I stopped by Perry's Cafe while I was meandering along the Santa Monica / Venice Beach area one morning. There are several of these along the shore, and they looked clean, were not busy (it was only 10am on a Friday though) and had great outdoor seating with ocean views - everything that I was looking for at the time! Their menu was pretty impressive for such a small place, and they serve breakfast until 11am. Perry's also serves as a bike and surfboard rental shop, but I only ate while I was visiting. I ordered the Farmer's Veggie Sandwhich, which comes with chips and a pickle spear. I also ordered a side of fries, because they looked amazing (they were!). The girl at the counter was friendly and helpful, and my food came out in a relativly short amount of time considering that it was made after I ordered. I can see how during peak eating times the wait would be much longer, but I didn't experience that issue when I was there. All the food tasted delicious, and the serving sizes were MUCH larger than I had anticipated! I was only able to eat 1/2 my sandwhich and 1/2 my fries, and I ended up giving my leftovers to a hungry looking man further down the beach. I would gladly eat here again if I'm in the Santa Monica/Venice Beach area. read more

This review is just for the food at Perry's Cafe. I was trying to find a place to eat near Santa Monica Beach while being able to enjoy the beach itself and thought Perry's could be a great place. I ordered a 2 pizza slice meal that came with a side salad and ginormous soda. My friend got a chicken caesar salad and we added on a side order of chili cheese fries. When the cashier told me the total amount I asked her to repeat it because it didn't make any sense. All that together cost me $28. I have no idea how that even happened. One thing to remember is that the cafe is cash ONLY. I would be totally okay with paying $28 if I felt like the food was delicious. Unfortunately, my pizza had been sitting there for a while under a heat lamp. The crust was a little hard and cheese wasn't even stretchy anymore. The salad wasn't anything special. The best part of the meal were the chili cheese fries. I love fake cheese, the fake cheese you can get from 7-eleven. The kind you get from a jar in the chip aisle in the grocery store. This cheese on the fries reminded me of that. It made me really happy. Unfortunately, my friend is lactose (which I didn't know), so the cheese didn't make him or his tummy happy. We rented a surf board for a first time learner. Katie was incredibly helpful and gave us some safety and practical tips for us beginners. Customer service is wonderful and Katie was happy to take a picture for us afterwards. I highly recommend for surf board, bike, and tandem bike rentals! read more

Such a poor experience. I should have read the reviews for this place before going here. First off, we went on a weekday at 11:45 AM... It wasn't super busy and only two people were in front of us. After ordering, literally 18 minutes passed and the cashier called me up to the counter. I thought I was getting my food but was told they were out of tuna (for the tuna salad!). Turns out they hadn't even started my order. There is a sign that reads, "This is not fast food. Items are made to order." Except they're not even "made to order", seeing that after 18 minutes they hadn't even begun my order. I've worked in kitchens and I've worked front of the house... This is simply a poorly run establishment. And going by other reviews I can see now that this is an ongoing problem that hasn't been fixed. I'm guessing they survive because there is no other competition on the beach. Lazy people (like myself) simply walk up to the window and think they're getting a normal food experience... they're not. read more

Such a huge regret we decided to come here for something quick to go but this is crazy, look I get it it takes time and as your sign says this isn't a fast food place but over 30 min, really. I got lunch here while at the beach with friends. I love that the floor is sandy and that they have really good selections of food. There are great places to sit with umbrellas and some awesome late '90s-early '00s music playing! My only complaint was the food was expensive, but that's to be expected haha. This place knows you are at the beach and don't want to walk any further to get good food and they approach their food with that in mind. Don't get me wrong, everything is very average and nothing is bad, but the service and quality do not match up with the premium you pay for being on the beach. When we were there, you order and get a number to know your food is ready. However, the 45 min we were there eating I never heard them call out a number. You kinda just have to be watching the pickup window and hope you grab your food before someone else does. My salad was served in a cheap plastic bowl that looked like the top for a to go container, not even a bowl. For my money, I'd just take the 5 min walk to Main St and get some good food there. read more

The food here is overall pretty good but if you are actually hungry it may be better to park closer to Venice. I got the mahi manu bowl which was pretty delicious. The fish was soft and the bowl was filled with all sorts of healthy goodies. However the Caesar salad I got was drenched in the dressing and too salty overall. The views are amazing! You get to recline and watch all the beautiful people biking and walking down the beach! Def gets the appetite going ;). My least favorite part was waiting over 30 minutes to get my good. Misleading and mispriced! We found this place on-line and decided to rent some umbrellas and chairs. They have a little menu that lets you choose to rent by 1 hour 2 hours or all day. The choices are chairs, umbrellas, boards or bundles. We wanted a bundle of chairs and umbrella. As I said said the menu was very confusing and misleading. When we asked for clarification on the pricing the worker became rude and snapped at us with a "Dude!" And when we tried to tell him he can't charge us more than the advertised pricing that was both on the board and we also pulled up the website to show him the pricing on there as well he also "duded" us and told us he would have to ask somebody. The menu is just generally confusing and the people are not friendly. The previous day we went to another beach and rented umbrella and chairs and got double the time for half the price. It's just not the best place. At the beach stand here I waited probably 5+ minutes at the cash wrap for somebody to notice me so I could pay because I also purchased 2 bottles of cream a sun cream and aloe Vera for after, it was labeled as $8.50 and $7.00, again this was mispriced and I was charged $15.00 for the aloe Vera! I really needed it so I bought it but again, very misleading. Next time I will bring my own little pop up tent and stop at a pharmacy for my sunscreen. I would avoid this place if I could. read more

Overpriced, but I don't mind paying extra for a good meal. I ate breakfast and the bacon tasted weird. The hash brown was different. You would think because it's in a great location the food would be awesome. That's all it is, great location. That's the only reason they got two stars. IHOP or Dennys is better and cheaper but the view is amazing. read more

Location, location, location. Can't beat it. In fact this is the primary reason to eat at Perry's, though the food is much better than I thought. Sometimes even quite good especially when paired with a cup of Peet's coffee which they serve. A personal favorite of mine if the "King Richard turkey burger". Yum. Plenty of shade, and even a few sofas and comfy beach chairs that will make it hard for you to leave. The music is not always my style, but it never fails at creating a cool, relaxing ambience. Plenty of public restrooms on the other side of the building is also a plus. Perry's has several locations along the Santa Monica beach, but I keep coming back to this one (the one nearest to the end of Hollister St) mostly because it is the nearest to my house, and also the largest as far as number of tables and chairs. The servings are on the small side, and the prices a bit high. Service however is a complete gamble. Some of the girls are nice and friendly, some others, well, not so much... Also, be ready to wait for your order, unless you are the only one out there. During weekends, 20 minutes wait is the minimum. My experience has been that the hungrier you are, the longer it will take. It is a fact, and I have months of empirical data to back it up. It's science, man. :P Still, at the end of the day, the location is so cool, and the ambience so chill, and so "Santa Monica", that it is enough to smooth out most of these annoyances. In fact, I've just tweaked my rating to 4 stars from 3 because the longer I hang out here, the more forgiving I feel. Aloha. read more

Spent a couple of days in Santa Monica, and these kiosks were the only thing readily available near the beach. They offer food, rentals, and a small store with beach supplies. What we took advantage of was their beach butler service. For 70 dollars you get two chair rentals, an umbrella, a cooler with waters and ice, towels, and beach toys including boogey boards. They even clean everything up for you afterwards. This was a great service a little pricey but if you were to buy or rent chairs by the hour I think this is a lot cheaper option. The food at Perry's was actually not too bad for being near the beach, prices were fair and the convenience of not having to leave the beach is great too. The only downside is the wait time, specially around lunch time it took about 45 minutes to get our food. read more

We went to the beach cafe on our way to the beach on a nice Saturday. The wait was over 30 minutes, but it was an enjoyable wait on the beach to say the least. The lunch items were a bit pricey as we were late for breakfast (which looked more affordable). This is about as close as you can get in the area to those summertime episodes of Saved By The Bell where all of the kids worked at the beach club during their summer vacations (or, similarly, the summertime episodes of Beverly HIlls 90210 when the kids hung out at the beach club and where Kelly and Dylan first started their torrid affair). Anyone who has seen either of these classic 90s shows will immediately start to get that iconic imagery forming in their minds: rollerbladers, happy pop music playing over the speakers, girls in bikinis eating cheese fries. I used to think it was all a made-up Hollywood world, but at Perry's it's true! You get all of this, decent food, bike rentals, and some beachfront tables and chairs to enjoy the view. My only complaint was that our order too FOREVER to come out last weekend... they either forgot about it or there was some huge backup in the kitchen. But when my fish tacos finally came out they weren't half bad! While they have a few healthy options, it's clear that their specialties lie in classic American junk food, like burgers, pizza, fries, and soda. I've also rented a bike from them in the past and though it's not dirt cheap they make it easy to get one quickly and start pedaling away. Perry's is really the only point of sustenance for a long time on this part of the beach so I consider it a Santa Monica essential! read more

My friend and I were biking the boardwalk and since we were hungry we wanted something nearby. Sometimes when looking for a nearby spot, it's either hit or miss. Thankfully, it was a hit! It is funny some people think of LA as a vacation city when we just think of it as home. Have you ever wondered what all these visitors do when they are here? One "must" is to rent a beach cruiser and, well, just cruise and take in the beach and the sun. You soon realize - this is why we live here. This is what Perry's offers you. It offers you a visitors' view of our little world. Sure, Perry is just a smart entrepreneur who set up shop right along the water's edge and rents out bikes (and other stuff) older then yo mama, but at a fair price. It is locally run by some beach dudes who are friendly but forget the details (like returning your ID and credit card when you pay in cash). But what the hell, you are at the beach, you are renting a bike and for $15 bucks (tandem bike), you just bought an hour of fun. Great location for beach goers and tourists. My friend and I ventured to the beach bike path today and stopped in for a quick lunch. We ordered the hamburger and fries combo meal-$17.50 and the Turkey burger and fries combo: $18.50...! OUCH!! The fries were lackluster; I'll be blunt- horrible, cold and soggy. The burger wasn't bad! The so called turkey burger, my turkey burger loving friend threw it away, tasted like cardboard. Overall if you want overpriced food on the beach and don't want to walk to the pier or up the stairs to Ocean Ave then this will have to do; unless you pack a cooler. read more

You do pay extra for the location but it's worth it. If your looking for high end customer service, this is not your place. It's a beach cafe and there is only counter service unless you get the Beach Butler which is awesome but expensive. They serve you on the beach at the water front. Very romantic! Went to Perry's to utilize the beach butler service. We purchased the $50 package (2 lounge chairs, 1 big beach umbrella, side table). Our beach butler was a very friendly (16 year old looking male teenager) and promptly escorted us to our secluded relaxing area on the beach (they put a couple of dividers in the sand so no one comes and camps out right in front or next to you ... they provide the buffer space ... nice). He let us get settled and said he would check on us in a few to see how we were doing/if we needed anything. About 15 minutes later, our beach butler arrived and provided us a walkie talkie and informed us if there was anything we needed to call him on the walkie talkie. Well we are not very high maintenenace (just had lunch and brought a couple of bottled waters in our beach bags) ... along comes our beach butler about 30 minutes later with a small playmate ice chest and two large plastic pop up bottles of bottled waters and checked in with us to ensure everything was good. It was a windy day at the beach so we did not get to enjoy the lounge chairs as long as we would have liked for the price we paid, but it was a great experience/service and something to splurge on when you are on vacation at the beach (no sand to have to deal with on beach mats, towels or all over your body from being on the ground). They have higher end packages for the beach butler which includes beach towels, full lunch, drinks, etc. I would definitely use this service again and highly recommend to others. read more

Oh yes, I am a big fan of this place. I walk with my dog and at the end of our work-out, we love to sit down and chill. The service is friendly and helpful. The coffee is good, food is fresh and tasty, my dog gets his bowl filled with water and we are having a good time while watching the people go by. Friday morning, Sunday morning... we are there. I want to call this place a nightmare, but the redeeming factor was that the people working there were very nice and apologetic about it being a nightmare. The vegan sandwich I ordered ended up tasting really great. They toasted the bread, which caused some delay because the bread kept crumbling, and they added sprouts, which I love. It took them forever to get my order out (I mean, forever), but the woman making my sandwich was so apologetic that I just had to forgive them a little bit. I wish the people in back would wear hairnets and gloves. A lot of them had a lot of hair, and I just didn't like thinking where it would fall. Overall, the kitchen didn't look or feel totally gross, but the sanitary image could do with some improvement. It was also a bit pricey for what you get, although I was starving and happy to have ended up with something that was at least healthier than the alternatives. We're always at the beach on Saturday afternoons after a morning workout, so the fact that this place had at least a couple relatively healthy options was appreciated (Note, however, that this is *not* a healthy establishment--most of the menu is burgers, fries, bagels, etc, which of course can be a good thing if that's what you're looking for). It just took so long, though... it would have been faster to walk a few miles to anyplace else, honestly. Avoid this place at all costs. Yes, its convenient, but walking a little farther down the boardwalk will give you a MUCH better experience. I went to rent a bike yesterday, and everything seemed fine, $19 for 2 hours isn't bad. Then he asked to hold my credit card and my ID. I totally understand the credit card, but I was headed to the pier for drinks and it doesn't really help to not have your ID. We went back and forth for awhile and he finally said "You can have it back if you give me a $150 deposit". Is this guy for real? $150 for a $19 rental. Its ridiculous. I walked half a mile to Sea Mist bike rentals and not only did they not ask to keep my ID, but they were they friendlier, cheaper and open later. Don't waste your time. Another note: If you want chips and guac from this place, go somewhere else. Its mediocre, but the issue is the price. Its one of the only things on the menu without a price but I thought, how expensive can guacamole be? They charged me $15 for what was little more than a few tablespoons.
