    Huckleberry cornmeal cake

We came here for a friend's birthday dinner for a 10pm reservation (yes 10pm) and despite being seated late, I was really impressed! I mean Pernoi is headed by two culinary titans, so I'm not surprised. The attention to detail is lovely and the luxury yacht vibe is real. Bottled water ONLY -- none of MI's finest tap and in the non-bar area, they require jackets for men. Why not 5 stars then? For the price point and vision/ambition, the service just isn't up to par for several key reasons: *The training is clearly subpar. The guys coming around to introduce the food/ingredients clearly didn't know the dish very well nor could he pronounce the ingredients. Butchering the asian ingredients was like nails on a chalkboard for me. *For a place that demands jackets for me, I expect black AND white napkins. Thanks for the lint all over my black clothing! If you're interested in reading a play-by-play on the dishes: *For the "First" or appetizer section, I ordered the: King Crab Ravioli (daikon, coriander honey, croquette). This was AWESOME. It was basically like king crab two ways. There were two bite-sized king crab croquette which was rich, heavy (in a fantastic way) balanced by two "dumplings" wrapped in daikon; I loved how light and fresh this was! It was also served with some pickled beets. My husband ordered the salt roasted baby beets (black rice salad, whipped tofu, sesame seeds). This was a really interesting dish -- really sesame oil forward but it was nicely balanced. *For the "Second" section, I ordered the: Charred Octopus (black garlic romesco, panisse, salsa verde) - this dish was INSANE. The octopus was PERFECTLY cooked -- just get it. My husband ordered the Butter Poached Pumpkin (squash butter, porcini butter, shaved foie) -- BUTTER BUTTER BUTTER. it was so incredibly luscious. Wow. *For the "Third" section or main, I ordered the Roasted Lamb Loin (caponata, crispy artichokes, curry-carrot reduction). I was a little wary that this would be gamey but it wasn't at all! AMAZING. It's apparently marinated in black garlic. The sauce also had a hint of lemongrass. I didn't LOVE the caponata -- it was a bit greasy for my liking. *For dessert, I tried TWO out of the 5 options. The chocolate caramel banana was the only one they were out of. -- Huckleberry Cornmeal Cake (darjeeling custard, creme fraiche) - I'm glad I ordered this as the server let us know that they were going to switch it up. The darjeeling custard was PERFECT, so good. I expected the cornmeal cake to be like cornbread or something, but it was all a smooth cake texture. Could easily been like a blueberry muffin. I really enjoyed it! -- Turkish Coffee (guanaja flourless, cardamom orange, saffron) - It was beautiful with dark, rich chocolate balanced with strong punch of coffee. Yum.

    Salmon, amazing quality.

I have lived in NYC for the past 15 years and am pleased to report that this place stands up to some of the finest restaurants in the world. Growing up in Detroit, it was a real treat to have an exquisite meal here that manages to feel comfortable (I sat at the bar) despite the fine dining cuisine. I was particularly impressed with the salmon, the finest quality with an elegant torched ponzu execution. Simple, elegant, refined, and only the best ingredients. Enjoy!

A miraculous collaboration of notable Michelin one star Japanese French chef "Takashi Yagihashi" and legendary veteran chef Luciano DelSignore. Although Takashi's left the partnership after very early stage of the grand opening, yet you can find Japanese essence in Contemporary French dishes. One of must-go place for dating in Michigan.

I visited Pernoi during restaurant week in Birmingham with a friend (which is a great way to try course meals at nice restaurants for a good price). The service at Pernoi was great from the moment you walk in. They take your coat check and then you are promptly seated at your table (we reserved a table a day before). The ambiance is nice- dim lights, modern furniture and decor, nice high ceilings. The food, however, wasn't as memorable. They started off with some warm bread and 'chefs compliments.' It was some type of tartare bite that was too salty. We were able to pick an appetizer, entree, and dessert from a list for reaturant week. To be completely honest, I don't even remember the name of the dishes. As a gist, I ordered some tortellini dish in chicken broth for the appetizer, steak and potatoes for entree, and peanut butter profiteroles with caramelized bananas, bacon chocolate, and popcorn for dessert. The dishes were all pretty good. I ordered the "safer" choices, so nothing to complain about there. The part that stuck with me most was the bill (and not because of the price). They had customized Pernoi leather check presenters that were really nice. Overall, I would say it was a good experience. It's a nice place for a fancy dinner or night out.

This was the worst dining experience my wife and I have had in the city of Birmingham. The waitress was extremely rude from the outset and the food was diabolical. Thankfully both entrees were removed from the bill. We will not be returning ever again to this restaurant.

The short review: Extraordinary in every possible way. Excellent food, service and ambiance. Highly recommend for special occasions and when you want to treat your business associates to the most exclusive restaurant in Michigan. It is not inexpensive ($120+ per person plus drinks/wine) - but is a dining experience that you won't find anywhere else (Detroit or elsewhere). Pernoi is the joint culmination of the careers of Chef Luciano DelSignore and Chef Takashi Yagihashi . It is an fantastic blend of the very best Italian + Japanese + French cuisines - a melding that Takashi calls "confusion cuisine." The result is a menu like no other, and tastes that are deliciously unique. As expected, there is nothing out of place and nothing excessive about the interior design. The heroes of the night are the food and the person(s) you are with. If you don't have an exceptional dining experience, you came with the wrong people. The long review, as this is a new restaurant and not many have experience it yet: I've been a customer of Baccos for 15 years, hands-down the best Italian restaurant in metro Detroit. Becaue of that, my wife, Lindy Lenk and I, were invited to the first night of the soft opening, which featured items from an ala carté menu, full bar and a newly-assembled wait staff that was culled from metro Detroit and around the country. Our seating was early, at 5 p.m. Lindy had the honor of being the very first customer to enter Pernoi. She ordered the first drink from the bar; appropriately she chose the One Off Manhattan (Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, Lustau Sweet Vermouth, Zucca Rhubarbaro-Angostura Bitters $16). Pernoi is an intimate space. The bar accommodates 30 or so, the dining room perhaps ~40 (?). Jackets are required for men. Enter from the walkway alley off Maple. The bar area has three seating spaces in a cozy room, there are six stools at the bar, a bench that probably seats no more than eight people, and a half dozen tables near the window wall. The walk to the dining room is down a long hall. The open kitchen, on the right -- it is bustling and impressive. The dining room is an L-shaped space. As you approach, the space on the left has tables for two to four with a row along each wall, the forward space has tables for four to five people in a single row in the center of the room The floor-to-window walls are clad in sheers that are somehow substantial, architectural -- they are like columns that allow you to see the outside and keeps diners from feeling as though they are in a fish bowl. The music (different selections for the bar and dining room) was perfectly balanced and expertly selected. I often have trouble hearing conversations of people I'm with because the music is too loud in many restaurants and bars -- that was not the case at Pernoi. The artwork is dramatic and sublime; each piece has obviously been selected with utmost care. The wait staff was impeccable. Attentive, knowledgeable and nearly invisible, the way service at a fine dining restaurant should be. They obviously are there to advise if asked for guidance, but mostly to be at your service, so you will enjoy your dining companion(s) and focus on the fabulous food. Being the first night, the staff was understandably nervous, but consumate professionals. Since it was a soft opening, we were not offered the main menu; only the ala carté menu was available. The main menu, I understand, will be a prix fixe menu and change often, based on what is in season, fresh and captures the imagination of Lucian and Takashi. The wine list was also not available the night we were there; it will no doubt be an eclectic selection to pair with the food. We are looking forward to the full experience. We selected four items each, plus desert. I had tuna sashimi, foie gras torchon, rabbit agnolotti, Wagyu beef, pressed quince (desert). Lindy had tuna sashimi, King Crab ravioli, day boat scallops with truffle, ginger sesame king salmon, Turkish coffee (dessert). We each had a cocktail before dinner, several glasses of wine with dinner, espresso, and after-dinner cocktails. Food $185, pre-dinner cocktail and wine, $153. Since it was a perfect night (both food and weather), we sat in the rear patio to enjoy an after-dinner cocktail. The patio has a built-in fireplace and looks like it will be heated for cooler temps. It was a great setting to savor the perfect, exciting new experience of Pernoi.

    Outdoor seating.

I'm still dreaming about my dinner. It was beyond delicious. The breads are all made in-house and the sauce on the fish was light and perfectly spiced. The outdoor seating is just right for dining and appropriate social distancing. I'll be back for sure.

This was my first visit to Pernoi and I am definitely going back. The food and service here were phenomenal. First, the outdoor setting was perfect. The tent had a line of heaters in every open section so even though we were sitting outside it felt like we were indoors because we weren't cold. John, our waiter, was amazing! He knew every detail of the menu and gave great wine recommendations. Their 18oz steak was excellent and is a great share. The tiramisu was also a must and definitely the house meat cheese and olive board. I would definitely go back! Looking forward to our next visit.

Luciano, we bow to your passion of food and creating an amazing experience. From the bread basket to dessert, my tastebuds went to an Italian wedding (soup), to the Maryland shore (soft shell crab) to my grandmothers kitchen (tagliatelle bolognese). My husband and friends had their own adventure! We rounded out the night with pavlova, tiramisu, laughter and the commitment to do it again.

Veal carpaccio. Best I've ever had.
