Petco, Hickory

I used up the last of the "special" dog food for their dinner instead of saving it for feeding them their medications. Oops. Bad me. So we now need to get more of the "special" instead of waiting for the regular shipment to arrive in three days. Petco is the only big box that sells this specific brand so we detoured slightly out of our way to pop into here. The store is tidy, organized by species (cats, dogs, fish, other small animals) and then the aisles are neatly laid out. A little bit of searching and we found the specific stuff we wanted. 1 star to the 10 year old that was clearly trying to piss off his mother (and everyone else within earshot) by squeak-squeak-squeaking one of the squeezie toys over and over. Yes, the store had exactly what we wanted. But it was a good 50% more expensive than the same purchase online. You're definitely paying for the convenience here. This is the sign right above the feeder fish. Notice it says fish make a great family pet.

So tonight my daughter, grand daughter, great grand daughter and I went into the Hickory Petco to buy fish. For two years my son in law battled a rare cancer, there are mounting medical bills that may never be paid off. This past Sunday he passed away in Hospice. We had to deal with his arrangements. Anyone who has ever gone through this knows how expensive it is. My great grand daughter who is 3 had a simple request, she wanted some fish to go in her fish tank. My grand daughter was waiting by the tank and when no one came I went to ask for assistance. The young lady stepped out from behind the counter to head toward the fish and then asked me what we were going to do with the fish and if we were going to feed them to something. I said no. At that point she informed me that Petco would not sell me the fish. She said that they only sell them to people who are going to feed them to something and not as pets, because they are poor quality. I told her I wouldn't be trying to return any dead fish. I even spoke with the manager on duty who informed me of the same policy and also told me that they never sell a live pet 20 minutes before closing. Mind you I have a turtle and have always bought feeder fish here and yes sometimes right at closing. Since when does a business have a right first of all to not sell someone an item that is for sale? This policy is discriminating against the poor who may not be able to afford to pay for the more expensive fish. So tonight my 3 year old great grand daughter went home unhappy because we couldn't afford to spend a lot on fish and that is all she wanted. Petco broke a little 3 year old's heart tonight.

Sierra was awesome with our puppy. I was a little nervous when I was dropping her, Sierra was very kind and gained her trust. I felt much better leaving her for her spa day. Thank you Sierra!

What an amazing amount of products to choose from. I found the perfect brand of dog food for my best friend to enjoy. And enjoy she did.

Paw Tales - Something that should of never happened in the first place...

Today is the first and last time I will use this facility for my dog. We just moved here from…read moreBoston. My dog (55lbs) has been boarded and in daycare/daycamp in Maryland, Seattle, and Boston where we have previously lived. He is not new to this. He was going for his daycare evaluation and a bath. He loves going to daycare and is well socialized. I have never had an issue with his behavior in any of his former daycares. (I have yet to pick him up from his bath, hopefully all went well there. I can only comment on the daycare eval). In his notes I specified "he does NOT like golden retrievers. Not even a little. Do not place him with goldens." I also specified he can become over stimulated and will need a time out/break after too much play time. I made sure to tell this to the person who was taking him for his evaluation day too. Fast forward to this afternoon, I get the phone call that I was correct. He does not like golden retrievers and gets "triggered" by them. I was notified he was barking at other dogs and humping them. They then told me that he would not be able to participate in daycare there until he gets some training. (Um, he's had 2 levels of training). I verified with the person who spoke with me "So, you placed him with golden retriever(s) after I SPECIFICALLY put it in his notes he cannot be around them, AND I told you this when I dropped him off?" She replied "Yes. Because they do not have the facilities to keep him away from a specific dog or dog types in daycare". (Maybe that should have been disclosed to me???). I would not have dropped him off. I asked why he could not have been placed with the smaller dogs or given a break because he was overstimulated? Apparently that was not thought of. The Pawtales person I spoke with did tell me he could try again after he got some additional training. I'm pretty sure their personnel need some training.... I'm not interested in a facility that is willing to put dogs in danger by not listening to the owners who know them best. We trust these facilities to have dog knowledge and understand dog body language, and listen to those who know them best. This facility is definitely not that place. Do not trust your dog with them.

Virtually each time we visited this Hickory location, there was at least one employee who was unprofessional or downright rude. As I recall during all these visits, we only felt the need to ask one question on one occasion about the availability and location of a product and was led to it but were left to feel as though it had been a burden for the employee. It was a very large bag of kibble, and although we could manage carrying it to checkout ourselves, it would have been nice for at least an offer to have been made for assistance. All of the other experiences involved rude employees stepping between us and products on the shelves, reaching over us while we were trying to look at or retrieve a product while "assisting another customer," and just a general atmosphere that employees would rather be anywhere but there. We then decided that perhaps we should try ordering online and picking up in the store to avoid the unpleasantness. Well, that didn't work out very well either. PetSmart has A LOT of work to do in getting their app user friendly and reliable. The incentives offered for online shopping are also a joke because they exclude most, if not all, well-known and trusted brands. Unfortunately, with all of the options available both online and in-store for meeting our pet's needs, PetSmart has done absolutely nothing competitively "smart" to secure our ongoing business.
