Mike was great. Met us with board and wetsuits and met each of us at our level. He was very hands on and out there in the water with us the whole time. We met by the bathrooms of El Porto by lifeguard station 12 and picked up our wetsuits from their cars. From there, we headed towards a less crowded portion of the water by the rocks, and did a quick yoga flow before going into the basics of how to pop up and hold the board. After the lesson, we got assigned our boards and went off into the water. I think both instructors tried to spread their attention as evenly as possible. I was able to stand up multiple times and surf some one-foot waves (go me!). The time flew by, and once it was over, we brought the surfboards back to their cars. They'll take Venmo for tips. I would suggest wearing your flip flops to the beach since the ground was really hot, and also bringing a water bottle for post-surf. There's paid parking available in the lot although the meters seem to be broken since I still got a ticket even though my parking should've been valid. Otherwise there's very limited street parking. You can leave your valuables in the instructor's car. You can book private lessons on the website or small group lessons as well. Definitely book the lesson - it's a great workout and you'll have so much fun!

The sign up process was easy, so I did so online and locked it in! While my kids (8 and 9 years old) are very beginner surfers, they love the beach, and the laid back days and small group experience offered by Camp Surf was a prefect fit for both of them. We did not go in with high expectations to get them riding waves within days, so we were okay that there was not a ton of pressure to do so, but I imagine if you have expectations and kids interested in doing so, the Camp Surf staff will follow your guidance. Huge thanks to Cameron and Claire, their main counselors for the week for making sure they had fun first and foremost.

I found Surf Blessons at a local beach event, and he totally seemed like a good guy. I soon followed him on social media, where I was intrigue and entertained- sometimes laughing at his posts. He's very animated and very knowledgeable of the ocean's movements. I was a little bit uneasy at first. I have always wanted to learn how to surf, but didn't feel too cool about being unable to head into the water to learn. Kawika brushed it all aside, and made me feel like a duckling as he led me into the waves. Before long, I was just like a baby duck, happily splashing and learning to ride the waves safely to the shore. My body is asymmetrical, so my balance isn't like a normal person's. With his long time of experiences, he was able to tailor me accordingly to my astonishment. I've had multiple lessons with this fellow now, and I've learned something new each time we go out into the ocean. Which is perfect, because the conditions change almost always.

He helped them catch waves, he goes out there with them and sets them up for success. They had boards and wetsuits for the kids to wear if you don't have your own. The boards were in good condition and they have boogie boards as well. My youngest is just learning to boogie board so he was more comfortable with that and only going out with Brandon, which I'm totally fine with as long as he tries. The coach-to-kid ratio is amazing and all the kids have the BEST time. Also, you have the option of going for 1.5 or 3 hours, so if you have a little one that tires out quickly, you don't have to pay for a whole day. The Hermosa Beach Cities website can be a little wonky to maneuver - but it's worth the few minutes to give your kid a week they will LOVE.

The team arrived on time with surfboards, bodyboards, tent and wetsuits for the kids. They helped them every step of the way and were engaged 100% of the time. I really appreciated that while the coaches worked with the kids there was always one coach who was just looking out for their safety. They easily gained the kids' trust and I was surprised how kids who had zero interest in surfing eventually tried it and had fun doing it, thanks to the coaches' encouragement and enthusiasm. Perfect combination of fun and professional! They were also a pleasure to work with on email/phone/text amd that's so important to busy working mamas like me.
