Paid to fix issue with turbo. After many attempts to get it working correctly had to take it to another shop. It turns out John is incompetent. The other shop replaced the same parts with working ones and now it's fine. He is a crook. He used parts from China and slapped labels on it to look like it was from a local US based company. They did not have any record of that serial number. They gave me a discount on the replacement and it worked perfect. Also they removed a part to gain horsepower that made the vehicle not pass SMOG. I have been going to John for a couple of years. A friend from a local tire shop recommended him to me. He said that Performance Tech - John would not steer me wrong. Time after time he has provided me with good customer service. I was getting an oil change around the corner from his shop and was planing a trip south but wanted to get some work done before attempting the long drive. I called him to see if I could stop by so he could take a look some time that week. He took the time to come to me that same day instead. I have found him to be more knowledgeable and honest then any other mechanic I have dealt with. He has never done work I didn't need or try to sell me something I didn't want. I referred a friend to him: The dealership had given her a list of issues - work that needed to be done immediately to her mini. It would cost her over $2500 to do everything. They would attempt to do the work but if they found that the problem was not what they assumed it to be they would still charge her a service fee. I bought a used 01 Toyota Sienna % months ago and now I am having some trouble with it. I was referred to John Maskrey by the guys at Chatsworth Tire. I finally decided to change my car after a series of breakdowns and disappointments, as soon as I made the choice, gas prices sky-rocketed and I started researching fuel and performance mods, I had two choices, buy a Prius (hate the damn car) or see a specialist. I opted for the specialist. After talking to several friends and talking to the Audi dealership I ended at performance tech. John, was super helpful, and so knowledgeable, he explained all of what could be done to my vehicle, and without gimmicks or hidden prices! Ahh, it's great when you find a mechanic that's not all about the money. My engine had been making a ticking sound that had been gradually getting worse to the point of "Ok, time to take this to a shop NOW or I'm going to need a tow". I first took it to a shop I had used once before that seemed decent before, and after a day they called me up to tell me that it was a bearing problem and quoted me $1300 MINIMUM just to open everything up and "see" if that was the problem. I happened to mention to a coworker what I was going through and she mentioned that she goes to Performance Tech and that they are really fair and honest. So I took my car there and John, who was either the manager or owner told me to pull it in and he looked at it while I waited. About 45 minutes later he came out and told me it was a belt that was fraying and slapping against something in the engine, and that was what was making the noise. I was expecting him to write up a quote and that I'd have to come back at a later time to pick up the car, but he had already changed the belt and the car was ready to go! He said not to worry about any labor and charged me just for the part. I almost felt guilty not paying more. I've finally found a reasonable and honest mechanic, something all too hard to find (especially in LA). No more putting off repairs - it's always been such a stressful process and hassle. Customer for life now and won't hesitate to call or stop in at the first sign of a problem. No more car repair anxiety! read more

I had heard this shop was good with turbo diesels. I wanted some modifications made to my VW Golf TDI. The owner John discussed the various options that were available and their costs. He discussed with me how I liked to drive the car. He devised the perfect package at a really reasonable price. He didn't try to up-sell me or play any tricks, in fact just the opposite, he explained why his recommendation would serve best. I didn't have to play any games on prices. He gave his estimate and I authorized the work. The car was completed without delay and was perfectly done. The car is like a whole different car, it hums and the performance response is amazing and.. believe it or not, if I can keep my foot off the pedal, it gets better fuel mileage than before. (one of the amazing things about mods on turbo diesels). The tune and modifications keep the car in perfect and safe operating parameters, yet the thing rips. The price he charged me was really reasonable. Don't expect undercut bottom barrel prices for cheap parts and shoddy work. You can expect top notch work hi-end parts and labor at really moderate prices, much better than dealerships or some of the well known "performance" shops. He stands behind the product as well. If you compare the mods he does on the TDI's with some of the other well known modifiers, its a whole different level believe me. I've seen some of John's other performance projects. Trucks, Suburbans, Mercedes, they look great and they all are over the edge sick in performance. I'm talking about stock cars that are really fast! John is a very knowledgeable mechanic who keeps you informed and does the job right the first time. I really appreciate when someone has a discussion as to what the issue could be and all the steps he plans to take to resolve the issue, and John is that guy. I had a check engine light and I had another shop look at it. They only pulled the codes and told me I would need a very expensive repair. John took the time to look at what the issue could be where actually looked at each part of the intake manifold assembly to see what the problem areas were. He always called and kept me in the loop and he only replaced the parts that were needed. My car is running as smooth as when I first bought it. John is very intelligent, considerate, and capable mechanic. read more
