Absolutely terrible experience at Petco. Went in wanting to buy ONE neon tetra to go with the fish I already have, and instead of helping me, the employee immediately started interrogating me about my tank setup like I was applying for a mortgage. Meanwhile, half the tanks in the store had dead fish floating around, so maybe focus on your own fish care first. The woman working there insisted I "needed" at least 6 neon tetras, even after I explained I already have 3 black tetras and the neon tetras I already own literally came from THEIR store. Felt less like actual advice and more like a push to sell me another 3-5 overpriced $15 fish I didn't want or need. On top of that, the employees acted like customers were interrupting their social hour. Barely helpful, rude attitudes, and completely ignorant customer service. If you hate helping people that much, maybe retail and animal care isn't the job for you. I'll be taking my business elsewhere from now on. read more

It's my son's 12th birthday & he begged me for another hamster, the 1 we had for years passed away over a year ago, so I said yes. We had everything at home, all I needed to buy was food & fluff stuff! He takes his time & he & his sister pick the hamster, I go & ask the woman working to help us & she asks about the habitat we have, I explain that we have a HUGE habitat at home & how I've done extensive research on hamsters & I'm aware they need deep burrows etc. She refuses to sell it to me, which I thought was extreme, since the conditions in which they are kept in the store are horrid. I go outside & call another Petco asking if its allowed & they tell me that no, she shouldn't refuse to sell me a hamster! For all she knows a customer can tell her what she wants to hear, I actually showed her the home i bought from petco btw, but now she said because it's wire cage so I explain that I'll make a habitat with a bin like she explained & still she openly refused to sell him to us, it's getting later, I had to drive 25 miles to nashua on empty & finally got him a hamster which btw, is living large. But who does she think she is? She also walked away from me in mid-sentence to help another customer who had interrupted us, and never came back over! read more

After going back to the store I handed the rock back , the employee said she was the manager named started with a A . She sated this rock has been here since I started working here. She took it . Had a very unpleasant experience visiting the store with my wife and daughters today. An employee by the name Alicia or Alisha who claimed to be the manager, refused to sell us a hamster because apparently we did not meet her personal standards on having the proper enclosure (a ridiculously large glass tank, a specific running wheel, and bedding only recommended by her). We've owned hamsters before and have all been well taken care of. Along with the purchase of a hamster, we were taking a decent sized cage, bedding and food. Arrived at 3:30 and was told you're 30 minutes late, No one said hello. I thought my appointment was at 3:30 not 3 pm. Obviously a mixup. I was continually chastised for being 30 minutes late and that she had taken another dog. It was a misunderstanding but the grooming tech continued to attack me, I asked if she could take my dog and if she could be more personable, She said she was being personable. By that point I was angry and left saying you've lost a customer. When I got to my car, I called to speak to management. There was no manager onsite. I've been a loyal Petco customer for decades. Quite frankly, I don't want a person so rude and aggressive grooming my sweet pup. Will never shop at Petco again. read more

Took my small dog to be groomed and requested unscented shampoo. There are asthmatics in the family and certain scents cause an asthma attack. When I picked my dog up, sure enough he had a perfume smell. I had to rewash him when I got him home. My request was totally disregarded. Find another place. read more

This is by far the worst Petco store I have ever stepped foot in. I ordered food for my dog online for pick up and apparently they handed MY order to someone else the day after I ordered it. When I called the store, the only response the manager 'Alicia' had was , they handed the order to 'someone' and we can't do anything about it. The manager admitted that the employee, whoever handed the item to that 'someone', never checked for proper identification at pick up. The manager stated that it is the store policy to check ID at pick up. I asked if they checked ID at the time of pick up and she said no, and then she decided to change her response by saying the ID is not needed if they have the order number. Each order has its own number, so how could they have given it to someone other than myself? I asked the manager nicely to find other options to resolve the matter, either provide a refund or replace the items that I ordered that they gave to someone else. The answer I received was NO and NO and that's that. The manager 'Alicia' is extremely rude with all of her responses and did not provide any additional resources that I could reach out to resolve the issue. I called customer service and explained the situation and was told that I would be contacted by a district manager within 24-48hrs. It's been well over 48+ hours and nobody reached out for a follow up. Petco is full of lies and should be ashamed of themselves. I will never recommend Petco to anyone. Jill (purple hair gm) was working the register and refused to give me the disability service animal discount that they have because I dont 'look disabled' then she went on demanding i tell her my disability which is ILLEGAL! We tried calling the store for a district manager assistance but she of course answered without saying her name and decided to hangup and is now ignoring the calls everyone sends in. My dog Jack and I go to this Petco every so often to get big 50lb bags of Iams red bag. Jack eats alot and if he is a good boy he gets to pick out a treat in the rawhide section (its so hard to choose!!). The store is very clean and the staff seem quite knowledgeable. I do have one peeve about this place however. They have a ridehide "bar" which is sort of like a salad bar. The sign above reads $2.99 lb on bar and on the next bar it reads $2.99 and in very small print (per 1/4 lb) which is very misleading to all canines who can not read and many of their owners as well!! I've been going to Petco for my dog's grooming for years now, and we really, really loved Christina while she was there. So we ended up continuing to stay with Petco since it's nearby and convenient. That's when my dogs started to see Megan C at Petco Salem, NH. One of them, mostly because the newest is a pup, At first, let me tell you how great we thought she was. Nice, friendly, and approachable. She greeted the dogs very nicely, made eye contact, had conversation, and made my one who gets the works done plus a hair cut look so clean, shiny, and smelling great. She would come out with handkerchiefs or flowers on her collar. Well, that all changed at the very last appointment we had. I walked in with no Hi, how are you, there was no greeting my dog like usual. No eye contact. It was a quick; she'll be done in 2-3 hours, and couldn't get my dog out back fast enough. It was very weird, like a different person. I was instantly not a fan and pretty much just wanted to take my dog back. I came back three hours later; my paper was on the counter to go pay. When I come back, it was beyond awkward. There's no scarf or flower. No, thank you, and have a wonderful day. She couldn't wait to get my poor dog and myself out of there. She quickly turned her back and walked away. I get in the car, and my husband and one of my sons say, What is that smell? My dog came out of there looking like she was not bathed because she stunk, was poorly shaved, not like usual, not brushed out, and you could see hair all over her. She didn't look like she recieved her usual service. It was by far the most disappointing service. I've always been a very good customer and tipper, and then to have this happen is unacceptable.. We went right home and gave our dog, who was just groomed, a bath. The water was dirty; there was matted hair all in the water, and it was just plain gross. My poor dog. I spend $110.00 plus another 20+ everytime for this service to give it to someone that I thought was a professional dog groomer and clearly who thinks it's ok to wear there emotions or whatever it was on her sleeve while working in customer service. If you can't go into work as a mature professional, then I don't know what to tell you.. I'm just so confused by the weird treatment from her. Just so rude. The only thing I can think of that is still confusing as to why we received this unnecessary treatment is that a few weeks ago, I had no idea because I'd never run into the problem of my dog having to wait to get groomed 48 hours after her rabies shot. That's fine. It is the first time I ever heard of it, she had had it the morning before the appointment that day. I was never aware that a dog couldn't get groomed after that. Only because it's just never happened in that order before for me. So then the manager was saying, Oh no, we can't do it; we can't do her today. Yes, I was bummed. Was I rude to anyone? NO! Had I even had an ounce of communication with Megan C that day? No! She was grooming another dog at the time. The manager tried rebooking me, but I couldn't stay to figure out a day. I had to go to other appointments, so I just said, You know what? Forget it; I'll just call and I left. I had to be right out the door. I have a very tight schedule. It takes a lot for me to be rude and to feel strong enough to write a complaint that I never thought I'd have to write. So, going forward, Megan C and Petco will lose my business that I have given for years, and there will be no recommendations for your location or company period. read more

I purchased a fish stand, fish tank kit, gravel & gold fish food granules for my grandson for Christmas. My grandson decided on fresh water tropical fish for his tank, which we set up yesterday! So we took the unopened gold fish food to the store where it was purchased! They told me that it was purchased in November and was over 30 days old and refused to reimburse me or even give me a store credit!! It was a CHRISTMAS gift!! Theres no Christmas return policy???? This place is a disaster. We went to this location last week and waited for over 20 minutes to get help over in the fish area before having to ask for help. Finally, a woman came over that seemingly runs the fish department. The first thing she said to us was if you're going to buy fish here, I need to know how many gallons you have, how many fish you have in there and what kind of fish are in your tank. This was so intrusive, unbecoming and rude. First off, we are pretty seasoned fish owners. We have have experience with salt water and fresh water. We stopped in to get 2-3 fish (tetras of some sort) for my son's fresh water tank. I understand she thinks she specializes in aquariums and wants to make sure that these fish are well cared for. Honestly, I appreciate her concern for the animals but to talk to us like we are stupid was so insulting. Her banter continued and needless to say refused to sell us fish. I took my Golden Retriever, Kate to Pepi for her "1st" Spa Day. Prior to dropping off my baby girl, we spoke about what I wanted and she gave feedback, clearly knowing more than I do for grooming dogs. She was very upfront about the costs, did not try to sell me anything that I didn't need to have done; which is a rare thing these days... sadly. I had great experience with groomers Megan and Maria. The manager, however, is very rude. I had an appointment schedule for a bath and was told when I got there that it would be a couple hour because the scheduled groomer was very busy. I asked why when I had an appt scheduled, and was told those appt times aren't really valid, that the dogs are put in rotation. So my dog got washed and was put into a kennel to await her turn. I was very upset with this and told them I would never come back. The manager said "that's fine" and when I left I heard the groomer offer to bring my dog out to work on her and put the other dog in the kennel. The manager said, "No need. I'm not worried about it." There were other words said that I won't mention here. No wonder my dog has become more and more scared to be left at this grooming place. I will refer to others' reviews before I try another place. I made an appointment for my dog to be groomed, and got scheduled-in the same day. That was greatly appreciated. My dog, Nina was serviced right away. The lady said she would take a little over an hour, and it was exactly that. I was quite picky about how I wanted my dog to be groomed, I explained to the girl in detail. I have got my dog groomed there before, but I suggest you ask for Danielle. By far; the best hair cut and grooming I've gotten for Nina. So good, I had to call Petco back and ask who serviced Nina so that I can ask for her every time. Fair to say I will not schedule an appointment for Nina without Danielle doing it. She was great! Went there the other night and asked an. employee if a baby banded gecko was under weight was told that no he's just a baby was there at around closing time I returned the next day around 3 o'clock to his tank was emptied the tag changed and I asked if there was any adoption of a gecko and there was none. Now I just want to preface this with my rating is solely in regards to our personal experiences with their groomers. When we use the store itself it's simply to walk in and buy more dog food or toys which doesn't require any interaction from the staff. So from the reviews I've read here it sounds like you need advice in the store or possibly buying a pet, this may not be the place for you. But once again we've never had a good/bad experience it the store itself. As for the groomers we have been here 3 times and each time have had a great experience. One thing to note is be sure to bring all your up-to-date vet info. We didn't the first time so we had to come back, but that would be the same for any reputable groomer. On the phone everyone has been very friendly and in the salon itself there are always several young energetic pet loving groomers waiting. The first two times was a man this last time it was several friendly woman. Our dog comes back smelling and looking great and they even gave us a seasonal gift back with extra scent spray, treats, and teeth cleaning treat. For the pet spa (or whatever it is called) which does the full grooming on our short haired dog, plus nails and such was about $55 I think. We use to pay a little more at local shop in Mass. While maybe a few of the reviewers here got stuck with a bad/unfriendly groomer so far we have never experienced anyone like that at this particular Petco. If we do, we will be sure to update this review accordingly. read more

In regards to the grooming - took my dog three times. The first two times I was really happy and so was my dog, he was beautiful and his coat looked healthy. The third time I picked him up and quickly noticed he wasn't cut as short as normal, which I thought was odd for summer but not enough for me to bother saying anything. When we got in the car I immediately noticed my dog could not stop itching or biting his back/bum. I reached over to help him itch awkward spots and clumps of hair (handfuls) were falling out. He had hair all in his mouth from biting at the uncomfortable areas, and his shedding was insane. When I called grooming to ask what they think happened (allergic reaction?), the response was "I don't know because I did brush him" ... Right. And when speaking to the manager, all he could say was "well what do YOU think it was?" Unbelievable. I had to give my dog weekly treatment baths myself and Benadryl for over a week to make him as comfortable as possible to recover from this. There is no excuse for any dog to come out of grooming is such discomfort and I highly advise to never take your dog here. They are uneducated in their work and unhelpful. my boyfriend and I went today 03/23/24 in the afternoon at petco 92 Cluff Crossing Rd, Salem, NH 03079, we went to look at the fish section to buy, we asked a guy who was sitting there for information on which fish to buy for our aquarium (he advised the fish) out of nowhere a girl who was sitting (wearing a pincer working with a fish jar also worked there) she was super ANTIPATHY AND ARROGANT entered our conversations, if we had asked her for help ok but we didn't, she came in talking about the fish, so far so good, when I got close to another aquarium to see the bigger fish, she was snorting as if my presence bothered her (she had never seen it before), I wanted to buy the bigger fish, but every time my boyfriend I asked the boy for help, she again entered the conversation with a very ARROGANT tone of voice, we had already understood the boy to explain, but my boyfriend needed to repeat it to me because I don't speak English but Portuguese and I needed him to translate, and the more he She talked to me, but she entered the conversation with a very arrogant and ignorant tone, and only told us to look at other fish because those weren't for our aquarium (With a VERY ARROGANT appearance, voice and tone)!! We no longer buy the fish because of the service, and we also had friends who wanted to buy, but we recommended other establishments because of the way we were treated, at no time were we rude, to work with customers you have to have friendliness and patience to know how to explain, I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THERE AND MUCH LESS TO HAVE IT HOW IT WOULD WORK. read more

SO Unprofessional at this store. Groomers don't answer phones or call back clients so don't bother calling. I couldn't book appointment online because my account was supposedly locked. No notification- nothing. When I brought it to the attention of the manager he explained that I wasn't allowed to come back due to 3 no shows and 3 cancellations. When I asked where it states this policy - he said that it was on the receipt and then LIED that he didn't say that when I asked him during our follow up to see a receipt that states this. I will take accountability for my no shows, but no one gave me a warning after two that this was the policy. Cancelling an appointment should have no negative effect on a customer if the customer is giving advance notice to let them aware of why I can't come. Two of the times I had COVID and was in quarantine and couldn't leave my house. Manager Rob was amazing and helpful but the General manager- Tim was extremely rude. I can't believe that he is in charge. I hope someone reads this and actually makes changes to this store because you will continue to lose business the way it is run now. read more

I met the District Manager at this store her name was Ellen Davignon. She was rough and not polished as one would have thought for good customer service. A little on the abrasive side and very short tempered with little patience when I asked about their dog training program. As she turned her back on me and walked away, I asked where the lady's room was and she pointed to the back of the store and said, "follow me" That made me feel uncomfortable, but I made it. The cashiers were nice and I thought they should go for District Manager, go figure? They would have done a better job than Ellen, that's for sure. I can't say much but I was an employee herw, but I left due to personal issues. I used to work at a petco beforehand, but this one made me sad. I was hired as an aquatics specialist only to be put on cashier alk the time. The tanks were filthy, the lizards mostly all died because they didn't know anything about them. Most people who work there only have dog and cats and no animal experience except for a select few. The fish guy mike is awesome. He knows what he's talking about when its fish. He's a good guy and I suggest him to any beginner. The store itself is old needs to be updated and cleaned entirely. I'm just happy I don't work there anymore. Grooming: I brought in two Golden Retrievers on Friday morning without an appointment to Petco in Salem NH. These dogs of 6 and 9 years old have NEVER been groomed. They seriously look homeless. They have long gross hair, smell, mats, nails 3 inches long and paws with hair growing off of them so long you could braid it.... Yes these are my dogs and I wash them and trim them once a year. I brush them only once a month or less. My rating as an owner is zero stars. However the groomers at Petso in a few hours and at a fair price transformed my dogs into royalty!! But for their size these dogs look and feel soft like puppies!!! Their paws and nails look like they have been groomed weekly not like the bear claws they once had.
