As part of a wine tasting tour, we had the nicest experience at Peter Cellars. Peter is the winemaker and his wine is exceptional. I'm a Cab drinker, but we tasted his Rosé, two Pinots and a Cab. All were either gold or double gold award winners and each were outstanding! Probably the best wine we have ever had the pleasure of sampling. I ended up purchasing a nice bottle of Rosé to bring home. Although, I would have bought a bottle of each of the wines we tasted if I had room in my suitcase. Yes, they were that good! In addition, Peter is very knowledgeable about wine making in general and the Carneros region specifically. So, it was a bit of an education for me as I am fascinated by the process and love Sonoma. The wine tasting area is relaxing with a nice view of the vineyard at the front of the property and an organic farm at the back. An added bonus is that you get to enjoy the company of Peter's four white Labs: Harry, Meghan, Archie and Buttercup. They made the experience not only unique but extra special. We are looking forward to enjoying that bottle of Rosé with a nice Charcuterie and cheese board on a Spring evening sometime soon! read more

Of the three small wineries we visited in Sonoma and Napa on our guided tour, this was easily my favorite. Others were prettier or had better art, better views or chattier staff, but Peter Cellars had hands down the best wine. It is a lovely, small winery; so small that the wine produced there is only sold at the winery. So glad i am taking home a couple of bottles! read more

Arriving in Sonoma I was pretty overwhelmed with the big wineries all vying for attention. I was trying to find the best ones to visit but I didn't want the typical "here are 4 glasses let us know what you think". Honestly I chose to go to Peter Cellars because if the dogs (4 retrievers) but I had such a good time. We booked a wine tour that specialized in smaller, family oriented vineyards. This was my favorite. The wine-maker was authentic, knowledgeable and engaged with us on why he grew what he grew, the wines made and his approach. His tastings were generous, his fee waived if you bought wines, which we did, and he made our time their relaxed. I wish we had our mid-day meal there and had had a chance to walk some of the vineyard and learn more. I do not drink enough to join the wine clubs but will log on to order the chardonnay when he makes for his "mum". I am pleased to say we enjoyed the Rose wine on a hot LA day but packed one to take home - I will have to order more of that as well. read more

Five stars for this one man wine operation! This place is so different from the vineyards I have visited in the past with expansive lawns, barrel rooms, and wedding-worthy photos. A tasting at Peter Cellars is like opening up a bottle on your best friend's porch on a summer day. No fuss. No muss. Kicking off your shoes is highly recommended. The tasting room is a few feet away from Peter's home where his wife and two point five children live. They also have a dog. A German, French, and US flag flies in the background and the sounds of 50 Cent fill the air. I felt like I was in an episode of the Wonder Year....REMIX!!!! Besides his wife, kids, and dog, Peter's true love is red wines. We enjoyed four of his award winning wines and were absolutely floored by all of them. I wish I had more time here but since we were a part of a tour group our time was limited. Reservations for this vineyard is highly recommended. read more

UPDATE: after posting this review, the owner called me excessively and emailed. He apologized, explained further why he couldn't offer a tasting that day and offered a free tasting which I appreciated and thanked him for over email. OLD review: Made an appointment online, and got an email saying to call to confirm. When we called the first time we left a voicemail but didn't hear back so called a few days before and spoke to someone, gave our reservation ID and time and name were told we were all set. When we arrived the owner told us there were no appointments this afternoon because a "truck" was there so it wasn't safe (no further explanation) and there is no way we got a confirmation or talked to anyone because he was the only one there the day we called. He was extremely rude, didn't offer an alternative time or even apologize for the inconvenience despite the fact that we had a record of the call. It's kind of a small place off the main road place, so you'd think they would care about respecting customers. Wasn't expecting him to give us a tasting after he mentioned they were closed for the afternoon but the rudeness with which we greeted us and the way he vehemently insisted there's no way we talked to anyone despite the fact that we had an email and a record of the call was ridiculous. If you're looking for a pleasant tasting experience and a kind somm or to make an appointment and keep it, don't come here. read more

I originally visited Peter Cellars and thought the wine was amazing. We bought 3 bottles. After bringing them home, two of the bottles were also great. We were so excited to try the wine again, but one bottle had turned. I visited Peter Cellars shortly afterwards, bringing a friend for a tasting. After mentioning this, Peter offered no compensation or apologies. My friend and I bought 3 more bottles, assuming this was a fluke. Six months later, all 3 bottles had turned. I will never visit this establishment again. Poor customer service and wine that will not last. Disappointed. read more

Peter and his property are one of a kind! He started from scratch and educated himself about the craft and industry. He understands every aspect of making wine and the wine he creates definitely shows! Peter is reserved and humble. It's amazing how grounded he is due to the many accolades and awards he has! He has a bottle that has achieved a "double gold" award (that I bought today). A gold award entails a bunch of judges voting a wine through to become gold. Based off my understanding, a DOUBLE gold means every judge voting has given your wine the highest marks! His property is homey and comfortable. There is a beautiful patio with many tables and an authentic Sonoma vibe. It is absolutely serene. While my group and I did tastings, Peter allowed us to taste his brand new Cabernet Sauvignon. It was just as good as his award winning Pinot Noir, vintage 2013. I will definitely come back and highly recommend paying him a visit. You cannot buy his wine in normal retail stores, so do it while you're there !! read more

I seriously think people should try to fit Peter Cellars in their itinerary if they can. It is not a long, drawn-out tasting, and not a fancy, insta-worthy type of place like the other big vineyards. Probably will take ~45 min/1 hour max of your time. So what's so great about it? You will meet Peter, who has built the vineyard (also his home) literally from scratch ~15 years ago and does LITERALLY everything himself. For the most part, wineries in Napa/Sonoma are long-established and well-oiled 'machines' that has been producing wines for decades, and it is hard to understand how the wine we are drinking is actually produced. And so it is refreshing and very eye-opening to meet Peter and understand just the amount of hard work and patience it takes to bring about the wine we enjoy. And to realize he didn't come from viticulture background, built his own winery and business, and wins several awards - that is SO impressive! Definitely worth visiting and listening to his stories. His wines are excellent, too. I am drinking his 2013 Pinot Noir (Double Gold) as I am writing this. It is excellent wine, so I guess this review is bit biased ;-) read more

A wonderful and intimate place that puts out some really great wines. Chris had heard a podcast that highly recommended a stop by this place. We called ahead to book an appointment, especially since we were in the area on Labor Day weekend. They were kind enough to squeeze us in between parties. We get to the property and call in to have them buzz us in. The gate is lifted and you pull into the driveway. There is a house with a good-sized building and patio to the right, which is their tasting room. You feel like you are pulling into a friend's house, which happens to be surrounded by rows and rows of beautiful vines. We sat outside on the patio just soaking in the beauty. We were the only ones there because it was their breathing room between large parties. Lucy was our lovely guide through the tasting. The wines are excellent. They were definitely the top of our list for this trip. Peter himself came over later to talk to us and tell us about his wines and his history. Peter is a Brit who came over here to make the dream happen. It has been a lot of hard work, but the fruits of it all we get to enjoy and it is quite delicious! Lucy and Peter were both great to talk to. We also had Rupert their lovely wine dog at our feet. Such a relaxing, laid back time. I really wish we had gotten to spend more time there, but we were jumping between other appointments we made, so unfortunately had to move on. We immediately signed up for the wine club though and have been able to enjoy bottles all fall. Our first order came promptly after our trip, so we could continue on that "good vacation" high for a little bit longer. read more

My goodness, little did I think I would come across a rustic and down-to-earth winery way off the beaten path making such phenomenal wines! Peter Cellars came as a rave recommendation from a Sonoma native who apparently had dreams about the wines here after tasting them herself a while back. After tasting through the all-red portofolio, I now totally understand what she was talking about. The owner and winemaker, Peter Mauel, greeted us himself upon arrival and gave us a quick tour of the premises before seating us for our tasting. Things could not have been kept more real as the tasting room itself was quite literally a shack housing garden tools in addition to the line-up of wines on the counter. So awesome! Peter's estate pinot noir was simply stellar with the 2010 and 2011 vintages both being distinct yet fantastic in their own regard. The syrah, cabernet sauvignon and estate merlot were no exception, all possessing excellent depth and balance. And to round out the experience, Peter acted as a superb host telling us the story behind each wine as well as his own journey into winemaking with the utmost humility and plenty of humor. Regarding logistics, the nominal tasting fee of $15 is waived with the purchase of two bottles (one of my easiest decisions ever) and the wine club with several tiers is available for those interested. Stopped by here on a small group wine tour booked through Viator. This winery was small, quaint, and beautiful. We arrived in peak wine season and the owner himself greeted us, even though he has been working endless hours. As we sat in the owners garden, surrounded by olive trees and grape vines - we tasted 5 wines, receiving education along the way. We briefly saw the equipment used to produce his lovely wines. A real hidden gem in Sonoma. Beautiful and intimate property encircled by a gate that allows the Rupert the golden retriever to roam and greet guests. Peter himself poured the wine for us, and simply put, he is good at what he does. The wine is in a different league then most wineries I've visited in both Napa and Sonoma over the past five years. Small and homey, Peter Cellars was a wonderful find in Sonoma. Amongst the large tourist filled wineries, Peter Cellars was both excellent quality and personable. My personal favorites were the Rose and Merlot--both were unique in taste, slightly edgier and earthier than most, but in a refreshing way. Their outdoor patio was a great place to kick back, relax, and watch a few bocce ball games. Also, who wouldn't love to play with Rupert, the winery dog?! I highly recommend the Rose (many of the guys in the group loved it too...) and bring some snacks to pair with the wine as there aren't stores or shops nearby. I'll definitely be back! read more

Lalo, was very knowledgeable about the wine making process and introduced all the wines to us. The atmosphere was really nice and relaxing. We also enjoyed talking to Peter for a little bit, which was a treat since it is not often that you get to chat with the winemaker himself. Oh and the wine was fantastic! Had the pleasure to step in Peter's tasting room a year ago in a trip to Sonoma with my boyfriend. Just found this review was never submitted, but actually wrote this on our way home. I visited Peter Cellars with a bachelorette party on a Saturday, and it was a truly wonderful experience. Usually wine tasting on weekends can be really hectic and crowded, but we felt a million miles away at our tasting on the patio outside his adorable wine facility. The family atmosphere was wonderful--we even got to meet some of his kids (and the winery dog)! We really enjoyed the wines--some of the other reviews say he only does reds but I know I also tasted a really delicious Chardonnay! You have to make an appointment, but we messaged Peter on Friday night and heard back on Saturday morning saying we could come, so it's a very easy process.
