::This review is about the "Vetco" vaccination clinic:: Been going to my current vet for almost 20 years. They were bought by private equity a couple years back and since the prices have gone to the stratosphere. Last year's vaccination appointment was just shy of $600. Kiss my patootie, respectfully. The gag is Petco is ALSO owned by private equity but I imagine its large portfolio of stores makes cheap vaccines possible. For a neighborhood vet, it just ruins everything. ::throws phone:: I googled low cost clinics and found out that Petco does them. I needed an appointment soon so my son could go to daycare next week while I'm onsite at work. This was the only location where I could get in before next week. Been in NJ 35 years and never heard of this town. But, at $195 for ALL his shots and heartworm test without a mandatory exam (that's how the vet gets you), I embraced the hour long road trip. The setup: -Book the appointment online at the Petco website -Store is in a strip mall - vax clinic is on the left past the registers. -The providers get on the floor with your dog, talk sweetly to them, and work efficiently. Heartworm results come back in 10 minutes. Pros: -Easy booking, low stress, clear communication -Summary of services, Rx, and rabies vaccine emailed to you during the visit -You do not have to book a vet exam to be vaccinated Possible Cons: -This is a store with people and pets. If your pet is antsy you may want to book during the week rather than on a weekend to minimize distractions and anxiety. ---------- Great experience! Get the jab! We don't need billionaires! Been going there since my dog was 6 months old first haircut was with Alyia after the haircut she made some comments that I disliked and said I was going to try a different groomer. Chose Nelson and he was great. Unfortunately, he had surgery. Was unable to do his haircut so they rebooked it three times and back with Alyia. From the minute, I walked in here, came the excuses. At this point, I was very frustrated. I asked to speak with the manager. What a waste of time manager again acted like it was nothing. Once you get rescheduled three times and this is your fourth time walking in and they find every excuse I think I have the right to be a little upset . Never had a problem with Nelson. Long-time loyal customer of PetCo...15+ years and several different locations. So I am very knowledgeable of their services and their customer service standards. Since moving to this area and visiting this store...I've been disappointed each time! Especially when trying to schedule a grooming session for my dog. It got so bad, that I decided to drive 1.5 hours to my previous store and let them perform her grooming, because I lost confidence in this store and couldn't risk my dog being neglected during her grooming session. Definitely ZERO STARS for service from the top to the bottom of their staff. The place feels abandoned and appears the workers don't want to be there. That is not what you say to a customer that went in to get live crikets . He also started talking about maintenace on a lizard and he had no idea what he was talking about . Plus they do grooming and once a month they have a vet that comes in to do chipping and vaccinations in dogs and cats. Ever since we adopted our dog, it seems I spend more time shopping for pet items than shopping for myself. I prefer shopping online or at local pet stores as much as I can, but there are times where I just have to go to someplace with a bigger selection of items. I've gone to several different Petco locations, but this one is by far my favorite. They seem to have a much larger selection of my dog's favorite things than the other stores I've been to. See, my dog is... picky. She has a pancreas problem that requires her to eat a very low-fat diet. We order her prescription kibble online since it is $$$ to get at the vet, and isn't carried in regular stores. Despite the massive coin I'm dropping on her kibble, she turns her nose up at it. Yes, a creature that enjoys sniffing butts finds her kibble to be unpalatable. Because of this, we mix in wet food that she finds more appetizing in order to whet her appetite. Blue Buffalo is our brand of choice, and things went well when we started mixing in their healthy weight wet food. Before long, her discerning tastes got the better of us, and she got bored with her meals. To combat this, we have had to change up her flavor of wet food every other day or else she will go on hunger strikes to show her displeasure. Luckily, Petco carries several flavors of BB wet food that is below the 4% fat content that we need to keep her at. Every few weeks, I find myself going through their shelves to buy a few dozen cans at a time to keep Her Highness satisfied. Since I try to cluster my errands together, I sometimes end up at other Petco locations to do my shopping, but they never have all the varieties I can find at this store. Every time I've been in (including immediately after picking up our precious pooch from Eleventh Hour Rescue, which has a location in the same shopping plaza), the staff has been incredibly helpful. They often commiserate with me about picky-eater dogs, and never make me feel like I'm doing something weird or bad for my dog. If there is something I am looking for but don't see, they offer to check to see if they have it elsewhere in the store. read more

Walked the store and picked up the things I needed, cat food, some toys for the cats, and some filter and aquarium supplies. I found some fish I would like to get. I spent ten minutes waiting for anyone to check on the aquarium section and no one showed. I spent ten more minutes actively walking the store trying to get help only to have everyone who worked there scurry by without making eye contact and ignoring me asking if someone could come to the fish department. Ten minutes later after putting everything I would have bought back I walked into their competitors a few miles down Rt 46 and had someone immediately offer to help me. my dog had an issue with them, crapped all over the table. i took my dog to the vet and looked for answers, vet said the dog missed me and put him on a mild sedative. it worked, took my dog there for about the next year, commented each time i dropped him off how i just gave it to him. well, i went there sunday for his appointment, mentioned i just gave it to him and was told they could not take him. i was like this is the same thing i have done for a year now. i was told first that she was never aware my dog was on them. i told her she knew because i told her each time. then she changes the story to its a new policy. thats ok, they missed the stuff in his hair i pointed out each time. they are way over priced for services and goods. my dog and me will be a lot happier elsewhere. only a matter of time until they close their doors for good, too many people feel the same way read more

I take my 2 chihuahuas to get their nails clipped here. They always do a great job. I've never made an appointment, they just accept my dogs as walk-ins. They are always nice and hospitable. I like to tip them to show my appreciation, for as I read these reviews, these groomers put up with and witness a lot of abuse & frankly some of these complainers should not have dogs if they can not properly take care of their pets. It's not the groomers fault that these dogs are brought in neglected, matted & mangy, they do what's in the animal's best interest, not what's fashionably pleasing to the eye. I called to alert the the store manager who said if I found the price cheaper on the Petco site they would honor it, but otherwise no, they didn't price match. This place is ok, I have stopped here for crickets a few times, I was discouraged by the condition on some of the reptiles they had. They were way under nourished. I don't mind getting cricket here every now and then but I wouldn't pick up a rep from them. read more

I went to the local Succusauna store today to pick up the last stock of a canned dog food that was held for me, as after ordering online and waiting 6 days, I uncovered Petco was out of stock (this itself was frustrating, as the company never let me know). The employee at the store looked annoyed the moment I walked in and inquired about the food. He said he could not hear me, and seemed annoyed I was wearing a mask. I repeated my request, and he got the cans. 12 of about 16 were part of a case, but I was not getting any case discount. I requested to look them over, as often the cans I receive have been dented at the bottom within the casing. He insisted there was no need to look. I said I would prefer to do it and will only take a matter of minutes. Keep in mind, there was no other customer around needing attention. He again said it wasn't necessary and started to ring up the order. I stated again that I would like to quickly look at the cans. He looked ready to blow his lid. Over this request??? At this point he was continuing to ring the order, had not let me look over the cans, and made an incomplete statement which I believe was "you can..." and I repeated back as a question "I can what?" and he literally stormed off. I kid you not. After about 5 minutes another employee came over and also tried to tell me there was no need to look at the cans. That dented cans were safe. I mean, really? Finally I did get a look and all cans were good. I asked what was up with the other employee and he said oh nothing, he was fine. I said no, it wasn't fine. I stated he had stormed off, and that isn't fine. To which he kept denying it happened. At that point, I said I'm done with Petco, and I am. read more

Took my dog to Succasunna Petco for grooming twice and both times have been very positive experiences. My golden retriever is not a fan of nail trimming but all his nails were pedicure perfect. When you pick up your dog you get a report card and can see all the "treatments" your dog receives. This overly shaggy guy got a lite trim, much needed bath, ears cleaned and a blueberry facial. He was so destressed when he got home he took a nap. Stephanie, his groomer was lovely throughout the entire experience. read more

I am disgusted, furious, in disbelief. my boyfriend and I have been to this Petco plenty times befor, saw dead fish, a dead chameleon drying up in its tank, and now a sick bearded dragon. This bearded dragon we got for a discount even though in its condition should have been handed to us. Extreme dehydration and its eyes would not open. We got her on Friday night, it is now Monday night, she has passed away. We did everything we could in our power to help her and I'm glad we gave her a few more loving days in her life. I am super disappointed in their effort for pet care. Their reptiles don't have proper light, they have baby dragons with sand substrate, and bigger dominant ones with babies. I want to add that this baby beardie we got was only 4.6 grams and should not have been available for sale. I really wish they would put more effort in. If I ever go back it woll be to check on these poor creatures, but I will not be buying and supporting their business anymore. read more

Rude staff. We brought a friends 5 mo old puppy we are watching in with us to buy some dog food. We had let him out to use the bathroom before we went so we hoped he wouldn't have to go again. Unfortunately he had an accident in the store. The staff seemed very annoyed and were constantly glaring at each other while we cleaned up his mess. As far as shopping goes.... they are middle if the road. Sean has been the only associate I have interacted with that was both quick to approach and eager to assist in pointing me in the right direction for the products I was looking for. We have been bringing our puppy here for puppy training with Nikki (who has been perfectly fine) for the past 5 weeks and I don't think we will be returning or signing up for any future classes. The training pen has had the same clumps of shed hair in it from the very first appointment 5 WEEKS AGO! I even mentioned it to Nikki at our last appointment but alas, it was STILL THERE today. My son comes out of the training with the dog covered in hair..... from ANOTHER DOG! totally disgusting and shows the level of cleanliness of the store. I understand that dogs shed but I don't think it unreasonable to expect the pen to be cleaned.... I mean, ONCE in the past 5 weeks at least. Yesterday I entered the store to buy supplies for our new family bunny rabbit. I never owned a rabbit before so I did have some questions, I spoke with a women named Amy who of course works at the store. She helped me more than I ever expected to be helped that day, she was so knowledgeable and gave me so much information not only on the supplies I would need but also how to care for our new rabbit in the best way we can. Stephanie has been grooming my dog Luke for years and she's amazing! Luke loves seeing her which makes me so happy since that means she treats him with kindness when I am not there. It also makes it easier for me to leave without him trying to follow me! When I pick him up he always looks beautiful and smells delicious, my kids and my husband can't stop petting and smelling him when he gets home! I came here to purchase a nail clipper and if I am to rate them based on the extra money that I spent - they would get 5 stars. I purchased a Star Wars Chewbacca dog harness for my dog - as you can imagine I had no intention of originally purchasing this. The store is smaller than your usual petco. No adoptable pets and a small selection of pretty much everything. Good news tho - they had plenty of what I needed. They have a great selection of food and bones and toys. Its my go to store as its in my neighborhood. Great selection of pet supplies, I always end up spending too much money here. Lots of variety in dog treats and toys. As far as the grooming, I don't get all the bad reviews. I've been bringing my dogs here for about 5 years intermittently when I need a last minute appointment and never had an issue with the haircut they received. And when you drop the dog off, they clearly point out that if your dog is matted (I had a rescue that was) they will have to shave them and have you sign a form. Everything is always communicated upfront so there are no surprises. Most employees are pretty friendly and helpful. I am knocking one star off however, for price. Horrible experience with a Blue Buffalo rep that couldn't seem to mind her own business. Rep approached me to tell me how I "can't" train my dog on a transitional leash. Makes sense that she's not educated in training techniques, as she sells a horrible dog food mindlessly. After walking out upset and not purchasing anything, I took my business across the street to the locally owned store that actually sells decent dog food! The level of service here is 1, They have a decent variety of dog food and toys, but don't expect any help. The manager there today refused to open the box for a crate I was purchasing! I needed it open because I was bringing a dog to an adoption event and had no way to opening it at the event. I will stop shopping at this store for sure. What a horrible experience. I came to this Petco location to get my little puppy her first haircut. I explicitly explained to the woman handling my puppy that I did NOT want her to receive a short cut. If she had any matted hair, I would like a phone call to discuss my options. The groomer said she understood and promised to try her best to avoid cutting it short, but did point out one small area of matted hair. Fair enough. 3 hours later.....having received no phone call, I returned with a friend to pick up my puppy. Oh the horror. Not only was the groomer STILL cutting the dog's hair, but she was SHAVING HER!!!!!!!! I was livid. Of course, yes, I yelled. I shouted. I made a friggin scene. Instead of acknowledging the miscommunication and the groomer's clear mistake, another groomer with no knowledge of the situation chimed in and threatened to hit my friend! The manager finally got involved and had to physically restrain the other groomer. I am absolutely appalled at this sort of behavior from a person who works in customer service. While it sucks my puppy got shaved and received a bad first haircut, that's not the point. Hair will grow back. The point is the blatant lack of respect that I received from the people who work at this Petco. Threatening someone is just completely and totally out of line and frankly, will not be tolerated. Long story short: I brought in a brand new puppy for a short hair cut and left with a shaved, and shivering naked 3 lb dog who I now have to walk in the freezing cold winter air. i love shopping at petco and i get everything there for my guinea pigs.. but there is this one lady named pat in particular that is extremely rude and seems like she doesn't want to be there. i got my last guinea pig there and she handled him like he was a stuffed animal; not supporting his legs and just letting him dangle in the air. i also went there today to price match my items and she rolled her eyes because it seemed to be too much work for her to do. I took my puppy there once when she was about 6 months old and they were kind. They didn't do much grooming , bu that was OK because my puppy was very skittish about the whole procedure. The price was reasonable. I now have 2 dogs- my now 10 month old puppy and my in laws' 10 yo bichon. We have all had a rough fall since my father in law died and the dogs were definitely in need of grooming. The bichon had a few mats on his ears and near his tail. We discussed how he should be groomed and they said that they would leave his head round (like a bichon is supposed to look), but they shaved him completely. He is pretty much bald - including his head, and it is December in NJ. Maybe I misunderstood how short they would cut the hair on his body, but the groomer is the one who said that she would leave his head round. Now the puppy, when we got there she was freaked out because they were having an adoption event and there were a lot of barking, crying dogs. She had some mats on her ears , tail area and under arms. We talked about the fact that she was already very stressed by the noise and that maybe they would just do her ears, tail area, and paws. They left her for 3 hours before they did anything and then they called me and told me that she 'was seriously matted' and that she needed to be shaved. I reminded them that we had discussed just doing a few areas and they told me that they could not wash her because it was against their policy to wash such a seriously matted dog. I told them that I did not understand why they could not take care of her face, ears, nails and tail area.and they became very condescending and rude and loud enough that my son heard her her on the phone across the room (not on speaker) She put on a manager who , in a rather rude tone , asked me how I was planning on taking care of the mats. When I responded that I would cut them myself. She told me that the puppy would look much prettier if they did it. Well 1. it is December and too cold for a shaved dog and 2 after looking at the bichon, I seriously doubt that she would be prettier. 2 hours later they were done and my son and daughter went to pick up the dogs. ( ages 25 & 21) When they got there, my son asked to speak to the manager, the grooming employee immediately became defensive . My son asked to speak the manager in private and he refused. when my son explained what had happened, the grooming employee started shouting and said that 'she was 'practically a vet' as far as her dog knowledge went. She told my son and daughter that they 'knew nothing about dogs' . (Since she never asked me, or my son or daughter what we knew about dogs, I don't know how she could say this) They felt that she was accusing them of dog abuse. At that point the manager agreed to speak with my son in private. As far as the rest of the store goes, I have never had a problem , the employees have always been very helpful. I hate to leave low ratings for pet stores that sell saltwater, but this place consistently sells diseased fish and withering inverts. Ok fine, the animal comes in with parasites/damages, and instead of offering a discount for hobbyists who are willing to try to reverse their condition, they refuse to acknowledge any thing is wrong and insist it's either normal or came in that way (it's not their fault so they shouldn't do anything about it, right?). So the animal winds up dying instead because of stubbornness to acknowledge an issue. Just today, I noticed all the clownfish riddled with Brooklynella and a Coral beauty that will be dead by morning. The manager of the department told me the bleached white mini carpet anemone was not bleached, but came in that way 4 months ago. Some anemones are white naturally, mini carpets are not one of them. Of course, always quarantine, but take extra precautions if you make any live saltwater purchased here. I really hope improvements are made; the company needs to grant extra training for the staff and upgrades to the department to bring them up to par.
