I think they faked computer failure when I was trying to pay. They kept declining all my cards and tried to make me sign up for their credit card to "make the process go faster" After that the guy complained about being woken up by a chainsaw. Read the room, does the customer want to hear it? No, especially when they've been there for 3 hours, can't use their cards to pay and has to pull hundreds in CASH just to pay for service because they don't want another credit card. I'm going elsewhere for future NYS inspections and repairs. read more

The crew are not what you'd call master diagnosticians--but the old guy who cashes me out is super friendly and they always find coupons to save me extra cash. I feel badly because it seems someone always calls in sick, and last year a guy had third degree burns all over his body because of an exhaust fix mishap. I purchased my tires at Pep Boys. 2 weeks later, I had a flat and took it there for a new tire and did get a little discount. 1 month later my tire check light came on so I stopped there to see if they could possibly check my tire pressure. I was told they were too busy and I would have to make an appointment. So, I went to Monroe near my home, who was also very busy. However, they took the 2 minutes to check my tires and administer some air and told me to come back later if the light came back on and they would squeeze me in somehow. HJmm, the place where I purchased the tires couldn't take the 2 minutes to check my air pressure. Guess who I won't be doing business with. read more

Awful services. Few days ago I toke my car for a 60k basic regular full service and they told me that my car had an engine display on upon giving me the car back after they did the service. They claimed it was already on, which was a lie. So no big deal I said I will check with Toyota since PepBoys give me the car back. Paid $170 for the service and started to drive home. Half mile in every warning lights on my car started to flashing on and my car basically wouldn't go above 20 miles extremely dangerous. I pullover at the Toyota because it wasn't safe to drive back to pepboys and left my car at Toyota for a diagnosis. Turned out that someone st PepBoys somehow left cables unplugged causing this. Cost me another $150 just to have that fixed at Toyota. Next day I went back to PepBoys with the Toyota description of what happened and their employees treated me like I was crazy and kept saying that they didn't touch anything and my car was already like that even though my car was perfectly fine driving in. They refused to reenburse me. I will never take my car there again and I would give it a zero if I could. I am extremely disappointed and angry because it could caused me to have an accident by allowing me to get in the road like that. I do not recommend that place read more

I wish that I had read the previous posts on Yelp before trying to have tired changed. The elderly man behind the customer service desk was beyond rude. The phone rang several times while waiting in line, the elderly man responded that he never answers the phones. He cut off a customer while they were trying to provide information on an appointment. He complained they were understaffed and not to expect their car to be completed until late afternoon despite a 10:30 appointment. Pep Boys is a joke....They were having a buy two get two tires free deal. I tried to get the deal through my local PepBoys. The Liverpool, ny Route 57 store. I spoke to John the manager. He said they only have two tires and that New Hartford has 4. I asked if he could have two shipped. He said he couldn't because their parts department closed. So I ordered the 4 in New Hartford. Set up my appointment for the Friday of that week. I drove out there (which is a little over an hour from my house). I go in and tell the guy at the counter that I have an appointment.He looks it up and says I don't think we have the tires. I said I ordered them for today. He said he'll go look. He came back and said we only have two. I said I ordered 4 and reserved them for today. He said welp I don't know what to tell you we don't have them. I said you realize I just drove over an hour to get here. He said I don't know what to tell you. I said what does reserving the tires mean. He could give two craps. I remembered that the manager from Liverpool said he had two. I called him and they still had them. I said I'll buy these two and come there to buy the two from you and have them installed. He said nope you can't do that. You have to deal with them. I said aren't you all Pep Boys. He said nope you have to have them order more and deal with them. I said I live by your store in Liverpool. I'm not driving back out here again. He said well if you want the deal. I said I already drove out here today to get the tires I ordered. He said that's the way it is....Very rude, condescending and not at all customer focused. So I left the store and called their corporate office number. Told them what happened and they said someone would call me back. 3 weeks later no call.I called corporate again and this time someone called me from the New Hartford store. The manager Pat. I told him the story...I told Pat how Ed at the counter was so rude and not caring about customer service..For some reason Pat shared that he had a tire guy he wants to throw through the window..I guess he wanted to get it off his chest. So, if you know the tire guy at the New Hartford store...please share with him.How his manager feels. Don't know if Pat would act on his feelings. The way he handled this situation...He could go hands on. I told Pat that while I was at the store and realizing what John said about the two tire he had and NEW Hartford had. I would buy the two from them and go to Liverpool and buy the two and have them put on. I said it seemed like and easy resolution to this problem....but John (manager in Liverpool) said no. Again Pat shared that John thinks he knows it all and even thinks he's Pats boss...I guess Pat had a lot on his chest he wanted to get off. So Pat said he'd look at the next day. The next day Pat says I'm looking at a Goodyear Maxlife tires. I said that will work. Let me know....almost 2 weeks go by no response from Pat. I texted him on a Tuesday asking what going on. He said he was sick and would be in the store on Thursday. Thursday comes I hear nothing...nothing Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I called his number...it picked up and quickly hung up twice and the third time...He was clicking something into the phone. So I called their corporate office again. So that where I'm at. No resolution to an easy problem No one from corporate called me Here are the players Pat the manager in New Hartford.....again if you know the tire guy let him know how Pat feels....just so he's on guard...in case Pat acts on his feelings. Ed at the front desk in New Hartford...he looks like he's retired and is just doing this to make ends meet....doesn't really care John the manager in Liverpool...who started me on this journey to New Hartford...minus him saying that New Hartford had the tires...I would've never looked in New Hartford for tires....John does seem like an arrogant person...very condescending in his conversation with me. read more

I actually downloaded the Yelp app to say how horrific the New Hartford PepBoys service was. Showed up on time for my tire change actually brought the tires ( Just a mountain balance since I have 2 sets of tires) there is no need to remove them from the vehicle. Older guy at desk told it would be 2 to 3 hours for that... I asked if I was waiting since I had an appointment it would always be that long and the guy simply replied "you and other lot other people have 2:30 appointments buddy!" I dropped off my 2017 Honda Civic 1.5L DOHC, on 08/18/2021 at your New Hartford, NY location for a standard oil change. The oil change was performed and the vehicle was picked up the following day 08/19/2021. Within 10 miles of driving the vehicle I noticed an odor of burning plastic and/or oil from the air vents in the vehicle. I turned on the vents to discover white smoke coming from the cabin A/C in the vehicle. The vehicle was immediately pulled over, parked, and shut off. Upon opening the engine bay, I discovered the engine covered in loose oil all over the engine cover, alternator, and various other mechanical components I am not fully familiar with. I called the location where the service was performed and the gentleman was very accommodating with providing a free tow and inspection of the vehicle to ensure there were no defects with the service performed. The tow truck arrived, loaded the vehicle (with it still smoking) and delivered it back to the New Hartford, NY location. I received a call 08/20/2021 from Christian the service manager informing me they believe the smoke and odor was caused by excessive oil being spilled onto the engine. He informed me this would be cleaned up, and the car would be road ready again. I picked up my vehicle the same day, 08/20/2021, and drove it roughly a half mile down the road down commercial drive when I again noticed a burning oil/plastic smell. I immediately pulled over into the Sangertown Square parking lot on commercial drive and opened the engine bay to discover the engine smoking again. Along with the engine smoking, I also again discovered oil covering the engine bay and pools of it forming behind the engine. I immediately called the location which informed me I should return the vehicle to have it reinspected. Upon getting back into the vehicle all the dashboard lights had illuminated. I was receiving dashboard lights for "12V Battery System, Vehicle Stability Assist, Brake System, Electronic Parking Brake", and a few others I am not familiar with. Upon driving back to the location, my vehicle was losing power, had difficulty steering (power steering) and the brake pedal was falling to the floor. Thankfully, I was able to complete the half mile drive back to the location as instructed where my vehicle was driven back into the shop by an employee. The service manager (Christian) was very accommodating about the experience, and I appreciate how willing your staff was to accommodate the situation and immediately work towards correcting the situation. They are sending my vehicle to a Honda dealership to have the repairs performed at no charge to me. My car is currently at the Honda Dealership awaiting for genuine Honda parts and the installation of said parts. I am however being told the repair could take 2-3 weeks and corporate is unwilling to offer me a rental car. I am at a loss at the fact after damaging a customers vehicle, and having the repair take 2-3 weeks that a rental car is not being offered to cover the loss of transportation. I have taken numerous photos and videos of the damage caused to my vehicle, unfortunately they cannot be uploaded to Yelp. I would like someone from corporate to personally contact me and explain to me why you are not willing to take care of your customers. It is completely unreasonable as to why a rental vehicle cannot be provided after my vehicle was damaged by this repair shop. read more

Had an appointment to replace 2 head lamp bulbs. I have replaced my own bulbs in the past. I have to remove a couple of screws and reach up through the wheel well to get tongue bulbs. Cold and snowy outside, I don't have a garage, so I made the appointment at Pep Boys. Upon arrival I was told the cost would be about $250 dollars plus the cost of the bulbs which was $60. I canceled my appointment... went across the road to Auto Zone , purchased the same bulbs for $45 ... took them home and had them both installed is less than 15 minutes. I feel sorry for the people who have no choice and have to allow them selves to be price gouged by the Pep Boys Gang. Extremely over priced and constantly trying to upsell unneeded repairs. So today I ventured out just to get a bulb for my headlight which blew . I stopped @ Auto Zone got what I needed even got tools from the female who had tools I her car. All was well till I realized the connector was fried. I got a new one and they explained to me what needed to be done. I'm a noob so it wasn't happening. So across the street is Pepboyz which I've heard about, took a chance. Anthony who I met first went "ABOVE & BEYOND" for me. He matched the universal connector and tested them out but he didn't feel comfortable how tight they were after a few mins of testing, he called over Mike. Mike then went to the next level by opening the package of their product, pulled a rubber piece out. The light still wouldn't fit correctly, Mike then cut a piece of the rubber and it fit perfectly. I asked how much it would cost to get installed along with the wire splicing. They were unsure due to the labor cost. Mike ask was my car outside; it was and Anthony came out and detached my light, spliced the wire for me and tested it 2x before reconnecting. These two gentleman understand the meaning of CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! My started off rocky, Anthony and Mike made it smoother...Thanks guys Whoever is the Manager above these two please take notice to valuable employees. Hats off to the Pep Boys New Hartford crew, they really took care of things for me today. My fuel door would not open, and they knew that I did not have enough gas in my tank to return home (4 1/2 hour trip back to NH). They were busy, it was Sunday and they certainly could've told me to come back tomorrow or later in the afternoon. But they got to it right away, got the door open within maybe 15 minutes. And no charge either! I would have had to shell out money for a hotel as the dealership was closed given that it was Sunday. Excellent customer service by Scott, Andrew, and Amie. read more

Very good. I had a flat, and after I changed the tire to the spare I stopped at pep boys and the gentleman named Anthony stated he could not get it in until late afternoon. I was an opening manager down the street for a local restaurant and I knew I wasn't going to be able to bring it back and wait. I asked him if it was off the car if I could just leave it and they could fit it in not only did they fit it in they called me within an hour and a half and let me know that my tire was perfectly fine everything was fixed and it was safe to drive on top of that not a single penny was charged to me even after I asked for it to be charged since they spent time on my car while they were visiting with other customers and doing their jobs for safety sake love these boys thank you read more

I have not been to Pep Boys in 5 years. I went because I was getting my oil changed near by. They had am air filter I needed for my RV. Scott, an employee of Pep Boys, told me OVER the phone to come in because they had it. I said I was clueless about how to install my air filter. I just bought the RV and didn't know where to begin because I'm a chimp when it comes to fixing anything. He just told me to come in and we would figure something out. So I did. He was nice as pie. He actually went outside and replaced it for me. And showed me another filter that was filthy. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE from SCOTT. Ask for him and all will be well. :) read more

Visiting from Schenectady I came to Utica for the day Father's Day 2021 to have dinner with my parents. My tire showed low air pressure more than half way to Utica. I refilled it at a Thruway rest area. When I arrived in Utica it was still fine but by the time we left for dinner, the low pressure light came on again. We drove to the last place open on a Sunday (Pep Boys in New Hartford). It was just turning 5:00pm and they wouldn't help me other than to try to sell me a can of Fix-a-Flat. Even though the store was still open for another hour, they were finishing up their work in the garage and the man behind the counter in the service area dismissed us outright. I went and put air in at a nearby place and drove my hungry parents to the restaurant. I thought it'd be low and I'd have to stop again on the way to my parents' house after dinner, spend the night, and have it towed from my parents' house to some repair place in the morning. But instead I came out of the restaurant to find a completely flat tire. The compressor in my trunk was useless, and so was a can of Fix-a-Flat my brother-in-law brought out to us. We had to get a ride from another family member and I had to get a tow truck first thing in the morning. Now, I won't get into the long annoying story about how it took a tow truck from my insurance carrier's emergency road service several hours to to tell me it'll be another hour wait on top of the original 90 minutes they said it'd take to get there, so I canceled them and used AAA instead. I finally got my poor car to Mavis at 2020 Genesee Street by early afternoon. Frustrated and still wearing the clothes I wore yesterday (I didn't pack for what should've been a day trip), I told the guys at Mavis my story. Even though they had 6 tire appointments ahead of mine, they said they'd do their best. Having wrecked the tire with that useless repair foam, I assumed the ordeal would lead to at least $300 on my emergency credit card and possibly another night sleeping in my clothes. But instead, I got a call from Mavis 30 minutes before close and they told me they were able to clean out the foam, they successfully plugged the tire, and it'd cost only $19.95. I'm so grateful for the kindness, friendliness & honest hard work of the Mavis on 2020 Genesee Street in Utica! You guys are my heroes!!! Pep Boys could've easily been the heroes 24 hours sooner, but they chose to leave me and my parents stranded instead. I'll never step foot on a Pep Boys lot again as long as I live. Mavis in Utica is 100% the best automotive customer service I've ever experienced. I fully endorse Mavis and it's staff of hard working professionals. Pep Boys can take a lesson or two on empathy & professionalism from Mavis, but I doubt they'd take the time. read more

I needed a new car battery as mine was over 5 years old, and with the cold weather coming, I didn't want to risk it dying on me suddenly. I researched batteries online and found that Pep Boys had the best warranty for a battery that fit my car in my area, at a reasonable price. I placed the order online and made an appt. It took about 25 mins for them to install the new battery. The mechanic said it would have been a 3 hr wait if I had didn't have an appt so I was glad I did. read more

If you need anything serious done to your car- AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. I was lied to twice at this location. Once, had a tire replaced and wanted them to check alignment. Was told alignment was fine (come to find out later this is NOT the case). Second time I had them check out a noise my car was making that was impacting my steering as well. After an eternity of waiting they replaced the ball joint and told me everything should be fine. It wasn't! After blowing a second tire in three months I went to a different mechanic. Was told not only that my alignment was totally off, but my car was actually UNSAFE to drive and that it was damaged FURTHER when Pep Boys replaced the ball joint. Pep Boys should have definitely seen the safety issues prior to this, as I was told they were long-standing. Come to find out they took a blowtorch to the bottom of my car and damaged a spindle knuckle in the process. $380 to replace that! The employees at this Pep Boys seemed more concerned with complaining about being at work and goofing around up front than providing good, SAFE, ETHICAL service. I could have been hurt or worse based on their feedback and diagnosis. I repeat- DO NOT GO HERE. It's not worth it!!! read more
