I've always been a fan of Petco. Their rewards program is great as long as you do frequent Petco often enough. This location always has a full stock of items (I have a cat so I only go to the cat section). They also have rescues come for adoption days which I think is great. My opinion -- this location does not take good care of their reptiles. Was in there today and the dishes had algae in them. Tons of humid animals at less than 40% humidity and showing shed problems. Plus they don't even sell any PVC enclosures for ball pythons with as many as they have. And, despite having tons of hot pads and lamps, they have barely any thermostats, much less pulse or dimming ones. Do better. Last time we ever shop here. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I've been bringing my dogs here for grooming for several years and have always had good experiences -- until today. I was denied service because I supposedly needed updated vaccination records, even though I was never notified in advance. I normally receive reminders by text, phone, or through the app, but this time I received nothing. When I tried to explain, the staff was rude and dismissive. To make things worse, 40 minutes after my appointment time, I finally received the text asking for the records. The lack of communication and professionalism was extremely disappointing. Because of this experience, I will no longer be using Petco and will not be recommending them to others. read more

Pertaining to the grooming, I had always been happy with the grooms for my pups for the last 5 years but I will not be going back. Unfortunately my preferred groomers have moved on to greener pastures. Another reason aside from my groomers not being there, is because of their $5.99 materials fee charge. They never had this extra charge when I first started taking my pups there. I feel paying over $100 for one dog should include the materials needed to groom, but evidently at Petco it did not. Additionally, I would like to mention that the grooming area was always in disarray. It smelled musty and they had this industrial air machine in this small area trying to fix whatever air quality thing was going on. And it has been going on for quite some time. The company doesn't seem to mind not putting money into this area. I only stayed because of the groomers, exited side right April 2025. One positive thing that I did like was that I could schedule online and get prices. read more

The poor Beta fish were living in deplorable conditions. Every single fish looked miserable, had fin rot and was dying. FIVE of them were already dead. Every cup had yellow and brown water that was filled with poop. The employees acted shocked when I pointed out the situation and didn't know who was responsible for caring for the Betas, they didn't know when the last water change was. It was very obvious it was more than a week ago. The manager called himself an "animal lover" yet he's running a store where these poor innocent creatures are left in horrendous and cruel conditions. I mostly like shopping here. They have the food and treats my pet needs/likes. They recently got rid of all their stock that contained artificial ingredients which shows some actual compassion for customers pets. The store is pretty clean for a place people bring their dogs and cats. The prices seem reasonable, I never break the bank to stock up. The rewards system feels pointless, I never seem to earn anything. The other downside is they could use more people working registers. With a friendly, knowledgeable staff this place overall a good shopping experience. read more

Been going here for so long and have never done a review. Back in the past the service was great, I have had my dogs groomed here as well. I purchased many dog, cat, and bird toys, treats, foods, etc from this location as I am a big animal lover. I don't just buy for my own pets but also as gifts for my family and friends pets. Petco had not been the same as it used to be. The service is lacking of good prompt customer care. You now have to stand there waiting for a while and have to hunt down someone to help you. I am an avid aquarium fish keeper and been doing so since I was 15 years old so I've gained lots of knowledge and experience in the hobby. I kid you not, I can be standing there in the aquarium section for an hour before anyone would approach me and ask if I needed any help. I've waited more than an hour just to get someone to get the fish I wanted and the person helped another customer who just got there before helping me who was there first. Also, one pet peeve I have is that they do not educate their employees enough about the care of these animals. I had a guy helped me one time and keep telling me information about a certain fish I bought that is not accurate. I just smiled and kept my mouth shut as I was irritated and sadden how very little they know about the care of the fish and they confidently telling people false or in accurate information. Anyways, it's not always the employees fault but the employer, as they lack the resources to educate and train them. And last time I was here the manager was arrogant and have no clue of what a good customer service is. I really don't know how he was hired as the store manager for having a bad attitude and no good customer service whatsoever. So when I come here, I just grab what I need and try to leave as fast as I can before running into him and my day gets ruined. This is the only pet store nearby me and all the other ones are in another town. If you have to buy pet supplies here it is best to make a list before going in so you can get what you need and leave right away. I spend pretty good amount of money with pet foods, toys and supplies normally every month so I order online using their app and have it delivered for free. This helps avoid running into their lacking of good customer service specially from the bad attitude manager. Petco needs to hire more experienced, knowledgeable and competent staff specifically hire a manager who knows what a good customer service is don't have a bad attitude when a customer ask questions and for help. read more

I love shopping at Petco. I used to work at petco tho. Different location.. the stars are given because they've finally went back to price matching any website; not JUST Petco. But I had to stand my ground over and over before this worker called her manager to try to prove me wrong on this, but when he told her i could do the price match/that I was correct, she seemed irritated with me, like she took me wanting to save money personally..? It's always the same girl too. I love the workers there... they go through employees quite often, but a few of the long-term employees are awesome and were used to seeing eachother when I come shopping! But this one worker never seems to have the time to listen to you or actually look into any questions you ask. Besides her and the occasional worker who maybe just has a bad day (like we all do!) I love the store. I wish they had better training programs for the employees though because they give advice and suggestions for animals that are actually quite dangerous. For example, they VERY COMMONLY tell new African Dwarf Frog owners to feed them bloodworms. This will actually KILL the frogs when fed as a staple food. This is something that should only be given every once in a while. I personally NEVER feed them to my ADF's. MYSIS SHRIMP is the best staple food for ADF's. And the mouse/hamster/rabbit cages as well as the hamster balls are advertised more towards CHILDREN rather than the safety and health of the animal. It's much better to teach our young ones the correct Way to care for animals, not just make their cages look like another toy.. this leads to the children thinking these poor LIVING CREATURES are more like toys, than pets/part of the family that need to be cared for and protected. Petco needs to train more about diet and what animals need to be healthy and lastly. PETCO NEEDS TO STOP SELLING PRODUCTS THAT KILL OUR PETS!!! Like RAWHIDE. And they need to be more educated in what species need to stay healthy and happy. For ex. MALE mice should NOT be houses with other male mice, correct tank size for number of fish, and the trainers at petco need to go through a more rigorous training program. When I was there they let Almost anyone Train. You just had to pass this little exam.. I think if you're going to be training pet parents, ESPECIALLY new pet parents, they should be able to be TOTALLY SURE the trainers have the right amount and type of training they need to train others. YOUR pets depend on these things. Oh and again, REMOVE THE HAMSTER BALLS FROM YOUR SHELVES and STOP SELLING CAGES THAT ARE MORE FOR KIDS ENTERTAINMENT THAN THE ANIMALS' ACTUAL WELL-BEING!!! Okay, it doesn't look like much (the plaza itself is a little drab and store sign is faded) and it's kinda small, but if I'm looking for pet supplies I can usually find what I need easily here. I have three dogs and a cat so I am often running in for something or other. They carry my favorite brand of dog and cat food, Blue Buffalo- great quality, and never involved in any pet food recalls like others! The staff seems small, as compared with the over abundance in PetSmart in Gurnee (which I actually prefer due to the brighter aesthetic and variety of products), but they are always friendly and helpful. One cashier on a slow day nicely offered to have me pull my car to the front curb, and then carried my 40 Lb bag of dog food out for me. They occasionally have vaccination clinics (I took my cat once) but be prepared for long lines; I believe I waited 45 minutes to an hour with no seating. Additionally, they hold pet adoptions here regularly. Lastly, you can have your pets groomed, which we have a couple times for our dogs. At the time, it was just one woman working in the grooming area as far as I could tell. I tend to prefer seeing a lot of groomers in a lively setting with lots of grooming happening, as opposed to the sort of bleak scenario I encountered here. Still, dogs were nicely and accurately groomed with no issues and in a timely manner so I really can't complain. read more

I took my dog to the groomer in Round Lake, not her first time being groomed but first time here. she's done great with groomers in the past. She came home with a wound on her bottom and clearly in pain and acting like she was traumatized. I happen to have an appointment at the vet for her yearly checkup so I'll have it checke but otherwise I would have made an appointment for her. I will never take her there ever again. read more

Was looking for a local pet store to get cat food for my cat. Petco was close enough by they have a very good selection of cat food. Employees working there are all very friendly and helpful. I tried a new flavor of Blue Mountain and she threw it up every time she ate it and stopped eating altogether. Disgusting customer service. Was in store today 5/30/19 at 5:32pm. While the young man checked us out (Steve) - he was polite. However, the next register over the Store Manager and young lady at Checkout were arguing with a customer. Long story short - the customer was right.....and when she left - the Store Manager and lady began to complain about the customer and how bad she was, how she "didn't get it" and were making fun of her. Yes, all of this right in front of us and other customers. It was a disgusting display of ignorance. I can't even imagine treating people this way and then talking about them when they leave - only to make fun of them. HORRIBLE. Yes, I have the receipt. This is likely the last receipt I, or any friends or family members will have from Petco. There are too many options to shop for pet supplies...we can spend our $$ elsewhere. read more

This is in regards to the grooming department. Lets just say extremely unhappy. It takes a lot for me to complain and Petco has done it. I took my adorable puppy Aero to get a basic wash and cut. Well after paying $60 I was expecting a show dog. I was wrong. They basically shaved him down, which would normally be fine, but make it even.His ears and the top of his head was uneven. I think I could have done a better job myself. You would think after grooming 50+ dogs you would get the "hang of it." So my wallet is lighter and I'm kicking myself in the butt. Took our Dog to get groomed and he came home bleeding from his elbow. They told my BF that he was hurt when he arrived. it was clearly from a razor. I've been to almost all the pet stores in the area at this point, I have a small zoo at home. This store happens to be smaller in size but manage to carry almost all of my pets' food, treats, and litter. For the most part, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, especially the general manager. I am extremely pleased with the general manager's customer service skills. Their dog trainer is very sweet as well. Two things keep me from giving it five stars, the lack of product variety compared to the bigger locations and sometimes inconsistent climate conditions for their pets for sale. read more

I was supposed to get a free wash for my dog's 8th haircut. I called customer service first to find out where on the site it would be. They said they did not see them. 5 or 6 e-mails back and forth mainly with me yelling in text talk. My brother installed the app on my phone which showed 7 punches and one dog with 20% off. We screen shot it and sent it along with a picture of the 7 grooming appointments they had on their website with numbered pages and exactly what service was done on the dog. She had the nerve to tell me she only saw 5! She would not talk about the app that had 8. I called my groomers after numerous e-mail arguments and customer service kept changing their story. My groomers saw even more appointments than I saw. Then customer services said today, it was a year promo. I am out of luck. Do not support Petco. We just finished puppy class 1 here. Kayla was the trainer for the class (she is great !!!) if you take a puppy class make sure Kayla is the trainer for your class. All of my goals were met and even passes other goals. She knows the different breeds and what works for the specific breed. I have an Australian Shepard that is very very smart but extremely high energy. She was able to take a different approach in training to fit my specific dogs needs. I look forward to enrolling her in the 2nd round of classes and I will make sure we use Kayla as the trainer. read more

I like this place better than petsmart (Gurnee) Even though it is a smaller place, the employees take the time to help you and give u advice on their products. One of them helped me figure out what kind of food my picky senior cat would enjoy and he was very right. Also, they have many over the counter medicine that petsmart does not have. They also carry many natural over the counter meds. I tried their grooming facility and I was VERY happy! I've taken my dog to petsmart and other places and this place by far is the best. Not only my dog's haircut was beautiful but we were treated very well. My dog is very nervous and can be aggressive when she's scared. But this time, my dog was very calmed and did not bark once.. I took my dog to Puppy One training and had a wonderful experience. Kaitlin was amazing. Unfortunately I did not have the same experience with Carol for Puppy Two. When we arrived, Carol asked for shot records which I completely understand. I told her that they should have his shot records since he just completed the Puppy One class. Carol then asked if my puppy had his rabies shot. I said, "yes". She then went to check to see if they had the records, which they did not. That wasn't the problem. My issue was that when Carol went to check the records, she told the other dog parents to not let their dogs near mine. I felt that was rude, uncalled for and left me in a very uncomfortable situation. Needless to say, I opted for the refund and will get training somewhere else. read more

NEVER BUY A PET HERE! NEVER BRING YOUR PETS! I've always gone there to buy dog food, but today I stopped and looked at the reptiles. These poor things are in completely inadequate environments, which probably shouldn't surprise me, but it was sad. Dry water bowls, VERY low humidity. Just one example: The Veiled Chameleons should be in 50-100% humidity, and the thermostat said it was 30%! (I took pictures) I told the girl working there that it was low and she looked at me like I was insulting her. She said "Ok... We don't have temperature controled environments. I guess I'll mist them before I go but I already did today." She was so sassy about it and obviously not concerned about these poor things. Pay $60 for an animal that's been living in an inadequate environment being cared for by people like this?! This place SELLS this type of equipment! They clearly DON'T CARE about these animals and keeping them COMFORTABLE and HEALTHY. I won't buy dog food here any more. You probably shouldn't take your pets here either. I know I won't. read more

Stopped in at Petco on a Wednesday eve. As I walked by the Betta bowls, I was horrified to find numerous Betta dead or dying. The assistant manager stated the temperature inside the building was the issue. I asked why would PETCO sell a live creature if you could not accommodate it's needs. She stated she would take them back to the sick fish area. This COMPLETELY WRECKED MY EVENING and following several days. I cannot get the memory of fish floating and laying at the bottom of the bowls. This place is a pit. I WILL NEVER GO TO ANY PETCO AGAIN. Well first of all we love Petco in round Lake! Most of the people are awesome. Jeff is very very helpful and always attentive.. last night we went to go buy a new dog collar and a leash we included it in with the dog food and dog treats $150 worth of things.. as we were ingraving our dogs name on the collar we just bought, we saw a different collar,We decided to swap them out so we returned the other collar and somehow someway we had a $15 credit anyway coming to us so the gentleman instead of getting the manager he just put a credit on a Petco card.Well he accidentally gave us $20 more in credit store and my husband and I didn't even realize that. When we got home we realized we didn't have either color so we went back to the Petco store and that's when the manager came to help. She was very mean telling us that we got $30 worth of store credit that wasn't deserved to us. First of all if we got $30 in store credit that wasn't supposed to be ours ,,why would we come back to the same store? And it's not my job to do with the register is supposed to do! the register supposed to add it up but the guy was so busy and worried about his cat that he had with him that he messed up and it wasn't our fault but the manager sure made it seem like it was our fault.. I've also seen her Yell at Jeff for not paying attention to customers when he was just doing his job busy putting something away.. she isn't very nice I hope I don't have to deal with her again .. read more
