Update: Nominal vs actual dimensional pricing. I understand the implicit standard but it wouldn't hurt to make that an explicit statement during purchasing given the nature of the DIY clientele segment they target. But thanks to Mr. Peterman for reaching out and clarifying. It's essentially how meat is sold at restaurants. --------- Unsure how I feel. I was a first time customer and I'm new at board feet for sure but I'm not new to basic math. I'd have to guess that in order to hit the 6 board feet I was charged for I'd have to do some significant rounding. Thickness: 3/4" Width: 5 3/4" (being generous 6 maybe on a crown) Length: 145" (again rounding up slightly to give benefit of the doubt) 145 x 6 x .75 = 652.5 / 144 = 4.53125 Even if they're rounding up from halves it's still over charging via inaccurate measurement. Again I could be dead wrong here but this is a questionable first impression. If I'm wrong I'd love to hear from them and I'd be happy to update my review. read more

They were just so helpful here. My first time buying good wood for a furniture project & they walked me thru what i needed.

A handyman referred me to this place raving about how nice their woods are. We went there on a Saturday to check it out for ourselves. Their front entrance door was locked with a sign telling us to go to back loading area due to shortage of staff. They have a large selection of all kinds of woods. I am impressed by the quality of their more expensive cuts. But the cheaper kiln dried pine 2x4s are about the same quality as those you can get at the big box home improvement stores. No need to go there if you just want some regular 2x4s. The staff there are quite helpful and nice. We didn't have to wait long for service and they let us go into their restricted area to pick our own wood. If you are into woodworking, this is the place to go for all your nicer quality woods. read more

Always had great service, a little sketchy my last visit. I ordered a 5'x5' 3/4" Baltic Birch, didn't look at the receipt, the forklift brought a 4x8x3/4", that was on the receipt, it was about $120.00 if I remember correctly. So I went back to the office and said I wanted a5x5 x 3/4 and the guy said it was the same price. The guy on the forklift just rolled his eyes when I told him. After attending this year's industry show AWFS in Vegas, I stopped by the Peterman lumber yard to pick up some materials for my library shelving project. They made a board-foot error but were quick to remedy it. The staff is friendly, and they have a culture of integrity and customer focus. Some suppliers lack these basic business principles, which has significantly narrowed the ones I use for my personal or business projects. When things go well I like to acknowledge that so others can find the good places. Besides sheet goods, hardware, and other materials, they have a good stock of hardwood and exotics that I use for furniture, art frames, and built-ins. I was eyeing some 8/4 walnut for an upcoming project, and some beefy floating shelf/ countertop brackets. It's an easy buying experence overall. After I paid, I went around to the back and pulled up to the bay doors, and carted my boards for loading, and got done fairly quickly as I was limited on time for this one. The whole process was intuitive and easy, which to me is important. I always like to look around and wind up finding more than what I came in for. read more

Came here twice to look for some nice hardwood lumber to use for a project. First time i came here, i got mildly lost as the GPS showed the business at the end of the complex. I was redirected by the business that was in that noted spot fairly quickly because i guess they may get a lot of people who get misled. You can walk straight to the back where the lumber is stored in the back warehouse area, past all the offices. First time i came here, i wasn't feeling that well so i just walked around seeing the types of wood they had and left. Prior to the 2nd time coming here, I had contacted Joe Lombardi through yelp by e-mail and he had given me a recommendation and pricing for what I needed. Lumber is sold by the BF (board foot) + 10% (industry standard) if you want one that is planed. Price may vary depending on width you need and thickness. They can do quick cuts to fit your car but I'm sure they'd be willing to cut the board down to almost preferred length if you asked nicely. They have lots of various types of wood, ranging from maple to poplar to exotic ones like purpleheart wood ! (drools... purpleheart is like a dream to have and work with because of how nice the color comes through with a clear coat on top). I came here for a 2nd visit and was directed to go pick what i wanted in the warehouse, have it measured and get a slip to take back inside to pay, before cutting. As mentioned before, they charge by the board foot + 10% for the planed sides. I bought a 12 x 1 ft board but due to thickness and it being a wide board stock, it was 12bf x2 +10% . Very simple and easy process. I need to go check what kind of hinges i need because they stock a ton of different cabinet hinges and i have no idea what i need. Highly recommended place. Good quality wood. I don't think there are any other places on this side of town that sells lumber like this. Definitely not at this thickness anyway. Pricing seems really fair. Huge issue with thick wood sold at places like Home Depot or Lowes is they are warped and split. Peterman's are really good quality and they seem to keep the warehouse at a constant temperature. My board was really straight and needed little prep work. There was a small split on my board but it was nothing major. I was able to use it still without any difficulty after a little wood fill. read more

This place is like a candy store for anyone the least bit interested in woodworking. It's definitely a place catering to professionals, or least people with a lot of experience. But, they do a great job of working with amateurs. They answered my questions and were very helpful. They will also cut the pieces small to fit in your car if you don't have a truck. Peterman Lumber is not friendly and actually quite rude, they send the wrong products knowingly and yet wonder why you want to return it because they sell you what they want not what you ask for and they do not sell organic wood they lie about that part. As well as playing favoritism with their employees. I know from personal experience because my uncle tried buying wood from California from this company and they delivered the wrong products they gave him what they wanted not what he ordered, and they didn't allow him to return the products or get a refund. Will never buy from this company again after my experience. read more

Everything is fine and dandy when they take your money but when it's time to return something they give you stories. They would not take a sheet of plywood that I bought. I've been going there for years not to mention (I never returned one thing) and spent thousands of dollars over there. So then I buy another sheet of plywood since I'm there and I need it to finish the project the warehouse guy tells me there is no picking and choosing here but yet they can pick and choose to take returns.... fuck that!!! Was so aggravated that I spoke to the head manager Ed and he did not give a shit. They have a great selection of hardwood lumber and are more than happy to let you pick through the pile. The prices tend to be very reasonable. Exotic hardwood is expensive, but Peterman's pricing is usually cheaper than the big online vendors (and you don't have to pay for shipping, which is nice). They have no problem working with small hobbyist guys like me, even though I usually just buy one or two boards at a time. The warehouse staff are busy, but courteous, and the folks in the sales office are great. Quick tip: hardwood lumber is sold by the board foot. One board foot is 144 cubic inches. A board that's 12" x 12" x 1" thick (referred to as "four quarter" or 4/4) would be 1 board foot. At Peterman, they calculate board feet and then add 10% if the lumber you're buying has already been surfaced. If you buy rough lumber, you save that 10%, but you have to joint and plane it yourself. read more

Very unhappy about return policy. Promised a 30 day return time limit on materials recieved. After 15 days a return was attempted. We were refused. They said you signed for it , you own it. Also said would not accept because it was summer. Really? We are stuck with approximately $1500 of materials. Some of it was damaged by the driver while still in the driveway. When questioned he said he was advised by management not to except any materials from this address. Sheesh. Would give less than one star if we could. read more

In m professional opinion, Peterman Lumber is an outstanding company. Ed, Joe and especially Mr. Peterman are always available and supportive. As an interior designer, I depend on great materials for my projects and great support, so that my clients buy just enough material, not too much and no too little. All of my carpenters use Peterman and we have never had a problem with them keeping their promises. After all, no one is perfect but Peterman Lumber is darn close. Come for the Baltic birch, stay for everything else. I'll keep it short, they stock a good selection of hardwoods and exotics. They let you pick your boards. They have reasonable prices. Unfortunately I came in with my wife and a few black walnut boards caught her eye so now I'm on the hook for making a new headboard. Navigating is a little tricky because it's set up like your average pro shop but don't let that stop you. Hit the warehouse look around and find what you like. You will have to go over to customer service (will call desk) to check current pricing. Make note of the thickness of what you are looking at. In my case it was 25/32 Black Walnut. If you like the price go out and pick your boards. Once done picking ask one of the warehouse guys to get you measured. Everything is by the board foot. They'll give you a ticket to take back to the service desk where you can pay. After paying you'll get a receipt and a green slip showing what you purchased. Green slip is for the warehouse guys to confirm you've got everything in your cart and/or if they need to pull any sheet goods for you. In my case the Baltic birch that I originally came for. At that point they'll ask you if you need help loading and you're on your way. Sorry, I lied about keeping it short but stop buying grossly overpriced low quality crap wood from big box stores. Just had my first interaction with Peterman Lumber here in Las Vegas. I needed a 8/4 x 10 piece of maple for a project I'm working on. Their stock of 8/4 was nonexistent in anything over 6". Settled on a piece of 5/4 H.E.Maple that was 98 1/2" x 9 1/2" (only slightly over 9" for about 2' of the board though - which I didn't realize until I got it home). I'm new to the whole buying lumber thing, so I might be making a mistake, but I can only get my math to work out to a bit over 8 bf (bf = board feet, which is how they sell the lumber). They charged me for 11 bf however. I just realized the overcharge and I'll contact them tomorrow (since they don't have email or another way to contact them after hours). We'll see how they respond, but so far, not too impressed. Suggestion to others is to confirm the width of the board for the full length, as well as the thickness (my 5/4 is actually only 1 1/8"), then, make sure they do the bf calculation correctly ((L" x W" x D") /144). Update - 4/25/2017 Contacted Peterman to let them know I felt I was overcharged. They explained that they don't charge based on the dimension of the lumber, but the pre-dimension size, then they add 10% for straightening. So, my board, that was sold as 5/4, which is actually close to 1 1/8" thick, I was charged for 1 1/2" and then 10% for the "straightening". I'm not sure if this is an industry practice or not since I'm new to this, but it doesn't seem fair to be paying for 25% less than you're actually getting. I'll look at CA wood suppliers for my next wood purchase and see if Peterman Lumber's pricing model stands. At this point, I'm leaving my rating at 2 stars. read more

Maybe I missed it, but no where on Peterman's web site could I find any indication that they would not cut boards to length unless I bought the whole board, I even received a quote for some boards, about 7 bf, and not a word was said, but never the less I was given a quote for around $46.00, and not even on the quote itself does it specify I had to buy the whole board. Only when I got there, after driving about 30 miles, was I told anything about not cutting the boards to the size. I was told they used to do that, but no more, sadly, that didn't help my situation. They will, however, cut boards so that it may fit in your vehicle. It doesn't make sense that I should buy 22bf of wood, when I only needed 7. If I buy this wood at Home Depot, by the lineal foot, cut to size, it'll cost $70.97, if I buy it at Peterman's it'll cost about 50 cents less. Just sayin'. read more
