During the 2 hours they worked, they were efficient and did not waste time. Because they charge by the hour ($165 per hour), this is important. The techs found an error in how the AC unit was installed, and they were able to fix it that day. Their fix prevented a big problem of water leaking into my ceiling. Also, when I reviewed the work order, I do not think I was over-charged for the parts they needed to fix my unit; the prices I was charged for the PVC parts seemed reasonable. The CONS: I was never told when I booked the appointment (as a new client) that they charge the travel time from when the tech leaves the previous job and drives to my house. As a result, I was charged $82.50 (30 min) for the tech to drive to my house from the previous job. This is an excessive charge. I understand that gasoline costs money, but to charge $165 per hour for travel time is too much. If they charged something like $30 per hour for travel time, that would be reasonable, and I would be leaving a 5 star review.

He went on to say that our boiler would need to be replaced fairly soon, showing me pictures of rust. He provided a quote for boiler replacement. I called two other HVAC companies, including Ocean State Air Solutions. Joe DeSilva and his very knowledgeable partner, Chris, came to my home to take a look at the boiler. Chris was patient in describing the functionality of the various components of our system. He went on to say that our boiler was a cast-iron boiler in good shape and should last for many more years. He said selling me a new one would be dishonest. These two gentlemen were honest, forthright, and patient with me, who has zero knowledge of boilers. So, I am cancelling my contract with my current HVAC service provider and going with Joe and Chris from Ocean State Air Systems because Trust matters to me.

We requested clarification on several items, including the length of copper piping quoted, which was not listed anywhere on the estimate. The company responded that they do not disclose cost per length, but that was not what we asked. As customers, we are entitled to know exactly what we are being charged for, yet no additional information was provided. The estimate remained vague and generic, offering no transparency or detail. Because of this lack of clarity and unwillingness to provide basic information about their own quote, we chose not to move forward with this company.

Buying a mini-split system is an incredibly difficult process. The Mass Save rebate system is very…read moredifficult to navigate. I got quotes and presentations from 4 different vendors and the pitch and price was exactly the same - hour long presentation and a $30k cost. However, what each vendor tells you is that IF you qualify a $10k rebate is available and your net cost is $20k. Essentially the rebate is a scam - it just gives contractors the ability to inflate the prices and use the rebate to make the system sound cheaper than it really is. I finally met with McIver and he was able to simplify the entire process. He is not a Mass Save contractor. So he does not work the rebate, just offers a strait-up cost to install the system. When he gave me his quote, I quickly figured out that Dan McIver was an honest man and that the whole Mass Rebate program was a scam. His quote with the similar equipment and the same number of mini-splits was $13,500. I hired him for the job and they started within a week. One of my biggest concerns was esthetics - I was worried about too many refrigeration lines running around the outside of the house. Our house is a rental property in Cape Cod that had a lot of charm to it and we did not want to ruin the integrity of it. Dan came up with a brilliant solution and was able to run most of the lines through the basement to minimize the lines on the outside of the house - we were so pleased with this solution. His team did a fantastic job building out the system - they were clean and finished the project on the timeline he quoted. The work was high quality!! Net is that Dan took a very complicated buying process and made it simple and affordable. He is highly recommended for the quality of his work, pricing and his honest and straightforward approach!
