The cashier who showed nothing but patience as we delved years into my past to come up with the reference for my rewards account could not have been kinder, but the selection of stuff for cats was a bit weak and there were not many carriers from which to choose. Rude customer service from Grooming Salon Leader Alexandera. I questioned the price I was being charged after a different online quote at the time of booking. Paid $25 more than expected, waited over 4 hours for my 10 pound Havanese to be bathed and trimmed (no mats or issues with his fur) and was told by Alexandera that he's not a small dog because he's bigger than a Chihuahua, his fur was more like a poodle, and I could have taken him and left if I didn't like their price. One nail wasn't even trimmed and the cut was ok but I had to trim multiple stray long patches of fur when I got home. Won't go back, not even for dog food. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE!I give them 1 star for the haircut. I don't know why, but this is our 2nd visit this year. I took my shi Tzu here for his first hair cut. He acted very strange & clingy when he got home. So I found a different groomer. Mom & pop business. No problem. Took him back a year later after he was used to getting groomed. Same behavior! Then they completely shaved my dog! Groomer said he had some matting on his stomach. Then why did he shave EVERY part of the dog? He said the dog didn't like his face touched so he saved it for last. The poor dogs whiskers are just growing back after 3 weeks! His face is completely jacked up. One side of his mouth is shorter than the other! I wish I had taken a b4 & after picture. My dog looks like a skinned cat. NEVER AGAIN! Please don't take your dog to Petco grooming. You will be sorry! read more

After many years of patronizing Petco in Hillside, I was made to wait 8-10 minutes for service; then the groomer attempted to reprimand me for being 10 minutes late, given the weather conditions were awful, and; then stated, "if it happens again, we may not be able to serve you..." I was absolutely in SHOCK and LIVID, but refused to say anything at the time, due to the situation I was in and not wanting any harm to come to my pet. Once again, I've been going there for approximately 8 years. The groomers I'm accustomed to are Alex and Tray... very nice and professional. However, this groomer named Allison, is the reason I will NEVER frequent that particular Petco again!!!! To speak to me in that manner was reprehensible and far beyond my limits of grace. In addition, when I started going, the prices WERE reasonable, the service WAS excellent. Now, the price has gone up almost 50% from when I started... from $45-50 (even with dematting) to now $92 and some change!!!!! I don't have not problem paying for excellent service, which is why I continued to take my pet there. However, what I will NOT tolerate is, BAD customer service, exorbitant prices, and laziness. I went here to pick up some wax worms for my gecko and I was super excited to get them for him and when I got home I opened up the container and more than half of the worms were dead, this is not the first time I've had an issue with this Petco last week I went to go get meal worms for my gecko and they were all dead. I do not recommend this store honestly go to PetSmart if you need to get your reptile or any animal food. I was given a time that my dogs would be ready to be picked up; When I did not receive a call at the time promised, I called and was told they were ready a few hours ago and that the groomer forgot to call me. Upon picking them up, I was charged more than the price quoted. I expressed my dissatisfaction and was told that the additional charges could not be removed from the bill. I stopped by this location 9/29/2021 around 3:10PM to make a grooming appointment for my dog. My dog had been to Petco before but never this location. I spoke to a young man who asked me how old my dog was. I told him that I think he's 13. To confirm that age I looked at my phone to see that he was actually 11 and going to be 12 this year. I then told the young man I'm sorry no he'll be 12 this year. He excuse himself and went to the back to talk to a lady who was in the middle of grooming a dog. When he came back out he told me that their cut off age for grooming was 12 years old. I asked him does it still apply even if my dog won't be 12 until December 15th? He walked off again, spoke to the lady in the back and came back out to tell me that because I initially said 13 and now I'm saying he's 11 going on 12 that they cannot take my dog. Not only was I embarrassed because they tried to make it seem like I was lying about my dogs age but I was also confused at what his age had to do with anything. He is 11 years old going on 12. Whoever the lady was in the back that I saw speaking to him through the glass appeared to have been the one who insinuated that I wasn't telling the truth. She never came from behind the glass speak to me or to explain anything to me. At that point I asked to speak to the store manager in which I did. I spoke to the store manager by the name of Will and he was very helpful and apologetic. Although he was apologetic that did not stop me from being embarrassed and made out to be some kind of a liar trying to get a service. The manager tried to smooth things over but at that point I didn't even want my dog to be serviced at this location just off of the way that they miss handled me. I will never trust them with my dog. What would be the purpose of me lying for a haircut? I take my dog to the Petco in the Southloop. I was only trying to get him in at this location because it was on my way to work. They didn't even give me the option of bringing in his birth records or shot records or anything to prove his age. They just completely shut me down and did not take my word. I walked out of the store still not knowing what his age had to do with him receiving or not receiving a haircut. I do not tolerate bad customer service and rudeness and that is exactly what I received from the people in the grooming salon at this location. This is my local Petco and so I come frequently for food, supplies, and to groom my Pittie. I have never had an issue here. The store is always well kept and the staff is friendly and informative. As for grooming, my dog always looks her best after an appointment with Diana who is such a sweetheart and so patient and caring with my big baby. read more

I should have stopped going here a looong time ago. I don't why I stayed with this place for so long. It's expensive, inconsistent (the prices change all the time), and the customer service is lacking in friendliness. The thing that bothers me the most is that I'm paying $40 plus tip on just a wash for my dog and he comes back smelling like nothing!!! He stinks again in one-two days. They say they can spray him with a parfum for an additional price but why should I pay extra if I'm paying $40 to have him bathed. He should smell good! Then again, this is a hourly position for a corporate company so don't expect the workers to care. Second time my dog comes home from petco grooming- they cut her EYE. To the point I brought home a squinting dog this is after treating my entire house for 400+ in flea treatments after her last petco grooming visit. When I called to speak to a supervisor- they changed the notes to say my dog got an EYELASH in her eye and she used her nails to scratch her eye. Bs. This groomer called my mother apologizing up and down for cutting her eye and was trying to rush her to their vet and my mom denied because she wanted to be able to see her dog first. Needless to say; they refunded the grooming and paid for the cost of the vet visit but no one covered the flea cost. These employees are so ignorant, improperly trained and lie after the fact to cover themselves with legal paperwork which is why they say one thing on the phone and another in the paperwork. A supervisor was never even informed of my dogs eye wound even though it was so serious they were going to bring her to the vet that moment. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I mean unless you wait to pay 400+ to treat your entire house with fleas because they don't properly sanitize their equipment, or your dog has a missing eye from a slip of shears; by all means continue going here but I downright refuse to ever take my dogs. I ask to have my bigger dogs nails cut with two employees and I look back to see my dog flipping out on the table being thrown around. She's never been back because they can't follow simple instructions and lie to cover themselves. read more

I've had a couple of very negative experiences with this store and today's experience shows how ridiculously lazy some of their staff is. A while back I called the Petco Hodgkins store to see if they had pill pushers in stock that were sold on their web site. The Hodgkins associate I spoke to politely offered to look in their system to see if they carried the item and what quantity they show as available. That was an example of excellent service by one Petco store. Today I went to the Hillside store as I was in that area and I was looking for the same item. I asked an associate, Luis, if he had the item, I told him another one of their stores carries it so perhaps theirs does to. He said he didn't think they sold anything like that. I asked him if he could check his inventory system, like the Hodgkins store had done for me. He kept telling me that just because they sell an item on line, it doesn't mean they sell it in the store. I reiterated to him again, that it is sold in your retail stores. Can you check for me? This was an older, little Oriental man. I don't know if the problem is that he doesn't know how to use their inventory management system, but he should. I asked him where the store manager was. He went over and talked to him and he said he didn't think they carried it either. By this time I was very irritated with the lack of effort on the part of both Luis and his manager to look for the item and to check their inventory of it. I disguistedly went to the checkout counter to pay for the pet food I was buying and I told the cashier that I was unhappy with the service I was receiving today. She offered to look for the item herself and came back two minutes later with it. IT'S RIDICULOUS THAT THE STORE MANAGER AND LUIS COULD NOT DO THIS. IT TOOK A CASHIER TO LEAVE HER CASH REGISTER AND SEVERAL PEOPLE WAITING IN LINE BEHIND ME, TO FIND THE PRODUCT. I went back and told Luis and the store manager that they do carry the item they insisted they did not carry. They both seemed rather indifferent and did not apologize for their laziness. I filed a complaint with Petco at the corporate level. As I told the representative I talked to on the phone, when a customer is looking for a item like a pill pusher, it is because they have a pet at home who is hard to medicate. I needed that product and I didn't want to have to drive 1/2 hour to the Hodgkins store again to get it. This is the 2nd time I've experienced a ridiculously lazy example of customer service from the Hillside store. As I told the Petco Customer Service Rep I filed the complaint with over the phone, when retail stores close and go out of business, alot of people blame it on the economy. Often it's because the stores are poorly managed and the quality of staff is poor, like Luis and his store manager. After two visits to purchase dog food, I will NEVER use PetCo in Hillside again! I urge everyone not to shop there. The first time, I noticed that the ferrets' cage had empty water bottles ... while the animals were desperately licking and licking, I notified a staff member. After my purchase, I went back into the store and checked... no water. I notified the manager ... and was treated like ______ fill in the blank. On the second visit, I noticed a stone-faced blonde woman groomer working on a small grey dog. Attempting to trim his nails, she grabbed his paw and the pooch withdrew.. she just held tight to his paw as he completely contorted his body, trying to to get away from her. Because of the way she constrained him, he was yelping out in pain. She just kept yanking his leg --- he kept yelping. Her approach and her facial expression never changed --- it was evident that she could not care less about the care she was to give this little customer. I spoke up but ... well, I was treated like ________fill in the blank. This happened on June 15th, 2014 in the afternoon. If it was your dog, take heed! I won't give them a third chance. I also don't want to witness any more people or animal abuse. With the unemployment rate it just seems to me that skilled, caring, professional, and willing workers are out there that PetCo can hire! Wow, did they ever raise their prices!! We have been taking our small dog (16 lbs.) in for grooming for about a year. The first time was great but we were told that groomer was no longer there when we returned. From then on, the cuts were never what we wanted. This time we went in, provided specific instructions on the trimming, none of which was done. They also kept him for 8 hours! I know Saturdays must be busy, but they were the ones who booked the Saturday appointment. Apparently they just make the appointment automatically, then call the day before to let you know. Their customer service is nonchalant and horrible! It was Christmas Eve and my daughter needed hay for her guinea pigs. I looked in the website and says that it will close at 7. My daughter gets there at 6:30. She said that the store was already closed and she wasn't going back. I had to call the store to ask the manger why the store was closed. He said that one of his workers "accidentally" thought that the store closed and locked the doors. He said that he would unlock the doors. I got there at 6:50. As I was looking around, the worker asked me could she help me with anything because the store is closed. Not only did you lock the doors early, but you rushed me to get out once I got there. Rude customer service. The only reason why I shop here is because I live down the street from this location. If I don't have to come back here, I won't. Grooming is a huge part of taking care of my Samoyed. I have taken my fluff ball to get groomed here since he was 12 weeks old, he is now 2 yrs old. They are very flexible on scheduling and I can call that same day and get scheduled to take my dog in for a grooming. Alex, the manager, is especially accommodating and knowledgable about dogs and grooming. You can tell she loves her job. The groomers do a good job overall they give him to my white, clean, combed and cut. There have been times he comes home a little moist but I spoke to Alex and she let me know it is not ok and to just let her know if it happened again and that she would speak to whoever was responsible. I really appreciated that! , I do have to give complete props to Simba's groomers, I have personally groomed my dog and know how much time and labor it is to get him clean, combed, and dry. That is why he here about every month! To conclude, this is a convenient, clean and flexible place to get your pet groomed! I would say the price for grooming is average to other places I have tried! They have also stayed after hours to get Simba just right. This shows me they care and take their job seriously! read more

Super friendly and helpful staff. Since last October, I visit this store weekly to help care for the cats up for adoption through Magnificent Mutts Rescue. I am at the store for one hour in the evening so I observe a lot of customer and staff interactions. The majority of customers leave the store with the items they were looking for and seem happy with the service they have received. It has a small store feel to it and the majority of their staff loves animals and have their own pets at home. A couple of tips - the store only carries male rodents and guinea pigs. The shopping carts are to your right when you enter the store - they are past the cat condos. I love the groomers at Petco in Hillside. Shayna & Alex are amazing groomers. First of all I was so happy to know they were open on new years day because it was literally the only day I had available to take my 2 year old toy poodle. He is normally a problem doggie and needs breaks during his grooming sessions and the folks at petco are so patient with him. When I picked him up he was so well groomed and they even placed on him a cute doggy tie that made my heart melt. Shayna and alex are awesome and you can tell they truely love animals. This Petco is fantastic! I took my special education classroom here for a field trip last April 2015. All staff members collaborated to make the field trip possible. They answered my many questions beforehand and helped us plan our field trip. On the day of the field trip, all staff members were helpful. Many of my students are nonverbal and/or were adjusting to the change in environment. We were taken to each animal station by a staff member. The kids had the opportunity to pet various animals. They loved it! Plus, we were able to have art and motor activities set up in the corner. I was allowed to come the night before to set up. Overall, all staff members were incredibly accommodating to our needs! Most importantly, the students had the chance to gain necessary community skills and had the chance to learn more about animals! read more

I do not recommend the dog grooming at this Petco. I have NEVER had problems with my dog getting groomed. I dropped off my small dog at 10:30AM and was told he would be done at 2PM. I called at 2PM and the groomer just started working on him. She said she would call when he was ready, but I just showed up at 2:45. I heard him yelping several times. My dog never yelps unless someone accidentally steps on his foot. This tells me he was in pain. He has been licking his paws and stomach nonstop. I can't bring myself to look at see if he has been cut b/c I feel terrible. I was told by the groomer that she wasn't even going to attempt to cut his toenails. This is part of the fee and my dog is not bad. He clearly did not feel comfortable b/c she was not treating him well. I will never go back to this place. I give it an F--! read more

I have a sht zu poodle mix.I should've stopped taking my dog after the second time the screwed up. Before petco I was taking my dog to a place called happy hound. They did the job right and shaved my dog the way I wanted. But the neighbor she was in sucked. It was very scary and sorry to say ghetto..like really up there. So I started to take my dog to petco. First time they did an alright work wasn't what I wanted but it would do. He smelled a day later then I noticed that one half of his hair was shorter then the other. So me thinking maybe it was just an off day for the stylest give them another shot.. No took my dog back their three other times same crappy cut. Short on side long on the other side the trimmed his face all retarted!! I kept telling them i wanted my dogs face shaved allong with his face because it was around summer n my dog loves to be outside. Never in my life am going back. They obviously don't care for how I wanted my dogs hair to look. And even after me complaining and even telling them that each time it was really bad they disregarded my feelings. What an unacceptable experience today! I had a 4pm groom appointment for my dog when I brought her in they said this is your groomer he will take her, 1.5 hours later I called to check in they said she wouldn't be ready till 8!!!! I asked how is that possible I was told it was busy it was the holiday season and they were behind and when I said it's unacceptable my dog is sitting in a kennel for hours and hours she said ok come pick her up!! So when I picked her up the groomer they said was going to groom her wasn't even there anymore and they acted and said I should know it's going to be that long! When I dropped her off they should have said we are behind do you want to come back or let us know something but no communication and it was my fault!! My husband and I have a 5 month old lab and have taken him into this location since we bought him. Every time we come in the two trainers remember us and ask us how things are going with him. We take our pup to the "puppy play time" every Sunday to socialize him. This is extremely helpful to us because the trainers let us know what is healthy socialization and what behaviors show aggression. We've never never used the grooming services but we also see pups being well taken care of. read more

This Petco is horrible. Allison is rude and professional. She refused to take my name, address and dog's for a walk in. I asked her three times does she need anything else. She curtly said no, then she instructed me to bring in proof of rabies vaccine. When I returned at 11am promptly, I was left standing at the check in. Another rude employee, Anthony strolls by after 15 minutes, asks for my dogs name, I told him that the girl, Allison didn't take it because she claimed she would be here. He goes in the back to look for her returns after another 10 minutes and says dryly she will be out. I am waiting for another 10 minutes and the manager, Alex, says she will be out she is rinsing a dog. So, I wait. After 10 more minutes, this girl, Allison strolls over. She does not apologize. Just says, your name, dogs name....then says did you bring proof of rabies. I show it to her. She says, "Oh, well this was given today, has to be we need to wait 24 hours." I patiently reschedule for another groomer and she seems incredibly shocked. I then ask her for the company policy stating this. She refuses to give it to me. I ask her why she didn't tell me this before when I originally presented at 9am. She then became belligerent, violent and rude. I told her she was rude and needed to work on her customer service skills. At this point, she became irate and violent and had to be told to walk away by her manager. Allison, of course, didn't even listen to her manager and remained arguing with a customer. I am shocked this Petco remains open and hires such mentally unstable employees. read more

My dog just came back from PetCo Grooming in Hillside with bloody abrasions on her skin. We initially called the groomer to find out what happened, and Miguel, one of the groomers, lied to us and told us there was no blood anywhere in their store, so her injury must have occurred after we left. We returned to PetCo to speak to a manager after seeing the extent of the irritation, and lo and behold, as soon as we walked in the door, we saw and documented blood all over the floor and grooming station. The other groomer on staff, Allison, could not have been more rude or dismissive--zero accountability and no apology or concern for our dog. This is not surprising, as she was also quite rude and unhelpful when we initially dropped our dogs off for grooming. She also lied and said that she didn't see blood on the dog or in the store--again, we have photo and video documentation of it. We now are taking our poor dog to an emergency vet because of the recklessness of these employees. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

I decided to try this place out and as soon as I walked in, I wanted to run out with my dog. This place is not only filthy but the customer service is awful. When I called and made my appointment the girl over the phone said "I don't know one too many times." When I dropped off my dog, I asked about a special the store was running, she said she didn't know. I showed her the ad, she then said she knew nothing about. I met the groomer and didn't bother asking about special, I was too focused on making sure I didn't miss him as he was walking away from my simple requests, such as trimming around the ears, which he Did NOT do. I asked for the trimming of the ears, short puppy cut and to have her anal glands expressed. Did he do any of that? Nope. Instead, my dog still had hair all over her, I was charged 3.00 for bows in which I did not request and they fell off inside the store, her beard looked like it had been half shaved off, her ears were not cleaned as he said he would and her paws were messy and to top it all off her nails were not filed. I would rather drive an hour away for her regular groomer vs crappy service that's close to home. read more
