I stopped in here after work. It was empty. Literally the only customer. I could choose my seat and was greeted immediately. It was very quiet. I ordered my food and it came quickly. It was very tasty. The appetizer was two samosas. I could only eat one. It was fried and I expected it to be baked (I dont know why). It was flavorful. It seems like restaurant owners want us to be honest. I walked into this restaurant a long time ago in the place was so filthy that I could not even enjoy my meal. The food was spicy and I'm OK with that. But the place was utterly disgusting when you come into the restaurant business and you don't know how to teach your employees how to cook right or how to clean in the dining room area. Then I hope you close. After that day, I never stepped back into your restaurant ever again. And that was five years ago. We had the most fabulous experience. I am vegan and inquired about whether a few items on the menu had dairy. They asked a few questions and made some recommendations offering to make them without butter/ghee. Then the chef came out and clarified to be sure and suggested a bread for me instead of the naan. I felt very accommodated and care about. The food itself was outstanding. The service was great and everyone went home bursting at the seams (in the best way possible). Sadly underwhelming but we'll definitely come back for another try! The food was fine, but nothing earth-shattering. The butter chicken had maybe 5 small chunks of chicken and the kofta only had 3 small pieces. The rest of the bowl was just sauce. Maybe thats how it's supposed to be, but did seem disappointing. The way it comes feels like it'd be a great meal for sharing. The naan was good, really thin and very garlicky! We ordered the Zeera rice but didn't get it, we got a big bowl of white rice instead. There was only one guy waiting tables so service was slow and not great. The interior of the restaurant was mediocre. Persis Indian Grill is "genuine" Indian restaurant catering to ethnic Indians and as such, the overall quality of the food remains high. But the execution of the dining experience is where Persis is severely lacking. First, there was a rowdy party taking place with seemingly drunk attendees who were making ear shattering noises. Second, the cuisine is not well coordinated and the supply of popular dishes come up as unavailable or critical food ingredients are missing. Third, the facilities itself are tired and badly in need of a facelift. Finally, the high prices of this restaurant do not correspond to the generally mediocre service and products available. Overall, recommend that patrons think twice of attending this restaurant; we believe that other dining options offer more value than Persis. read more

A close friend from Chennai recommended that we eat at Persis. It's a cool, little family-run Indian restaurant just off I-96 in Okemos. (For some inexplicable reason there are several excellent restaurants clustered together at a strip mall in this vicinity. Normally you'd expect chain-bland grub right off the interestate, but not in Okemos.) We had: * mango lassi (yumm) * Taj Mahal lager (interesting, light and pleasant) * garlic naan (wonderful!) * palak paneer (looked gross but tasted quite good) * chicken tikka masala (great) Only minor criticism is we asked for spicy, and -- while it had a little heat -- it wasn't enough for us. I have been to numerous Indian food restaurants over the years. I stopped here based on a recommendation from a friend who is from India, who had been here numerous times. My wife had also recommended it after she tried it for the first time a few weeks earlier. They both highly recommended it. I went here for lunch with another person. Upon entering the restaurant it took a minute for someone to actually come out of the kitchen to seat us. Another couple came in later and left after waiting a couple minutes for someone to seat them and no one came out of the kitchen. There was one other couple in the restaurant at the time we were there. I ordered the chicken tikka and the other person I was with ordered the butter chicken. I tried both dishes and thought they were good, but not the best I ever had. Both were very similar in flavor, but I thought the butter chicken was slightly better. I would go back and try it again, but my initial experience at another Indian restaurant in the area was better on first impression. read more

This is the best Indian food I have ever had, and possibly the best food I've had ever. I'm not kidding. My wife and I ordered Persis delivered while on vacation in Lansing. The food was full of rich, interesting flavors. They're not afraid to go hot, but it's a nuanced hot, not just heat. I can't recommend Persis highly enough. My colleague is South Indian and a big fan of dosas, so this is the South Indian place he scoped out and took me and my other colleague for dinner. I got the mysore masala dosa, which is usually one of my favorite kinds of dosas, and it was definitely a healthy portion. It's good, but definitely not the best dosa I had, and my colleague who took us here told me this is the most subpar experience he's ever had here in the many times he's gone here. Nevertheless, I did think it was good, even though it lacked some of the crunch that I really do crave in dosas. Persis was an indian spot nearby that came up with high rating and good reviews when I was looking for places to eat. I am not going to lie, I thought the pictures on yelp looked mouthwatering. Stepping in was underwhelming because of the overly vibrant wall colors and terrible decor but their variety of booze I didnt sip on unfortunately, did not disappoint. It located 0.2 miles away from Best Western where we were staying. We ordered a ton of food to sample and critique and none of them let us down. However the chicken curry dish wouldve been better boneless and the biriyani was extremely spicy. Definitely a no for me. The prices are like any other indian restaurant. Expect to pay $50 for a family of 4 adults which is reasonable. The staff was incredibly nice constantly letting us know how much longer our carry out would take and to take a seat to wait. They also broke down many of the dishes for us when asked questions. The places was getting nonstop carry out orders along with the people dining in. They were busy bees for sure. Due to memorial weekend they were closing at 9pm instead of 9:30pm. Our food was served piping hot, fresh, delicious and worth every penny. We inhaled it at the hotel and ended up in food coma. Ordered food through Yelp app. When picking up food the owner did not know where it was and said we didn't order from him. When I showed him the online receipt, he again said it wasn't him. Then (after a few minutes of back and forth) he realized we had ordered online and said "next time call us to order...I lose 30% on orders like this". We had tipped him 20%...and I wanted to take it back right there, but didn't wanted to compensate the cooks as it wasn't their fault the owner is rude. We went to Persis on a weeknight for a team dinner - our group has a mix of ethnicity, dietary preferences, and spice tolerance, and Persis did not disappoint in certain aspects. For a group of 6 - we order the bread basket, goat pepper fry, fish moilee, fire dosa, mysore masala dosa, chicken tikka masala, chili paneer, samosas, chilly gobi, and a variety of alcoholic libations. What we liked: The fish moilee - A Kerala specialty fish curry with mustard and coconut milk. The fish was wonderfully flaky, and the curry was flavorful and a crowd pleaser. Fire dosa - Definitely not something you should order as an individual dish, as it is cartoon-steam-coming-out-of-your-ears spicy. However, we really enjoyed sharing it as a group and watching each other's reactions to it! The coconut chutney helps cut the spice, but the sambar was like watery dal and very forgettable. Chilly gobi - Cauliflower florets in a spicy sauce with onions and peppers. The cauliflower was fried to a perfect crisp, and the portion is perfect for sharing. What we didn't like: The restaurant interiors - Kind of dingy, not really reflective of the cuisine served (the foyer had a lot of Chinese decor?), and the floors were so slippery in certain places that it was definitely a safety hazard. The service - We were told that the restaurant were out of Kingfisher beer when we could see it behind the bar, we had to repeatedly signal the server over to take our orders and to refill our water, and the server did not give us any recommendations from the menu nor appeared to be very engaged. The chicken and paneer dishes - Very run of the mill, expensive for this location, and not prepared properly. Overall, this place does well when you order South Indian food (like the aforementioned fish curry and dosas), but falls short on service and all other aspects of a dining experience. read more

There are several good Indian restaurants in the Lansing area but this is the best! The garlic nan, butter chicken, tandoori chicken and chicken biryani are all special favorites with us. They will make it as spicy as you like but if you want it crazy spicy, you do have to make it clear. Service can be a little uneven. For us, somehow, that is part of the charm. read more

We came in on a Sunday evening, a group of five~ we ordered several dishes to share, naan, rice, and a beer, soda and water for the table. I asked what a good appetizer was; I was directed to the first chicken app on the list which was fatty dark meat with almost no flavor. It came with sliced onions and peppers.. but it was very bland and disappointing. We sat for over 40 minutes with no update on our food. I don't mean 15 minutes that felt like 40- it was forever. Must have at least watched twelve to fifteen To-Go orders fly out the door.. One of our party actually had to get up to ask about our dinner and if we could get more water (totally empty glasses at our table). Our food came which we ordered medium spice when we were asked- it came out with no heat at all. Paneer tikka masala was okay, but again; bland. The lamb vindaloo was most popular at the table. Everyone commented on what a small portion of chicken was actually in the butter chicken. Garlic naan was very good! I was never asked if I wanted a soda refill, and again, we had to flag down a server for more rice, the check, and boxes. The service was some of the worst I've ever had in my adult life! No apology. I have been wanting Indian food for awhile and hadn't found a good place for it that was close enough to do a carryout order for. I did some searching and decided to give Persis a chance - NO REGRETS! The food was fantastic and reasonably priced. Baby mild seasoning for the tikka masala was perfect for my kids and the medium spice vindaoo was just right for us adults. The samosas were a hit with all of us! My only complaints are that the online ordering is a little clunky, and since they don't open until 5:30, the earliest I could get a to go order was 6, and we live 30 minutes away. We usually eat dinner closer to 5:30/6pm, but it was not a huge deal and definitely worth the wait! We will order from here again! read more

I really liked the mirrored bar area. It is quite clean, which was very nice. Service: 3.5 stars. Kitchen noise is a little loud. They were very slow to clear the plates. Didn't refill our iced tea. Some of the dishes on the line were almost empty, and not refilled. (I'm not sure if this was because of the time or if it was just normal for the establishment.) Therefore, only 3.5 stars. Food: 4 stars. variety was nice. They had a few things that I've never tried before broccoli porayi, a rice dish, an eggplant dish, as well as some chicken biranyi and mongolian shrimp curry. Naan was excellent and is on the buffet. Spice level was good; not too hot, but definitely flavored with spices. I would've liked chai tea or mango lassi as part of the buffet. Also, I didn't care for the desert on this day. If you're in the area, I recommend checking out this restaurant. It seemed pretty good. read more

Thanks to this place I now keep a cupboard full of Imodium A-D. But more about that later. I ordered takeout 45 minutes before I got there, but they still made me wait 15 minutes. When I got there the place was packed with about 50 Indians. I guess that's a good sign; it means the place is authentic. Maybe a little TOO authentic. Lets just say the results were ... umm ... I was in the area last August and was pondering this place, but the reviews about the poor service scared me off. This time, I was with a group, totaling five including me. It took a long time to get our order taken, but things were getting busy. Then it took half an hour for our food to come, during which time no one came by to refill our water glasses or take second drink orders. Once our food arrived, that was the last we saw of any service staff for a literal, solid hour (could have been longer, because I left before our host paid the check). I have never, ever, in decades' worth of dining out, experienced such completely inept and uncaring table service. It wasn't personal, either. Lots of folks of various ethnic persuasions experienced similar lack of attention, from my observation point at the center of the restaurant. You'd think that the waiters' paths would have taken them past our table at least once in sixty minutes, but they did not so much as glance in our direction before returning to the kitchen or ducking behind the bar. The food was, as noted in other reviews, absolutely delicious. But there is nothing in the world that I can think of that will get me back to Persis -- ever. read more

I really enjoy spicy Indian cuisine...I requested my vindaloo a couple of notches above what they typically serve as spicy...I was sweating and calling for yogurt about four bites in...exactly what I had hoped for...our server stated that there was another level above my spice-level...to all spice-heads out there, this place will bring the ruckus if you so desire. Went here for a Mother's day lunch buffet. It was A-OK. I thought the food was fairly good, but I just wasn't blown away by it. There was something missing... and I can't really put my finger on it. Maybe some of the dishes weren't spicy enough? Maybe the flavors weren't complex enough? Maybe the flavors were too refined and not like homemade Indian dishes? I just don't know. And, I must say, I know my Indian food! I lived with a South Indian family for a year and learned how to cook some Indian dishes, like chana masala (sour chickpea curry). I also lived in the DC/Baltimore area for a bit, which actually had some really good Indian restaurants. I think I spent half my college years eating Indian food. Maybe it's because Persis is a chain, albeit a small one. There's something about chain restaurants versus a real mom-and-pop kind of place. The naan was flat and crispy, not puffy and soft, which is how I like it, and I don't think it was flat only because it was the lunch buffet. Naan is super important to me when I eat Indian food because that's what I use to soak up all the delicious sauces. You can't really soak anything with a crispy piece of flat bread! I wasn't sure if the masala chai tea was authentic... it didn't seem to have enough body, although I did find a few tea leaves at the bottom, so maybe it was brewed from real tea leaves and not just made from a powder or something strange like that. The dessert they offered was a little bit unusual... I've had noodles in a sweet milk/cardamom sauce before, but this dessert just didn't have any sauce, which meant that you were eating fragrant but dry noodles with pieces of fruit and some sliced almonds. I was hoping for gulab jamun, especially on Mother's day, but sadly no. Service was kind of weird... when we asked if we could have one of the round tables in the middle of the restaurant, one of the hostesses said, "Oh, do you have a reservation?" We said, "No." But instead of saying that we couldn't have the table in a nicer tone, she said something like, "Oh, well then you can't have that table." A more courteous way to say that would have been, "Oh, I'm sorry, those are reserved already, but would X table be all right with you?" I'm usually not super picky about service, but I do like to be treated respectfully and not as if I'm putting them out by eating at their restaurant! All in all, it was A-OK. I wouldn't protest too much if a friend wanted to go there, but it also wouldn't be the first Indian restaurant on my list. I'm willing to give it another try though because I love Indian food, but I won't go with high expectations. read more

I was craving for curry while I was watching "A Mind of a Chef" (kudos if you know what episode I'm talking about lol). My boyfriend mentioned of this restaurant, and was like "hell yeaaaaa!!!" But sadly, it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. Looks dark from the outside; super bright on the inside. Good size restaurant with booths and round tables in the middle; bar to the right. On a Tuesday night, it wasn't crowded, but my boyfriend said it can get packed. Hostess was nice; menu was detailed. Keep in mind, you can tell them how spicy you want it, although some are made to be a certain spice level. So far, not bad... Until the 15 min wait for our food. Luckily I always have great conversations with my boyfriend, but what if this was a first date??? Awkwarddddd. Honestly I could've walked to Tim Hortons, ordered a drink, came back, and the food would still not be there. Sigh...what a disappointment. We ordered garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, and bhindi do piyaz (okra). We ordered mild spice because my boyfriend said medium was hella spicy. But I was underwhelmed by the lack of spice in our dishes. Maybe next time I will try the medium. However, the next time I come back, it will be for take out. I'm not going to wait forever for my food again. I've been to other Indian restaurants with delicious food and fast food services, so I know it's possible.
