We asked for help in the fish department and they said they would call someone. We waited without assistance. When we went back to ask again, they said it was too close to closing. this store is very dirty and there are a lot of products missing on the shelves. they have Guinea pigs and rats that look sick. There is one Guinea pig that has some kind of rash or something on his skin. this is a problem and should be reported. the outside of the store is extremely dirty. There is bird feces and trash everywhere. the trash cans outside of the store are full of garbage and spilling onto the floor. staff completely ignored us. I don't recommend. read more

Unfortunately my dog never got seen by the groomer. They were 20 minutes late. The groomer never came out to tell me how much longer. The front desk was busy on the phone the entire time. So after 20 minutes I left. Very poor front desk communication. It would've been no problem if they had come out and said we're running 20 minutes or more behind. I could've left, run some errands and come back. But standing around waiting for 20 minutes, plus loud music playing throughout the store, and still not being seen reflects poorly on how they might treat my dog. read more

Man this place is a death trap! You're better off parking across the way in front of Luckys. During peak hours which could be any time between 12 and 7 everyday there's a ton of traffic that goes through this little alley. And if you even try to risk going through you'll probably have an 80% chance of almost getting hit by someone backing out of a parking space. Whoever designed this parking spot must have thought it would be funny to watch people squeeze their way through here! Actually this whole entire plaza was designed pretty poorly. But this Petco actually carries the brand of cat food I like to feed my cats so once a month I have to deal with the crazy drivers and pedestrians. read more

I've been coming here for about 5 years and nothing has changed! Everytime there's a half dead animal. It takes basic research to care for a beardie. Why would you work at a pet store and not properly care for the animals? I was there 14 minutes and this baby beardie didn't move a muscle he's very sick. I used to buy my cat's wet food here but found Costco has a much better deal. Today I was in the plaza and decided to go in to get a water filter for my cat's gravity water dish..something I had purchased there before. I found the isle with filters but couldn't find the one for the dish I own. I went to look for a sales associate.. made eye contact with one in another isle and she literally turned around and walked the opposite way. Okayyy...i will try someone else.. I went to the sales clerk who was finishing with one person and asked her for help finding the filter I needed. She said "if it's not on the floor, it's not carried in store." Since they carry the exact dish I own I could not believe they don't carry filter replacements. She said she would come help me in a minute. So i waited.. and waited. And while waiting I found the replacement filter pack i needed! I took it to buy at the counter with the sales clerk that never came to help and had an instinct to check online for prices. Guess what! For $9 Amazon sells a 12 PACK of the same filters Petco sells for also $9 but only 3 of them! BYE Petco! All the surrounding tanks have clouded water as well, but no warning signs are put up anywhere to confirm that they are doing something about it, and customers shouldn't buy the fish in these tanks. This review is for the groomers inside this location- Brought my almost 5 month old Minnie here for a Puppy package after her first walk to get cleaned up. They took me at the last minute which was nice and appreciated, about an hour before they closed, which is about how long her services took. The pup package was only $23 pretty good deal, for bath, blow dry, fragrance, nail trim & bow. She smelled like a baby when I got her back, but they forgot the bow & didn't have any products to clean her tear stains which was something I really wanted. They were good to her & were playing with her when I got back. I would return, but only if I can't find a location that removes tear stains. read more

Very discouraging how these people approach their customers. A group of friends and I brought in our dogs to work on their manners and the staff kicked us out. They said our dogs were off leash which they weren't and if they go back and check their cameras they will see that no one ever removed the dog's leashes. Very upsetting as these dogs are service dogs in training and are therefore covered by Civil Code Sections 54-55.32 in California- allows people training service dogs to bring them into public places for the purpose of training a disability-related service. The dogs need training which is why we came in- would have thought Petco would support this. Also extremely humiliating that the staff knocked us out with an announcement to the whole store rather than simply coming to speak with us directly. Will not be coming back. read more

If I could put 0 reviews. I would. I took a long time to write this review due to me seeing if my puppy will get over it. My puppy has gone here 3 times. And this is the only place we've sent her to touch her nails in any way possible: we have never tried to cut her nails ever at our house. The last time she has gone here, she was terrified of getting her nails clipped. She doesn't let anybody get near her nails. I think it's because they clipped her to bad , or to close to her blood vessel. They called us saying my puppy was biting them due to them touching her nails. I felt embarrassed at first, but than a puppy who never bites their owner, she started to bite me while I touched her nails as well. So what should I do? They said they will write me up ( my puppy ) because of her trying to bite the groomers. But is it our fault ? Or is it there's. We never touched her nails or paws in any way possible. And I know my puppy would never act aggressive unless it's a valid reason too. read more

This review is for the grooming... I've never encountered a groomer who lacks basic ettiequte. I took my very small dog to get her nails clipped. Simple 5 minute procedure. This groomer proceeded to inform me that I needed to leave the room in order for her to clip her nails which I politely declined because my dog is not nervous and it's not a very big deal. So this groomer then clipped a couple more nails and stopped... she again requested that I leave the area because my presence was making her nervous. As I informed her the first time of my stance on that, I ignored her request and tried to verbally comfort my dog from where I was standing. My dog was perfectly fine. The only nervous/agitated energy was coming from this groomer. So she finished the job without incident then decided to tell me that I should not bring my dog TO HER the next time I needed service. This is where this exchange became totally unacceptable. I don't bring my dog TO HER. I bring my dog to PETCO! This groomer just happens to work for PETCO! I will be sure to call ahead and see which groomer is on staff before I schedule another appointment. To this groomer number 003 Nicole you are in a CUSTOMER SERVICE POSITION if you do not know how to conduct yourself in a professional courteous manner then perhaps you should look for different employment as you do not have the right or position to tell customers not to bring their pets to you... when you WORK FOR PETCO!!!! They have basically all the pet stuff you need and the staff are very helpful and friendly. However, about 3/5 of the time, whenever I purchase fish or other aquatic animals they end up dying within 48 hours, and it's inconsistent. I also don't trust the water quality of their tanks as dead fish are not uncommon to be floating around their tanks. read more

Love this store and there seems to always be parking. I will break this down into 2 different categories, instore experience and phone experience. I enjoy that the minute you walk in, there is a calendar with all upcoming classes and sessions for people to look at. Next the dog trainer here, Martha is great and always super helpful! She is very responsive via text and answers all kinds of questions. You can also combine coupons for the trainings which is fabulous. My dogs love coming here as well. They are fairly overpriced compared to petsmart. They do nail trims for 10 and 5 for buffing. You can do drop in, and they can do it easily. I like doing it there because I see my dog react and I know if he is okay or not. read more

I was using their grooming services for my two dogs for a little over a year now because it is so close to my house so it made it really convenient. However they seem to have a serious issue with personnel and staffing coverage. My past 2-3 appointments they had to cancel and reschedule due to their groomers calling in sick I guess. I can understand that but the problem is they don't let me know until THE DAY OF the appointment. I've had to rearrange my entire day because I make plans ahead of time to get my dogs ready only to have it all cancelled on me. Very, very frustrating and as I said, this has occurred about 2-3 times in the past 8 months. I'm not using their grooming services anymore because of this. read more

Grooming rule- per store leader, they will not take any dog on medications other than aspirin unless 24 hours have passed because staff don't know how to monitor dogs. They try to use the excuse of putting pets and their safety first. My dog was on cbd oil for seizures and they turned us away. So the logic is they would rather take my dog while off medication and likely to have a seizure while in their care than when she's controlled on a medication. Doesn't make sense to me, wasted my morning. PETCO: Consider changing your rules so they are realistic and make sense. I would think putting pets first would be making sure their medical conditions are controlled. read more

Petco gets some bad reviews but I have to say that Vanessa and Lee Anne have never let me down! My Pomeranian is on point after a session with them and they genuinely care about his experience. They actually gave me a great suggestion to wash my little boy prior to coming to get groomed bc he hated the dryer so it would take longer because they wanted him to air dry to avoid the stress. They discount the service since I wash him myself and it takes less than half the time! I'm grateful for them and their nonjudgmental attitudes. Some places I brought him before made me feel so bad because he wasn't brushed out. Not these guys, they may have to charge me an extra $10 for matting, but it's not the judgement. I went here to get my cat his biannual haircut. The groomer convinced me to get the shortest length as that would make his coat look smoother and "less choppy". However when he came out of the haircut, his fur was really uneven and choppy. She claimed he was a very difficult cat to groom and that he was hostile/resistant, but my cat is the most passive cat I've even known (and I know how squirmy the average cat is... they should be able to handle the average cat and my cat is so passive that you can pick him up/do anything to him and he won't do anything about it). All in all I don't think the service was worth the price and I'd be better off spending a little bit more for a better haircut. read more

Dropped my dog off @ 9:45am for a 10 am grooming appointment. They couldn't find my appointmet but said it was OK as it wasn't busy. Asked how long they said 3 hrs. I'm fine with that. At 2pm I called 4x to see if he's done.... Voicemail. No answer. Call the regular store. No answer. Drove there at 3:15 and they say "they haven't got to him" and to come back in an hour. My dog was shaved but not groomed. Sat in a cage all day. When I say I have to go pick up my kids from school and can't really wait they decide to bring over the manager. He just keeps shaking his head and says he's sorry. Anyways I didn't pay but now my dog looks half shaven and quite possible the worst haircut I've ever seen on a dog. All the women working there were super defensive. Overall a pretty crappy experience. read more

Let me start off by saying that every animal that my friends and I have ever gotten here have died quick and sudden deaths, be it a mouse or a fish. I'm talking about within a week. Why is that? And you can't really refund a dead animal. And why is it that when my friend, who is clearly older than 18, bought a mouse, they checked her ID. Yet, another friend's jackass 14 year old brother and his friends were able to buy five betta fishes at this Petco to fight each other without incident. They all ended up killing each other. It was horrible and so sad :( Sometimes when my friends and I are bored, we come in here to ooooh and ahhhh over the animals, but we don't buy anything unless we really have to. Customer service is a hit or miss here. It's a pretty common occurrence to see dead fish floating in their tanks. One time, we even saw a couple of dead goldfish lying on the sidewalk right in front of their sliding doors. Huh??? If I could give this place 0 stars, I definitely would. But since I have to give it one star, I will qualify that star because I did get my two rats here aout 6 months ago and they are doing well. Other than that though, this is the worst pet store in the history of man kind. Don't go here! If you need to get a pet or food for your pet, go to PetSmart - because it was the caring people at PetSmart who explained to my roommate and I why our pet hamster that we go at PetCo died after only three days. SOOOOOO when we went back to PetCo to try to get our money back for the poor hamster (RIP Rosie, this is for you) they said that they could not do that unless we brought the dead hamster with us. SERSIOUSLY? I asked the nimwit employe, THAT IS DISGUSTING!!!!! To make matters worse, the sales people were not sympathetic at all about our loss. In fact, they were straight up RUDE. The manager said that she didn't have time to deal with this (right in front of us) and went back to counting money. Moral of the story: PETCO in El Cerrito is the dumps. Petco shares some characteristics with The Home Depot. The have a ton of stuff for almost anything your pet could need, they have cool prices and they have lots of locations. The problem with Petco is the same problem with The Home Depot: the associates. If you get help from someone who knows what they are talking about, and who cares about animals, you'll have a great experience. If you get someone who just works there because they weren't qualified to get a job at McDonalds, and those people exist, usually around the fish department, then you'll leave wondering why Petco doesn't just hire chimpanzees. They're much more entertaining, and probably more helpful Luckily, I've come across more of the former type of employee, so I'd still recommend going there. read more

Petco--where the pets go! It is A-OK. The Mother and I were not too impressed the last time we were here. She wanted to get a new collar for Bianco who recently became our new doggy. It was a challenge looking at the selection of collars and leashes. It is a challenge looking at the collar selection. First, collars and leashes are jammed together. It is quite hard trying to remove a collar for a close perusal. The set-up seems to deter shoplifters though. The Mother was about to give up when I found the collar she wanted for Bianco: 1/2" wide black collar with a black buckle that one presses to release on both sides. This place used to have a great dog wardrobe selection. I quite enjoyed the Petco sweatshirts. Dolce inherited those and other dog clothes from one of our previous little dogs. Vests, sweaters, and rain capes galore. The current selection leaves much to be desired, too cute, frilly, and girly for our tastes. Dolce and Bianco seemed to be sporty types--so strong, heavy duty made dog clothes would suit them much better. Though I am not sure if we will get Bianco groomed here. I do not get a good vibe when I have walked by the grooming section while entering the store. I concur that service here is hit or miss. We have not had anything that would irritate yours truly here to call their corporate offices to give them a piece of her (my) mind. I have a feeling they or corporate are taking note of the Yelp! reviews. We have been treated nicely by most of them. I really appreciated one associate's assistance when she informed us of the new, improved, and upgraded Petco Pals Reward program. We will still come to shop at Petco. Petco is the Safeway of the human world. It isn't the Berkeley Bowl, Trader Joe's or even the Target/Cosco crowd. Petco is what it is... a giant warehouse, converted to move pet supplies from far away places to your pet. It covers basics and though I've been in one which provides not only bathing, but kennels, grooming, hospitals, pet selling and even training. This El Cerrito pet store is what it is.. a pet store. One would hope that your pet gets what is needed at all hours of the day. If you don't have a pet and need to meet some, drop by any Petco as all pets are allowed into them. read more

Awful service. We went in, looking for on-sale dog treats and a "floating magnet" type fishtank cleaner. All the treats were at least $5 a bag and none were on sale, not even the PupPeroni junk food treats that I can buy next door at Lucky's for $2.99. We asked one customer service rep if they did price matching. She said, yes, when we got to the check-out stand and showed the competitor's price the employee told us that they "never do price matching off the internet, because internet prices are always lower." PetCo was charging $9 more for the fishtank cleaner than the ad we had and they would not match it. Poor service combined with high prices and misinformed employees = one star rating. Wow wow wow. Man, Yelp seriously has to invest in a "zero star" rating system. Do NOT--and I repeat for emphasis--do NOT EVER take your dog here to be groomed. The staff is trained in grooming via a WEB PAGE (this from the grooming station manager) and if that isn't bad enough, the woman we dealt with today was just...sadistic. Seriously. My already nervous GSD was mistreated, jerked around on that horrible plastic leash thing, and only cursorily groomed for what came out to $50 after tax. In addition, the groomer was seriously RUDE and deeply WEIRD. (The woman has deep, deep issues, apparently, that really ought not to be worked out on your beloved animal.)
