The inside is similar to the concept of the Goodwill bins. Not every yarn's fiber content is labeled, but the prices are really really affordable. The mill is not wheelchair accessible: the entrance is up a set of stairs. The store itself is up another flight of stairs (I did not see an elevator, but I don't know for sure if there isn't one), and the interior is pretty cramped by all the yarn. read more

Visited in April and stock was very picked over, most cones were string-thin, cotton or chenille. BUT I still found 3 SHOPPING BAGS full of wool and acrylic for myself and charity knitting. I can only imagine how much fun it would be when bins are full!! Many cones are dusty, can have a stale smell, but the bargains are fabulous!!! I got a huge cone of mohair for 10% of retail! But the day I was there, it was the ONLY cone of mohair I saw. There is a restroom (very old), and the man in charge helped carry my purchases down to the car. read more

I like that someone described this as an oddity. It's dark, smelly, and just piles upon piles of huuuge cones of mystery yarn. No labels about content, no yardage info, even the gauge is iffy (because it's on a cone, so it's compressed). Just stuff. The guy buys mill ends and mistake things that bigger yarn manufacturers don't want - kinda like the TJ Maxx of yarn. So some of the stuff is really good; a lot of it is "wtf??" I know for sure that a bunch of the cones were Lion Brand homespun. Mostly you just have to rely on the man's memory & guess for what the fiber content & weight is. Since 95% of stuff is on cones, you won't find much worsted or heavier weights. But he does have a wall of hanks with really nice stuff - the actual stuff you'll find in a nice yarn shop and for the same price as everything else: $8 per pound for 100% wool; $4/lb for wool blends. You just gotta wash it a lot to get out that weird factory smell. Vanessa T's photos show everything perfectly. He also has a big supply of random vintage notions. Finally stopped in after many years. You def need to have knowledge of yarn weights and content. No tags. I am a former textiles executive and lifelong hand knitter and thought the visit was quirky and fun I have never shopped for yarn by weight. The owner is very helpful and attentive. Don't be intimidated. You can ask the owner what the content or price is and he will weigh the cone and quote the cost. And he can convert the yardage for you based on the weight. I did my own weight-to-yardage calculation when I got home and he was close. And it's an old warehouse, if you want pretty store displays and neatly stacked, color- coordinated yarn skeins, this isn't your thing lol. I bought 3 excellent wool cones for $23! Sportweight and Worsted. 500-3000 yds each. I estinated it is 4,400 yds, equivalent to about 24 skeins of natural yarn. ($240 at Michael's or JoAnns). That's a great hour spent finding bulk wool yarn on a Friday afternoon! read more

Peter Patchis Yarns is a wondrous oddity. My mother recently picked up machine knitting again after a 17 year break. I haven't been in over 20 years, but when I went today, I instantly recognized the mill and its distinct smell. It's not a cute little shop and there's no knitting circles. No one's going to offer you tea or help with patterns. It's just an open floor space, chock full of all sorts of worsted yarns in an abundance of colors. The vast majority of their stuff isn't suitable for fine, delicate wearables, but weavers seem to have found heaven there. It's a great resource for big projects, as they sell the stuff by the pound. You can't be afraid to get dirty. This place is not for the meek. There are cones upon cones upon cones to dig through. Hike up your skirt and jump in. read more

This place is the best yarn store I've ever been to. The owner is the friendliest, honest and knowledgeable. The quality of yarn and his prices are unbelievable. Have (begrudgingly) finished a beginner weaving class in CT, and signed up (again, begrudgingly!) for the next sessions. Visited Peter Patchis with my weaving partner and our husbands today - yup - begrudgingly , hoping to find a yarn that I love to build my next project around. PETER PATCHIS YARNS got me excited about weaving!! It is OLD SCHOOL OUTLET SHOPPING! We had so much fun and I almost immediately upon entering found the yarn texture and color that I love. Peter was incredibly helpful and nice. He answered all of our beginner questions and it's clear he knows what's up. We spoke of the old American Thread, which is close to our home, when we saw an old box with an American Thread shipping label on it. We spoke of sewing machines, sergers, looms, knitting machines. Peter is an awesome guy and he even helped carry our huge bags down to the car ! I am thrilled with all the beautiful colors and textures and different types of yarns that I chose for my project, and so is my friend. We will be back SOON, because even though we bought quite a bit, the prices are insanely reasonable. Peter will wind off the large spools if you don't need the whole thing. Thank you Peter Patchis! Forget about nice lighting, sterile smells, and organized shelves with everything labelled. Also forget about nosy store workers and outrageous prices. Go on an adventure and take a look around. I'm sure you'll find something that will inspire you to start a new project. I don't ever come here with something in mind. I come to see what I should do next. my family has been buying yarn here for almost thirty years starting with my grandmother. you never know what you will find at Peter Patchis but i always seem to find what i'm looking for. The cones of thin thread are ideal for weavers and machine knitters but lately there have been big cones of worsted and bulky wool in great colors too. Buying yarn on cones by the pound here is an inexpensive way to get a lot of yardage for sweater knitting and afghans and you can get some great stuff if you know what you're looking at. He also sells knitting machines. Peter is really nice and helpful and even lets my dog shop with me. I'm so glad this place is still around. read more

Woooow is all I could say.. There are lots of yarns in this place that are sold by the pound at a reasonable price. Im from NYC and was visiting my family in RI and I must say the owner is VERY friendly and knowledgeable about the yarns and where he purchased them.. The only thing is that the yarns are in large boxes so if you dont mind a little digging, this is a GREAT place to buy yarns. I only wished that all the yarns were nicely displayed on shelfs which is the only reason why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. read more
