TLDR: Life-changing dog training for my two reactive dogs. Massive improvement in our dogs' behavior and our confidence in walking them. Brent is an awesome dog trainer. This has been a life changing training for my two dogs. Our first day of level 1 class, they were barking and freaking out at the sight of other dogs. By the end of level 2, they were non-reactive, and I can now have my dog heel without holding a leash. Brent noticed how reactive our dogs were and took the extra time to walk us through training them to improve their behavior around other dogs as well as one of our dog's fear of water hoses. Highly recommend his group training classes. Its a lot of work, but you should feel comfortable & in control of your dogs. Thats what the classes have provided us and more. If someone told us 10 weeks ago that our dogs would be able to lay down with other dogs and be mellow, I would've never believed them until coming to Cooperhaus. I adopted a 1.5-year-old shepherd mix. He was a handful (to say the least), and I worried my arm would rip off at my shoulder with his strength and poor leash manners. I needed help yesterday. He was a good dog who had the potential to be excellent. Cooperhaus obedience training saved our friendship and gave us the skills to be free to walk/hike anywhere and vacation anywhere. Riding in the car is also peaceful (now)! We started with a private lesson with Sky (who is an awesome dog trainer and human teacher!). Not only did this show me that my new pup is a good dog who needs my guidance, but it was also the perfect first step in the growth and connection I needed with this adolescent dog. It was worth every cent. *The private lesson before group lessons started provided an advantage as a foundation that launched us into a great position, making the first course of obedience training a successful reinforcement of basic, critical skills for a great dog to succeed. We attended group classes (nearly) every Saturday for 3.5 months. It took time, consistency, and more consistency. Then voila! I have the dog of my dreams! He has excellent recall and heeling off leash, from dog park to hiking. My dog now knows how to say hi to other dogs (no more Shepherd barking and lunging!), and will stand patiently by my side away from a situation if a scuffle breaks out at the park. Last year, I started with another trainer seeking someone who could help with our reactive corgi towards other dogs but there were no changes. As he continued to growl and bark at other dogs, we were grateful to have found Brent a couple of months later! Our last trainer never brought up the idea of using an e-collar so all we knew was correcting his reactivity with the prong collar. Admittedly, I was hesitant. However, after 1 session there was a huge difference and I saw an immediate change in his behavior. I did a lot of research after and have learned to properly use it. Such an amazing training course. My German shepherd was able to catch on quickly with their guidance and was already doing great with heel, sit, down, up, and some agility. He's doing recall decently but I apparently have the good problem where my dog won't leave me. They recommend prong collars in the early trainings and have courses for e-collars but you don't need to use either to do the training levels. read more

We highly recommend Cooperhaus!  They are a 10 in our book. Cooperhaus provides training from basic obedience and agility, to protection and severe behavioral issues. No dog is too difficult.   Through a recommendation we found Cooperhaus and Brent Cooper.  Brent is a second generation trainer, with 30 yrs. experience. He is extremely professional, competent, patient and a great listener.  We discussed our issues regarding our 4 year-old Aussie rescue and he immediately focused on a training program to remedy our problem. We couldn't have asked for a sweeter dog at home but out in public it was completely different.  Our Aussie had reaction problems with anything that would move: UPS and Postal trucks, skateboards, scooters and other dogs on the street. Very much leash reactive.  Dutch also suffered from separation anxiety for which we did try different anti-anxiety drugs, without success. Brent Cooperhaus totally trained my sisters dog Brodie. He is a changed dog He is much calmer and much more obedient. He was there in Brents care fore about 30 days. When my sister picked Brodie up he was a different dog. He used to jump all over you and would pee on everything. He would chew on everything as well. They had a hard time taking him for walks because he would pull you throughout the walk. When they got him back from Brent, they we're able to take him for a walk with out him pulling them on the leash. Before they dropped him off with Brent he was strictly and outside dog because he would chew up everything and jump on everything. Now he is able to come into the house without destroying it. *My boarding experience specific to my situation* Background information: I have a 3 year old siberian husky. Still in her high-energy phase. I have to take her out once or twice a day for exercise, and I'm not talking about little 15 minute walks. We walk for an hour, go to the dog park, she runs on bike for 1 or 2 miles 2-3 times a week, we train her to the extent of how much huskies will want to listen. It is a priority for me to exercise/stimulate her everyday. My dog has come here on a few times not consistently, just when we needed a day off or couldn't take her out of town with us and the first couple times were great. We were able to speak to the trainer that worked by the kennels and he told us she did great with other dogs, with specifics and said she is in the good temperament dog group so she was able to play all day. Fast forward to about a month ago when we took her back and they said she did not play because she "bum-rushed the gate". The co-owner told us his concerns, I'm like okay, as a professional he probably knows something I don't and I'm not gonna try to argue even though I did a little bit. I just picked her up from a 2 night boarding and I asked the lady what did she do there, and they said "They kept her with a small group and she got bored so we put her back in her kennel." I said she's played there before and they said they didn't put her in the big group because they don't want to overstimulate her on her "first day back". Not once did I ever hear they tried to put her in the big group to see how she would do. Just their reasonings on why they didn't want to bring her in with the big group. I even called once to ask how she's doing and the guy said she's with a small group because she's reactive, and I'm like reactive how? And he's like not in a negative/aggressive way but she's excited so we're going to keep her in a small group. Ok... she doesn't have any aggression issues so I don't understand. I get that they might think she plays rough but it seemed like they didn't give her a chance to evaluate how she actually does with a big group. The last two times I picked her up was really stressful because she had so much energy she did not burn off. We get home and I have to spend 1-2 hours getting her energy out. Which is inconvenient when you come home from a trip and have other stuff to do. They have their reasons on why they didn't want her to play. And at the end of the day she is my dog and I am responsible for her and they did what I paid them to do which is feed and shelter her for the time needed. I cannot expect them to exercise her in the way I would like. But I really cannot understand their reason on why she couldn't play even though my dog gets along well with other dogs, and has played there before. My recent experiences with them have just not been compatible with my dog and I cannot hold that against them but I am disappointed considering she did perfectly fine her first couple times there. read more

By the time I went to Cooperhaus to train my pup, she was an 18 month old, 86 pound, female german shepherd that was in complete control of my life. I had many trainers separate her from the classes with fences or distance from the other dogs. I even had one trainer tell me that I didn't have a problem after one session. I felt that the trainers wanted to avoid her or tell me I was making up a problem that didn't exist. I have a 12 year old, 110 pound, lab/shepherd/malamute mix dog. He was never socialized with people and basically spent the first four years of his life in the back yard or around my family. I adjusted my life to accommodate his lack of ability to be around strangers for 12 years. I decided that I would not do that for the next decade with the newest pup. My concerns were taken seriously from that first training session at Cooperhaus. By the second training session, Dakota had gotten into a fight with my brother's dog on top of my lap and I had gotten hurt. After Brent explained why she was behaving this way and what I needed to do, I trusted that he knew what needed to be done to correct the problem I had created. It was the most difficult thing to do, but after picking her up a month later she was a changed dog. I have learned how to be in control of her in situations where I wasn't in the past. I have also asked for advice with certain situations at home, and implementing Brent's advice has always resulted in correcting the behavior. I love this place. It's a trek for me, because I live on the peninsula and take the evening group classes, but it is so worth it! My scary looking gsd is very obedient, calm, can stay put wherever I put him like no ones business. As a result, he gets praised for being "such a well trained dog" everywhere we go (mall, restaurants, school, parks, etc) even though he is only 5 months old. We've only taken the beginning class and are just now doing intermediate, but I can say that the trainers know what they're doing, they are engaging, and they know about dogs. The classes here are 1000 times better than those pet store dog obedience classes. The only thing I will say is that treat based methods may work better on some dogs. read more

We tried a treat based training class, at our local shelter, for our Formosa/Bone Mouth Sharpei mix and I came home in tears. The teacher told me he was "wild." She implied that I would always need treats, he would not have any affinity with us when he was outside and at a level 10 of distraction and that I had too many expectations. He barked and lunged and was basically manic. Our doggie adoption agency recommended Cooperhaus but we didn't want to go because it was an hour drive from our house and we really did not want to use a prong collar. BUT after the treat based class the whole family trundled down there with our dog. Brent Cooper was the total opposite of the first trainer. HE had high expectations of our dog and was totally encouraging with us and the dog in order to reach them. This is no beginner labrador we are talking about. This little Formosa is an ADVANCED dog! After just 2 months of classes at Cooperhaus we have a dog who is completely changed. Of course he still needs work, and we are doing that work. But he went from insanely afraid walking near BART, to able to do a down stay (with me at a distance) while the train goes by over his head. I would highly recommend Cooperhaus! read more

They excell at all aspects of training, from basic handling and obedience to advanced protection and nose work. We have 4 GSD, and the training we have received at CooperhausK9 has enabled us to have 4 very well behaved and obedient dogs that are a pleasure to take out in public. We took two in for obedience training, going through the course from basic to advanced III. The Cooperhaus method is about training the handler as much as the dog. With the skills and knowledge we got with the first two we could successfully train the second two on our own, consulting with Brent and his staff for problem areas. We have two dogs currently in protection training, and really this is the fun part of training. The same idea of training the handler applies here as well as giving the dog the proper direction for their natural behavior. All in all, I cannot recommend Cooperhaus enough for any and all breeds of dog. No matter what your goal is for your dog, Cooperhaus has the people and gear to get you and your dog there. read more

We adopted a very leash reactive 7 year old Australian Shepherd last June, and took him to his first class at Cooperhaus in August. After completing two classes (10 sessions), and practicing what we learned in terms of correcting leash aggression towards passersby, bikes, and other dogs on leash, he now only reacts about 20% of the time compared with 80-100% of the time on walks. Mission accomplished! I am leaving out one star because I don't think this method of dog training is right for all dogs. We also took our 1 year old German Shepherd mix breed puppy to the same classes as the older dog, but he did not respond well to a non treat based training method. He's in a new treat based class with AKC and is doing great. read more

I had no idea how well a dog could be trained until I went to Cooperhaus. Brent and his team are excellent. Their courses are well-designed, and I particularly like the fact that Brent takes advantage of the other dogs in the course to provide a distraction for my dog while I'm putting him through his paces. It's one thing for my dog to be able to come when I call him while he's bored, but really impressive that he'll now do so even while he's playing with other dogs. I was also impressed with the amount of knowledge Brent and his team have. I'm the type of guy who likes to ask questions, who wants to know why we're doing a particular task a particular way before I do it. Brent is always able to explain why a technique or exercise is important, and that helps me to do train my pup more effectively. Finally, I really like Brent's philosophy about corrections and rewards. Yes, my dog wears a prong collar and yes, I use it to correct him when he doesn't do what I ask. But Brent seems to believe that training is supposed to be fun, and that dogs should get plenty of praise when they're doing things right. That philosophy really worked for my dog, and he seemed to enjoy training sessions every week. I highly recommend Cooperhaus - I'd never consider going anywhere else. read more

This review is about 2 years delayed.... we brought our Bailey to Brent at Cooperhaus 2 years ago for training. He was not as easy as our first dog, Bailey was, well, "strong willed" some might say. Brent was very detailed in his explanation of how they train dogs, each dog is different and Brent and his team are very knowledgeable. He worked with us and what we could afford to do and what would be the best way to approach it. We left Bailey with Cooperhaus for 2 weeks, Brent spent time with us when we picked him up in detail, what to do, what not to do.... Bailey was his same fun, friendly self, but, listened! Yes, LISTENED! We have to continue to work with him, he will push his boundaries when he can. I would recommend Brent and his team 100%! They know dogs! We continue to use Cooperhaus for boarding services, I've always had a good experience with Brent and his staff. I love that you can add training services to your dogs stay, brilliant! If you're looking for a "spa" for your little Fifi, this might not be the best place for you, however, if you want your dog to be looked after, well taken care of and exhausted when you return, this is your place! read more
