the entire dog's hair in the midst of January with temperatures in the single digits. The dog who loved playing in the snow outside is like a different person now, I can't even toilet him without a struggle. This grooming cost me extra $100 for snow gear to make my puppy comfortable outdoors again. We are first time dog owners, he just turned one year old. I would know better for the future. I wish Jodie gave us options instead of saying that all she could do is shave him off. We could have managed and shave off the matts only or wait until summer. Anyway, I'm very disappointed with the service. Moreover, my dog smelled bad afterwards, I'm sure the cages they keep them in are dirty. read more

Need to leave this review because this experience still upsets me a year later. I tried to do formal puppy training for the first time ever here with Lisa as the trainer. I do not know about dog training obviously that is what I was there for. My puppy was very excited by all the other dogs and kept barking. Instead of politely telling me how I could stop her from barking Lisa yelled at me in front of the entire class I was so embarrassed. She constantly made little remarks about owners or their dogs and always made sly comments to make you feel stupid for not already knowing everything about dog training. The employees who help with the fish section in PetSmart are horrible. I have a 20 gallon tank at home and have had fish as my pets and my hobby for almost my entire life, and have never seen this much disrespect. I came in for a goldfish, and asked the lady who was working for one. I told her how big my tank was, and she responded by saying my tank wasn't big enough.... for a gold fish?!? She continued to say that goldfish can grow very big, which I agree, they COULD (if they are in a lake or 50 gallon tank); however, most fish species grow to the size of your tank, and gold fish are one of those species. Regardless of this, I took a few pictures of one tank in particular that had over 50 dead fish piled up on the bottom. The employees quality of service to customers and their pets is awful. Instead of the goldfish I wanted going to a good home, he will likely die with the rest in a 10 GALLON TANK filled with hundreds of other dying fish. Which is sad. I've taken my 3 Irish Setters here for years and was always pleased with the results - however after today - I WILL NEVER TAKE ANY OF MY DOGS THERE AGAIN!!! AND I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU DON'T EITHER! It was after things cleared with the pandemic that I noticed a BIG change in this grooming center. I made appointments for full haircuts/baths, etc. - the Chi package. The day before the appointment they called and cancelled stating that they only had one groomer. Now I understand that one person can only do so much, but when you have an appointment that was made over a month out - there's something wrong with that. Today, 9/27/2022, I took my smallest IS in for the works. I picked him up 4 hours later and to my dismay not only was he not cut/groomed as discussed; but they were telling me that they thought he was having seizures. First of all - he doesn't suffer with seizures and if that's truly what they thought - why didn't they call me, as that would have been a medial emergency?? So, here's my question to anyone reading this - ARE YOUR PETS REALLY SAFE WITH THEM?? These groomers obviously think they are well versed in veterinary medicine OR are full of BS. They also stated that he was biting (this from a dog that would probably lick you death). This dog has been going to PetSmart grooming in Gurnee for over 9 years and not one time did any of the "original" groomers note having any problem with him. I say, "Original" because all the original groomers quit and what they have now is all young, inexperienced individuals that shouldn't be there. As far as the actual grooming - they shaved all his leg fringe off! That is not how you groom an Irish Setter! They either don't know the different breed cuts or simply don't want to put the time in to do it correctly. What they did was a hap hazard groom and attempted to give BS reasons to justify, if I complained. Now, if that wasn't enough...they also had the audacity to charge me a "special handling" fee. For what? For them not knowing how to do their job or for them to be lazy and take the short cut by shaving? PetSmart should be ashamed! Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time or money - take your pet to groomers that know what they're doing and actually want to provide a good grooming experience for your pet. We've always groomed and bathed our furry guy at home however as he's getting older we just don't feel as comfortable with cutting his nails like we used to be. We thought we'd start taking him on occasion for a groom not just because it's needed but because it's also a treat for him. Unfortunately and at his recent and second visit, our dog must have had some sort of stomach upset. The staff phoned to let us know. Given he had a few accidents they did their best to get him cleaned up and made sure we were immediately aware. We picked him up and could see that the staff was genuinely concerned for him. We were also informed there would be no charge for the service. Less than a week later the staff phoned to check up on him. Customer service like this is very rare and very much appreciated. The compassion shown makes us want to continue coming here as well as refer others. We will continue to come here not just for our dog but for the fish we have. i HATE the grooming department here now with a passion. This happened a couple weeks ago but still. I get that accidents happen, dogs move around, sometimes they get snippy. I really do get it. The first time i came here she got clipped my accident on her ear. Again, i know accidents happen. The second time I came here my dogs fur wasnt even that long! They legit cut her 4 TIMES!!!! 4!!!! Not really a mart, more of a petworld! This is a great chain pet store in Gurnee. It's very well stocked. It features food and accesories for birds, fish (fresh water only), reptiles, cats and dogs, but no tack and equine anymore. In any case, in addition to the fish, birds, reptiles, small mammals, and a few cats in the back, they have a grooming service and a Banfield Pet Hospital all attached. They also have pet training on premises evenings and weekends. You can pretty much find anything you need here when it comes to food and accesories for dogs and cats, even the breed-specific specialty foods. The service is always good. There's a happy pet vibe in the place, too. Multiple customers bring their doggies in. They even have accident stations at the end of the aisles to clean up after Fido embarasses you in front of your neighbors. My only beef about the place is that prices are very high here. Just about anything you find here you can get online at signficant discounts. Keep that in mind. Otherwise, I find no reason to go anywhere else ever since I stopped raising reef fish and my aardvark died. read more

I have been taking my almost 4 year old 32 pound dog (and my other dogs for the last 10 years) to the grooming salon since she was a pup to have her nails trimmed. I took her in today for a nail trim, the girl that checked me in just not friendly she took my dog just didn't like pet my dog or anything just put their lead on and walked away. When she was finished I went in and they tried to tell me that next time I need to go to my vet and get a sedative to give her before her next trim because she is hyper and she "claimed" she nipped at her. I know my dog is hyper (I told them that when I checked in) but never has she nipped at anyone the worst was when I went to put my own leash on her she flinched!!! She has never did that before. Needless to say I will never go back because I will not sedate my dog to get her nails trimmed. I will just take her to her vet which has never been a issue. I usually have them do it when I am there and PetSmart in between. They claimed their policy have changed, not sure what changed other than employees don't show the animals that they can trust them. This store has a hair grooming station, adoption center and an Animal clinic. I only came here to buy an elevated tray and some dog food..Since i dont make decisions for my dog(i dont live with my mom anymore)I dont get to get my baby(cocker spaniel "CS") any of the Organic dog food that i love so much.. My mom says that it makes Feegee(my CS) go to the bathroom excessively and since im the one hardly ever cleaning up after her i dont get a say in what type of food to buy her...anyway so my approch was to purchase comercialized Iams and get my tray and split. People seem to know when you're lost and confused looking for anything in the store, and i was approched by a representative selling Bil Jac foods.I was given five dollar off for the food and a sample bag for my baby to try to see if she liked it.They also had money back guarentee if your dog didnt like the food.. End result was that i purchased the food and the elevated food tray and got out of there as fast as possible without spending another dollar. I got yelled at of course when i got home for paying so much ($20 ) for the food tray and scolded till my ears fell off for getting expensive dog food that nobody in my entire family had ever heard of (they dont advertise on Tv like the other brands).. They were probaly thinking had i been duped into buying some generic dog food that just came on the market and this guy (the rep)really found a good fool to make his sale to.. The store itself is great and well stocked. My review is more about the grooming section. I've taken my dog here a couple of times. Once they burned his muzzle with the clippers and the cut wasn't right. I decided to give them a second chance. I know my dog better than anyone and I have bathed him on numerous occasions so I made sure to request that he be allowed out to go to the bathroom after the bath. Hes very well trained however without a little relief after a bath he wont sit still, he squirms and moves around and is a general pain. If taken out he sits well and quietly while all work is done. The woman who said she would be the one grooming him assured me she would take him out. After waiting 3 hours beyond the time he should have been done I went to pick him up hoping they just forgot to call. Well he wasn't done, seems he needed a break from the table and a different woman was grooming him, why I still don't know. I asked about the problem then asked if he was taken out like I requested and she informed me it was against company policy to take them outside the building. I still don't know why the first groomer assured me it would occur. I was informed that for an extra $11 I could have him expressed groomed which meant he would not have to wait in the crate while other dogs were done. I brought my puppy here twice to get groomed. My parents live in Gurnee so it's convenient for me to take my dog to get groomed while we pay them a visit. Gizmo's first visit was just a puppy trim. Around the face and he paws. His hair was still too long so we took him back this weekend about a month after his first puppy trim. Gizmo got his first "real" haircut on Saturday. The groomer explained to me that puppies need to get used to the clippers and if Gizmo didn't cooperate, they couldn't groom him. They want dogs to see that grooming is a positive experience. Well, Gizmo did really well because he came out with a new "summer" cut and is ready for the warm weather. They did such a great job and the price is right too. I have been getting quotes around the city and some places are higher than what I pay for a haircut! I will continue to take Giz to the suburbs to get groomed. I kill two birds with one stone by getting him groomed and visiting my family. Everyone wins! read more

My son and his wife both teach in the private school setting where they don't make a lot of money. So, my wife and I agreed to pay to have their 2 male kittens neutered. My son did the leg-work receiving a quote for around $400 from Petsmart, Gurnee, Il. When my son and daughter-in-law dropped off their kittens, they were told that the costs for the procedures and all that goes with it would be over $800. When confronted about the increase, the staff included a battery of unneeded shots and meds that were not part of the quote. Classic tactic to get the customer in the door and move the goalposts, so to speak. When I called to inquire as to the reasons for the 100% increase in costs, the employee (I assume the "doctor"), was impolite and obviously lacked customer relation training. Folks, please seek a reputable Vet, preferably an independent. My son learned a valuable lesson AND due to his persistence, was able to lower the bill by rejecting unneeded shots. They called to tell me my pet was ready... and "OH BY THE WAY, your dog had fleas. So we gave her a flea treatment. We know she had fleas because when we put her in a bath, there were fleas floating around. And you may want to check your house." Here's the thing... my dog did not have fleas. She has never had fleas. My home has no fleas. I COMB her CONSTANTLY because she gets matted easily. So yah, I'd KNOW if she had fleas. After expressing this to them, I received the whole rant about how they santize everything so it can't possibly be them. Or the other possible scenario they conveyed is that my pet may have picked up fleas on the way into the store. But how can that be? I carried her in!! So anyway... to tell me that they gave her a flea treatment because she had fleas, left me absolutely disappointed in this place. This is one of the best pet supplies stores in the metro Chicagoland region. a) Parking - it's a breeze since they have a massive private lot. Plus there's a bit of greenery in the parking islands so that if you bring your furry friend and it needs to relieve itself, it does have a bit of grass it can use. (Now if you do allow your pet to go potty, please pick up after them - it's disgusting seeing piles everywhere as if there are horses about. And there shouldn't be any horses roaming south of Hunt Club Road) b) Product selection & Pricing - anything you possibly need to take care of your dog/cat or anything in between can be found here, or on its website, which ships lightning fast. Plus prices are extremely competitive - other area stores tend to be quite high or do not have as deep an assortment of products to select from. Mini gripe would be that the online prices for clearance/sale items are often much cheaper than what is displayed in the store - but that's the caveat all retailers enforce (i.e. retail prices may vary) c) Customer Service - their cashiers are always quick and efficient, and if you should need assistance, I've always found their people (normally high school / college kids) to be happy to help or knowledgeable enough to answer the question on their own. A big pet peeve is super slow cashiers and having to wait forever on lines that just don't move. No matter how many people are lined up, I always seem to get through to the till in a reasonably short amount of time. Now if only Toys R Us could replicate this ... but that's another review for another store on another day. d) Training - there are always loads of young dogs in the store - getting trained/socialized. You can see from the enthusiasm of the pet trainers that they love animals and enjoy what they do - in this economy, it's kind of a luxury to be able to do what you love and having had a couple of friends and family who have gone to this location to get their dogs puppy-trained, I can vouch that their instruction and training style are indeed effective. e) Store Location & Condition - the store is generally clean (there are the occasional spots where dogs have relieved themselves) and well-lit. Sometimes, you go into some pet stores and you're just overwhelmed by the smell of ammonia and you feel like taking a shower immediately after leaving. I don't get the heebie jeebies visiting this locale, and it's so conveniently located (plaza just south of Gurnee Mills and it has its own turn lanes which you can access via hunt club) f) Selection of Organic / Natural products - perhaps the creme de la creme about this PetSmart is that it carries a vast selection of all-natural products (including brands that make Made in the USA products) at extremely fair prices. Our furry ones are like family and we're trying to incorporate healthier treats and food into their diet -- PetSmart makes it possible without gouging our wallets. read more

Exact number of stars earned as I was going to award. Place is great. Clean. Organized by pet and staff seams very adequate to help with your needs. They carry all the brands we need for our pets. We have a dog, cat and freshwater fish. We can almost always get what we came in for. While they have the brands we want, their prices are not all that great. I would think that a national chain has "buying power" that would allow better pricing. Honestly, I can go to 3 other stores in the area and get the brand we want for $1-$2 cheaper. On checkout they ask to scan your frequent shopper card. I always check my receipt and do not understand their use of a frequent shopper card. It has no cost saving benefit. I do enjoy each visit I have because of the animal nurturing environment but that is the only thing that makes Petsmart a standout. Again, if you are using a frequent shopper card for your purpose of gathering shopper habits and spending trends you are going to lose our business. We can go,to Wal-mart just across the street and spend, with the items we buy, about $5-$6 less and get other shopping done in the process. The only other issue I have is their freshwater fish. I understand the cost of filtering tanks individually and that it is just unfeasible to do so for what your market offers. But, seeing dead fish or white spots on the fish make me hesitant to buy any at Petsmart. A women working here with teal blue hair got super offended while working the cash register bc the women in front of me was being super sweet to her calling her "dear" and she hated it. She said she doesn't like to be talked down to like she's a child or something... like she doesn't like being talked to like that I guess. I tried to joke around with her and say oh you don't like when people call you boo and she yelled at me to leave the store I thought she was playing but she was serious! she literally put her hand up and told me to leave! I had to ask her if she was serious and this lady said "yes, I pushed her buttons and she wears her heart on her sleeve" like wtf does that have to do with why you yelled at me and treated me so rude just bc I was trying to be nice And ease the situation. Stopped in to pick up a bag of Blue Buffalo dog food to hold us over until our next shipment came in. The place is nice and all. It's clean and the employees were nice. The turnoff are the sales people who come up to you while you're shopping. I'd feel far more comfortable if a PetSmart person walked me through everything. read more

The Walmart of pet stores in that it is a huge warehouse type of place. The prices maybe lower than the locals pet shops but the service is lacking. As a pet store just for purchasing items like toys, pet food, and aquarium items (fish and reptiles) it is great as they have a big selection and fairly cheap. I would never buy a dog or cat here or use their other services as I would go to a specialist for that. They go through to many new employees to be trusted for animal care. read more

We took our 2 year-old Golden mix here to get groomed yesterday. My husband noticed a groomer yelling at a dog in the background and found it odd that she was comfortable doing that in front of customers. Since she wasn't the one grooming our dog, he still checked ours in to be groomed. What a mistake. He came home lethargic, and our assumption was he was tired as he was there for 5 hours and is excitable. By night time, we were concerned something was wrong as he was still not his active self, but figured we would see how he was in the morning. Today, he hasn't been able to go up or down stairs without the help of my husband. My husband had to carry him outside to pee this morning and our dog has hardly moved today other than in an attempt to follow us. You can tell that his hind quarters are in pain as his back legs are shaky and he is having trouble sitting and standing. I feel so awful for him. He has a vet appointment tomorrow, and my hope is that whatever injury this is, is something that will heal on its own. I spoke to the groomer, who said that our dog was tough to manage, but denied any injuries. I spoke to Petsmart manager and was "assured" that there was no mistreatment of our dog, but our dog has had no activity or unusual movement since being at the groomer. I also doubt the manager watches while every dog is groomed. While I'm sure they will continue to deny any fault, there's no doubt in our minds that they injured our dog. Our fear is that he was punished because of his playful, probably uncooperative behavior. We will never go back, and my hope is that you'll take this warning and not bring your pup here either. read more

I made an appointment one week ago yesterday 4/3/22 at this store to have them groom my dog in which I was told when I called to double check of the time it was supposed to be today (04/11/22) that there was no such appointment and nor is there anything scheduled for my dog in the future. I sad that's crazy I take the day off which costs me around $275-$300 and then the manager says unfortunately we cannot fit you in today without even asking the grooming staff is they can squeeze it in. No take another day off and it's on them next grooming. What happened to making the customer happy spontaneously and quickly to make them forget it happened and they are so pleased you rectified it and they don't loose time. This is the most valuable thing on this planet and I don't need to burn it with incompetent staff at PETSMART. They have convinced me it takes less time and money to do it myself and I won't be putting my dog around possible sick dogs. A few years back there was a puppy that died on their watch so. Have always been skeptical about leaving my dog there. Besides their prices are getting outrageous for the quality of work you get when they do actually write down your appointment when you call. I'm done with giving them my money. Maybe Amazon can groom my dog? I know Amazon will get any product I used to buy at PETSMART. Can I give them a half a star? read more
