He had looked up restaurants that served a full English breakfast, and Kennington Lane Cafe was highly regarded, and it happened to be a few minutes away from our B&B. We loved our breakfast so much that we went back a second day. What I liked about the menu was that is was easy to create exactly what you wanted. You could order a set breakfast (and easily add on extra sides), or you could pick and choose what you wanted, and make the breakfast as small or as large as needed to match your appetite. The breakfast I created had a small steak, fried mushrooms and tomatoes, and bubble and squeak. Delicious! I don't have an itemized bill of exactly what we ordered and the price of each item, but the totals on my credit card bill are £20.89 the first day and £20.50 the second day, and each bill included breakfast and coffee for two. Essentially, you can get a full breakfast for £10 -- a fantastic deal. [Yelp collections: Europe 2024; London, England; Poor and hungry?]

We started with some yummy cocktails and the okra fries which were delicious - if only okra always tasted this good. For mains, we shared the chicken tikka, black daal, paneer and garlic naan. Pretty standard Indian order. The chicken tikka was just too spicy and we weren't used to that so it went mainly eaten. My favorite was the black daal but again, it wasn't so amazing that I would go and have it again. Honestly the best dish we had was dessert - the basmati kheer is a perfect rice pudding with crème brûlée like topping. So good. Service was spotty, I constantly found myself trying to find our server or make eye contact with him. They were slammed on a Tuesday night (which I'm sure is the case every night) so that's probably just the way things are but it could've been better. Disappointed but willing to try again, also made me want to try some other Indian spots in London next.

We started with some papadum, which as usual is just an excuse/vehicle for mango chutney and yogurt sauce. The mains were average London curries, nothing to call home about, but also nothing that thrusts you into power on the ivory throne later. The sag gost (spinach and lamb) is solid here, and we wiped up every bit of it with the buttery naan. The rajma isn't a dish I've seen anywhere else, and it's honestly pretty good. French beans and chick peas cooked in a yellow slush of onions and peppers, it's a good way to earn back some food karma after all the other meaty meats. Ivory Arch transforms into a takeaway place on the other end linked by a small kitchen, so don't be afraid to holler at your waiter if you need anything. Poor guy is trying to run two joints at the same time, so resist helping yourself to the bar in the back. Bill came out to £20 per person, but the six of us had appetizers, mains, breads & rice, and multiple rounds of Tiger beers (and a parting shot round for the road just for luck).

Today I opted for the Tikka chicken nuggets (£5) and the Masala fries (£3). The food is made quickly and fried fresh in front of you. The chicken is rolled in a tangy tamarind and plum sauce, it is, in a word: delicious! They are large, tender pieces of meat, slightly crisp and full of moisture. Now to the fries, oh the fries! This has to be their signature dish. Again they are fried and mixed with spice. They are then topped with mint-cumin riatha and mango pulp. I am an absolute sucker for mango chutney and anything that goes with it so for me these fries were a dream - crispy, fresh indian infused goodness! I wouldn't recommend if looking for a healthy snack but if you're looking to indulge in something high fact and fully tasty this is your stop in Pop Brixton! The only reason I have docked them a star is due to the server. Sadly he was rather rude and grumpy - it costs nothing to serve with a smile and a bit of enthusiasm but I received nothing, not even with my Friday glee. A shame but the food is fantastic so food stars well deserved!
