Butter Chicken (medium) and Malai Kofta (mild)

Sadly underwhelming but we'll definitely come back for another try! The food was fine, but nothing earth-shattering. The butter chicken had maybe 5 small chunks of chicken and the kofta only had 3 small pieces. The rest of the bowl was just sauce. Maybe thats how it's supposed to be, but did seem disappointing. The way it comes feels like it'd be a great meal for sharing. The naan was good, really thin and very garlicky! We ordered the Zeera rice but didn't get it, we got a big bowl of white rice instead. There was only one guy waiting tables so service was slow and not great. The interior of the restaurant was mediocre. Straws were in a styrofoam cup on the table, thin paper napkins in a dispenser as well. There were a bunch of Indian people eating here so assuming it is legit

A close friend from Chennai recommended that we eat at Persis. It's a cool, little family-run Indian restaurant just off I-96 in Okemos. (For some inexplicable reason there are several excellent restaurants clustered together at a strip mall in this vicinity. Normally you'd expect chain-bland grub right off the interestate, but not in Okemos.) We had: * mango lassi (yumm) * Taj Mahal lager (interesting, light and pleasant) * garlic naan (wonderful!) * palak paneer (looked gross but tasted quite good) * chicken tikka masala (great) Only minor criticism is we asked for spicy, and -- while it had a little heat -- it wasn't enough for us. To be fair, that's more of a Midwestern issue. It's hard to find a place that will prepare food really spicy here. Anyway, fantastic meal. We'll be back.

    Mixed Chicken Mixed Kabob Grill

Not much of a welcome. Appetizers were great but dinner...NO. The chicken (mixed chicken kabobs) was so dry that I asked for some of the tikka masala sauce just so I could swallow the dried out chicken and was told that they don't have any even though my friend ordered a tikka masala dish that had a lot of the sauce. There was no apology and certainly no offer to not charge me for the kabob dinner or even a discount. Not sure if I will go back.

Garlic Naan, Chicken Tikka Masala, Gobhi Manchurian

Love this place! Can't bring myself to order anything new from the menu because I love my usual so much. We usually get take out and are able to eat the portions for a few meals but I do caution if you are eating in to not expect a quick lunch. Highly recommend!

    Mysore masala dosa

My colleague is South Indian and a big fan of dosas, so this is the South Indian place he scoped out and took me and my other colleague for dinner. I got the mysore masala dosa, which is usually one of my favorite kinds of dosas, and it was definitely a healthy portion. It's good, but definitely not the best dosa I had, and my colleague who took us here told me this is the most subpar experience he's ever had here in the many times he's gone here. Nevertheless, I did think it was good, even though it lacked some of the crunch that I really do crave in dosas. We also got the gobi manchurian which was solid, but nothing to write home about, and I got a chai which I enjoyed. I definitely went home feeling very very full.

If you like your chicken dry and ready to choke on....this is your place. Unbelievable how much you pay here for terrible food.

Great butter chicken and garlic naan. Unexpectedly awesome chicken fried rice. I just wish they opened sooner for dinner.

The service was average for a sit down restaurant. The food was average for Indian cuisine, and the water was good. Quality water is important in urban restaurants these days- especially in Michigan where we have had nationally known disasters like the Flint water crisis. If you can't stomach the water- then don't stay for the food! Because after all, they wash their dishes in the water, they wash your vegetables in the water, and it ultimately ends up in you.

The fellow who waited on us had such a thick accent we could barely understand him, the lady bussing dishes didn't speak any English. But with pointing at the menu and careful listening we got our orders in. The food arrived pretty quickly, and it was amazing with plenty for leftovers. I found a bit of star anise in mine which just proves the sauces are home-made and not dumped out of a jar (like some places do). The rice was sprinkled with black sesame seeds just for that added extra, and the naan was hot and soft. The atmosphere was...odd. No music at all, which made it feel awkward. Boxes and storage and piles of supplies crowded the dining room and plenty of Christmas decorations were still up (we visited in March mind you). The restroom was clean and decorated for spring with an exorbitant quantity of silk flower arrangements on the counter. They were out of chai Masala, so I'd ordered something called "rose milk" which I never did receive but at least I wasn't charged for it. Again, the language gap proved to be a real thing to contend with. By the time we left around 8:20 the place was empty, but then it was a Thursday night. The food was worth putting up with the rest of it, and looking forward to dining there again.

Cleanliness, freshness, variety…read more Every once in a while place will surprise you. I walked into this place while traveling as a soccer parent. The freshness of the produce was the first thing I recognized in the buffet. Normally the texture feels off in a buffet but this reminded me of the freshness of my auntie's garden in India. The chickpeas were not over or undercooked (steam cooked?) and the raita was the rich consistency of home, not the quick and watered down version typical in casual fare. I am vegetarian and cannot speak to the meat dishes, but felt like some real heart was behind the cooking. Perhaps the Naan was the only drawback, losing its texture made in bulk perhaps. But the taste relied less on salt and oil and more on the ingredients and a sense of freshness on many items I might serve in my own home. I cook these dishes at home and on a few I felt like asking for some cooking tips.
