A handyman referred me to this place raving about how nice their woods are. We went there on a Saturday to check it out for ourselves. Their front entrance door was locked with a sign telling us to go to back loading area due to shortage of staff. They have a large selection of all kinds of woods. I am impressed by the quality of their more expensive cuts. But the cheaper kiln dried pine 2x4s are about the same quality as those you can get at the big box home improvement stores. No need to go there if you just want some regular 2x4s. The staff there are quite helpful and nice. We didn't have to wait long for service and they let us go into their restricted area to pick our own wood. If you are into woodworking, this is the place to go for all your nicer quality woods.

After attending this year's industry show AWFS in Vegas, I stopped by the Peterman lumber yard to pick up some materials for my library shelving project. They made a board-foot error but were quick to remedy it. The staff is friendly, and they have a culture of integrity and customer focus. Some suppliers lack these basic business principles, which has significantly narrowed the ones I use for my personal or business projects. When things go well I like to acknowledge that so others can find the good places. Besides sheet goods, hardware, and other materials, they have a good stock of hardwood and exotics that I use for furniture, art frames, and built-ins. I was eyeing some 8/4 walnut for an upcoming project, and some beefy floating shelf/ countertop brackets. It's an easy buying experence overall. After I paid, I went around to the back and pulled up to the bay doors, and carted my boards for loading, and got done fairly quickly as I was limited on time for this one. The whole process was intuitive and easy, which to me is important. I always like to look around and wind up finding more than what I came in for.

I'm looking for live edge boards for a shelf project. Is this a type of product you offer? I'm specifically interested in white oak, 1.5" to 2" thick, 10" to 12" wide, and 4' to 8' long.

We no longer stock the live edge slabs but we have a local company that we can recommend. https://reclaimedsecrets.com/… Read more

Hi Sean! Yes Peterman Las Vegas has a cut off bin with odds and ends of our hardwood lumber - you can find some pretty exotics in there. :)

Love the hardwoods, but i hate wasting of material is there anyone that would do so re-sawing would like to do some not a commercial contractor just small projects as hobbies?

Hi Brad - there are many local carpenters! Check out our Instagram and take a look at our tagged photos to see a few of their projects. Also we have a full mill at our Fontana yard and are able to do Re-Saw work for a fee.

Often times I'll go to the general home improvement stores and only find the most popular items - which is understandable. Or, if they have some unique items, they'll only stock a couple pieces and not enough for what I'm needing. Often, I'm looking for unique sizes of different nuts and bolts. On top of it - I'm also looking for stainless steel and specific compositions with different heads. This store is so vast! There's so many aisles and if you haven't been here before, it can be overwhelming. However, everyone who works here is SO NICE. The manufacturer wanted $7 for the pair plus $11 for shipping. Amazon had packs of 50 or 100 for $6-$13 with shipping included, but the earliest delivery was Monday. As a last-ditch effort, I checked the local big-box stores, but nothing looked promising. Then I remembered McFadden-Dale and decided to make the trip before they closed. They didn't have the exact 6-32 x 7/16", but they did have 6-32 x 1/2". The staff was incredibly helpful and took the time to check the thread pitch to make sure they'd work. Best of all, four screws cost me just $0.56 instead of nearly $20--and I didn't end up with another 40 or 90 extras I'd now have to find uses for. Their credit card system was down, so it was cash only. They also close at 2 PM on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays.

We had allen wrenches, but were missing the exact ones we needed for dismantling the bed. Fortunately, there was this Ace Hardware store just down the street, so I figured we could go in and see if there were any possible inexpensive solutions. An associate asked if I needed help (I unfortunately didn't catch the guy's name) and I mentioned the predicament, admittedly somewhat worried I'd have to buy a whole new allen wrench set just to get the one that I needed for the job. He took me to a place in the back of the store with old allen wrenches people had donated, often left over from similar bed/furniture dismantling/assembly jobs, and these were free. He gave me the option of taking a few and seeing if any of them worked. I did take about three of them, and fortunately, one of them got the job done! If I'm in the area and have any further hardware needs and the like, I'll definitely be coming around.

This was my first time attending the National Hardware Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center…read more The show is divided into two major sections--lawn, home, and garden--and regular hardware items such as tool boxes, welding helmets, plumbing supplies and everything else you could ever lump into the "hardware" category. I spent more time in the home and garden section even though most of the items don't have a use in Las Vegas for many of us. Since we've traded grass for xeriscape, many of us have no need for lawn mowers, weed whackers, et. al. The lawn and garden section was in the North Hall of the convention center. I met some very nice and interesting people. It's a much more laid back show than the geeks of CES. I eventually made my way to the Central Hall for the regular hardware items. One of the standouts in this area was the large electrical displays. If I were giving Benjamin Braddock advice this year, I'd tell him, "LEDs". There were so many vendors with lights of various kinds that used LEDs to generate bright lights. After the Central Hall, I went outside to the outdoor, recreation, and tailgate area. They had a number of food vendors here tied in with some kind of cooking item. There were several vendors selling outdoor pizza bakers that rotated the pizzas as they cooked. They also had samples. I was surprised at how much food and food related vendors that were at the show. I expected a lot of wrenches, toilets, and other hardware items. Imagine my surprise when I'm given samples of beef jerky (teriyaki flavor) on entering the show to get my credentials. I'll attend next year. It's too good a show to miss and it's at a great time of the year!
