Being from Kansas City. We have so many restaurant choices. While being in Atchison, we wanted a good meal. We found it a Pete's. We had the truffle fries as an appetizer. I had the 12 oz KC strip steak. Both were a good choice. The service was as good as the food. The restaurant has a flair from the past. With tin ceilings. Everyone I asked about where to eat mentioned Pete's Steakhouse. When I then asked what to get, they would mention anything but the steaks: the pasta ("I'm a pasta girl"), the pizza, the Greek salad, etc., which left me a little suspect. We went anyhow as I couldn't bear the thought of passing up on a 12 oz. Kansas City strip for $24, unfortunately it came with chimichurri sauce which is as ridiculous as it was thankfully fully scrapable. The place reminded me of a (slightly) upscale version of the classic Greek diner back on Long Island: comfortable booths, efficient service with photos and maps of Greece covering the walls. Disaster! I don't think this place will ever improve, but with the same owners/management then why would it? We had a waitress that was new and didn't know hardly anything about the menu, but I understand you have to start somewhere. We watched multiple people receive actual meals that sat down after we had already ordered, but yet we still hadn't received our appetizer of mozzarella sticks or side salad. We asked the waitress multiple times when the items were coming out and always got the answer it should be coming right out. Finally got them, but then had to wait forever on our actual order! We ordered a specialty pizza with no pepperoni and a steak throughly cooked with loaded baked potato along with veggies. I sat there and watched people that had arrived much later than we did eat their meals and leave while we were STILL waiting on our food! Our food FINALLY arrived only with multiple issues! The pizza was a hamburger/sausage, NOT a specialty without pepperoni. The baked potato along with the corn was cold. The steak was luke warm and TOUGH! It was so tough my father actually got choked on it! My dog at home had a hard time chewing it and she weighs over 150 pounds! I spoke to the owner/manager only for her to make all kinds of excuses for the problems. A new baked potato and corn was brought out that was hot. We received our specialty pizza WITH pepperoni on it! The pizza wasn't even warm!!! At this point I just gave up, no since of even saying anything else because it was the owner's way or the highway. I'll take the highway and just won't come back! The only thing taken off the bill was the 3 ice teas and I think that's just because the waitress forgot to put them on!! Complete nightmare! The staff was friendly. We were in town visiting so don't know where anything is and stumbled on Pete's. After getting a seat we promptly ordered and got our drinks. It took a good hour to get our food and when we did the mashed potatoes were a bit cold. They seemed to be instant potatoes (which I don't have an issue with) but they were incredibly dense and pasty due to not enough water. I had to take a drink after each bite. The gravy was also extremely thick. Wasn't my favorite food experience but the decor was cool and waitress was nice. Sorry I couldn't praise the food more. read more

I asked for a straw numerous times and had to get it myself. Then the salads came out and one person didn't get a salad. Forced to tip because of gratuity. Forgot multiple things that were asked for. we sat there for over an hour and when we got our food it was cold. The pasta and the Greek burger was cold, along with the fries. The gyro was tasty but the pita was burnt. Very sad to see something with so much potential go down hill since august. We waited at least 7 minutes for a hostess to acknowledge our presence. It was only AFTER we asked about seating were we acknowledged. We sat for at least 10 minutes before our waitress acknowledged us. Where is the training for us inter service? I don't care how great your food is! If you don't have customer service people will not return! Train your servers to carry out food when it is in the window OR hire a runner! Train your servers to acknowledge their tables whether they are able to wait on them or in a few minutes! Where were the refills? Need another drink? Very sad to see! read more

Pete's is a well kept secret by the Atchison community. This is reminiscent of Pete & Ted Shapiro's steak and pizza houses I grew up with in northern Missouri / south Iowa. Aside from the feels of being young that it gives and memories of weekend dinners with my parents, they also have excellent food and a great price, with a wide variety of appetizers, sandwiches, gyros, steaks, pizza & pasta. Ok... deceiving when view outside, but a great eatery. When asked at the hotel for recommendations for dinner, they didn't select this establishment... but they should of. The pasta/chicken entree was plate licking good, service was very attentive and friendly. The salad could of been in a more accommodating bowl but yes, finished it all. Not much in the way of good places to eat in Aitchison but this us one you should not pass by. read more

It took our waitress 12 minutes to get our drink order. we ordered the saganaki cheese and she lit it at the wrong table then told us it was because they had to share a lighter. My salad with my meal was wrong. I ordered the chicken parm, which had cinnamon in it and after I asked to confirm it was in it, I said I wasn't able to eat that and was still charged for it. we've been here lots of times but will not ever be back. read more

Pete's has really good pizza! The service great! And you could watch football games there too. A little dark but was good.

I am just traveling through town and normally don't take time out of my day to pan a restaurant, but Pete's isn't even good enough for students in this small college town. Throughout the towns and small cities of Kansas I've found many good steak dinners for less than $20. So I gave Pete's prime rib a try. Steak wasn't awful. It just didn't have much seasoning and was loaded with gristle. The side dishes were equivalent to Burger King. The only side vegetable was corn, heated up out of a can. A side salad was iceberg lettuce and virtually nothing else. The onion rings were frozen restaurant supply quick fried. They offer an extensive menu which I assume means that most everything is pre-prepared days before, or simply frozen from the grocery supplier. Waitress was attentive to a fault, six times asking if everything was good during the 20 minutes I was trying to down this barely adequate repast. Caveat emptor. This was our first time coming to the famous Pete's Steak House of Atchison, Kansas. The atmosphere and workers were all very welcoming. The prices for the dishes were pretty low for the amount of food you get. The reason why I cannot give 5 stars is due to the amount of time it took for my fiancé, two kids and I to get our food. Over an hour wait, with two kids that have nothing to do but sit there, they become very restless. Waiting that long for the food I would have imagined and was mentally preparing myself for one of the best dishes I've ever had. Sadly, that was not the case. Plain Jane was all it was. I had the Cajun Alfredo and it was great, super well seasoned but not overly salty. The Greek salad I got with my meal was good. Table service was friendly and casual, food service was a little slow but they did say they were understaffed. We were staying at the Holiday Inn Express and Pete's menu looked good so we ordered for take out. We really enjoyed the reuben pizza. It had some sauerkraut and for the sauce, thousand island dressing. If I got it again, I would ask for more sauerkraut. It was very good as is though...very cheesy. However, we all thought the meat tasted more like hamburger than corned beef. We also tried the rice balls which were tasty and in a pool of delicious sauce. We laughed at ourselves because we didn't read the menu well (confession: we were drinking). We ordered the bologna fries and thought we were going to get some fried bologne battered goodness but alas, they were as described on the menu...bolognese sauce over fries. Someone needs to create an appetizer that really is battered fried bologna!!! I would not order them again because the fries were meaty and soft...not bad but just sort of a glob of food.
