Through training, Ginny now understands leash pressure and to sit when she reaches the end of the leash line.
    Justine N.

I wrote this same review on Google, but I wanted to share here as well. Apologies in advance for the length, but knowing the full story is important. I own a young (a year and some months) female French bulldog/Boston terrier mix that is prone to aggression towards both strangers and other dogs. I couldn't take Ginny anywhere where there was even a remote possibility she would be in close proximity to other people or dogs without fearing she would try to bite. Additionally, I had no options for dog sitters other than my folks (whom Ginny knew from puppyhood) because she would aggress towards everyone else - muzzled or not. So, forget hikes, dining out on a restaurant patio, walking through a park, or even going on overnight/multi-day trips if my folks weren't available. Needless to say, it was a very stressful situation. On top of which, it was one where I was continuously questioning where I went wrong in Ginny's training, feeling like a terrible owner, embarrassed because she was behaving this way, and frustrated because I didn't know how to fix it. After a ton of research to find the best fit, I came across Haley. She already had great reviews, reported extensive experience, and certifications from credible organizations. She also had some of the most reasonable prices (for the services I needed), and I could tell we would not be getting a cookie-cutter approach with Ginny's training. I figured if I was only going to have one shot at helping Ginny, my best bet would be placing my trust in Haley. Let me tell you that it was the absolute best decision I could have possibly made. Haley was thorough in her explanations of training techniques (and the "why" behind their use), patient, methodical, and straightforward - yet kind. Throughout my journey so far with Haley, I have learned so much and developed a stronger bond with Ginny. I finally had answers for my hundreds of questions, and, for once, hope that things could change. I'm not ashamed to admit I was brought to tears at the sight of Haley being able to pet Ginny without an aggressive reaction (AFTER ONLY 4 SESSIONS) - and realizing that she was the first stranger to be able to do that since I got her. I even get comments from my folks like, "Is this really the same dog?!" or "This would have been impossible 3 months ago!". I acknowledge that Ginny is still, and will likely always be, a work-in-progress - even post-training. But, Rome wasn't built in a day, and she's so much further along than I ever could have dreamed or expected in such a short period of time. If you want results, AND you are willing to put in the practice outside of training, you cannot go wrong with Haley. Trust the process, do the homework, and have faith in your canine companion. You may be just as surprised at the results you get! From the bottom of my heart - thank you, Haley & Petra K9! I don't know what I would've done without you!

I called Petra K9 over a year ago almost in tears as I was so overwhelmed with our German Shepherd/Dutch Shepherd cross Willa. Haley was so reassuring and professional as we started training. Haley gives confidence and calming direction. I now feel so much more confident and Willa is doing remarkable! Thank you so much Haley.

Thank goodness for Haley! I'm a new dog owner and Haley provides useful bite size information for me to digest and answers all questions I have about training. In our training session, Haley demonstrates the exercises and provides tidbits on how to do them correctly and more efficiently. I was wary of the mini educator, so Haley has the genius idea of me wearing the band to I become more consistent before putting it on my dog, Tony. This is my 4 or 5th session and each time, I learn something new. I went from feeling overwhelmed to starting to get the hang of things. Still have ways to go and appreciate Haley as our dog trainer. Today is the first time Tony let me hug him and is happy when I take him out by myself! 100% recommend Haley. Do yourself a favor and get Haley as your dog trainer

Koda in a down-stay position, not jumping for food like he used to!

My Border Collie/Great Pyrenees mix, Koda, is very high energy, but also very anxious. Working with Haley has not only given him a set of mental challenges perfect for his Border Collie side, but has given me so many tools to helping build his confidence and manage his anxiety. In a way, she has also helped me manage my own. I never knew where to start with training him, as he is my first big dog, but in just a few months I've learned so much; my relationship with Koda is stronger. In my research for a dog trainer, I find that many charge high rates for the same value of skills and learning tools that Haley has provided. Their teaching skills are also more harsh, which I didn't want for Koda or for myself. Haley is the perfect amount of firm, and she is very patient and understanding. She is encouraging, and she will celebrate all your wins, even if it seems small to you. You can tell she really cares about dogs and the teams that she works with, and it's that type of compassion that makes her such a wonderful dog trainer! Koda used to run away at the slightest noise, pull terribly on the leash, and could never sit still with distractions. We are three months in, and today he was in a down-stay position with a highly reactive dog across the street barking at him. He didn't even try to get up and remained patiently in that position until I gave him a break. With Haley's expertise and the consistency she motivates you to have, working with her has been absolutely worth it.

Haley is great at what she does! I never owned a dog before so I had no clue on how to start training my puppy but knew I had to get her trained asap. I stumbled across Petra K9 when researching trainers and saw that others had good experiences so I decided to take the chance and I'm so happy I did. She is patient and I love how she models what to do then has you practice. And i appreciate that she always takes the time to educate you so you can be the best pet owner for your dog. I can't thank her enough for helping me train my fur baby!

Our dog Piglet was a menace, she had lots of puppy energy and we did not know how to put her on the right path. Haley from Petra K9 was a life saver. She offered a payment plan to fit our needs, very responsive and most importantly, helped us with Piglet. Giving us the right tools and advice, after 4 sessions she is a completely different dog :)

Found Petra K9 on Instagram. What initially drew me here was her pittie. Have two large dogs myself it was a no brained. Her 'costumer' service has been excellent and she's always open to text/calls with concerns. Recently the vet complimented me on my rottie's behavior. I contribute this to Haley. We have been given the tools to set in place. We're only half way through training, looking forward to the rest.

First time at the beach after completing training

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Haley to anyone who needs help with their dog's behavior issues. My dog, Sky, was extremely reactive to dogs when we had first started training. He could not be within 20 feet of another dog, his reactions were explosive (barking, lunging, pulling to the end of the leash/choking). I felt extreme anxiety whenever I walked him outside, fearing we would run into other dogs and set him off. With humans, he was more okay within 5 feet as long as they didn't make sudden quick moves or try to pet him. Haley's calm energy put me at ease from the first meeting. Her training methods helped me learn to communicate better with Sky and gave me the tools necessary to manage his reactions when we run into a potential trigger. After 6 weekly sessions working with various distractions, he is now able to pass by another dog at a park with only minimal whines or a couple barks and I'm able to get his attention back to me a lot easier. My goal is to be able to bring Sky with me everywhere eventually, and while we still have some ways to go, I definitely feel more confident handling him on walks now after working with Haley.

We are not new dog owners and with our previous dog, we lived the best life - traveling across US and Canada, flying on planes, staying in hotels, dining at Michelin star restaurants, going to work at the office, walking off leash, etc - with zero professional training. He actually was a puppy school drop out! We learned that all dogs are different and with our new pups, we needed help on dealing with behavioral issues like reactivity. Through positive reinforcement, Amy coached us on how to loose leash walk our dogs in heel position. She also showed us how to do "place" work, use spatial pressure and how to get our dogs to focus on us around distractions. We also learned how to turn up our praising game verbally and with treats! Trainings were mainly at Butcher Park which is a very high pressure environment given the amount of dogs at any given time. It really put us to the test and honestly, we were challenged! It's hard work. We had homework after each lesson, but we committed to practicing in between lessons. We weren't perfect but we always showed up ready to learn, and to give and receive feedback each time with the goal of growing and improving. We ended up doing "board and train" for both of our dogs (one at a time) and we couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome. We needed a jumpstart and Amy gave us the knowledge and tools to set us up for how we want to live our lives with our French bulldogs. She truly loves dogs and wants the best for them and their owners. We highly recommend Amy!

I have decades of experience fostering dogs and personally adopting many of my own, and over the years I've worked with a wide range of trainers. Without question, Steve is in a league entirely of his own. His talent, intuition, and depth of understanding when it comes to dogs is extraordinary. He doesn't just train dogs; he teaches humans how to truly understand them. What made the experience even more unforgettable was the joy he brought into the day. We laughed constantly. At one point my cheeks genuinely hurt from hours of smiling and laughter. And yet, amid all of that warmth and humor, we walked away with an incredibly clear, grounded, and practical understanding of his methods and a deep sense of confidence in our ability to apply them. Steve's approach is refreshingly doable: just five minutes of training per day, paired with his ongoing availability as a resource. That combination alone feels invaluable. We literally just completed our training day today, so I plan to update this review in a few months with more detail about long-term ease of execution and results with our dog, Griffin. But one thing I feel compelled to share now is this: throughout the entire day, even while Griffin was dramatically protesting (vocally, and with flair), Steve remained calm, steady, and completely unfazed. Griffin didn't love everything he was being asked to do, but he clearly adored Steve. He never cowered, never shut down, never showed fear. That level of trust speaks volumes. At one point, I asked Steve about scheduling an additional training day for one of our other dogs. His response was thoughtful, sensible, and deeply ethical: he told me it wouldn't be necessary. He explained that the principles I was learning with Griffin would absolutely apply to our other dogs as well, and that he'd be more than happy to answer questions along the way. That moment really matters to me because it so clearly reflects that Steve is driven by genuine passion and care for people and dogs, not by squeezing every possible dollar out of his clients. I also want to wholeheartedly acknowledge Tasha, who was incredibly kind, responsive, and compassionate throughout the scheduling process. We had to cancel our original training day due to a traumatic injury our other dog, Enzo, sustained: a spinal stroke. Tasha immediately offered to refund our deposit without hesitation. When I shared that I still very much wanted to work with Steve, she later went out of her way to find us an earlier date than originally offered after I asked to be notified of any cancellations. That level of care and humanity meant so much during a really difficult time. I am profoundly grateful for Steve and his entire team. This was one of the most positive, affirming, and empowering experiences I've ever had as a dog guardian. If you're looking for the best, congratulations. We found Mike on Yelp, and honestly, we were just looking for a miracle. He balances that "tell-it-like-it-is" energy with a sense of humor that kept us from losing our minds. The Transformation Timeline: * The Private Lesson Phase (8 Sessions): We went from "we can't leave the house" to "wait, is he actually sitting on command?" By the end of our eight private lessons, we were taking regular walks. But Mike's group lessons are shockingly amazing. Seeing my dog hold a "down" in a row of 10 dogs while each one weaves through the line? It's practically a glitch in the Matrix. They're easy to train, but that was the issue. He would ignore our commands because he wouldn't feel like doing it. We asked Ryan to focus on three areas: recall, drop it, and going off-leash. We would spend 15-20 minutes chasing after him after he'd bolt out the front door. He thought it was a game. As you know, running out to the street can be dangerous. 'Drop it' rarely worked. He would have everything in his mouth - sticks, trash, balls - you name it. Sometimes, he'd have things that aren't edible in his mouth. And frankly, we never trusted him off-leash, that was asking for it. Everything was resolved when we brought our pup home. We were so proud of him! His recall was better, he never bolts out of the front door, and with that, we trusted him off leash (only in confined areas, of course). We're super grateful for Ryan and the SMS team. Now it's on us to continue with the training! One more thing to add: our pup had perpetuating issues with digestion/stool and paw and ear infections. It was the worst! We tried everything and spent so much money. Ryan suggested that we transition to a raw diet and we haven't had an episode since. I'm so thankful for that too!

My husband and I have 5 dogs. At the time we put 4 through…read morethe program because we did not have the 5th one. My oldest dog is 12 years old with no training. I soon got 2 more dachshunds and then a German Shepherd. Being that the 3 dachshunds had no training, we knew it was irresponsible on our part to have a bigger dog that was untrained. When I dropped off my first two (German Shepherd 6 mo. & dachshund 1 yr) I told Ryan, good luck! LOL They are very energetic since they are puppies and the GS was already taking in bad habits from the little ones. Always barking, was getting on top of our counters, very reactive. Typical dog stuff. After a couple days we received videos of them walking by other dogs and no barking! I was witnessing a miracle! After 2 weeks we got them back and we saw a MAJOR IMPROVEMENT. Dogs are dogs, so of course they are still a little reactive and bark, but it's much much much MUCH EASIER to stop it! No more haggling. I say quiet and they're quiet! Especially with as many dogs as we have, we had no idea how to train them all at once. Then they took in the other two dachshunds. The 12 year old and the 5 year old who are the most spoiled. To my surprise they were very disciplined the first couple of days! The little ones always pulled on the leash and was starting to hurt my shoulder. Not anymore!! They all walk beside me with no tugging. So now my husband walks the GS while I walk the 3 dachshunds. And yes they are actually pretty good at walking all together. IT IS POSSIBLE! Now that we have another puppy, a GSD Shar Pei mix, we have him into training too. Since the other dogs are into their routine, he falls into place. We also got him a place mat, and an ecollar. Not only does this program know how to train your dog, they are also very passionate and loving about it. You can tell they love your dog like it was their own. They are also very knowledgeable about the raw food diet. I highly suggest talking to them about it. I want to say a huge thank you to Jaden and Sam too who helped make this possible! Also, being that this is basically a franchise for dog training, it was a HUGE PLUS for being in a military family. Training is every week for the lifetime of the dog, so your dog can interact with other dogs that have been through the same program. My husband and I are moving across the country due to military orders, and we don't have to worry about the dogs not socializing with other trained dogs. They have someone out there too! I hope they are just as great as Ryan, Sam, and Jaden! We are truly going to miss this little family!
