My daughter started peppertree when she turned 4. She just turned 5 and is now about to leave to kindergarten. I was absolutely scared out of my mind finding the first school for her to attend. She is my second child. My first child is non verbal autistic, so I'm only used to dealing with the special Ed part of public schools. This was my first time finding a school for my child who can understand things, learn academically, ECT. I know for a fact I am spelling her name wrong-but you pronounce the name as "Ms. Ken". When I dropped my daughter off for the first day of school, I absolutely fell in love with Ms Ken. And for the entire year, Ms. Ken has been the most amazing, most compassionate, most caring teacher I have ever experienced. My daughter has learned the alphabet, counting her numbers, about all kinds of animals, and SO much more, in just one year. She even came home one day and said all 12 months-i didn't even know she knew all her months!! I was shocked and SO proud of her! I feel like my daughter has blossomed in the one year she has been with peppertree. You can tell Ms Ken is so passionate about her job. I am SO happy that Ms. Ken was my daughter's first teacher experience she got to have for her first time going to any school ever. I am also so thankful that my daughter has learned the love of America at this school as well. She always has projects coloring red, white and blue stuff and she always gets excited saying "mom I drew the American flag colors today!". It is SO important for kids to learn love for their country at an early age, and you just never see that appreciation of America in public schools anymore, so that's oe thing I am SO grateful for. My child loves America and learns about America in Ms Kens class. I'm so happy about that. Ms Cheryl, the director is a ray of sunshine. Every morning I drop my daughter off, Ms Cheryl greets us with the warmest welcome, and never forgets to say goodbye when we leave. It's those little gestures that makes us feel so comfortable. My son 10 month old son went for one day. I dropped him off and picked him up at noon. There were a lot of kids behind the baby gate and the teacher seemed disconnected/cold. I was also a new parent and a teacher just randomly let me in with no code. When I picked up my son they also let me take him with no ID required. I knew something didn't sit right so I decided not to bring him back. Mind you we are both military members and depend on this service. I called the director that night regarding my decision to not bring him back and she said that they would most likely unable to refund my deposit. Two weeks later, I called asking if they had reviewed the policy to see if I could receive my deposit back. She then disclosed that they were outside of ratio while I was in the classroom and that I would not happen again. This is concerning for me because at the time I did not realize they were outside of ratio. The director openly admitted that they could not provide as good of care as on base and that she was a prior director on base. If a spot randomly opens for your child it is probably because someone like me immediately disenrolled their child. read more

My two young kids started attending Peppertree Montessori in Jan of 2023. I had toured several daycare centers and was very impressed with Peppertree Montessori. I have one in the toddler class and one in the infant class. The staff are not only well trained but genuine in their care for my kids. If there are days that my kids have a difficult drop off they will call me and let me know that they have calmed down and are doing an activity. This help with my anxiety of leaving them. The Montessori environment allows my kids to learn life skills and to be able to explore what interest them. They also have structured leaning such as going over certain letters, counting and color recognition. The director, Cheryl Gillins, has been amazing from the beginning. She has been extremely helpful and prompt with any paperwork I have needed while applying for childcare fee assistance. Both of my kids loves to say Hi and Bye to her every time we pass her office and she always takes the time to speak to them as well as myself. She is continually checking in with the teachers to ensure they have taken their breaks and a steps in to ensure the teacher to student ratio is always maintained. I can not say enough wonderful things about this daycare. I was very nervous about taking my kids to daycare, but they have taking the time to ensure both of my kids are well taken care of and they keep me informed. They use an app so that I can see how my kids are doing during the day and I can message them if I have any questions. If you are looking for a daycare where you know that your children who'll not only be taken care of but will be encouraged to play and learn I highly recommend Peppertree Montessori. read more

It is very difficult for me to write this review as my daughter attended Peppertree Montessori for nearly 2 years. Prior to the exodus of 4 teachers plus the director within a matter of weeks, this school was great. My 4 year old loved attending this school. However, you cannot trust the new director's word. She will make verbal commitments to you and later DENY that she did. There is a serious lack of cummunication between the school and upper management (Lynn Garcia), and when that happens the parent somehow gets blamed. I was absolutely shocked when my reported concerns were not taken seriously by upper management and I was dismissed. What's even more scary, is as soon as I reported I would need to involve licensing, the new director emailed me and said THAT SAME DAY would be my daughter's last day with the school. read more

My kids are 4 and 3, and have been at Peppertree Montessori now for two years. When we first arrived, we were pleased enough with the school. They were wonderful at partnering with us on the potty training journey, which was a big deal to us. However, the turnover was quite high for the teachers, and there seem to be some issues behind the scenes for the staff. Our oldest went through several teachers in a few months. That all changed when Miss Cheryl arrived a few months ago. Everything has completely turned around for the better. Miss Cheryl is the Director every parent hopes will be at their daycare/school. She is passionate about what she does, she loves children, she supports the teachers, and she is active in the classrooms, and knows everyone's names. The teachers that she has hired are fantastic educators and love the children, and there is no more turnover. Miss Cheryl really has high standards for the teachers, and it shows. I also want to take a moment to sing the praises of Miss Hiqynos, Miss Julie, Miss Mary, Mr. Shaheen, and Miss Sandra. Those are the teachers and assistants in my children's classrooms. My kids ADORE them. My oldest is incredibly shy and his love and adoration for Miss Hiqynos has been incredible to experience. My youngest is with Miss Julie and feels exactly the same. These teachers are an extension of our parenting team, and I feel so touched seeing how thrilled my kids are on Mondays to go to school to see them. And best of all, they are over-prepared to enter kindergarten. I cannot say enough positive things about these teachers, and Peppertree as a whole under Miss Cheryl's leadership. read more

After our initial tour, I knew that Peppertree was the best choice for our kids' early education. What I didn't know is that we would also gain an incredible community. As parents we all want caregiving and education pros who nurture and invest in our kids as if they were their own, which has been our experience at Peppertree. All three of our kids have been attending Peppertree for nearly three years now, and one of them recently graduated their kindergarten program. Not only was our child prepared for first grade, but we just had a conference with his teacher where we discussed how his reading, writing, and math are hovering around the third-grade level -- thanks to the teachers at this school! Another one of our three is more hyper and "spirited" as they say, which has been a non-issue in the attentive and compassionate environment at Peppertree. The entire staff has been very professional and supportive -- offering everything from a hug on the tough days to one-on-one guidance when necessary to help our child (and our family) thrive. They have offered several savvy and effective recommendations with which to meet our specific challenges that have always helped our child get back on track. I am impressed with the staff's experience and capability to pivot when faced with very diverse types of personalities and/or aptitudes. It's also fascinating to watch the teachers collaborate with the kids to help them learn about good health, compassion, critical thinking, and accountability while simultaneously teaching traditional (Montessori) curriculum. In other words, they address the entirety of a human being and the type of human we're teaching them to be. Last Thursday we received a letter informing us that 4 teachers, including my 4 year olds teacher, the director and associate director, and another teacher were leaving the very next day (Friday). This was very suspicious many parents reached out for reasons including why we were notified with such short notice. We received a response which was not satisfactory in terms of why wr were alerted so late (my son doesn't go to school on fridays so couldn't even say goodbye to his wonderful beloved teacher). This incident as well as changes happening are really concerning as I saw my son in an overfilled class when I picked him up on the day of this chaotic letter. We tried to setup a zoom call with the director, who was moved to administration in February (another change) but back all of a sudden, and she said she was too busy this week. It's Monday so we won't have an answer for another 7 days? I don't trust that my child are in the best care at this point and was going to place my 3rd son in July but am now second guessing. Marianne c or someone from prece can you please reach out or provide contact info so we can get answers and assurance about the direction and future of peppertree? I would at least like to understand why all of these changes are happening all of a sudden, not just last week, but also the director being moved to garden grove or corporate earlier this year. Don't trust their word...especially Abigail! My girlfriend called and spoke to Abigail about our 3yr. old joining this preschool because we weren't satisfied with our current provider. Abigail informed my girlfriend that there are plenty of open and available spots when she called. No mention of a deposit to hold her spot, a list, or anything. Abigail says "there are plenty of spots" available. A few days past and my girlfriend attempted to contact this preschool to confirm a start date, since we have given our 30 day notice to the current preschool. After days of not being to reach someone she finally gets a hold of Abigail and she says "they are full". This is unacceptable and a terrible lack of communication by the part of Abigail and this preschool. read more

Am I writing angry? You bet I am. This place is about as pretentious as it gets. They act as if they are more than a glorified daycare. Newsflash, you are a daycare to 95% of your attendees. They have the most inconvenient rules imaginable. Like keeping with the local school systems calender. December = you pay for a full month, you get 7 days of care. Don't even think about dropping your child off after 9am, that's a big no-no. Unless they have a doctors appointment, then it's 'relaxed' to 11am. Today my child had a bit of a melt down in the morning so I kept her home for a few hours. When I called to drop her off I got told "absolutely not" Umm...I pay YOU?! Also, don't expect to interact with the teachers unless it's a scheduled parent teacher conference. That's frowned upon. You must write them a note and they will write you back. FFS at my last place I spoke with her teacher every single day morning and evening. They don't keep track of jackets for outside time. Twice we had brand new jackets 'lost'. I looked over the winter holidays for a new place and unfortunately came up with nothing, but after today I am going to look again and expand my search. This is ridiculous! If you want high priced psuedo perfection with lots of restrictive rules, go for Peppertree. If you like keeping in constant contact with your child's daycare provider, I suggest looking elsewhere. read more

Our son attends preK here. After the nightmare we had with our previous daycare this is a breath of fresh air. The website is pretty helpful in explaining the deposit to hold a spot since sometimes there is a waiting list, like most schools that aren't public. Even just typing in fees for the school it comes up to explain pricing. You can call to have a tour to view the property, meet the staff and teacher your child will be with. I've noticed a huge difference in my son. He enjoys getting up in the morning to go to school and see his friends. His vocabulary has increased, he sleeps better, he is all around in a great place. Peppertree Montessori just opened a new school in Temecula and we have enrolled my 4 year old son there. While it is only his first week, my husband and I are already very impressed! Last week, I spent a few hours with my son in an "orientation class" so he could get used to the room and teachers and I could observe the program. I am very excited for my son to learn and grow with this school. I am confident it will help him immensely in preparing for kindergarten. Everything is very clean and the structure of the classroom can only bring great things. My son started in their infant program and is now in their toddler program. I'm always blown away by how much my son learns and how far his language has developed at only 2 years of age. That shows me that Peppertree is much more than a daycare and that the teachers really care about learning as well as playing. My son is always excited about going to school and we've been happy with all of the staff at Peppertree. I have not experienced any of the complaints other reviewers have had, his teachers have remained constant over the past 2 years and we always receive a report of any injuries that might have happened at school. My main concern is the frequency and severity of reprimands witnessed. It can be a downer. Based on just in the 10-20 minutes per day when I am dropping off and picking up my child, I'd wager that during any given minute of the Peppertree day at least one child is being corrected. I understand that little kids need boundaries, but here it sometimes feels like a culture of correction. The sternness some of them convey when they tell a child to quiet down or slow down or sit down etc. feels oppressive. I know how the tone and facial expression of the teacher affects me, so I can only imagine how scary it might feel for a 3-5 year old. Teaching kids to respect rules I understand, but at what cost? I also want my child to learn kindness and warmth and to have their sense of wonder and exploration and silliness nurtured. I just don't want my child's spirit dampened and learn to dislike school because of constantly angry teachers. Some teachers are actively engaged with kids and seem to enjoy their work. But observe for a few minutes (unnoticed) and you can see some staff sitting by themselves silently on the playground, chatting with fellow teachers about personal matters, not interacting with your child on arrival or departure, or being excessively harsh while scolding of one or two students so that it instills fear in the whole class. Sometimes when I walk by a teacher imitating a bump on a log I just want to grab her and shake some life into her and shout Wake Up--This Is My Child I Am Trusting You With! There are ongoing typos in their materials, signage, and online media. This depletes confidence in the quality of linguistic modeling children receive. I have also heard multiple spoken grammatical mistakes such as incorrect words or verb tenses. My advice is to ask to observe some rooms' teachers prior to enrolling. And once enrolled, stick around for awhile when you pick up your kid up. Play with them or have them show you some work so you can observe the teachers. Numerous researched sources conclude the that the teacher is the most dominant factor in the quality of a student's education, so it is vital to watch and listen to them teach instead of having a couple minutes to assess them in the irrelevant dynamic of a parent 'conference'. There are some great teachers here who are very engaged with kids and very positive. When I ask my child about which teachers are most enjoyed and why it is clear which ones are highly involved, love their jobs, and interactive. To those teachers who recognize the value not just in "the work" but also in the children's social and emotional development, thank you. You are the reason I don't home school my kid. read more

My son has been attending Peppertree for almost a year now. First and foremost, he loves the school. He enrolled at just 3 years but we are moving now & its just before his 4th birthday. *My biggest concern from the school would be that there IS quite a large turnover in teachers there. My son has had 4 teachers since he started there. He barely met the first, was very fond of the 2nd and had a hard time after she left after only 2 months, finally came around to the 3rd and we started seeing progress & now she's leaving. The 4th will actually be the Director of the school, who I have met only briefly, & was just told she will take over for the remainder of the year. I have been annoyed and concerned about the turnover but we are moving now so I wont be addressing it. The teachers overall have been excellent and we liked them all. My son has thrived there and is learning so much. The kids seem to stick around so at least he has had the same friends for some time now. All the children are very sweet. He likes the tasks they are given and the Montessori approach is different. This is our first experience with it and we like it so far. I plan on keeping him in a Montessori school until Kindergarten. *The teachers are not very approachable. Took them awhile to engage with my husband and I.. and you have to ask questions. If I dont ask.. they dont tell. But they usually tell me everything I need to know. They do kind of just stand back and watch. Not engaging a whole lot with the children. I think thats part of the Montessori way?? Bothered me at first too.... *The Menu there is usually available on the Monday when I drop my son to school. It gives me every snack & lunch the kids will get for the week. The food is excellent in my opinion. I AM VERY PICKY with what my child eats. Its usually organic and healthy so for me to like their Menu.. trust me its good. I love that my kid gets a hot meal for lunch almost every day. There is always fruit, veggies, protein. Yes, the snacks are a little small. Usually just crackers and juice.. but sometimes it's hummus and veggies.. Lunch is salads w/ bread & fruit, shepards pie & fruit, Mac & cheese & fruit, Pasta & veggies, ect. its all usually pretty tasty sounding. *Drop & pick up hasnt been a problem. they have been very kind, even when I was late on a payment or short by $10... nice people. SO if you knew that one of these nasty reviews was written by someone who would bring their child to school daily reeking of marijuana and cigarettes would you consider them to be a reliable, trust worthy, upstanding citizen/source? Or that the part she left out of the story was that her child was at a park later that day and fell off the monkey bars and then started complaining about pain in her arm? Perhaps not the best person to take advice from when selecting a school? There are also others written by people who are just down right negative people who always have something to complain about! I am sure you are wondering how I may have this information? I have been a teacher at Peppertree Montessori for the last five years! ALSO my own children have attended there. INFACT I moved away from Oceanside and moved back here after I hated every single Montessori school from North L.A to Santa Barbara. I didn't want to work or have my daughter attend. Sadly in this field and in this town in particular there is a high teacher turn over. We are right by a military base and people move ALL the time! This school is also run a bit differently in order to accommodate working and military parents. Thank goodness for that! Most Montessori schools close at 3, Peppertree offers before and after care. This means that the teachers work longer hours, some can handle it, and sometimes they can't. We have also had staff members return to school to further their education, and some have retired. Working with children in this age group is an extremely taxing and exhausting job, but also the most rewarding one you can have! The wonderful teachers that do stick around are very passionate about educating these young minds and have them working to their full potential. Far beyond what most think they are capable of! These teachers are responsible for meeting the individual needs of 25 children in their classrooms DAILY! This is NOT public school where they all learn the same things at the same time! These teachers are highly skilled and trained and introduce lessons when the child is ready for them. My own son was reading at age three, and doing division at age four! He has been in the gifted program in his elementary school and now in middle school gets nothing but A's! I owe this to his Montessori beginnings! I can't even begin to tell you how much I love the ladies that run this school! Ms. Eve, Ms. Dana and Ms. Shelly are the most kind hearted compassionate women you can find! It is a shame that people usually only write reviews when they are angry about something, and not when they are happy with a service. Our daughter has been attending Peppertree for over a year. She started in the infant program and is now in the toddler program. We have had an excellent experience with the school. Our daughter's language development is very advanced for her age, and we like how the program encourages the children to be independent but also help one another. The older children were very welcoming to my daughter when she transitioned to her new classroom, and she adapted to the new class structure amazingly well. She also is learning so many things that she would not yet be learning in a traditional daycare environment. Extremely high turn-over of employees and teachers. My son has had so many new teachers and "teacher aids" I can't even keep track, constantly seeing new faces, and not a single courtesy notice to the parents about new people in the classrooms.. Mostly young girls with very little experience and education (quite incompetent really). No one approaches me when I drop or pick up my son to tell me about his day etc., all teachers are standing around on the playground chatting. Forget about them reminding kids to put on a jacket in the winter and sunscreen/hat in the summer- half the time when I pick up my son outside on the playground during the summer his water bottle is empty and he is so hot and red from the sun... Teachers leave around 4 pm, and "helpers" come to watch the kids outside, and to any of my questions, they say "I'm not his teacher". Apart from some emails about school's days off, no communication with parents whatsoever. Not the cheapest school, AND it is closed for almost over entire month in a year (that we still pay for!) if you count all the holidays, "teacher in session" days, spring/ winter breaks, 2 days that they give themselves off in August for no reason etc. It could be a good school, if teachers and owners cared enough. read more

The pros is the cleanliness and the grounds are nice. There are some sweet teachers & staff. The cons is that if you dare bring up questions or concerns about the curriculum or safety concerns you as a parent are not validated but a bit ridiculed. For paying high prices this school I think the natural concerns parents have for their children should be taken more seriously. My child went there almost a year and the owner when there never introduced herself or welcomed us to the school which was a bit disappointing. read more

My son had his last day at Peppertree after 2 1/2 years there. He is reading at a 2nd grade level (he's 5) he puts away his own toys, he is confident and kind to everyone. He is polite. This is a school, not just a daycare and we think we did him a great service by having him attend the Peppertree Montessori school. We could have put him anywhere, but never considered anywhere else once he started here. As for the teacher turnover, this was not the fault of the school, it was just a series of life issues with the teachers - and they have all been very high quality. The other children who attend have been great kids for the mostpart, and I always felt my son was safe, surrounded by people who cared about him, and able to be an individual. My two children attended Peppertree for a little over a year in the Primary program. I looked around for a school I felt was clean, safe and had a good student-teacher ratio. For me, Peppertree was a clear choice. I am so happy my children had the opportunity to have such a great first school experience. Everyone was always so warm and friendly. It was comforting to see how well my children warmed up to all of the teachers and everyone always knew them by name. Academically, my children have surpassed where I thought they would be for their ages but what is most impressive to me are the other skills they learned at Peppertree. Teachers focus on the children becoming independent as well as encouraging positive relationships with each other. In addition to the wonderful staff of teachers, the classrooms are always clean, organized and the materials are updated to reflect the current curriculum while also including the traditional Montessori materials. My children were enrolled for schools days but sometimes I needed them to stay for extended (day care) hours due to conflicts with our work schedules. I probably would not have been able to keep my job without this flexibility. Peppertree was a great environment to allow my children to grow into confident, flexible children who are eager to learn. Their year at Peppertree set a solid foundation for a positive school experience and I am so grateful for the memories they made at Peppertree. read more

Peppertree is a place where I can call home. The staff is friendly and very welcoming. Children who leave Peppertree are well prepared for the public school system. There curriculum is very well planned out and includes lessons on grace and courtesy, our universe,the continents and the biology of plants and animals. Nice place, but. Very true about high turn-over. In 3 years that my son has been there, we've had 8! Depends what teacher you get- some are super nice, but some are very questionable. I'd stay away from the babies room- they have 14 babies there now, and sorry to say, nannies there are anything but nurturing. I looked, just out of curiosity, and music was blasting and all the babies were keeping each other awake crying. Sorry, but that many babies in one room is just too many. Also true about drop off- they say (even if you have a doc appointment!), that dropping off later is "distracting" to the class. Really? For 2 year olds? I've counted and they are closed 20 days a year- that's just for the holidays (not weekends). That's almost a month of PAID care. If anyone from the school staff is reading this: please improve your communications with parents, they will ALWAYS appreciate it. I'm given a "daily" when I pick up my little one- a piece of paper with check marks. As a mom who is trusting more than her life in your hands every day I need to hear from teachers about my kid- little things like he tied his shoe! He made a new friend! My son has been attending for almost 2 years and my daughter for almost 6 months. It's great to not worry about food. My son was so picky and will eat a large variety of foods thanks to the chef on staff. Everyone has always been friendly. The staff turn around is my biggest concern but with a private school this is normal. This is by far the best school in Oceanside. My son is reading at a second grade level. The teachers are always attentive and know all the kids by first name. I think the negative reviews are from people that have not seen what other schools offer. This is mainly daycare and not a structured learning environment. Ceral for breakfast yes, some kids have egg allergies. Can't come after 9, yes, they are in the middle of instruction this is explained on your first day. I wouldn't want my child loosing time of instruction because a family is running 2 hours late. I love the Montessori system and highly reccomend this school to my friends. read more
