The grooming staff are unreliable and rude. They have taken appointments and cancelled without calling. You don't find out they cancelled the appointment until you get there. They have been rude during drop off and pickup. Won't be uaing them any more. read more

Took my Shetland Sheepdog in for her grooming appointment with Clarissa for April 4, 2025. Told her my dog has arthritis in her hips (10 yeas old) so she is a little slow. Please let her take her time. When grooming was finished my dog was limping so bad not putting weight on her left leg, I had to carry her to the car. When we got home she still could not put any weight on her left leg. Was able to get her into the vet. She was diagnosed with a torn ligament in the left knee. Started pain meds & 5 laser therapy treatments at a cost of $145.00. The treatments did not help. Recommend surgery. Appointment with James River Vet Surgery for a left TPLO on her knee but when an X-ray was done it turned out her left hip was completely out of the socket, she had to have a FHO surgery to remove the ball end of the bone at a cost of $4201.52 followed by physical therapy at the cost of $625.00 for 6 sessions. After the FHO surgery she had to have the TPLO on her knee on August 14th at the cost of $4166.54, followed by another 6 sessions of physical therapy costing another $625.00. Not to mention all of the hundreds of dollars spent in pain meds.. All of this because of the service given by Petco's incompetent groomer. I hope no one else ever uses Petco in Chester, Va for grooming. read more

Every time I come into this store I have horrible customer service. I usually don't leave bad reviews nor do I come on here giving reviews but seriously. First of all I'm a fish LOVER, I get they have to ask questions about what type of tank to get and all that. my mom has come in here and bought goldfish. Never once does she get questioned about the fish or if she has a place to home it. Every single time I come in here I come after work. And I understand I look young but every single time it's a big attitude and judgmental looks and condescending questions as if there isn't DEAD fish in your tanks. Second of all I come in here and try to ask this one older middle aged women questions ALL the time and the worst attitude ever so rude. Finally my final straw was probably taking my dog to the groomer recently payed almost 60 dollars. And absolutely terrible. Dog still practically looks the same didn't even smell good. The associates danced around to everybody else completely ignoring me even though I was there 10 minutes before anyone else. I visited this shop a few times while preparing my bird's habitat. Nearly every visit I have been greeted by employees in the store with offers to assist me. On my most recent visit a wonderful employee named Beth ( Matilda) greeted me in the store and also assisted me at the register. I was purchasing the final toys for my cage and my new conure . Beth could have just rung me up but she took the extra time to introduce me to the Vital Care program. She helped me navigate the app/website, showed me how to load my rewards, and located my coupons for the vital coupons which include 20% food and toys every time while enrolled in the program. I have spent so much money on all of my other pets and setting up my new cage, in this store before and this is tHe first time anyone has helped me learn more about this program. When it came time to collect my new feathered friend, Beth was so gentle with my bird Freddi. Speaking in a calm and soft voice, she really cared about making a comfortable transition for the pet. She gently wrapped the bird in a towel and offered to check and see if it needed their wings clipped. I declined but appreciated the offer in case I did want it. She gave me one of Freddi's old wooden toys so she would have something familiar in the cage. And explained that she would have to toss it because it can not be sanitized. Which means they have some sort of protocol for pet change over. Overall, I was so impressed and happy with my whole transaction. read more

This is one small pet store and the staff ain't any help so know what you want before you come here. All they have is the basic items you might need. I came in here looking for some stuff for my paroit and was disappointed they had nothing. I still get stuff for the dog if I don't want to look elsewhere. This was not the best one that I've been to but has the basic selection. Not a single employee was there assisting anyone. I actually don't remember seeing anyone on the floor period aside from the cashier, of course. They seem to have a pretty good variety of pet foods but the store is rather cramped and layout is a bit odd. Fish tank section is in the middle and cat, bird, and dog areas circle around the store left to right. Not a whole lot of toys nor apparel. Food, meds, toiletries are what you will find here mostly. They had a mobile pet shots day today so the front of the store was crowded with people in line and another employee registering pet owners by the register area. We found what we needed and the prices were okay. The cashier weren't particularly friendly like the one I used to go in my old neighborhood of Port Hueneme, CA. There, I was always greeted and they always asked if I had the Petco Card before ringing, AND offered pet treats...But none of that here. She just started ringing and we paid and done. I'm so disappointed in the grooming department. We made an appointment weeks in advance. We arrived at the appointment and the grooming associate felt the dog and told me how she could cut her hair... even said how cute her face would look. I was excited! My dog was scared to go back, but not at all aggressive (she's a sweetheart). The lady told me I needed to get her to the door, so I did (dog is 25 lbs...). At that point she said you know what.. I think she's too matted you need to take her to a vet to remove mats and make another appointment. We have been to this location several times and my dog has been more matted than today and the groomers did an excellent job. I got the impression this lady just didn't want to deal with it and it started when my dog was scared to go back. I've had such great experiences at this location but sadly will never be back either for grooming or shopping. I left so disappointed. If the policy has changed and the groomers are uncomfortable removing mats, then add a clause to online booking. I would have gladly removed mats prior to coming - I waited weeks for this appointment! read more

BEWARE! This petco has been infamous for cutting dogs. If your dog is not comfortable coming to the groomers do not take them here! My dog had a small cut recently on her inner leg and we did not notice until the night after. We assumed it was the groomers but we could not tell until the night after her appointment. We ended up taking her again and even notified them of the past incident, but three minutes later we get a call saying they cut her ear. They paid the bill for her stitches, which was nice, but they did not apologize and the person who cut her didn't even come talk to us. The manager just called us, told us to what happened, and then told us to meet us at the vet. Plus the vet in the vet hospital we went to told us that they get many dogs who come from petco with cuts. The fact that their was no apology really annoyed me but that's what we get for trusting a commercial groomer. I would recommend you understand the temperament of your dog before you try to go here because they may cut them. Plus why risk it! There are plenty of other groomers in the area for around the same price who a professionally trained in handling situations like this. Just be careful of this place and understand the risks you may be taking when you go here. read more

The store itself it fine. This rating is just for the grooming. I had an appointment to take my dog there, but found another groomer (with the same pricing) who could take him. And thank goodness I did! A couple of times I have been to that petco and looked into the grooming area. I've never been particularly impressed, but never upset by anything I saw. However, one time I did see a groomer shout at and manhandle (including ROUGH handling and smacking) a small dog who was obviously frightened. I'm sorry, but if the dog is snapping you need to muzzle it, and not smack it. FFS. read more

The last time I was in there, I was looking for a beta. Most of them were dead or during. The young employee was on the phone and did not even acknowledge me. As I was going out of the door, the manager finally asked if he could help me. I said I was leaving and told him why. I've taken my dog to the groomer several times and the service has been ok. Not great. The last time I took our dog we forgot her rabies paperwork. I understand why that's important. Our dog had a current tag with an id number. You would think that would be acceptable. I asked if I could run home and scan the paperwork. That wasn't acceptable. I asked if I could bring the paperwork when I came to pick her up. That wasn't acceptable either. No effort to work with me on the matter. I was a regular customer of their grooming services up to this point. I can take my dog somewhere else to do the same job for less money anyway. read more

I like the store, it has what you want most of the time. I wouldn't rely on what the staff has to say, they are not that knowledgeable on products. I had asked for a 10 pound bag of a certain dog food, she told me that don't make it in that size... really? I buy it all the time! So I went to the Petsmart down the road & picked it up. Never again will I groom my dogs there! OMG! Brought 2 long hair dogs for a little grooming. How in the world did they both get groomed in 1 hour by the same person? I take my little one to this store to have his nails clipped often,the groomers and cashiers are great. Today me and my son visited the new store. We were sad to see a lot of dead fish.My son told a young man that worked there that they should remove them, His replied by saying "Wow you're bright..DUH" another gentleman who works there ask what the trouble was. I told him about the fish, I also told him about the bad comments i read about Chester Petco for the same problem, his reply was "no one cares about reviews" When i said that i do,he started talking about shoplifting then he followed us all over store and even out the door.He was really rude to us,so i will never go back to that store again. read more

I have had two prior bad experiences getting my Yorkie Poo groomed at Petco, so we usually go to the Petite Pet Spa and Inn, in Richmond. I haven't had her groomed in two months because she has cherry eyes, but yesterday when I scheduled her surgery, the vet said she was fine to get groomed. I couldn't get in with our regular groomer so I decided to give Petco one last chance. I was so pleasantly surprised. They really followed my instructions this time exactly, and my dog looks gorgeous and she was very happy when I picked her up. My groomers name was Sharon and I will for sure always use her! She is clearly knowledgable about the hair type on my particular dog, which is semi fine, but also curly, and she knew how to make her look great! read more

Was asked not to return after my 2 year old goldendoodle, who has gone their since he was brought home, who was trained there, was "incessantly barking". We have now talked to Ziggy and made sure he understands that barking is not acceptable. Was told that he would do better at a salon that was not as busy. So being busy is apparently a bad thing for this company. Also there is a pretty big difference between "you should take him somewhere less busy because it would be better for him" and "he is no longer welcome here". This also after while in their care he was able to not only get a hold of a pumice stone but chew it to the point where they were concerned for his health. Not very comforting that there was a lot of attention being paid. Additionally, after having him for 5 hours, he was 3/4 of the way groomed and the store refused to finish grooming him. Hundreds of dollars spent in this store for my 2 dogs and cat and this is the way we were treated after years or patronage. Kind of the equivalent to a daycare blaming a toddler for crying and eating a crayon. Sucks to be so busy that they can't take care of their customers. At least they will have one less now - maybe that I'll help them pay attention to the ones that continue to come there. Pretty disappointing. read more

If you're looking for service then you had better make the trip to PetSmart. This store is staffed by associates who completely ignor customers. I toured the aquatic dept. while an associate (not wearing a name tag) assisted another customer with fish. The fact that he never acknowledged me was bad enough. but when he was fished with her he disappeared to the front register leaving me to wait 30+ minutes to be serviced. The whole time I was waiting I took time to see a group of 4 employees chating over the Ferret cage in the center isle of the store. Also another associate was busy putting up sale stickers on merchandise and passed by me 3-4 times never to speak a word. Finally after the 30+ minute wait I made eye contact or a look of despritation with an associate named Eddie. I purchased the tropical fish that I wanted and a plant that was in an aquarium with a sign clearly displaying the price of $4.99 This was the EXACT same plant as the picture indicated on the tank for $4.99, however I was told that that plant was $9.99 and not the $4.99 as displayed. Rather than fight the matter I purchased the smaller plant. THIS IS WRONG FOR A STORE TO HAVE AN ITEM PRICED WITH A PRICE ONLY TO BE TOLD IT'S REALLY TWICE AS MUCH. FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!! I wanted to bring all this to Joe, the store manager's attention but he was far too busy rushing from the office with change in his hand to place in a cash register and the out the front door to smoke. I could tell right then that these complaints would have fallen on deaf ears. PETCO as a company needs to really get on this store's customer service. Do yourself a favor travel the distance to PETSMART where they treat you like a PAYING customer should be treated. read more

store is fine. selection is normal and over all the store is "ok". i have run in there several times for basic pet needs. we have been in there several times where the cat cages were so filthy and you can smell them halfway across the store, so thats pretty bad. CUSTOMER SERVICE is AWFUL. there is a girl that works there with blonde hair and has a lisp that tried to tell me that toy size dogs are 45-50lbs?! (um no). they she told my 9 year old daughter she cant show her dog bc its not a recognized breed. which is also not true. i explained to her that AKC does recognize some FSS dogs for the show ring. she continued to try to tell me i was wrong then went right infront of me and started talking about us to another emplyoee. i have had two other pretty poor customer service experinces at this store. we won't be back. oh yea and when i asked about puppy trianing classes she told me the woman i was asking about no longer worked there and then she bad mouthed her to me....after yesterdays experince i honestly considered wrtting a letter to corporate. number one hire people who atleast have some basic knowledge of what they are talking about or a willingness to learn! and hire employees that are respectful and able to their job would be great. the entire time i was there i was talking to like i was a piece of dirt and a bother to have even stepped in the store. read more
