Raritan NJ store a continuing changeover of personnel especially in the grooming department. I've had my dog groomed at this location for a long time. They don't do a very good job and their employees were very rude. The manager of the grooming department blocked me from scheduling an appointment online. Very unhappy with Petco Grooming in Raritan. I have two "anxious" 10 year old dogs, but they aren't difficult (meaning not biters or growlers or unruly). Had them groomed here several months back and the groomer didn't follow instructions with respect to one of them though I nevertheless tipped her nicely (20%) for both dogs (and, as I left, wondered why I was nice enough to do so). They were also incredibly "frazzled" in spirit when I picked them up and seemed scared. When, as a result, I attempted to make an appointment with a different Petco groomer this past weekend, I was informed by the grooming manager that because of their anxiety, the groomer I didn't want to re-use would not groom them (uh, OKAY!) but that they were not suitable for grooming by Petco at all. Unbelievable. What kind of customer service is that? Not an acceptable kind. Took both dogs instead to a different grooming salon who was happy to take them both and I explained the anxiety in advance. When I picked them up today, they were both excited and happy, completely at ease, and groomed exactly as I had requested (see photos...one shaved and one with a haircut only, exactly as I had requested of Petco to no avail several months back...they look sad, but they're happy boys, just fatigued)! DO "NOT" TAKE YOUR DOG HERE, ESPECIALLY THE ONE AT THE CIRCLE IN BRIDGEWATER/RARITAN/Somerville. I have a goldendoodle that has some matt but truly not a lot. The actual groomer said she could work with him and not shave him. I made an appointment on an off day and off hour, when I brought him in there were 6 other dogs that were paraded in after we got there. After about 15 mins the manager came out and said that they were going to have to shave my dog. I said no and I would take him home, she said they already started..... basically the groomer was pressured by the manager to do this rather than her spending time with my dog. This was in January, they did an exceptionally poor job shaving him, all choppy, she did not do his ears or his inner paws, nor did they clip his nails. They charged me extra for having to "brush him out" Crap, they shaved him what was there to brush.... I was completely distraught, they would not refund my money, nor would they complete the job of his ears or his paws. The manager said my dog was "dangerous" Well, I can tell you that anyone who knows my dog will attest to the fact that he is a complete mush. The manager was disrespectful and wrong. Mine was SEVERELY traumatized by the groomers to the point that now 4+ years later she still needs xanax and a specialized dog groomer to get groomed due to PTSD causing anxiety and aggression during grooming as a result of going to Petco. My cat is dying from the FVRCP vaccine given by Vetco - a subsidary of Petco. He got the vaccine 2 weeks ago, became ill, and is now in liver failure which will kill him short of a miracle. My cat is 11 years old but the vet approved the shot. That's it no more vaccines for my pets. read more

The store didn't have what I was looking for even though the website said they had it in stock. When I asked for help and showed the employee the website on my phone where it showed that they had it in stock, she was clearly in a bad mood and acted as if she was doing me a favor by helping look for it. She walked over with her shoulders shrugged looking annoyed. She didn't offer any sort of remorse other than simply saying "we don't have it" before walking away as quickly as she could. I even responded by saying "no worries, thanks for checking" as she was walking away and she still proceeded to storm off as quickly as she could without saying anything back. This is not the way to act toward customers. Very unprofessional and rude, and I don't plan on returning any time soon after this. The employees at Pet Supplies Plus are much friendlier and much more accommodating, so I'll be going there from now on and avoiding Petco whenever I can. read more

After reading the Yelp reviews I decided to bring my 14 yr Pomeranian in for a complete grooming. I spoke to Michelle who took all my information over the phone and made me an appointment for the next day. She told me my groomer would be Amanda who is new. I was reassured she loves to groom Pomeranians. Yesterday I showed up at 9:50a for a 10a grooming. I was the first person to arrive, the store wasn't open yet. At 9:58a a woman comes up to me and asked if I was here for a grooming. She and I walked in together and I found out she was my groomer Amanda. I explain to Amanda that I had a very bad experience with another grooming place locally( Pup Purri Martinsville ) and my dog had been caged for eight hours after they lied to me several times and never groomed my dog. When I arrived the owner Rob and the groomer were quickly trying to groom my Pom and I heard him crying as they pulled on his legs and hurt him. He limped for several days. They didn't know I was in the building.. I told Amanda I wanted to be called immediately as soon as he was done because he's 14 years old and I don't want him sitting in a cage. Amanda a-shored me that when he was done she would call me and give me a 10 minutes heads up because I had a 15 minute drive. We discussed what kind of cut I wanted for my Pom. She showed me a a sample of cutting heights which I appreciated. Amanda reconfirmed my phone number verbally. I repeated it back to her. I took some pictures and left. As the day went on I noticed I still didn't receive a phone call. I thought this was a bit strange,but because of the holidays I thought they might be very busy. Finally, at 4:55p I called and spoke with Dan. I asked him why my dog still wasn't done and that I haven't received a phone call. Dan told me that they called several times. I checked my phone log and there was not one call. I told him it was impossible because my phone never rang it was in my back pocket the entire day and I checked my phone log every hour. Dan asked me what my phone number was and I told him. Dan admitted they had the wrong phone number and that they were calling the wrong person. I asked what time my dog was ready and he said 1p. I was so upset I quickly drove over there. My dog sat in a cage for four hours after being groomed. I specifically told them I didn't want that to happen. I said how could you have the wrong phone number when I confirmed it with Michelle , Amanda and even you. Amanda came to the front and I asked her the same thing. She told me they wrote it down wrong. The manager Jay came over and I explained what had happened , and that I was very specific in what I wanted, and that my 14 yr old Pom should've never been caged for 4 hours after he was done. I also told Jay i'm registered in the Petco computer system for membership which I told Amanda and Dan before I left. No one thought to check. The other thing is my dog has a Petco tag on his collar with his name , phone number and address on him which no one seemed to check that either. I will say this, Petco Raritan did accept responsibility for the screw up. Ananda and Jay did apologize and my little Pomeranian Max got a nice haircut. I would suggest going forward that Petco Raritan groomers and workers double checks every single phone number and tries to give a time for pickup to avoid any unnecessary mix ups or problems. I will say Amanda and Jay took full responsibility, which I truly appreciated. I would give 1 star for service. 7 hrs way too long. I would give 4 stars for being a clean store and having a nice variety. I would give 4 stars for grooming. Ananda did do a nice job. It's a shame if there wasn't this screw up they would've gotten a great review. For now they can only get 1 star. read more

I have bought fish from here and for the third time now I bring them home to find their gills are infected and just the other day I brought home two fish and realized the one cory catfish was missing it's barbel. Next morning he was dead with more missing barbels. Judging by how many dead fish float around in these store tanks. I'm going to say this store sucks are caring for its pets. I've heard one too many horror stories from friends about this place selling sick animals! read more

This place is beyond dirty. I went in to buy cat food. I saw a dead mouse in a trap, mice droppings and cat food bags chewed in corners, dead bugs on the shelves, and the most disturbing was the smell from the animal cages not being cleaned. There was mold in the water and their cages were dirty. This place needs to be shut down. I have filed a complaint with the corporate office. read more

My friend's dog went here for grooming. Boy oh boy, when I tell you how he looked! The groomer, who I don't know who they are, completely shaved the dog (which was understandable since the dog's fur was matted). Somehow, the groomer "forgot about his ears", as my friend put it, so now he looks like fricking Dora the Explorer with his poofy ears. Also, he has a bald spot on his head and his feet were trimmed so horribly it looks like a deflated tutu around his paws. If you look up "dog haircut fails" or "PetCo grooming images", then you can see for yourself how bad this dog relatively looks. It just overall was cut so badly. Again, I don't know who the groomer was, so I can't say that all PetCo groomers are bad. But to whoever cut my friend's dog's fur, I hope your pillow is warm when you go to sleep for the rest of your life. read more

This is the closest Petco to where we live but I always like the options petco has to offer. Lots of animals my daughter loves looking at and well priced food. They recently helped me switch brands for my dog and handled an exchange very well and was very helpful the past few times I've been in. The reason it lost a star is because it seems kind of dirty or not very updated. read more

This is where I get my food and litter! They have a huge selection of Friskies, my brand of choice for wet food. They also have a large variety of pretty much any brand you can think of! The store is pretty easy to navigate and well laid out. However I would appreciate if they took the cat section out of the far back corner and brought it closer to the front. My little legs get tired walking around that place, so my mom usually has to push me around in the cart! One really neat thing that they do at this location, is that at Christmas- SANTA COMES HERE!!!! My mom brings me here every year to get my picture taken with Santa. Last year he had on eyeliner and nailpolish........... so that was kind of weird, but he's really nice and gentle when holding me. The picture is free but you pay for the frame and they have 2 different ones that you can get. I have my own fish tank at home and once we had a fish that my mom said was really "aggressive." She called Petco and they actually adopted him. One of the staff brought him home and always tells my mom how great he's doing in her fishtank! Insider Santa Picture Tip: Bring your own camera! The staff do permit you to take as many pictures as you like and my mom has gotten some really great pictures of me with Santa! Petco, only give you one picture, so you should definately try to bring your own camera. read more

Avoid this store at all costs- especially for fish. First off this store is dirty. It just does not have a nice vibe at all. Second, the products cost more than Petsmart. Third, the employees are beyond rude. They give you an attitude and treat you like dirt. They act extremely arrogant. One cashier doesn't even acknowledge you. Another associate I dealt with believed they knew all about one area (when they in fact were completely wrong) and treated me with great arrogance and belittlement to the point of me being embarrassed in front of someone else. I have come numerous times to get my dogs nails trim. The last both times the person shows up late to work. I have to wait over one hour to be helped making me late for my job. I can not make an appointment for a nail trim because it is not allowed, however the grooming appointments come first while I continue to wait to be help. Customer service from the floor staff are great not so much from the groomers. I do not think I will ever use them again. read more

Very disappointed. So I returned something and purchases another item which was more money. No problem until they said they would not credit me or allow me to continue without my drivers license. I said no and they were not going to give me a credit or larger purchase. Even the operations manager Stephen walked away and would not help. THEY HAVE NO RIGHT DEMANDING MY PERSONAL INFORMATION!. Traveling with my dog requires mandatory visits to pet stores to not only see the deals and offerings but so she can socialize with some new friends. Normally I wouldn't think much of a Petco beside the corporate overall feel but this store was different. A LOT. The people are very "into your needs" the community is supported well (Greyhound Rescue was representing that day) and their prices of products we normally use were fairly priced. I have been to the Petco at the Somerville Circle many times for supplies for my cats. They have an overwhelming choice of different types of cat food- regular, grain free, high end, even frozen and refrigerated raw food. My head was swimming. Then Eric came to my rescue. If you are ever in need of help, Eric is your man. He has a wealth of knowledge that he is more than willing to share, and he has the best interest in your animals well being. He allowed me to explain my complicated cat issues, and then took a lot of time helping me find the best products for my cats. He really wants your animals to be happy. If my cat doesn't like the items, he told me to bring them back with my receipt and he will take care of it. Knowing I can bring them back means I could try a few different items, and hopefully find one that my cat likes. He even helped me search online for an item they didn't carry and had it sent to my home with free shipping! He definitely went above and beyond. I always struggle with how to rate chain places. If you've been to one Petco, you've been to them all. They're like Walmart and Target. They even have the same layout from store to store. So, assuming that you're judging this Petco versus other Petcos, the only real differentiator that you can have is the staff. The staff at this Petco is friendly and competent. They're not proactively helpful, but that doesn't mean that they wouldn't be helpful if you asked them for something. They seemed totally willing to help if needed. If you're going to rate Petco versus other pet food / supplies stores, I think that there is one major positive and one major negative. The positive is the stock. They have a huge stock to choose from, including more brands and more varieties of the brands that they carry. This is also kind of the negative, too. When I go to the smaller pet food stores, I like that they seem to have a certain commitment to healthy pet foods. For example, when I used to go to a little pet food store in my old neighborhood (Upper West Side, Manhattan), I knew that they were insane about how healthy things were for dogs. So I knew that I didn't have to worry about anything that I bought there. Being new to dog ownership (but loving my new dog very much), this is very important to me. If Petco sells dog foods (e.g. Purina, Iams, etc.) that even I know probably aren't the best for dogs, not to mention treats like rawhide Greenies, I can't help but wonder what kind of things they are selling that I don't know aren't healthy for my dog. read more

We signed up for a beginner training class and the manager of the store called to confirm the date and time. We showed up at that appropriate time and they were running a different class. The trainers had no idea why the manager told us that time and date. We returned the package and went to another business. We still continue to buy our pet food at this location. We had coupons for some food that was a Petco coupon that was not expired. The store accepted the coupon two times previously. Today the manager refused to accept the coupon, even though there was no restrictions on the coupon. It was no problem that they didn't accept the coupon but the manner in which the manager talked to me was aggressive. He accused me of theft and was very rude in handling the situation. read more

For over a year I've been taking my chocolate lab to Petco (at the Somerville Circle) for grooming and Amanda does an outstanding job! My dog is super hairy. I ask for a bath and the shedless treatment. I've gone to many groomers and no one eliminates as much hair as Amanda; she is the best! Thank you very much Amanda! read more

Two years ago at Christmas my girlfriend and I thought we would buy her son a Bearded Dragon for Christmas. He is into Dinosaurs and it seemed like a cool pet for him. We went to Petco and bought the entire set-up as it was recommended to us with the bearded dragon and cage and lights and stuff.. The first thing we discovered is that the set that the self proclaimed lizard expert sold us came with sand. Well sand is bad for young bearded dragons so that had to be replaced. Then with in a few months we discovered that the tank that the bearded dragon was in was way to small and we had to buy a bigger tank so now we are in for about 1000 dollars for our pet. Now for the real issue, our bearded dragon got sick we took him to the vet and found out that the UVB lighting that we have been using is not strong enough for Bearded Dragons. This is the bulb that Petco recommended, comes with the starter kit and has been recommended as the right one on additional trips. Our Dragon (Scalie) will probably not survive this and while we are treating him he is in pain so even if he does survive we have needlessly hurt our pet. Yes I know some of you are saying it is just a lizard but he is part of our family. My issue here is that you ask for help because you want the best for your pet and you get bad information and everyone suffers. read more
