Its like a lot of Melbourne's pub were about 15 years ago - and I say that in a good way - its just very friendly and unpretentious. The food is good without being excellent, and the drinks are quite cheap - but the atmosphere is the big drawcard. There doesnt seem to be any dress code or any security guards or anything else like that which can cause conflict and the barstaff are really friendly. Looking forward to my next trip to Launceston and the Royal Oak Hotel!

They are situated on the river and are close by Cataract Gorge (DO NOT MISS CATARACT GORGE) The rooms are modern, but the set up is a little awkward (you need your card key twice: First to access the entryway that services two rooms; Second to get into your actual room)-can you imagine my poor neighbours if I had stumbled in drunk? (Oh wait, I DID stumble in drunk-hope I didn't disturb anyone!) The service is personal and very friendly and makes this feel like a small hotel. It is probably the most modern hotel in Launnie and very comfortable so I would highly recommend it if you're visiting the area.

Modern décor surrounded our king size bed - much of it exclusive to the hotel (you'll love the window blind!). The ceiling is probably 12ft high, and the ensuite quite roomy. The hotel now has in-room free wi-fi as well as cabled broadband. The lobby and restaurant/lounge are compact, but classy and well looked after by the staff. Hotel Charles is located a short walk South of the CBD on a plot previously part of the Hospital. It shares many of its parking spots with a number of businesses during the day, so there are signs reserving spaces for hotel guests only from 5:30pm to 8:30am. If you can only get one of those spaces when you arrive, the obligation to shift would be a downside of your stay.

There is a great restaurant and bar near the lobby. The lounge within the restaurant in bar makes it very casual and welcoming. Our rooms are very modern nice and clean and brilliant . The only concern we had and problem was they were still updating half of the hotel and we were walking through a construction zone to and from our room every day and had to put up with a bunch of noise from contractors. I'm not sure the answer would've been here but they can't work on all the rooms at once but it was not the best situation. Once the hotel is completely updated and there is no more construction, it will likely hit a five star Yelp rating. I'll stay here next time hopefully it's all done and we have a great day..

WOMEN TRAVELLING ALONE, BEWARE!!!…read more I am a female Sales Rep who travels alone for work all throughout the year, staying at numerous hotels around Australia. NEVER IN MY 5 YEARS ON THE ROAD HAVE I EVER FELT AS THREATENED TO BE A WOMAN TRAVELLING ALONE, AS I DID AT THIS HOTEL. First of all the chain lock on my door wasn't working - I stuffed it with wet toilet paper to stop the chain from dropping out. I woke at 10:30pm to noise at my door, I had received a seedy booty call note from a fellow guest who I had no previous encounter with. After midnight, someone (who I can only assume is the seedy fellow guest) rang my door bell and hung around out side my door talking to his friend. As I was alone, terrifed and knew that the chain lock is not working, I call the night security number. I got told by the night security guy that he would call the seedy guests room and tell them to be quiet. I stressed that as I am alone, uncomfortable with the entire situation, the lock was not working and that I would like to change rooms immediately. I was told that this was not possible as because it was after midnight "Reception was shut".. I thought I may have been speaking to an off site security guard who may not have access to reception. He said not to worry as they'll "probably leave you alone".. I reluctantly accepted that answer as it was nearly 1am, and they were outside my door, so I wasn't going out there. The seedy guest and his friend were outside my door until 1:30am. My heart was racing and I didn't get to sleep until well after 2am. The next morning I went down to reception and told the female receptionist about the previous nights ordeal. She was horrified and said that I should've changed rooms. I said that I rang the night security number and was told that this wasn't possible. She said "What? Who told you that? We have a key in a safe outside reception, just in case someone needs to change rooms during the night" .... I was livid!!! She said that she was terribly sorry and that she would get the owner to call me. I received a phone call from the owner that morning... turns out it was the same guy who I spoke to on the security number at midnight!!! He was very apologetic in the morning about what I went through, BUT DID NOT HELP ME WHEN I WAS IN NEED!!!! He said that he thought it was a "full house", this sounded like a weak excuse, he is the owner and should know exactly what is happening in his business. Not acceptable. He said that he would call the seedy guest's boss to let him know what had happened, and he also offered me a free breakfast and upgrade for the next time I stay...!!! What a joke. I WILL NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN, AS I DO NOT HAVE FAITH THAT THEY WILL LOOK AFTER ME, OR THEIR OTHER GUESTS IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG. How this whole situation was handled was absolutely appalling. The hotel can not control what people will do, but they can control how they deal with it.

Briefly met the owner (Dale, if I recall right), very amicable. Only downsides were the shower head is at about 6' (1.8 meters) and I am 6'4" (1.93m). Additionally there were a lot of wires (phone, lights, etc) but were we not traveling with an 11 month old we probably would not have noticed. Very much enjoyed our stay, will likely stay here again should we be back in town.
