We came during shoulder season; we could easily see this place keeping the lights on with delicious meals for hardworking boatbuilders in the dark of winter. The ambiance is "run-down basement." The service is slow. The room is cold. I was leaning toward rating this place two stars until our fish sandwiches arrived. They were perfect. I've worked with deep fryers, and I'm here to tell you: Peter Trout's uses clean grease at the right temperature. Our fish was crispy without being greasy, plus it it had the clean look and zero aftertaste of clean grease in a clean fryer. Bam: right back up to three stars we go. Fantastic food. We came here twice for lunch while visiting Acadia. First visit we had the whole fried chicken, biscuits, picked and house ranch, sides were broccolini, fiddleheads and cauliflower and a Cesar salad which was plenty of food for 4 people. Our second visit it was Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, a fish sandwich which was a whole filet of haddock huge, a Cesar salad and wedge. Again delicious and a lot of food. What a cool spot right by the water. We came on a Friday evening at 7:30 and realized the restaurant closes at 8:00. We were able to grab a picnic table outside. We enjoyed the cool air and the views while we waited for our food. We ordered a few of the sides (3/$18) The market fish sandwich and mushroom toast. We waited quite a long time for our food. But once it came out, we dug in! The mushroom toast was phenomenal and came topped with an egg. The fish sandwich was HUGE! Would have loved to have a little more side with the sandwich - it came with three small little smashed potatoes and the fish was overly battered. We had to wait a very long time for the bill, when we realized we were probably forgotten because we were the only ones sitting outside by then. I went inside to ask for our bill and the server was unapologetic and even seemed annoyed that I was bothering him. We would definitely come back! Sooooo - we came into this place hoping for fish and chips- which looked amazing. Miffed because dinner menu was not til 2:30. Ethan greeted us with a smile, kind of, not really... This spot is a gem! Make sure to come early.. we arrived around 7.30pm and there was a long wait.. around 45min, but the bar is first come, first serve. Unfortunately, by the time we sat down and wanted to order, their famous fish sandwich had already sold out :'(. We were told they were understaffed, so the orders were taking a while to come out. By the time ours came, it was already past 9pm. We were one the last people at the restaurant. They close at 8pm, but as long as you get seated by then, you're fine. We shared the half fried chicken and wedge salad. They were both fantastic! The (honey/maple?) butter that came with the biscuits was delicious and unexpected. There were only two guys working that night that didn't seem to have any service experience and were not on top of their game. When we first came in, one of them said we could have the window table after they wiped it down, but then proceeded to seat the customers that came in behind us there instead. So we had to sit at the communal table next to another family under the loud music speaker. The four of us had the "special" of the day, Halibut fish and chips. We wish we asked what the price would be as it was not on a board or communicated to us. It was expensive for what was served to us. After the food took forever to come out, the serving size was laughable. It looked like they made enough for 2 plates then realized it was for 4 people and spread it amongst 4 plates. There were maybe 3 or 4 smashed small potatoes on each plate. Every other fish and chip dish we've ever had has always had an abundance of fries. Where to even begin! On a trip to Mount Desert Island, we actually had the good fortune of STAYING at Peter Trout's Tavern and Inn. I'll be brief on the Inn portion as there are not many rooms, but it was a terrific experience. There are a handful of apartments above the restaurant, and the owners live in one as well as some of the staff, but the rest are rented. A beautiful view, and easy parking across the street at the town docks where local fish come in each day. The owners and their daughter were very nice and took care of anything we needed. I would absolutely stay again! Now on to the restaurant and bar. We actually wound up eating at the restaurant three times while we were there. Of course the convenience was nice, but after trying it once we knew we wanted to try other menu items! A very nice relaxed setting, they have a sign in sheet when you walk in, and then you can hang out outside or walk across to the dock. We had great service each meal, and each was just as good as the last. The fish sandwich you honestly have to see to believe, even the pictures do not do it justice, the chicken sandwich just as impressive and probably the best I have ever had, and even the wedge salad..... you may say, "it's just a salad". But it was perfect, perfectly cooked chicken nuggets, great dressing, and CHUNKS of pork belly. I have thought about it many times since having it. No matter what you get, get a side of the smashed potatoes, they are crispy, well seasoned, and very tasty. If you are in the area, this is a great stop for food, and even better place to stay! This spot reminded me of a place I'd find at home (Brooklyn) and was hands down the best food I've eaten in a national park town We happened upon this place since we were staying down the road. As someone who eats vegetarian 95% of the time, I was attracted to all the thoughtfully crafted veggie sides. It was pretty packed on a Friday night but we were able to get seated outside right away. Staff was pleasant, laid back but still attentive I ended up getting the mushroom egg toast and shared a bunch of sides with my husband. -mushroom toast was excellent sourdough grilled, buttered and topped with delicious mushroom. The egg was a bit hard but it did have some runniness to it -market fish sandwich was enormous! Looked ridiculous in one little brioche bun. This could definitely be split between two people. It came with crispy potatoes which were so good, you'll only wish there were more of them -biscuits with whipped honey butter- save room for these. They're off the hook tasty -asparagus - small portion, but cooked perfectly -heirloom tomatoes- so sweet and refreshing. Wow, so glad we tried this place! It's on a list of essential Maine restaurants and now I know why. It's in Southwest Harbor, tucked away near a real working boat launch. We went for late lunch on a Friday and got our choice of seats. Ordered the crab cake and the fried chicken sandwich, and they were both super large and fantastic! The chicken included 3 thighs (tender inside, nice amount of coating), with homemade pickle slices and a little aioli, and more aioli served on the side. Delicious! And even better we're the fried smashed fingerling potatoes! I could have eaten tons! Nicely crispy and salted. And the crab cake. Oh, the crab cake. Wide and tall, and full of large chunks of fresh crab, and what I'm guessing are chunks of the same buttery brioche that the sandwich was served on. Iced tea was excellent classic tea, and only $2 including a refill :-) Go find this place - you'll be glad you did. read more

I never thought that the best eating in Bar Harbor was in fact just outside of Bar Harbor. Peter Trout's Tavern sound and even at first glance looks like your run of the mill eat and drink spot near the water, but looks are deceiving. The food was terrific. I decided to step back from seafood, eyed the 'Nashville hot fried chicken sammy'. If people were fighting over the Popeye's chicken sandwiches, I think a full on brawl would break out if there was a shortage on these. This sandwich was so good, it's almost surreal. The cutlet exceeded the size of the sandwich, which is always welcome. Bread/bun should never overshadow the meat. The bun itself was excellent. Whatever sauce is on it is delicious. It's listed on the menu as "spicy stuff". What it is, it's damn good. Not done yet. The Biscuits are awesome. Nice, flaky, hot and came with a honey butter. I did not know it existed and I'm glad to now know it exists. Even re-heating ones not finished a couple days later, and they were still great. We got a shareable arugula plate. Again on the mark. Fresh with a nice peppery flavor and lightly sauced. I normally don't call out staff by name but Suzette was wonderful. Had good beer recommendations and did swell all around. Again if you're in or near Bar Harbor. Get outta there, and come to Peter Trouts. It was the best place I ate at on the island and it's not even close. read more

We arrived on a Tuesday at about 7:00. We were seated at the bar. The person tending the bar spent probably 10 minutes working other orders before even acknowledging that we were there. We eventually were given menus and waited another 10+ minutes to order drinks. We waited another 10-15 minutes before she came over to take our food order. We asked for 2 orders of chicken nuggets and a burger. After about an hour and 15 minutes, with other tables having been seated and received their food we finally got ours (we had asked about an hour in and were told our order was in). The nuggets were cold (clearly they had been fried up and just sat there). The food was ok. The bartender then proceeded to sit down at a table and talked with people she must have known. Someone else eventually closed out our tab. This was a random Tuesday. I can't imagine how bad they are on a busy night or a weekend. read more

Peter Trout's has an excellent selection of craft beers and wines and a fun tavern vibe. The food is a massive step up from how I think of tavern food. My husband and I visited for dinner and had the ribeye for two, grilled oysters and sides. The steak is locally farmed and one of the best I've had, perfectly seasoned with garlic and rosemary. The portion was very generous, so we got a whole other meal out of the leftovers. The grilled oysters and heirloom tomato salad were also excellent. The biscuits are out of this world- I would visit again just for those. It was a rainy evening so we unfortunately didn't get any food pics, but the servers were incredibly gracious and packed everything up to go. We dropped in here for lunch at a local friend's recommendation. They are definitely operating on a scaled back basis right now - only outdoor dining and to-go available. We sat outside on a Monday around 1 PM. Several other customers came to take advantage of the beer and wine to go while we ate. But other than that - activity was light. So - please check this place out for a bit if you are in the area. :-) We tried the meatloaf sandwich, fried chicken sandwich, the potato salad, sweet corn and biscuits! I would get any of these items again. It was all so good. And there were many other items I want to try! The meatloaf sandwich was served on toasted sourdough with a tomato jam. The meatloaf was so tender and light. Not something you can item say about meatloaf. The fried chicken sandwich was moist and almost flaky - comments were made that it was almost as flaky as fried fish. My only caution was that it took a while for food to come out - but we weren't in a hurry! And it was more than worth the wait! I do hope to come here again next year on my annual trek to the Island! read more

This was our first meal on MDI. Since we were staying in Southwest Harbor this was perfect it has a great location by the water, friendly service and good food. We came during brunch hours and I wish we could've ordered from the full menu as the brunch menu was a bit limited. The breakfast burger ($17) with egg and pork belly was absolutely delicious, but doesn't come with anything - I added some smashed potatoes which were pretty good. My husband had the crab cake Benedict - also delicious and came with a few smashed potatoes on the side. I've seen a lot of reviews criticizing the service at this kitschy establishment overlooking Southwest Harbor and neighboring mountains. It's not the servers' fault that patrons look universally perturbed, but the kitchen. They seem to only be able to cook for one table at a time. It's like a form of cruel and unusual punishment. We waited almost 90 minutes for our fish sandwich, fried chicken, smashed potatoes and wedge salad. The vibe in the place was not welcoming, and after eating there twice in two years with similar experiences, my family and me are convinced that they will only bring your food when you show signs of literal desperation - standing by your table to flag down a server, pointing at your empty beer glasses, taking four walks with your distraught children... Again, the walks and associated views are epic. Truly world-class. The chicken and fried fish are delicious. Worth the pain and suffering we endured? Only time will tell, when we try to convince our girls to overcome their PTSD and go to Peter Trouts again next year. read more

Ate here twice on our last vacation, and I have to say this is probably the best food out I have ever eaten. Both times we got the market, fish sandwich, smashed potatoes and asparagus. The fish by itself was the best we'd ever had, but with the tartar sauce or the sauce from the asparagus it was simply amazing. The smashed potatoes are the best preparation of a potato I have ever encountered, and the portions were all very good. Given the quality I think the prices are incredibly reasonable. If this food were in Boston, you would never be able to get it nor could you afford it. read more
