It was not busy at all just one more table perhaps. When ordered food, first the vegan noodles came after about 10-15 minutes. About 10-15 minutes later the vegan momos came. Two from our party had to leave as it was work time. We stayed back for a while and had to request to get the Tofu rice to go. The vegan Noodles and Vegan Tofu rice quantity was shockingly less. More like a small side dish. There is no way that an adult can consume just one - even two for me would not be enough. The taste - the noodles, the tofu rice were very mild and not properly seasoned as well. The momos were good, but the three sauces very disappointing. Normally a sauce would enhance the momos, but these actually were making the momos less tastier. Never going back.

Service was fast, and counter lady was also the cook so she was very helpful in describing the dishes The ambiance of the place is typical take out restaurant. There are about 4 tables that might seat 6 people each. This place is primarily a take away service. So seats are used mostly for waiting for your food. Bought a large for $25 plus tax Got 2 suppers and have enough leftover for another lunch. Definitely will be adding this into our take out rotation. Two thumbs up.

Well, I happened to be in the area running other errands and drove by it and lo and behold, they have a parking lot! It's shared with a few other businesses, but it's in front of their restaurant and it's free. Whoo hoo! I couldn't stop that day, but made a mental note to return. And return I did! A few days later I got some takeout for my husband and I. I walked in and was greeted right away. Staff there were super friendly. I asked if they had lunch specials (it was 1:30pm) and they did! It was $7 for either Creole chicken in sauce, fried chicken, or Griot fried pork. I got a fried chicken and a fried pork. They came with rice and beans, a piece of fried plantain, gravy and some pikliz (spicy coleslaw). It's the equivalent of a "medium" that they sell. They have large and x-large as well. The food was overall good, but a bit fatty/greasy for my liking. The plantain was too dry and hard for my tastes. The pork was good, although some pieces were really fatty, but I did appreciate that I got some lean pieces as well. The chicken was a thigh piece. It was good, but not all that flavourful. The rice was tasty, but a bit oily. I wonder if they have Djon-Djon, that mushroom rice, I forgot to ask, I do like it better than regular rice and beans. Maybe next time. The pikliz (spicy coleslaw) was excellent. It had a real spicy kick to it. I didn't care for the gravy as it looked like red oily broth. Food was served in styrofoam containers. I personally am not a huge fan of eating out of styrofoam for both health (chemicals leaching into the food) and environmental reasons. The lunch special is a good deal at $7 though.

Your choices are salads and sandwiches, you answer a couple of questions, and presto, a few minutes later, you have your order. The restaurant has two locations, the original one on Cadboro, which I've been to before, and this newer one on Wellington West. I feel that this location on Wellington West is a bit "hipper" and "cooler" yet more commercial. The Cadboro location, I found more like a family eatery and had more of a mom and pop feel. I got 2 tacos ($6.50 each), the barbacoa, and the chicken mole. My friend got 2 chicken quesadillas ($8 each). Both the tacos and quesadillas were really small, much smaller than I expected for the price. The barbacoa taco was pulled beef topped with onions and cilantro. The beef was tender and the seasonings were tasty. The chicken mole taco was topped with shredded lettuce, cheese and a white sauce. The mole sauce was sweet and had a strong chocolate flavour. The taco shells were corn tortillas and they give you double shells. I had to eat my tacos with a knife and fork because they fell apart when I tried to pick them up. My friend also had to eat her quesadillas with a knife and fork. Service was very pleasant. We got a glass bottle of water for our table. Our server checked up on us appropriately. Decor is very cool and colourful. Lots of Mexican items around. The restaurant in this space before Taqueria La Bonita was also a Mexican restaurant (the very short lived, La Cocina Loca), and the restaurant before that was also a Mexican restaurant (the second location for Ola Cocina, sadly it closed, but the original Ola Cocina in Vanier lives on). Prior to that it was Zazaza (a pizza place). I looked at their drinks menu and they have lots of creative and delicious sounding (and expensive) drinks. They have some sofa like chairs and the back of the restaurant has a more loungey feel. Overall I felt that the food was good, but too pricey for me, as I could have easily eaten 5-6 tacos and $30-$40 for a taco lunch is too spendy for me.

Plantain Cartel is sort of an extension of the Soca Kitchen (same company, same location) that serves plantain montaditos and patacones. I originally thought it was the Holland location, but it was actually the new Beechwood location that just opened up last month. I might be wrong, but I think everything under Plantain Cartel is only available for takeout or delivery. All of the plantain sandwiches are gluten-free. I got the pulled pork sandwich and the yuca fries. The sandwich had braised pulled pork, roasted ham, pickled onions, mustard, ketchup, garlic aioli, feta, and house pickled slaw in between two large, smashed and fried plantain slices. The plantain was salted and the edges were crunchy, but the middle less so. The pulled pork was tasty, especially with the pickled onions, garlic aioli, and pickled slaw. The sourness of the pickled veg really complemented the pork. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't be as crispy/crunchy by the time it got to me, and, unfortunately, I was right, but that didn't make it any less delicious. I'd like to try it again, but closer to the location, as it started to get even more difficult to eat about halfway through. Super messy and a five-finger, full hands kinda sandwich. Plan for lots of napkins! The yuca fries had a sweet sugar cane glaze and shaved Parmesan. It was sweet and salty and the flavour reminded me a bit of Filipino ensaymada, with the sugar and salty cheese on top. The flavour was good, but the yucca was sliced so thick that it wasn't crispy at all. The photo made it look like they were almost deep fried and crispy all over, but that wasn't the case. Still good, but I was craving the crispy texture, so I was a bit disappointed. I was tempted to also order the ceviche with plantain chips, and the Iberico ham-flavoured gourmet Spanish potato chips. Next time!
