This pet store has basic supplies for most animal owners. I typically bring my kids here so they can look at the animals while I'm picking up stuff for our beta. Not the nicest pet store around, however has the stuff I need for our terrarium and freshwater aquarium. I been coming in to this pet store since Monday getting my puppy his second set of vaccines, ask one of grooming ladies about pricing and age on grooming, and she said I had to wait 24hrs so they can trim my puppy nails. I did! I'm here and they won't take him they said now I have to wait until he his 16 weeks!! I am really disappointed and I felt they miss treated me.... love the VET CLINIC AND THE STORE...NOT SO MUCH ABOUT THE GROOMING PERSONNEL!!! I spent almost $100 on fish and supplies from this Petco in Covington. The blue lobster that I bought died around 3 weeks later. I brought in the dead lobster since Petco guarantees fish for 30 days. They asked me how long ago I bought the lobster and I told them 2 or 3 wks. I did not have a receipt but they looked up the purchase on my pals account. After around 15 minutes of trying to get skew numbers, the customer service rep comes back and says that they have no record of selling a blue lobster within the last 30 days and I cannot return it. I looked puzzled because I knew for a fact that it was not over 30 days. I continued to let her know that I bought the aquarium after maple valley days where my son won a goldfish. So it couldn't possibly be over 30 days. It got very awkward and I felt like everyone was looking at me as a liar. She said she has to go by what the computer says. I left the store and immediately searched my car for the receipt. (Keep in mind that I have now wasted 30 minutes of my life for a $6.99 lobster!) Lo and behold I found the receipt in my car with it dated 3 weeks ago! Apparently, their computers are not very reliable!LOL I went back in and wanted my money back instead of store credit knowing that I would never step foot in a Petco again. Finally, I got my refund of $6.99 and Petco lost a customer for life. read more

We had an unfortunate experience with the dog trainer who has completely changed our opinion on the Petco Covington store. The lack of costumer service she displayed with loud open criticism when we forgot to bring the puppy shot book with us created an embarrassing situation where we did not want to return. Rather than asking us to step aside for a private discussion Amy chose to dismiss us in front of the entire class. When I called afterwards to ask for a refund for the class John advised it could only be provided with a receipt and visit to the store. Clearly they knew we paid as we were enrolled for the class having received a reminder call at 7:30pm the night before. I asked if they could look up my PALS card and the phone was handed over to Amy without any mention of my call getting handed over to the trainer. Amy proceeded to tell me that the shot records were needed. I advised I had them in my hand. Amy then said we could attend the next class. I advised that the experience of being humiliated in front of everyone was so unsettling that we wished to receive a refund. Amy said the only way that was possible was with a receipt and continued to argue that we just need to bring in the proof of shots. Sadly she completely missed the point that her actions and how she handled the situation made us not wish to return. I asked to speak to the manager and what his name was. She said Josh. I asked if he was is in and Amy advised he wasn't but would be in at some point in the day. The class was at 10am. My call to John and then Amy was 11am. I did not receive a follow-up call. A few things went wrong here. The first, do not publicly humiliate a customer. Second, don't argue with the customer about a different issue than what the complaint is about. Third, why not mention the Confirmation Number which is emailed could be used for the refund or in-store credit. Last point, call the customer when they have asked for a call. These are all reasons why we will not be shopping at the Petco Covington store. We returned today with the receipt and obtained a full refund. read more

Called for a nail trim and they couldn't be bothered to even answer as to whether I could bring our pet in. Asked if I could make an appointment and they said no. What? Just no? Not today? Not ever? GROOMING SALON REVIEW - Is it just me or can anyone else see right through the clear glass window as you walk into Petco that these animals being groomed are being abused in the worse sense of the word? Right out in the open! Stand and watch for a few minutes (that's about all you will be able to stand) and you will turn around in disbelief that an owner would knowingly drop their beloved pet off just so their pet could be viciously brushed, trimmed with clippers that are most certainly dull because they pull so brutally. I don't think these owners must know because they must not stick around to watch. Honestly I have never seen in open view such a tragic showing of miserable girls who hate their jobs while grooming these innocent pets. It's cruelty. read more

For years, I've been taking my dogs to the Covington Petco for food, accessories and grooming. The staff there has always been attentive, and Petco seems to have plenty of the food and other products I'm looking for. Unfortunately, in the last several months attitudes at the store seem to have changed. Grooming appointments take longer and longer to get. Or when I call in I'm put on hold ("for a few seconds") and forgotten. It's gotten to the point where there are just too many dog grooming stores in the area to put up with being treated like that. read more

Just make sure to ask how long your groomer has been grooming. They really should let you know that most if not all of their staff has been grooming for weeks or months and training on your dog. You should get school prices since your dog is a guinea pig. My dog still had sap between her toes and still had eye boogers when I got her back and the haircut was really choppy looking and her head looked like Gumby. Nice girls for the most part but high priced sloppy grooms. Go to an independent mom and pop place or a mobile, they are trained much better. read more

I had a pretty happy pet adoption at this petco location a couple years back. Me and my sweetie both agreed to get me a new pet, a Hamster and went straight to petco. We didn't know there was a small critter adoption event going on and i was super excited. There was only 3 left. 2 Hamsters, one Gerbil. I loved the little Robo hamster and picked him. The employee who helped me through his adoption process was very informative, talkative and i was left happy to have stopped by. We asked him questions like where did they come from, what happened? How to take care of them (even tho i've had small critters since i was young) I wanted to know what he knew and to see if at all, he was truly a pet person. And he was. He said the critters were from previous owners who sadly gave them up and needed a second chance. They also had a low adoption fee. So it was a good time to suddenly come in looking for a hamster. Since i've only been here a couple times, i can't give a great and through review but just know that i like this petco better than at other locations just because i could find what i was looking for, staff was friendly and the store was spacious and clean. read more

I've gotten quite a few fish from here. I had a tank with 2 female bettas that I bought from them, and decided to add in a new snail, and two other fish. I was told they would all do very well together. Two days later and both of my bettas (that I've had for months) were dead, and one of the new fish was dead as well. The snail was dead by the time I brought it home. Went in to get my money back and they wouldn't do anything about the betta fish that were killed by the diseased fish they had just sold me. This isn't the first time I've gotten diseased fish from them either. Incredibly unhappy with this store and their lack of responsibility for my pets that are now dead because of their carelessness in treating their tanks. read more

This review is for grooming dept - When I walked in with my pup, there was a woman at the counter eating a snack (whatever, I don't care about that), I was greeted with, "who is this? " Not even a hello. I told her and she went to get the groomer. When the groomer came out (Amanda), she didn't even look at me, she just asked me what I wanted done. I proceeded to tell her what I'd like, and last time I had him groomed (at a different location) it was too short for my liking. She tossed the length swatches on the table and said, "I can do any of these or longer". I chose the length and she took my dog. I felt more like I was inconviencing her more than anything, like I was annoying her because I had scheduled an appointment to get my dog groomed. Don't get me wrong, he looked stinkin' adorable when I got him and I applaud her for that, but her attitude towards me left me feeling uneasy leaving him with her. I work in retail where I deal with people all the time. I at least fake being happy if need be. Or maybe she was just having a bad day, I don't know! I am unsure whether or not I will return to this location again. read more

I bought my kids two hamsters here and my son's worked out great, my daughter's, not so much. It made noises and seemed to hate us. It scared my daughter to death. So we had to regretfully return it. The staff at Petco was so understanding about the return. They really seemed to care about finding the right fit for pets/owners. I hated to return a live animal, but they made me feel comfortable about doing so. For that, I am very thankful! read more

Now all the great employees are leaving (Ms.Leysa- the best dog trainer ever, Yukie- another awesome trainer, and Josh-an awesome groomer) Theresa and brittney are still there, but it's only a matter of time before Carolyn micro-manages them right out the door!!! And, Petco got rid of their old training program and will only teach you to reward your dog with treats. Can someone say doggie diabetes? Don't waste your time or $119.00!!!! This place is conveniently located for me so I often find myself stopping in for something quick, and for that reason I really *want* to like it. It's fine for a random product that you need right away, and the prices and customer service are ok (not great, just ok). The aquatic department, however, is sorely lacking. I purchased some freshwater fish a year ago here and all but 2 died (the tank was fully cycled and ready for fish). Got other fish elsewhere and have had no problems. I am starting another tank of African Dwarf frogs now, and whenever I stop in here at least half of the frogs are dead at the bottom of the tank. If you are buying fish do NOT go here- there are so many better options that aren't that much further away. read more

I don't recommend the grooming here. I had a standard poodle (deceased now) and a Great Pyrenees, which I still have. I came here for years due to the convenient location for me--the first groomer I had was wonderful, but she left after about a year. After that, I saw a series of different groomers each time and they didn't always do a very good job. Once my poodle came home with nicks and cuts. I now have a new puppy poodle and the last two grooming appointments were done by Desiree. She was quick to give me a discounted price for both of my dogs plus a coupon, which discounted my total a further $10. I was so happy to have found her and the hair cut was decent. When I expressed how I was not happy that I had a different groomer each time and would love a consistent one, she explained she was new to grooming and was in the process of training so she wasn't going anywhere for a long time. I was happy. On my 2nd appointment with Desiree, I dropped off my pups 10 minutes before the appointment time and someone else checked me in. Desiree wasn't in yet. They couldn't give me the lower quoted price from Desiree and told me to discuss it with Desiree at pickup. Upon pick up, Desiree did not back up what she said. I know what she said! Instead, the entire team present (about 3 staff members) made it seem like I was trying to get something for free! At least that is how they made me feel. I quickly concluded that maybe I was getting Desiree "in trouble" and just left that day without saying anymore, and paid the higher price, of course. I thought maybe she was giving me a discount that perhaps she shouldn't be. The third time, I asked for Desiree when I called for the appt. but someone else helped me (Jessica?)--quoting me a higher price than the last time (which was full price--not the price Desiree gave). I explained the size of my dog and the pricing from last time and she agreed they could likely keep that pricing. Upon drop-off, I encountered the same issue where the price was about $20 higher than stated on the phone. Crystal was my groomer and was kind enough to lower it to just $4 over the phone quote. Upon pickup, I explained that I wasn't pleased with the discrepancies in pricing each time and what is quoted and what I am charged. The staff argued with me--Desiree said she was next to Jessica when she spoke to me and she heard her say the higher pricing. In my head, I wondered if she was right there why she did not speak with me personally as I had asked to speak with Desiree herself originally. As well, I didn't like the implication that I was not being honest. Again, three staff members were there and the implication was that I was lying. On my receipt, I noticed the stylist notes state that in future, the groom for my puppy would the higher price from now on. I am ok with pricing as set as I am not trying to change any company's policies and prices. I can choose to take the services as priced or look elsewhere. What I don't appreciate is how I was treated and made to feel when Desiree quoted me a certain price but did not follow through on that second visit. No apologies, nothing about she made a mistake--which I could accept. The third time, her specific statement about what she heard vs. what I said was insulting. I am being told basically, that I am lying, and that they did not say what they did. I have my notes from each conversation in my receipts in a dog folder I keep in my files so I know what was said. Prior to my using Desiree, I never had any issues with pricing. It is too bad, Desiree has ruined my desire to return. Even if the grooming is not perfect each time, I loved the convenience and the great attitude of the staff in the past. Not true anymore. read more

When you walk into this particular Petco, it just feels... I don't know... icky. Like you're not supposed to be there. It's alright if you just have to stop by to get Iams or a toy or whatever for your cat or dog, but they don't have a very good selection of rodents, birds etc. I'm just not impressed with the store as a whole. read more

When I rarely come into here which is usually only for reptile food that is not available at the smaller pet food stores around the area, I always dread the experience. The staff rarely is ever able to help with any questions I may have- no matter how basic they may be or how many other staffers they have to ask. They seem to have an extremely high turnover rate and don't seem to educate their staffers much on just about anything. So unless you know exactly what you need and are willing to pay prices that are HIGHER than most of the independent retailers out there (I've checked).. Then don't bother stopping in. read more

I just recently visiting this store, the store is clean and well stocked, the staff very friendly and helpful, they could however have more than one line open especially when they are busy, I know it's hard to predict but have two registers open at all times. I Have used the groomer service only once and am very pleased. My senior dog needed a really good bath and I decided to give petco a try as the other place I have been taking her to since we moved here in May hasn't been up to par these past few months. The service done by the staff at petco was excellent and I will continue bringing her here for now on, unless of course the service becomes unsatisfactory Went to the same location to pick up cat food, a few bags of Blue wilderness and whatnot, while checking out I mentioned that the Blue on line was substantially cheaper, I was to.d by the cashier if I provided the ad he could do a price match for me, as luck would have it I had the ad with me and showed him that the difference was $9 per bag I was then to.d he "could " do the price match for the $18 difference but he didn't feel like it, excuse me said I , he said well it's a pain in the butt so I. I don't like supporting petco usually; I used to only come here out of convenience because it was the closest store that carried rats. Their reptiles are ill cared for. Heaters on top of the cage that they have to pile Up wall decorations just to get near. Bad humidity (I mentioned to one "worker" that a baby ball python needed a bath soon because its shed had not fully come off. She had the nerve to tell me "no, that's normal. They always shed in patches". No, no healthy snake sheds like that) I only came for feeder rats for my super picky snake. Then one day, I show up and there were no rats. I asked an associate if they were just out of stock, or in back. Nope; "we don't carry those anymore" no warning. No notices posted anywhere. All petcos just discontinued carrying rats. Even for pets. After making a trip to all other stores within driving distance (none had any rats left), i returned a day later out of desperation to retrieve some kind of rodent for my hungry reptile. (In the wild where she comes from, they eat gerbils) so I asked someone for a gerbil. The super rude guy had the audacity to tell me "I can't sell a gerbil to you, because I think you are going to use it as a feeder" I asked if there was a company policy that prevented selling rodents as feeders. He said "no". I asked if I hadn't said I was buying it as a feeder, and they didn't have a policy to ask; how could he refuse me the sale? He said "well you aren't buying a cage or treats for it too; so it's clearly not a pet, and I can't sell it to you" I'm never returning here. I go to Sierra fish and pets in Renton now. They at least treat their pets and customers with respect. read more

Went in there this morning with my family to get our ever growing puppy a new collar and some treats. Nobody working was friendly or offered us any help or assistance, then the trainer Amy was absolutely beyond rude to us. We understand you are in a training session and everything (sorry we don't follow the training schedule to know when you take over the entire store) but my husband was berated for walking past an aisle with our puppy because there was a dog in training in the aisle. He can't see through the aisle walls to know there's a dog. We felt like we couldn't even shop through the store with our puppy. We won't be returning, we will go to Mud Bay from here on out. They have better products and actually make you feel valued as a customer and pet owner. And the trainer Amy needs a reality check as she was so rude and condescending-you are a "dog trainer" at petco; my husband is a combat veteran. Learn some respect. read more

I went on-line today to find where and what price would be good for a pet gate, as I have a cat that loves to try and bolt outside whenever I open the front door. I found a very highly recommended pet gate at a very reasonable price of 29.99. (26.99 if I bought it on-line until 11/26/08) I called and verified they had one in stock and asked them to hold it for me. I drove the 6 miles, arrived and was ready to purchase the product, when I was told the total would be 43.43. I was told by both the cashier and the store manager that they were unable to have the same price as their OWN website. (I understand not matching the competitors, but their OWN?) I have never heard of this before... I have bought things for my wife from both Sears and Target while making sure of how much it was going to cost me before I went to the store. Each time the price was the exact same. My wife has also worked retail for an office supply company, and they have had no problem making it right with what their website is reflecting. In today's age of computers and technology, why wouldn't you verify what and how much before you make the trip? Needless to say I wasn't a happy camper. I even called corporate only to be told, "um, yeah, thanks for your call." My 2 cats and I will not be back to Petco, and maybe you should think twice before you drive there as well! read more

Won't ever come here again! My cats have a habit of getting on our counters so I searched for a solid solution. Enter the "Scat Mat" it has good reviews, adjustable sensitivity, and for the size... not a bad price. The size advertised on their website is 48L x 20Wfor $49.99. When my husband gets to our local Petco, they have one, it is 60L x 12W and they are trying to sell it for $99.99. My husband informs the employee there that it's advertised at a different price and shows him from his phone. The associate states he'll sell it to us for $49.99. I have no idea how they price their items but if I were a current customer I would definitely do some research first! read more

This review is solely for the grooming salon. One of the groomer that I had used twice for my dogs is HORRIBLE. I didn't get much of a choice because she was the only groomer that is available during the time I went there. The first time she got my boxer cuts on his thigh without saying a word, she complained about my dogs crying and not willing to get into the crate when done. I told her that it was their 1st time going to the groomer before I hand her the dogs and she is well aware that they are nervous, but she shows no sympathy anyway. I complained to the manager later and the manager said she has been working there for a long time and is an experience groomer, so she thinks it might be her not aware that the dog has cut on his leg. So the second time I went there and it was the same groomer again, this time I only have her to do the nail trim, I stood there the whole time watching her and my pups and she used harsh words on my dogs!!! Both dogs were crying and she doesn't care and just keep complaining. When she handed me the dog, my pug nails weren't all trimmed!!! She wanted to finish the job so fast and so focus on complaining that she missed trimming all nails!!! Hello? there are only 8 nails on my dog and she missed 1 or 2!!! I have to point that out to get her finish the job.... It was horrible and $$$. I will never ever go back again. She should be FIRED!!!! and I am just so annoyed that the manager didn't investigate a little more or refund me the $. NEVER USE THEIR GROOMERS!!! read more

The worst grooming salon ever!! After 3 hours I went to pickup my dog she said almost done, as she was gathering her shears to go in the back the back they always do the clipping out front! This location does not know the meaning of customer service. I brought my dog here to be groomed and WILL NEVER MAKE THAT MISTAKE AGAIN. The Salon manager told us our dog would be done 4 hours after our scheduled appt time. When my husband called after 4.5 hours they told us she would not be done for another hour. My husband was upset, he let them know he was upset. He told them we would not be bringing our dog back. After 5.5 hours I went in to get her. They added and extra $10 charge to her bill. I was not happy, the clerk at the register said he would try to negotiate a discount. He came back and told me the groom was on them and that the salon manager wanted to speak to me. I was expecting an apology. Instead she asked about my husband saying we would not be bringing our dog back and when I said we would not she proceeded to ban us from the salon. She said my husband used bad language (didn't happen) and we would not be allowed back. Our dog was wet when we got her back, her ears were matted and mangled. Fur around her paws had been missed and her cut was uneven. I called corporate to complain about the cut and the customer service, they said they would open a complaint and let the store manager know and I would get a return call from him in 24-48 hours. 4 days later I called him. And he sided with the salon manager. Told us if we wanted quicker service in the salon we would need to pay extra for it. Tried telling us how a salon works with a staggered appt system. Which was only half of the problem. There was never an apology for keeping our dog for 5.5 hours without potty breaks or water breaks. There was never an apology for the rudeness of the salon manager. Needless to say, I am now waiting to hear back from the district manager and I have already found a different groomer and pet supply store. read more
