I did the three week board and train and I picked up a very different dog than I dropped off. I live in the Portland area and I now walk my dog in the woods off leash, in the park and neighborhood off leash, and I don't get lectured!! I get looks of admiration when my dog walks right past at my heel. This is the freedom and the connection my dog and I were looking for. There is nothing like it.

Matt Luchsinger is a gifted dog trainer whose methods rely on positive reinforcement and discipline to bring out the best in any dog. Matt's classes are equal parts talking/discussion and implementation. Everything Matt does is rooted in the psychology of the dog and you leave with a much better understanding of what makes your dog tick and how to motivate your dog to listen and behave is a way that will keep him safe and loved in the real world. Matt's approach is no-nonsense and his explanations and anecdotal examples make it easy to understand his principles. If you take a class here, you and your dog will be put through your paces until you both become comfortable with the techniques. Matt is a great teacher - a good psychologist for both dogs and people. Watching him transform an unfocused dog into an attentive student is inspirational and makes you, as the dog's owner, want to form a tight bond with your dog. Matt also has a way of imbuing tentative owners with the skills necessary to establish themselves as the boss. We are lucky to have this level of dog training available in the Gorge. I highly recommend NWB Dogs.

Matt was incredible with her and Apollo the older German Sheppard rescue I have, loved him in a minute. He was fair and upfront with the price, no extra cost for training tools, my dogs loved Matt and his team so much that for the first time I felt comfortable leaving them instead of home with a dog sitter, we left them at NW Balanced when we left on vacation, I came back and dogs where happy and relaxed (and better trained) My experience in 2017, 2018 and this year has been extraordinary, my dogs have dietary requirements and sometimes suffer from anxiety, Matt accommodated all their food needs plus there was no anxiety in his care, could not recommend NW Balanced enough-to all my friends and their beloved dogs.

Weekly training with me and my dog for $1200. 2. Train and board with Matt for 3 weeks for $4000. I told him I would let him know. I emailed him several weeks later to let him know I was choosing the $1200 route and was excited to begin. Mariam (girlfriend) emails me back to say that Matt is only interested in training him for $4000. I said we didn't want to spend that much and we're choosing the other package. She emailed back to say that if we can "get the funds" ($4000) to let them know and Matt will be happy to train him. Very condescending. I asked why I was given 2 options at the evaluation and now that has all changed?! I wouldn't even know the other option existed if he hadn't told me. She answered she didn't know, but she is letting me know what Matt is now saying. Matt never called me to explain. Bad business!

There were pros and cons to the facility…read more Pros: -This is a big space and depending on what type of needs you have, you could have 4 big rings or 6 small rings. -The people who manage the space, when I saw them, were friendly. -The bathrooms were clean. - There was bottled drinking water available. - There was a classroom area, we didn't use it, but it's great that it is available. - there is a huge outdoor area, nicely grassed for walking and playing with your dog on breaks. - well appointed with tons of dog equipment. Cons: - I'm probably going to say this one several times. The floors have a black mat overlay, which is better to walk on than concrete. BUT, I had to wash my white dogs EVERY DAY. Their paws, legs, skirting, and faces were dark grey. - The black flooring turned my pants black wherever it touched. - The dogs are breathing that black material as well as ingesting it when there is a treat that touches the ground. - One dog in my course left with Bronchitis. - we were wearing masks and still had black residue in our noses. Onward from how much I hated the flooring material. - I spent a shit ton of money for a 7 day training. During most of it there was banging and drilling and all sorts of noise because the facility didn't plan around the training, but rater opted to have maintenance or whatever done, during operating hours and during a time they had rented out the space. At times it was almost impossible to hear above the racket. - I felt this decision was incredibly disrespectful to our trainer and to those of us there for the training. I drove in for the training, as mentioned, paid a fair amount, and what I discovered is that I will never come back to this facility for another training, as the pros do not exceed the cons.
