We have been seeing Dr. Grandaw since we moved to Redding ~9 yrs ago. My son is now 16. He's an athlete and thriving . Dr. Grandaw has been incredible . I love that he cares to listen and educate . He includes us on all our options. His staff has followed up with us timely regarding appointments, labs and prescriptions. This review is for a first time wellness check for a 2 year old boy by Doctor Peter Grandaw. After moving from the Bay Area, CA to Redding, we did a lot of research and talked to locals about who the best pediatrician in the area was. Doctor Grandaw exceeded those expectations. From the child friendly waiting room, well child decorated check up rooms, and friendly staff, a tight ship is run. All forms requested for preschool admission were filled out quickly. All referrals and dentist recommendations for being out of town proved to be exactly as quality as recommended by Doc Grandaw. The actual doctor visit and interaction with my son was a miracle to behold. My son was terrified of doctors up until he met Doctor Grandaw. He immediately connected with my son by talking directly to him most of the check up. Not a tear from a toddler that had been traumatized by a biopsy previously. I thought we were in trouble leaving the Bay Area and leaving a pediatrician we trusted. But, even on a busy Monday at his office, Doctor Grandaw took the time and treated my son with respect, asking all the right questions about his health and family history, and it made all the difference. We feel fortunate to have him as a doctor, and highly recommend him. read more

Dr Grandaw had been seeing my son since birth (until recently) and while we always felt that the staff he had working in his office (specifically the front office staff) were always incredibly rude and very short with us, we always let it roll off our backs because we felt the care our child was receiving from the doctor himself was exceptional and worth the interactions with his staff that we found less than stellar. Recently they have adopted a "cash payment" policy where they told us that we were to pay for appointments up front and their staff would give us the information needed to file a claim with our insurance for reimbursement since, as they said, it's been taking 3-4 months for them to get paid by the insurance companies. While inconvenient, not the end of the world. So we paid almost $80 cash for a well care visit that should have cost $0. The next week our insurance claim had been denied because their office also filed a claim for the same appointment they charged us cash for and insurance had issued a payment to them.. so, fast forward another week we took our child in again because he was ill. Dr Grandaw saw him and prescribed an antibiotic. At reception they wanted another almost $70 for this appointment. We explained to the receptionist that our prior claim had been denied because they also filed a claim so our insurance had issued them a payment as per our Insurance website and tried to show her the documentation from our insurance. We just wanted to ask if the prior payment we had made could go towards this appointment since our insurance had issued them a payment for it, they rightfully owed us a refund, so we wanted it to go towards this appointment. We were told there was no way to do this since they "are not filing claims" however when we tried to show the receptionist our insurance page showing our denied claim and their approved and payment issued claim we were asked to leave the office and received a notice in the mail stating he would not be treating our child anymore. All seemingly because we were asking for a previous cash payment to be put towards the new appointment cost since we could show there was a payment issued to them for said appointment. We did receive a refund from his office in the mail after another week and a half or so, but at this point we have been treated horribly because of errors their office was making. I am so disappointed at how this situation was handled whether the error was unintentional or otherwise, should have been handled much better. read more

When i first took my children to grandaw he was fantastic. He was happy, friendly and most of all, made my children (as well as myself) feel comfortable. Over the course of 2 years his mood and demeanor changed drastically. He seems miserable and seems to take it out on those around him. The straw the broke the camels back for me- was when i called the after hours line to inquire of the proper dosage of Tylenol for my 4 month old son. He was SO rude and told me next time i needed to wait until 6 or 7am to call or just guess on the dosage because it was rude for me to wake him out of a deep sleep with a dosage question. After interviewing several Pediatricians around town while I was pregnant I found Dr Grandaw and knew he was the best Dr. for my baby girl, so I chose him. Almost 6 months later and I was 100% right. He is everything I've ever hoped for in a Pediatrician. He listens to what I have to say, gives great advise, & isn't pushy. Another big plus is that the girls at the front desk and the nurses are all so nice. I called to get some information on teething and someone called me back right away. They try and help you without you needing to come in and spend more money. Each and every time I have called or went in for an apt I was completely happy with my experience and my baby girl seems to be too. Update: 2 years later we still absolutely love Dr Grandaw! My daughter has never been scared to go to the dr thanks to him and his amazing staff. He shows that he cares and is truly the best at his job. So very thankful and feel blessed to have him as our pediatrician. read more

I don't know what led Matilda to think the staff there isn't friendly or for Marisa P. to hint that Dr. Grandaw treats his established patients differently than his new ones, but I have to respectfully disagree with their statements. I will admit that I read their reviews shortly after moving up here from Los Angeles at the end of January and was very skeptical and ready for a let down having chosen Dr. Grandaw. He came highly recommended by everyone we met up here and we were excited to become patients, but after reading these two negative reviews I expected the Doctor to be dismissive and I fully expected we would have to find a new doctor...boy was I wrong. Not only is his staff amazing Dr. Grandaw lived up to the hype. My wife and I are in NO WAY opposed to vaccinations, but we are against doing more than one at a time. Dr. Grandaw listened to every concern we had and had no problem doing our son's vaccinations as we felt comfortable. He is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and warm to the parents as well as to our baby. He even makes sure to explain to you the baby Tylenol formula needed for dosages at the time of the exam based on your baby's new weight. I really like that, because everyone has their own opinion on how much of a dose you should give and having a trained Doctor explain to you what the proper amount is and why is reassuring. So while it sucks that Marisa P. and Matilda had bad experiences with Dr. Grandaw I am glad I didn't let their reviews deter me from taking our son to see Dr. Grandaw in the first place. Had I listened who knows what kind of doctor we would have ended up with. If you want a doctor that listens to parental concerns and knows what he is doing then I suggest you make an appointment with Dr. Grandaw right away! read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr Grandaw!He's so good with children and always takes his time during visits. He is thorough in his care & makes my shy son very comfortable~ has him laughing as soon as he enters the room When my son was very ill, he had him admitted into the hospital in record timing!! Then called me that evening to check on him. (All orders had already been received by hospital staff when we got there after the 5 minute drive!) Each time I've needed a last-minute visit, the staff got back to me immediately and got me in to see him that day! When I needed last minute records, they prepared them quickly- I just drove by & grabbed them. I wouldn't want any other doctor for my son! read more

****UPDATE**** We recently had another baby, and hadn't found another Dr. we liked for peds. Since we didn't want to vaccinate right away, and knew he was okay with that, we decided his laid back approach would be fine. He has been EXCELLENT with this child. The baby was born with some issues, and he was very thorough in investigating it. He spent time addressing my fears, and making my husband & I feel better. He was also more attentive when I brought my older child. This child had an emergency, and Jessica (office staff) asked if I could be there in 15 minutes! He helped my child right away, referred her care out, and was very thorough. I have been in this office several times since the birth of my new baby, and no longer feel the way I did 2 years ago. I wonder if he read my previous review, because he looks me in the eye, and makes sure to talk to me, rather than my child. Either way, I wanted to give him "props", and raise his rating from a 2 to a 5. :) 6/19/2009----Everyone loves him, and I wanted to, too. I have brought my children to see him on several occasions. Every single time I have brought my child in, his response is that it is no big deal, or that we will "wait for two weeks" and make another appointment. One of the visits was a follow up visit after my child landed in the emergency room. The doctors there wanted further testing done. Grandaw said he was going to "save" me money, and not request the further testing. When I told him I wanted it for peace of mind and said that the leading specialist had told us to get my child tested again, he yawned and then left the room in the middle of me telling him how upsetting it was to see my child in that condition,and I did want further testing! (He also told my sibling that he wanted to "save money" and not order an x-ray when her child had a broken bone!) Every visit I have had with him, he cuts me off and will start talking to the kids and tell them little stories in a cutesy mother-ese type voice, but not address the questions I have asked. My kids have ongoing issues that he has not addressed with anything more helpful than "Lots of kids have that." or "Hmm, strange, I have not heard of a child having that", even though we have a family history of these things. I have overlooked a lot with him, since everyone *loves* him... But, I will not be going back to him. I'd rather have an abrupt doctor who will give me answers, than a doctor who cuts me off to tell cutesy stories to my kids to avoid answering questions or reading x-rays/lab reports read more

He is a great doctor but the wait time are horrible. If you need to get in that day they will squeeze you in but expect at least an hour wait, which is so much fun when you have a sick kid whilst fighting exhaustion. I don't know how much longer we will stay with this practice. read more

I am new to the area and needed a pediatrician for my baby. Several people recommended Dr. Grandaw, so I figured he must be good. While he is very nice, I don't feel like he takes things very seriously. I also don't feel like his office staff is very friendly. The office is very clean, although I have had to wait over 30 minutes to be seen (with a crying baby that I had to carry around the office waiting room). I just wasn't overly impressed with Dr. Grandaw, and maybe that's because everyone said he was so great, so I had overly high expectations. But, the thing that finally caused me to switch doctors was at my baby's four month check up. Dr. Grandaw looked him over fairly quickly, then mentioned, oh by the way, he's dropped from the 75th percentile to the 5th percentile in weight. I freaked out. I had recently gone back to work, so I thought maybe he wasn't eating enough at daycare. Dr. Grandaw advised that I buy new bottles and nipples and even go up to Mercy and see what type of help they could offer. He said that if it didn't correct itself, we would have to run all kinds of tests on my baby. I left there in tears, so upset that there might be something wrong with my baby. We went to the store and bought every bottle and nipple they had, I took the day off work, and pulled him out of daycare all week so he could be with my mom to feed him. A couple days later, I decided to google what his proper weight should be so I knew what I was aiming for. When I looked at the growth charts, something seemed wrong. When I plotted his weight, it put him at about the 50th percentile, not the 5th. I called the doctor's office the next morning and finally got a call back late that evening from a woman at his office. I let her know what I found online and that maybe I had misheard the doctor, but could she double check. She said, oh yes, he's in the 5th percentile. I repeated what his weight was and his age and she said oh, here's the problem, we plotted him at 6 months old, he is actually the 50th percentile and everything is fine. And that was it. No I'm sorry, nothing. So, based on my overall lukewarm feelings about Dr. Grandaw, plus the mix up with his weight, we transferred our baby's care to a different doctor. read more

I cannot express how greatly I appreciate the care of a doctor that will actually hear you out and not exhibit an enormous ego that says their too big or mighty to listen. He is compassionate, kind, receptive and great with children. His knowledge seems solid and education obviously established. I highly suggest this Dr to anyone in the Redding area. read more

I'm glad he is good to his established patients... But as someone new to the area with a 14 month old who has a history of several major heart surgeries I have to say I'm rather dissapointed. He was totally professional and nice, but didn't seam to care about the severity of my son's history. Then the first time my kid actually gets sick he offers to admit him to hospital but wouldn't order any tests before hand. He ended up with pneumonia that we could treat at home, but we could have started treatment 2 days earlier if he would have ordered an outpatient chest xray. Bummer. read more

I have been going to dr Grandaw since I was a newborn. I am now 23! Yes I know I need to get a "regular" doctor, but until the day comes where he won't see me anymore I'll still see my pediatrician! Lol. He's so fantastic and such a wonderful doctor and person. My mom took my 5 siblings and myself here and he is always the first one I go to if anything is wrong! He's very soft spoken, great with kids (and adults lol) and just a very trustworthy doctor and person all around. I cannot say enough good things about him! He's just flat out awesome and should be recognized as the best Doctor/Pediatrician in Shasta County. Nothing but great experiences with him. read more
