We met by the bathrooms of El Porto by lifeguard station 12 and picked up our wetsuits from their cars. From there, we headed towards a less crowded portion of the water by the rocks, and did a quick yoga flow before going into the basics of how to pop up and hold the board. After the lesson, we got assigned our boards and went off into the water. I think both instructors tried to spread their attention as evenly as possible. I was able to stand up multiple times and surf some one-foot waves (go me!). The time flew by, and once it was over, we brought the surfboards back to their cars. They'll take Venmo for tips. I would suggest wearing your flip flops to the beach since the ground was really hot, and also bringing a water bottle for post-surf. There's paid parking available in the lot although the meters seem to be broken since I still got a ticket even though my parking should've been valid. Otherwise there's very limited street parking. You can leave your valuables in the instructor's car. You can book private lessons on the website or small group lessons as well. Definitely book the lesson - it's a great workout and you'll have so much fun!

The sign up process was easy, so I did so online and locked it in! While my kids (8 and 9 years old) are very beginner surfers, they love the beach, and the laid back days and small group experience offered by Camp Surf was a prefect fit for both of them. We did not go in with high expectations to get them riding waves within days, so we were okay that there was not a ton of pressure to do so, but I imagine if you have expectations and kids interested in doing so, the Camp Surf staff will follow your guidance. Huge thanks to Cameron and Claire, their main counselors for the week for making sure they had fun first and foremost.

The boards were in good condition and they have boogie boards as well. My youngest is just learning to boogie board so he was more comfortable with that and only going out with Brandon, which I'm totally fine with as long as he tries. My oldest was able to catch waves on his first day, Brandon really helps and gives one on one instruction. The kids were friendly and my kids had fun.

Travis took my girlfriend and myself out for a beginner's lesson a few months ago, and I didn't…read moreknow what to expect, given it was my first time surfing or taking a surfing lesson. Plus, this was for my gf's birthday, so I wanted the experience to be perfect. Travis delivered on that in every way. He had wetsuits and boards waiting for us, and we got to know his warm, friendly spirit on the short walk from his house to the beautiful nearby beach. After a couple minutes of instruction, we were out on the water, Travis expertly calling out when to go for a wave or when it wasn't quite right and should be passed for the next one. After each attempt, he let us know where we went wrong, and what to adjust for the next go around. Overall, I felt like I got a highly concentrated lesson from a expert. At no point did I feel like any time was wasted, and the experience felt safe and fun while also feeling productive. By the end of the lesson, we were completely spent, lying down smiling and laughing, feeling a cool breeze under the late morning sun.
