I don't know if it was just me and my fur babies but I took them here while staying at a hotel and I paid for my dogs to get their teeth brushed, the upgraded add-on, and then less than a week later, one of my dogs has a mouth infection from not having his teeth brushed. So I don't know why none of my dogs had their teeth cleaned when we paid for it. They did a really good job on their hair cuts and the ladies were nice but they didn't clean any of their teeth. read more

On my first trip to this petco, I had a mediocre experience trying to find ear cleaning wash for my poodle. Nobody working there seemed to know what the different ones were better for, and the one they told me to get ended up making my dog's ears super irritated. We still are waiting for our boxes of things to arrive, so I don't have any of my grooming items with me. That's when I noticed while exchanging my ear wash for something else, that they do grooming as well. I scheduled an appointment for a wash and dry for the very next morning with James at 7am. In the morning, I arrive on time and not only is it closed and locked, the groomer is sitting outside in the rain on the curb. The team that was supposed to open and unlock the building was around 15 minutes late because they had to make a stop at dunkin doughnuts for coffees. James was great however with my dog, and he came out looking like a low-flying cloud. He was happy and smelled great, and was done in under an hour. I used to shop here frequently years ago but now only come in once and a great while and, YIKES... this place has really gone downhill. It's filthy, always has half finished projects everywhere, and you can never find help. I went in to get a few fish to put in an established 40. They looked ok in the store under the artificial lighting. I went home and put them in the tank and by the next morning the Black Moore was COVERED in cottony fungus (not ich, but a fungus). The following day it was on one of the Fantails and the poor Black Moore appears to be knocking on death's door. I called the store to speak to someone in aquatics and was informed that there was no one there in that department. She asked what I needed to talk to them about and I told her that I wanted to inform them that they had a super contagious fungus in their tank. It's planted, so they really need to treat the system and not sell any plants or fish in there until they get it under control. The girl on the phone had a lackluster, DGAF attitude. She didn't even ask which tank system it was (I did stress which one, twice). It would not surprise me if no action was taken. Over the years I've had several tanks, and many different types of fish, so I'm not a newbie. I know that every time you add new fish you risk introducing something to your tank. I'm thankful I was starting this one over and didn't end up contaminating a big tank of fish, but I'll probably lose the Black Moore and now need to treat my whole tank. This Petco's response to the problem is what upsets me more than anything. They clearly do not care and I'm certain will end up contaminating other tanks. I should've followed my gut when I saw how shitty that department looked, but there aren't really a ton of options in the area for fish. Lesson learned. read more

I'd like to write a nice review about Petco Middletown for a change but unfortunately every time I go there, mostly for fish, I leave completely irate due to their fish salespeople who act like they know everything, when in reality they're working minimum wage in retail and think they're gods gift to the fish world. So yesterday my fish tank sprung a leak. It was time for a replacement or to rehome the last fish since in all honesty it's a lot of work. We're forever home people even with fish so this was difficult. My mom brings the fish to Petco so they can resell. They don't have a big enough tank. It's an emergency situation. I'd even called shelters cause you never know. So the. Mom sees a tank that we could live with and they refused to sell it to her since it wasn't big enough for that one last fish. I'm so tired of the wanna ne know it all salespeople in this store. He actually said "go to Fall River there's a few fish stores there that might take him" sure my moms going to drive around Fall River looking for fish stores when the fish was double bagged and really needed a tank asap. Petco Middletown has completely lost my business and will most likely stay away from the entire chain. This is the second bad experience with them. I'm done. I love this petco!! I come here regularly for my fish, guinea pig, and cat supplies!! Travis and Cullen are two gentlemen who work in the aquatics section and always help me with whatever I need and answer my endless questions. They are very knowledgeable about fish because they both own several tanks of fish at their house. So they have lots of experience which makes me very comfortable going to petco over the highly specific aquatics stores which can tend to be over priced. Petco had a Black Friday sale yesterday when I went into the store and although there wasn't much on sale that I was looking for the hay was buy one get one free which was really cool. I wish the stickers for sales like that were a bit bigger because I almost walked right past that brand and didn't notice!!!! read more

Yesterday I received a text stating they needed a doctors note stating it was okay for her to get groomed, which I sent and then got a confirmation stating they would see her tomorrow. Today about an hour and a half before her appointment I get a call stating they cannot take her today because the doctors not didn't provide the grade of her heart murmur. Just 5 weeks ago she was allowed to be groomed without a doctors note. Their original confirmation states that I would have to give 48 hours notice for cancellation, but they don't need to? ** THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE GROOMING SERVICES AT THE MIDDLETON PETCO ** For grooming, this place is inexcusably terrible. Save your dog the stress and pain. I tried them twice, with my boy. The first time, the service was middling: nothing extraordinary. Not too good, not too bad. The second time was heartbreaking. When I picked up my boy, he was panting heavily, even despite the cold temperature. I didn't see what had him so distressed until I got him home. His flanks were still wet and soapy -- you could feel the product residue on him. His claws were cut so short that two were bleeding, cut to the quick. Even worse than that, the cut job was so POOR that it fractured the rest of his claws, giving him monstrous "hangnails" that shredded furniture and kept expanding, causing him pain and discomfort. For $90+, I was given a dog that was in much worse condition than the one I brought in. The kicker was when the groomer cheerfully told me my dog had "needed" a muzzle for the service. The same old dog who's been professionally groomed every 2 months for over 8 years. I was so shocked, I called my old groomers in Hawaii about that. They confirmed: no one had EVER needed a muzzle to trim his claws. If you cut ME once -- then continue to cut me after that -- I'd be liable to bite, too. I get my dogs nails trimmed here all the time and the ladies are always super pleasant. You can't beat the convenience. The only thing for a pet store they should have a much better selection of harnesses and leashes. This isn't something you can order over the computer and you can't bring your dog into Walmart. DO NOT GET YOUR DOGS GROOMED HERE. My dog was a regular here at one point. Last September I recall is when she suddenly developed a MASSIVE infection around her neck. She became i'll for WEEKS and we thought she wouldn't make it. We prepared for the worst but luckily she is a strong girl. This infection became noticeable about 3 days after her appointment. I touched her neck and it was wet and sticky. Took her to the vet and they said that she had small cuts along her neck from the tools used to groom her. The tools that petco uses must not be washed sufficiently. We were thinking about suing petco for this. It was unbelievable and I couldn't emphasize this enough DO NOT PUT YOUR DOG THROUGH THE PAIN OR EVEN THE RISK OF WHAT MY DOG AND MY FAMILY WENT THROUGH. A once healthy and happy dog became depressed and HARDLY ABLE TO WALK. Her antibiotics didn't work until weeks after her prescription kept changing to be stronger. THE VERY BARE MINIMUM that petco did do was pay for her medical bills. I will NEVER support petco again because of what they did to my dog. IT GETS WORSE. this isn't the first time this happened. A dog died at the hands of Petco in Middletown. In 2017 a dog named Ollie lost his life while his NAILS WERE BEING TRIMMED. That is ridiculous. Also it's no secret that the animals being sold at petco are being mistreated. Look up stories and you'll see how cruel the employees can be. I'm sure not every employee awful but putting animals lives at risk is what gives this petco a one star. read more

Tammy was incredibly accommodating and let me wash my absolutely filthy border collie at the self-wash even though it was VERY NEAR closing (the self pet wash closes at 6, fyi!). I can't even believe I actually paid EIGHTY NINE DOLLARS for my chihuahua mix to get his hair TRIMMED! not even shaved, just a wash & a trim & when I booked this online I was given a price of $56!!! There is a HUGE difference between $56 & $89 dollars especially when he basically looks exactly the same as he did when I dropped him off. I don't know if they sprinkled him w some anti aging pixie dust or something like that, which helps keep him alive & healthier & in my life longer, bc that's the ONLY reason I should be spending more on my 12lb dogs hair than I do on my own! very disappointed w this first & absolutely last experience w taking my dog to the groomers. read more

I have lived in other states before and so far this Petco has been one of the worst I have been to. I live in Middletown and have noticed that for whatever reason when larger companies like this come into town the stores only offer half of the services, products and etc compared to ones in other towns/states. The products here are over priced, absolutely. It is also difficult because once Petco came into town the smaller pet shops ended up going out of business. Thus, it's a bit difficult to find everything ones companion needs. The employees are scattered in service, very hit or miss. Someone else on here has mentioned that the employees see miserable, sadly I agree. I take my brother's dog here at times for a grooming and somehow some of the pup's records are missing. This makes it difficult for us at times because it is hard to remember the exact hair length, or what we did the last time she came in. I hope a different pet shop comes into town soon! read more

As is the plight of many large-scale chains, Petco - at least this one - doesn't offer much in the way of one-on-one TLC to the customer. I've had several sour experiences that would cause me to not return, if not for the fact that there aren't any alternatives for some products they carry within an hour's drive. Today's dilemma was that when I was ready to buy, there was no one manning the registers. I stood there for a minute then started yelling - hellooooooooo....hello? A small thing, but then again having a representative of your business available to help customers is pretty much the reason you exist. If you can, I recommend you try the two other pet stores on W Main within a mile or two - Aquidneck Aquarium and Pet Deli or Petrageous, both Mom & Pop joints that are nicer to deal with. read more

My dog is a regular at this Petco and is infamous for stealing treats! We usually make a special trip to Petco once every few weeks since it is much closer than the one I prefer. Prices are fine, although I find pet products to be way more expensive than they really need to be. The service is lacking. Most of the people that work there look miserable and often times there is no one at the register. They are horrible with communication as well. I had to apply for a Petco card 3 times before it actually went through and they were able to recognize my name. The grooming department is nice! My dog got her nails clipped for 10 dollars and they were quick and very neat! They even gave her a quick brush without charging me! I think this place just needs some work in customer service. the people that work at the middletown, ri store are a bunch of liars and idiots .... they say i abuse my animals; and will not say who is telling the false lies i am not the one selling boas and/or pythons with no idea what happens to these beautiful snakes when they reach 10-15ft and are eating cats, rabbits and/or smaller dogs.. ask them how they get the tropical fish and or the saltwater fish.... don't believe a word they say when they try to sell you a fish tank or any of the habitats they WILL try to sell you for your guinea pigs... the best kind of cage for your guinea is a c&c cage... they can be found on chewy or amazon ..also petco charges about $60 for their guinea pigs... the potter league charges about $20/guinea pig... if you get 2 guinea pigs (which is recommended) from petco you are spending about $150 for 2 guinea pigs and they are kept in tiny not so clean tanks..v/s larger much cleaner pens at the potter league and the guinea pigs are much cheaper... they charge $20/guinea pig read more

We have gotten many guinea pigs from them. In 2017 one of my Guinea pigs became sick and had to go to the vet, luckily they paid for it. We told them that one of the guinea pigs looked sick and who knows if they did anything about it. I asked a lady who worked there about rats because my rat had babies and she was basically clueless about them. Although, I do buy some treats for my dogs and guineas I would never buy any animals from them. Don't get me wrong I know it's a pet store but you should have knowledge on animals. read more

I'm fine with this store...it is for animals....staff is nice. That's where the 3 stars come from. The grooming is another story. The manager needs to re-evaluate his employees in there. I decided to use the coupon they offer for grooming. Went in to talk with them on my dogs haircut and see if it worked for us. The girls said the groomers work with us and listen to how we like the cut and I asked if they would leave a part of the hair not done so I can talk her through it. they said,yes. I also talked about how long and clarified how much? They said for a yorkie it be 4-5 hrs. (glad I don't have a big dog) due to having a mohawk, would it be more?. They said no. It's the same price. So I made an appt. (a little hesitant due to hair everywhere) I would think by law they would need to sweep throughout the day, they dont. My appointment was first,9am. So I got there at 850am to give time to talk about the cut with the groomer. Had time to show my records since it my first time. Well the girl said my groomer is running late that she can pass on the info or call me. I told her I would wait since it is a hard haircut. I didn't mind she was late at this time. I understand we all can be late. So she was running 30 minutes late. ok cool. We start to talk about haircut. (as she doesn't write anything down ) So I asked her too call me early so we can go over the top of his head. That part doesn't get translated well. So I went over feet, body, nails, anal glands, mohawk thickness and width, the fade into the neck. Then talked about his face-teddy bear cut, ears trimmed a little, shave under his chin, and trim by his eyes where the hair meets the corner of his eye boogies... (lol) I probably should have had her repeat it. 5 hrs later I get a call that she is starting his face. cool I'll head in. (5 hrs on the dot. wasn't to worried about this but want to clarify) the part where it blew up is when I got there and she cut half of his hair on top of his head. the part I asked not to. So she said she thought she wasn't suppose to cut the face.....as she didn't mess with the teddy bear cut, under the chin. hmmmm why would I say the type of cut if I wanted to be there. I'm very fustrating at this point not realized she didn't even cut his face yet. (Since I was told she was working on face) So after having an audience of 3 groomers and a lady who had master keys (that didn't say anything just listened) I'm just like forget it. she all ready cut hair. Then they clarified the face isn't touch. So I leave since my dog is jumpy and excited because I'm there. So she finished up the hair on the face. As I walk back in my groomer is talking shit about our situation. (nikki) hmmmmm. Then the phone rings and a lady is asking about her dog and when he will be ready...as another groomer (red/orange tint hair color) tries to explain the groomer is behind due to a difficult hair cut.(she hangs up phone) All while I'm standing there they begin to talk about the lady who called and how she was yelling at the groomer. How unprofessional is it to talk about clients while other clients are waiting and standing there. So I am trying to give this girl the benifit of a doubt due to understanding that I have a lot of little things going on with the cut. I'm pretty sure I was very clear about not touching the top of his head...probably would have help to not blame your customers you are running behind and wrote down what needed to be done for the cut since I made it clear it is a lot of little things. Again the floor was never swept. When she brought my dog back after finishing the face she handed him to me and walked away to get other dog. Overall the haircut was good. I left my receipt showing I paid and I still gave her a tip but I think they need a class on Professionalism because they don't have any! So I won't be back for grooming when the employees talk about the clients, blame the clients they running late when in reality she was late to work. Petco grooming didn't work with me on the haircut and she was very mad since she was running behind. very unprofessional. read more

Worst customer service I have ever come across. Not only are the sales people hard to find and uneducated on their products they are also rude. When I was asking someone about flea treatments they basically made me feel like an idiot that was asking a ridiculous question. It's a shame that this place is even on the island. Our nugget needed a grooming session in a major way after getting into something that was irritating her skin and causing lots of extra shedding. This was the only place that could get her in quickly. She's a long haired mutt and I specifically asked that they keep her fur long, not shave it all off. We even pointed out on their hair length chart what we wanted. When we were finally called to come pick her up, five hours after having dropped her off, they had done a close shave on her entire body except head and tail. For some people, this may be the look they are going for but I made it clear that was not what we wanted and they blatantly disregarded it and then charged me $100. The woman who had done the grooming even admitted to knowingly having taken off more than we'd discussed. So, to summarize, watch out if you use this service. read more

Do NOT use their grooming services. I, an untrained individual, could cut hair better than these people. My dog came back with a hacked up hairdo, lopsided and harsh chops everywhere. He also still had matted fur in his undercoat. Behind his ears they had cut out the mats just by chopping the fur off so you could see pink skin. It took a couple months for me to get his coat to grow back in right. Stay away. read more

Went today to get a goldfish, you would think that would be quick and easy right? No, we waited for 40 min for someone to help us. After the first 20 minutes, we went around to try and find someone and the only person that seemed to work there was on the register, we asked her if we could get assistance in the fish department and she said she would be back there in a minute. Then we waited another 20 minutes and no one came to help us so we just left. read more

They take great care of their animals. The staff is friendly and helpful. A couple of the guys there know their stuff about fish. Petcos tend to skimp out on hours and staff but the few that are there are really solid. Standard issue petco but def recommend this place. read more
