Bob ordered something from me, then backed out on the order after it had arrived, sticking me with the special order freight and the inventory to either return at my expense or try to sell to another customer. I've brought multiple cars here over the years and used to recommend this place without hesitation. I don't know what happened, but the service has gone downhill, and my last visit was the final straw. I approved a $200 repair. When I showed up to pay, I was blindsided with an additional $215 charge for a part that supposedly broke during the repair, no phone call, no heads-up, just a surprise at the register. I have no idea if it broke on its own or was damaged in the process, and that ambiguity is the problem. A shop with integrity calls you the moment something unexpected happens. Definitely a scam. I recently switched to another mechanic after repeated issues here, where it was revealed they had installed my breaks and wheels incorrectly. It's costing me over a thousand in damages to my vehicle to correct their mistakes. This is after paying Pete's well over $2000 in the first place. The mechanic was appalled at the shoddy work citing that there were just springs in random places, pieces hanging off not attached to anything, and that the incorrect installation had been actively deteriorating my vehicle. read more

Just had our vehicle in at Pete's last week. I broke down 4 blocks away. Figured it was the CV joint. It was. Called Pete's to see if they could pick it up. They use Bob's Towing. No problems what so ever with the transaction. They looked at the car the next day and determined that is was the CV joint. Was fixed one day later due to no parts in stock. I would have given them 5 stars but I felt the towing charge was a bit much. $75 to go 4 blocks? If I would have known I would have pushed it.... While the car was in the shop we got the oil changed as well. Very reasonable price for the oil change. We will most likely be back again and I would recommend Pete's to others looking for service. read more

My check engine light comes on, I'm 3 hours from home, it's 5° out, and it's 10 minutes to closing time at Pete's. They didn't really have to help me (a stranger) but Bob not only made sure the issue wasn't serious, he checked and inflated my tires. This is a stand up guy and operation. I have been a Pete's Auto customer for 18 years. I don't go anywhere else for my auto service needs. The folks at Pete's Auto provide excellent and honest service which explains why they've been in business for so long and without advertising. They use a standard mark up on parts as far as I can tell. They tell you the truth about your car. For example, I once went in expecting to have to replace my breaks because of a little squeaking. After their inspection, Bob at the counter said the breaks were worn but had six more months of reliable service: it was up to me. I waited. In this economy, it is good to squeeze out every bit of use out of a car. Pete's auto was more concerned about my making a good economic decision than they were about making a buck. Sure enough, six months later I was in for the repair when the issue became a little more concerning. Another time I needed breaks, they saved me money by offering the option of used replacement parts. The building and lobby are modest. I take this as another sign that they prefer to pass the savings on to their customers rather than spend money on the "externals". I got a new OEM exhaust system installed on my Toyota Sienna at the same time my brother-in-law needed the same for his Sienna in Milwaukee. My brother-in-law was shocked to hear that I got exhaust system installed for $500 less than his best price in Milwaukee. We've purchased two cars from Pete's Auto. The first gave us excellent performance for the seven years. The second we purchased from them this month because we like and trust their service. It may have taken them six weeks to repair Brian's PT Cruiser, but I can assure Brian that the people at Pete's Auto never lied to him. They provided the information to the best of their knowledge at the time and based on their past and extensive experience. At Pete's Auto, the service is always friendly, honest, and fair. Charlie, Bob, Pete, Guy and each of the service technicians are all great folks, customer focused, and with many years of experience between them. It's even a pleasure to see Pete's wife in the store from time to time. It's like a family. I will continue to patronize Pete's Auto as long as I live in the Fox Valley. Thanks read more

I do not recommend them one bit. I had a broken timing belt on my PT Cruiser, granted it's a little harder to work on (from what I've heard). It took them over 6 WEEKS to fix. That part I can handle, I had a friends car to barrow (they would not offer a loaner car like most place would). The issue I have with them was they wouldn't keep me in the loop on the status. They would tell me it would be don in 3 days... 5 days would come and go and I would have to call them. I would ask for a call back if it was going to be longer but they never would. They would keep telling me it would be done in 3 more days; this went on for 6 weeks. Then in the end they tried to over charge me (billing me double for some of the parts). BS! read more

Brought my car there for tires, belts and tuneup. Scheduled an appointment and yet for some reason it took 2 days to get back to me. What's the point of an appointment? Then when I went to pick my car up the price was $200 more than what they quoted me. When I asked why they said they broke a bolt changing one of the belts and had to replace the pulley. And why do I have to pay for your incompetence?? Car seems to run fine but I was not impressed with their customer service at all. At least cut me a nice deal but no. And with a million car repair stores, service is what needs to stand out, and it does not at petes. read more

junkyard mechanics? tTook all afternoon to get a hose replaced which should have taken 5 minutes. They broke another part taking it off, I had to pay for it! Problems on the way home, cutting out missing, not starting. Next night drove a few minutes and had to have it towed. Break more than they fix,and they are really slow doing it.. I have used them three times on the suggestion of a coworker. I have found them to be very thorough and easy to talk to about issues. When I scheduled a major (105K) service on my Honda they told me it would likely take one day but warned it could be 2. I planned for 2 and it was done in 1. When I asked about a fuel injector cleaning they told me they do offer the service but advised it is $100 and they only recommend it if there are fuel problems. They were aware my car had no problems and suggested against it. It seems clear to me through everything that they only recommend needed work. As for a loaner car another poster mentioned - I'd like to know where all these service places are that offer such a thing? I also found their pricing to be much better than a Honda dealership. read more
