At the point and time that I am writing this, I neither gain nor lose anything from this review. It is solely for the purpose of informing others of my experiences.
I was a resident of Quail Creek apartments for 18 months and moved out November of 2015. I had quite a few issues during the time I was a resident of the apartment complex. These spanned from mild nuisances to, what I believe, life threatening. The response of management during these events was--to say the least--disconcerting.
The first issue that I had with the apartment occurred within the first 2 or 3 months after moving in. My upstairs neighbor had an issue with a backed up toilet that resulted in the flooding of her bathroom and bedroom that resulted in the flooding of my downstairs unit, completely ruining my bed, ceiling, and a few electronics. I am completely aware that issues such as the one mentioned above are not the responsibility of the apartment complex to fix--as long as they aren't responsible due to negligence. The issue with the apartment management arose when I spoke to the neighbors and was made aware that they had contacted the office about the situation multiple times and had told them that they were unable to discontinue water flow to the toilet due to a rusted key being on the toilet's water valve. The office decided to treat the situation as a non-emergency and took their time addressing the situation (something that was confirmed by their maintenance man at the time.) Upon requesting financial compensation to deal with the damages, the office manager decided that the appropriate response was to scream at me at told me "not to be coming into [her] office, and telling [her] how to do her job." We were able to recover damages for the items mentioned directly from our neighbors, but were informed by management that if they refused and we tried to sue them for damages, she'd evict both us and our neighbors.
The second major issue that I experienced at Quail Creek occurred during the winter months of 2015. On the night of the largest snow fall Amarillo experienced that year, the dead bolt lock in the door to the apartment complex broke and in essence had my roommate and myself locked. Having residents locked within their apartments in itself is a major safety issue that should have been addressed, but on top of that were the facts that we had a fire burning in the apartment, had school to attend to early the next morning, and that one of the residents of the apartment had an injured leg and therefore practically had no safe way of evacuating the building upon emergency. Upon contacting the emergency number I was once again addressed by the manager in a very aggressive manner "I'm not having maintenance come out to let you out of your apartment", and was told that making it to my attendance mandatory classes was my own problem and that if I really wanted to I could "climb out a window." (We found out later that year during spring that all of the windows had been sloppily painted shut the previous summer and they took about 15 minutes of prying and using a paint scraper to separate before they could actually be opened.)
The final major issue ended up being the final straw, and is the main reason I decided to move apartment complexes. After having returned from a trip outside of the city I came home to a kitchen sink that was backing up due to a backup in one of our neighbors' apartments. It was a Sunday night so I decided to wait until Monday morning to go talk to Cindy (manager) about it. She sent maintenance out to try and snake it but they were unable to. By the time the maintenance man and his superior returned the next day, the sink was almost completely full of thick, greasy, malodorous black fluid. They attempted to use a larger snake to no avail. They then proceeded to cut a hole in the sheet rock of the hallways closet and drill a hole into the PVC pipe, something that is illegal per city ordinance since they didn't have the appropriate permits. They still were not able to fix the problem through this hole though so they decided to go into the guest bathroom, and once they were working in there they took the pipes apart and spilled thick, malodorous black water all over the floor and wooden board of the cabinet. For those that don't know, black water is just a level above sewer water. It is water that has been stagnant in the pipes that urine, feces, and basically all dirty used water runs through. Not only did they spill black water all over the bathroom, but they tracked it all through the hallway and spilled it out into the lawn with complete disregard for the health issues this could lead to.
