I started using the Pet Apothecary to get my Sasha Beagle's antibiotics for a bladder infection as the multiple human pharmacies I tried were very confused by the prescription. The good people here filled the prescription quickly and I was able to pick up immediately. This pet pharmacy compounds their own medications and can make them in a variety of forms (liquid, pill) and add flavors to make administering much easier for pet owners. Sasha was recently diagnosed with TCC (transitional cell carcinoma) and must have a special prescription that had filled here. I am confident with the staff's knowledge and resources, that they will continue to provide excellent service for as long as I need to obtain my peanut's special medicine. When a vet calls/faxes in a prescription, a staff member will call first to verify and inform you of the price. I am unaware of what market prices are for the medications I have gotten filled, but I do know that Clavomax was MUCH cheaper here than through the vet office (like 1/3 or less the cost). The only issue I have encountered is the hours - they are only open 10a-5:30pm Monday through Thursday, and Friday until 4pm. With my work schedule, it can be difficult getting there before they close to pick up my pup's Rx. Of course, my baby comes 1st so I will do what it takes to get there! read more

If you see a posting for a job at this place. DON'T APPLY! They pay decent but they mess up your checks, health insurance through them once employed is over the top expensive. Once you're in and doing the job it's not that bad. The only thing bad about the job itself is the clients being incredibly rude and you literally get screamed at either on the phone or in person. Now, let's get to the staff. Some are nice, some are two faced. One of the customer service reps walks around like she's a manager when she in no way shape or form has the title. But, speaking of managers. Lets talk about the head pharmacist who doesn't like to deal with client complaints, and talks down to you because you did all you could before trying to get her involved, and when you got her involved in said client/customer complaint she doesn't want to deal with it. Oh, and don't expect her to be at her desk located in the compounding area, she likes to hide away in her office and barely help the other pharmacists. Her attitude is very rude and passive as well. It seems like most of the staff come and go as they please, show up whenever they want and blame it on their children. But when YOU bring up personal life issues happening outside of work that you either have called in for or need to leave early for its okay at the time, but when in reality it's not. The company is backwards and quickly going down hill now that optio took over. Anyone who reads this review can clearly tell I'm a former employee who was done wrong and dirty. My advice, don't get your compound medication for your pet at this pharmacy. Go through Chewy or another source. They are over priced and honestly don't care about your pets health. ‍ read more

I have used Pet Apothecary for years. One of my dogs is currently terminal with an aggressive cancer. Every time a medication has been needed or even needed to be changed, they have had it available same day for pick up. I have been using Pet Apothecary for over two years and have not had any problems at all with them. When I call to tell them to refill my dog's prescription they always confirm that I want it shipped directly to my home and confirm the address is the same. Each time they have asked if I would like it charged to my credit card on file. Today when I called they did warn me that mail is taking longer than usual so they just wanted to make sure my dog had enough medicine to get them through for a couple of weeks. read more

I am from the Chicago suburbs and was referred to Jeff and the Pet Apothecary by my vet (Dr. Comito) who had nothing but the highest praise for them! My dog is on lifelong anti-epileptic medications and we have been receiving them in the mail from Pet Apothecary for almost 3 years now!! It has always been such a smooth and easy process and they are so diligent about following up when necessary. They even compounded one of my prescriptions into a single capsule which eliminated the days of me having to split up tiny little tablets, making my life a million times easier!! I have gotten meds here for a few of my pets over the years, they do a good job. They are super fast with getting the scrips filled and mailed out to me, which I really appreciate. It is certainly not inexpensive but then again, it is a niche business and it is probably cheaper then buying from the vets office I'm guessing. It's a good resource to have for sure. read more

They have horrible hours, like most people, I normally work until 5 everyday. No chance I can ever make it there on time. They close at 5:30, 4 on Fridays and not open at all over the weekend. I have to literally take off work to pick up my prescriptions. They offer to send but the shipping literally costs more then the medication! Sometimes I have to repeatedly call just to speak with someone. When I finally do get my furbaby's meds, they give me a dark orange syringe making it very difficult to see how much medication I have extracted from vile. Just not happy with their services or lack there of. Also, they keep your credit card on file! In this day and age that is very dangerous if you want to avoid having your account information stolen. read more

I been trying to get an invoice from them for over a week now. When they delivered my pet's medication they did not include the invoice and her insurance will not accept a receipt. I called them several times and was told the invoice would be emailed to me but I have yet to receive anything. I called this business to confirm they had a life-saving medication my dog needed immediately. Once I confirmed they did, my out of state veterinary and called them to place the order. I never heard back from them. I called the next day and asked about the order and they were clueless. I placed the order all over again and once again never heard from them. I called a third time and as usual the person on the phone had no idea what I was talking about. Finally, the pharmacist responded and I was told that my medication could not be refilled due to them not having a license for that state. I called in a refill for my cat with kidney disease. They were closed, so I used their automated refill option. A week had gone by, and I still didn't have her meds. I left a message on Friday checking on the status. I received a voicemail on Sunday stating it wasn't refilled because they were waiting for credit card info. In the past, I have not had to give them my credit card number, they had it on file. They also stated in the message that I would have to wait until 10:00 am on Monday to call it in again. I am not happy that they didn't bother to call & inform me that they were in need of my credit card info. She is now out of her meds. I'm not able to get there before they close--it will have to be shipped. Hoping I can find another place that can compound her meds for me. I don't want my cat's health jeopardized because they won't make a phone call. read more

My dog had been prescribed a medication from my vet, and my vet didn't have it right away so they sent the prescription to this place. First problem - no hours listed anywhere - not on their website, not on their phone when you call - nowhere. Secondly, I was told by my vet that my dog would get this certain medication once a day for ten days. The first time the pet apothecary called me and left a voicemail - they told me it would be twice a day for ten days. The second time I actually spoke to someone who had NO idea how to answer any of my questions and had to continuously put me on hold for every. single. question. I was then told during that conversation that it is going to be ONCE a day for ten days. Then I called to ask some questions and see if I needed to stop my dogs other medications while she were to be on this new one and was told it was TWICE a day for ten days. Like what the hell. Which one is it?! How am I supposed to trust what you're doing when NOTHING has been consistent and no one could answer my questions. Then, Jeff asked for my credit card to "keep on file" to be able to fill a prescription. First of all, really? To fill a damn prescription that I NEED for my dog - why would I have you fill it and not pick it up?! When I arrived to pick up the medication, they had ALREADY processed the card for an amount I did not know (until I got there and they gave me the receipt) WITHOUT my permission. Keeping a card on file vs. charging the card are TWO different things. Fucking unacceptable. Jeff also asked me to let my vet know how their service was. You bet I did. Horrible. We have used Pet Apothecary for several years for one of our cats. They have always been very responsive and the compounded medicine has been delivered the next day. recently another one of cats developed heart problems and our vet called in a prescriptions. Before I could drive home the owner had called my wife and said they would compound the meds right away and get it in the mail immediately and we had in the next day. The people at Pet Apothecary make treating a sick pet easier by providing medications with different flavor options and types (pils or suspension), as well as answering any questions you might have. I've been buying my dog's anti-seziure medication here. They used to have two previous locations in Bayside. This new location is on Silver Spring Drive right next to Daniel Kondos Law Offices. The staff is excellent and prompt. The price is a bit steep (or maybe just my dog's meds are), but there's not much competition in this field. I can hardly trust Walgreen's and CVS to my prescriptions, why would I trust them for my dog's? The main pharmacist is happy to explain any of the meds to you. The office also has a in office dog, but I haven't seen him at the new location yet. He's very mild mannered and kinda roams around the office. read more

I rarely write reviews, but felt the Pet Apothecary's above and beyond customer service must be recognized. I live in Chicago and was referred to the Pet Apothecary from a friend living in Milwaukee. My dog needed a medication that wasn't available in the pet pharmacy world. Not only that, but my pet is picky about taking medications. I called the Pet Apothecary to see if they could assist and they were incredible. I spoke with the owner/pharmacist who was very nice and provided a depth of knowledge. They created the medication for my dog and were able to ship it to my house. It was convenient, easy and my dog took the meds with no problem and became healthy in no time. Very disappointing. I'm not sure why it's so difficult to do anything with them. We've had one medication filled. They called us 4 times AFTER we confirmed TWICE that Yes, we wanted it filled and we had paid. Left early from work and arrived there to find they hadn't started it. They said "We don't usually start it til it's paid" (it already had been paid for...) Sat and waited 20 minutes and it was finally done. Called them Friday and left a message. They never called me back. Called again yesterday, no call back. Called a THIRD time today, and they said "oh looks like we have a few VM's... Let me check on that.." Seriously? Then she came back and said we opted to have it shipped which is NOT true because they never even bothered to call me back so how could I possibly have opted to have it shipped if they can't answer the phone or call me back? So 4 days later, no meds. I'm not sure why it's so difficult to do business with them. I'd much rather fill through a vet. read more

My cat is 19 and trying to get any medication in to him is incredibly traumatic and stressful. Wrapping a pill in any treat doesn't work! He has a med he needs to take twice daily. I am disappointed with service here as I have gotten prescripts for several pets here for years. They seem to have to be reminded of "automatic shipments" or don't send out the meds in time when the previous one is through. Several times I have had to call to ask them to ship out meds because my pet was done with the previous one and more than once they sent out the wrong flavor I had requested. I will re-rate them once I see service improve. One more chance and then I go to another place for my pets meds. read more

My cat had an eye infection and my vet called in a prescription. I was promptly contacted by P.A., gave them shipping and payment info, and ended the call. Thus began my wait. After 5 days I gave up. I made repeated attempts to contact them during business hours and kept getting a voice mail. Thankfully the antibiotics my vet gave me worked wonders and my cat was all better. This was roughly a month ago. Today, a past due invoice shows up in my mail box for 38.42. A bill for medication I never received made doubly stupid because they already had my credit card number. It's really nice to be able to have a service like this. My little furball was so sick that I was about to have him put down because he quit eating and wouldn't take his meds. I decided to give this place a try as a last ditch effort and it actually worked! The ear cream is a life-saver and the chicken juice solution is the only way I can get him to take his meds. I don't know how much longer I have with him but for now he's stable and I'm very thankful. Everyone I deal with here is very nice and you can tell they really care about animals.
