Is it open? There were no lights on, but yes, it was open for business.

What a shock it was to discover that this seemingly abandoned, Depression-era storefront conceals one of the most venerable and storied businesses in Forth Worth. When I walked in, it struck me as the hollywood-version of a frontier town hatter's workshop, intended as a movie set for an old western moving picture show. Wooden head forms sat like statues on rows of shelves. Ancient presses and tools were left in disarray, as though the workman had just walked away a century ago. Only one of three ceiling fans creaked lazily to stir warm air inside the cavernous chamber. It was a snapshot of a moment in time, and I was enchanted. No one greeted me until I had poked around for a minute. Then, a kindly-looking young gentleman appeared from a doorway and asked if he could help. I was welcome to browse and ask questions. The great-grandson of the original owner returned to his bench in the rear workroom and left me to nose around the place. Time-travel is possible, as Peters' Hat Shop proves: all of the original manual equipment, wooden forms, tools, and materials from nearly 99 years ago are not only preserved here, but still used daily to create hand-crafted headwear for discerning gents. You can see my photos. I would have gladly paid for a museum tour here, but it continues its life as a working hat shop. The selection of off-the-rack styles and range of sizes is sure to suit most men, with straw fedoras, bowlers, sun hats, and more. Peters' house-made specialty is the classic cowboy hat, but they can make (or renovate) any style you wish. Custom orders are currently backed up six months out, according to the owner, but quality is surely worth the wait. Check out Peters' history at its website: http://www.pbhats.com What a treat it was to stumble on this place! Next time I'm in Fort Worth, I'll be back for another hat shop experience, and maybe put in my order for a John Wayne or Tom Mix.

So, there is something both uniquely Texan and uniquely endearing to the process of unearthing (or, better yet, conjuring) your ideal lid. Peters Brothers, where I dropped in today for a spell, isn't huge. It isn't as put together as your top-shelf haberdasheries are where the hats are trendy and the atmosphere trends toward hipster. Peters Brothers isn't that. What it is is more akin to a time capsule, that generous throwback wherein *all* hats were custom, because, come to think of it, if you buy a hat, chances are you'll be wearing that sucker for weddings and funerals (including, quite possibly, your own), business meetings and just 'cause, so's you can tilt it at the right time to say howdy. You can pay a pretty penny for a lid at Peters Brothers, and a quick survey of the pricing structure seemed to indicate that custom crafted hats could run you anywhere from around 100 bones to easily 500 or more. I'm sure if you really got creative, they'd be ready to help you print Benjamins, and no doubt you'd emerge with a hair topper that'd spin Tom Mix jealous. That'd haunt Roy Rogers in its perfection. That would, hush-your-mouth...encourage yet untold animations of Will Rogers. There's a little magic they're weaving at Peters Brothers. Who knows if your perfect hat lurks within: but I'm guessing that if it does, it's snug.

The hats are pretty pricey. The customized ones are like 140 and Stetson hats are like 200. They also have clothes and etc.

I visited their main Fleastyle store in the stockyards, paid for an appointment, and struggled to design a hat. They handed me a tray and then silently walked away without walking me through the process. It seemed like they were too busy doing other things to even make a connection with me. I wish it had been more personal and engaging! I didn't even end up making a hat and I got directed to go down to Wide Brim , as there were predesigned hats there. I thought about not even going to see the other hats because I did not want to experience the so called 'customer service' they provided. My husband talked me into going down to the other store just to see what they had and I am so glad I did. After walking in I started trying on the hats and started to get a bit frustrated not being able to find one that fit my head and Kayla quickly stepped over and explained exactly how they worked. After talking to her and realizing she had only been working there about a month or so we were shocked at how incredible she treated us and how much she knew about the hats! With her help I actually found a gorgeous hat that was perfect and after buying a hat box she even took the time to close the store and run to storage to get me one! Overall she turned the entire hat search into a blessing!

Fincher's at the Stock Show where they had a booth selling Justin Boots -- and the experience was outstanding. Earlier that day, we visited several other booths and honestly felt disappointed. There was very little assistance, and most places seemed overpriced and uninterested in helping customers. Then we wandered into C.B. Fincher's booth and were greeted by J. Morton -- and everything changed. J. helped fit our twin boys and was incredibly patient with them as they tried to figure out what they wanted. He had them try on multiple boots in various sizes and took the time to teach them what to look for in the "perfect fit." He didn't rush them or push a sale. Instead, he focused on making sure they understood the fit and felt confident in their choice. He also made sure we, as parents, were completely comfortable and happy with their selections. The boots worked out great, the price was very fair, and the quality is excellent. What really stood out wasn't just the product -- it was the service. J. Morton was a true salesman in the best sense of the word. It was obvious that he cared more about making us feel welcome and taken care of than simply making a sale. Great prices. Great quality boots. But the real star of this western store is the people. Real quality products and real quality people. We'll absolutely be back. If you'd like, I can also shorten this into a more punchy Google-style review version.
