Came in for a second opinion diagnostic, my car had been intermittently not starting. (I had been here before on July 4th and they saved my life and helped get my family on the road quick so we didn't miss family festivities out of town) Turned out I needed my alternator replaced on top of a new battery. Pricing was insanely competitive, and Chris even worked his magic to knock some extra off, because having your alternator go out on a Wednesday isn't fun for anyone's bank account in this economy. They pushed to get my car done quickly so I could pick my son up on time from school- and even had a mechanic pause his work to drive me up the road to my house so I could eat and get our second vehicle in case they ran over with the repair. These men never once made me feel like a burden and helped me with a smile, explained pricing to me in a way that felt educational, every employee was kind and generous in going above and beyond to have my car repaired and me as a customer and person taken care of. In addition, the person I talked to on the phone (sounded like some kind of answering service) appeared to be an Asian female with an accent so thick I could barely understand her and had to constantly have her repeat what she just said... often 3 or more! On a super blustery Saturday I planned and booked an Appmt. with the Athens Pep Boys. Then it occurred to me that Madison was not too far away, so I checked their schedule and booked with them. My first synthetic oil change and a tire rotation/balance. Again, I just don't enjoy the TV shows selected (not a ding against them), and I brought a folding chair. So I sat outside in my folding chair catching up on some reading. Due to being layered up because the weather was super chilly and windy - I had to laugh, I really looked homeless. If I put out a jar asking for money, I guarantee you I would have had at least my oil change paid for! :D They offered a coupon for the oil change and granted it, nice touch. The last two days have been enough to absolutely break me from Pep Boys. Went by the south Parkway location on Thursday for an alignment and I was told it would not be a problem but that they couldn't do it that day, which was fine. He suggested that I might want to try the Madison location on Friday or I could come in on Saturday. Around lunch time I made an online appointment for Friday at 5:30 in Madison and received a text and an email confirmation confirming my appointment. On arrival I was that they could not honor that appointment and that I'd have to leave the car until the next day if I wanted a forty-five minute service performed, even though my appointment was an hour and a half before closing and I was fifteen minutes early. The guy behind the counter acted as if I had done something untoward by scheduling an online appointment SIX HOURS IN ADVANCE, when the website showed plenty of appointments available. Professionals would be proactively monitoring their schedule and reaching out to customers and offering solutions if there were some problem honoring an appointment as opposed to reacting as the problems compound and angering customers in the process. Or someone could go online and block portions of the schedule in order to catch up or service Drive ups. I left Madison QUITE displeased but it would get far worse on Saturday but that's for another review.........I'll be hard pressed to do business with Pep Boys in the future and I'll be sure to share my story at every opportunity. read more

Check engine light had come on and had a code read on my car for a coil misfire. Took it to this location and also asked for them to check about resurfacing my rotors. They called me later that day and told me nothing seemed to be wrong with my engine, but that they couldn't resurface my rotors, and that my brake pads AND rotors needed to be changed. They tried telling me that it was highly needed for all of those things to be changed and they quoted me at $1700 because "the cost of metal had increased". I told them I would just opt to come pick up my car without repairs. Over a month later and my car breaks down. I have to get it towed and turns out I needed a new starter in my car (after I was told nothing was wrong with it). Took my car somewhere else to get the brakes looked at, and turns out my same brake pads look like new and rotors also don't need to be replaced (it's amazing how after a month more of driving, my brakes magically repair themselves to not need new ones LOL). On top of that, the place I took it to said they could replace brake pads and rotors for $250, not $1700 like Pep Boys insisted it was. This location tried to rip me off and I have a feeling it was because I was a female that they thought didn't know anything. I do not appreciate them trying to trick me into paying for repairs that were not needed and also for not looking into what was wrong with my car. I will not be back to this location again!! read more

Update: Decided to try them out again today to fix a flat, when we got there we were talking and they asked us if we wanted to do an oil change/tire rotation since it needed it so we told them that was fine. They called us to come pick up the car and when we get ready to leave the car starts beeping that there is low tire pressure. The tire was never fixed!!! The only thing pep boys did was an oil change and nothing else. When we walked back in to ask about it they came up with every excuse in the book as to why it wasn't done and finally ended it with "there is a nail too close to the wall". We knew for a fact there was a screw in the tire on the tread and when we asked them to show us the nail funny enough they couldn't find it. They tried to screw us once again by not doing what we paid them for and hoping we wouldn't notice. We didn't leave until we watched them fix it and then still had to remind the mechanic working that it needed a tire rotation and he said no one told him that so even after we got onto them about everything that wasn't done they still didn't tell the mechanic everything. To top it all off while we were driving home the tire pressure light came on again and when we checked the tire pressure at home the mechanic had filled the tires to 50 PSI!! That's dangerous and could have ended badly for us! I will never again come back here and I will warn everyone! Bunch of crooks who don't care about you and just trying to take your money!!! DO NOT GO HERE. UNETHICAL CROOKED SCAM. Pep Boys should be ashamed of yourself. I drop off my car because my AC isn't blowing cold. They kept my car 9 days & I paid $605 to fix my AC. I made sure to ask about a warranty. The manager claimed they guarantee their work for 1 year. As I drove it home, I noticed the air wasn't cold. I was in disbelief. No way they'd keep my car 9 days, charge me $605 & return it to me in the exact same condition. I bring it back to Pep Boys. They keep it 2 more days....and call me with a NEW estimate of $3900 to ACTUALLY fix my AC. That's the cost of a used Honda. No thanks. I beg them to refund my $605. They say, "no. It's not their fault. The AC work was bigger than they originally found." If they had simply told me originally, the work would cost $4500....then I'd have come & got my car back..and Put my money towards a new car perhaps?! But no. They tricked me into paying for a lower cost estimate. I sink $600 into it. And then they say, oh we need another $3900?? I'm reporting this place to the Better Business Bureau & to my bank for fraud. I also noticed they charged my $79 for an oil change when they quoted me 29.99. Find ANY other place to take your car that will deal with you honestly, ethically & fairly. I spent $605 & have nothing to show for it. read more

I went in on a Saturday morning, with an appointment, to have my brakes worked on. I was pleased by the attention they gave my Jeep, and glad when I was told it was only the rear brakes. I'd give negative stars if possible. I stopped using them a couple years ago when the put parts on my vehicle I specifically said not to. They tried to sale me cheap parts and I paid for and requested high quality top tier parts for a suspension repair. After I picked up my vehicle they had put the cheap parts on but charged me for the good ones. I actually questioned the correct parts when I checked out and the assured me they used the good parts: I got home and looked... low and behold the cheap parts house specials were installed. I was leaving for vacation the following morning so I could not get it corrected... they still gave me the run around.. fast forward 2 years. Under new management I decided to give them a shot for a vehicle inspection. Made and appointment with the manager. Showed up for appt and the girl up front said they could not do the inspection. Nothing had changed. Pep Boys had lost a customer for good. Sorry isn't even the word to describe how horrible they are. read more

I worked at Pep Boys for a few years recently and while I ended my employment based on a few things I didn't agree with, this store in Madison is fantastic. There are only two stores I trust in this area and this being the first because of Jeremy, the store manager. He knows how to treat people and has built a great team. I took my 2006 Acura in to have the transmission checked out. They quoted me a price of ~$95.00 to check it out. I said that was fine. 20 min later they called me to counter and told me that there was many error codes in system. And that was the cause of the problems with my transmission. I asked if they even looked at the transmission or even inspected the transmission fluid. They said they didn't need to that the error code device gave them all the info they needed. So needless to say Pep Boys charged me with tax almost $100 to plug in a device that Autozone or other parts stores will do for free. And then wouldn't give me the error codes that I could take to another mechanic. I will NEVER return to Pep Boys for anything again. read more

I've come to know the staff here over the past 2 years now and they are rock stars. Sometimes they are too busy at this location, but I feel good about going here and as long as they have the parts your visit is usually very fast. They have not closed during the year like some places so kudos to them. Good for tires or oil changes and even complicated mechanical issues as well. Trust them they'll get you back on the road soon and usually much cheaper than other places. read more

I stopped by after being told that it would be an hour wait to have a tire mounted, so when I arrived ten min later, I was told it would be a four-hour wait. I was asked if I wanted to make an appointment so I made an appointment for noon and at 1:00 I am still waiting in the waiting room and my truck is still parked where I parked it with nothing done to it. I would expect if you have an appointment and waiting for your vehicle they would make some attempt to accommodate you and get you out the door. I just got my cars struts and tires here. Their service is consistently top notch, but today was even better. Brian did everything he could to get the work done and help me get all the coupons applicable. I will be laid off from my job next week and I needed the work done while saving as much as possible. When my car was ready they were willing to come pick me up because my ride ended up taking her brother to the hospital with appendicitis . Although the Pep Boys organization does a fair job, they cheat the customer with the addition of a "shop charge", added when they present the bill. There is no mention of this charge prior to receiving the bill. Be aware that the price that they quote does not include up to $35 for misc common items used for the service ( which should be included in the basic cost of the service). It actually amounts to an unannounced surcharge to your bill. read more

Unfortunately, the tires only lasted about a year (I did drive across country but still). Called from out of state since the warranty was still in effect. They took the time to figure out how to handle the situation even though there was no location near me. What would you do to find an auto repair shop that did great work, matched competitors pricest, finished on time and everyone treated you with respect. Sound impossible? Go to Pep Boys on Madison BLVD/Wall Trianna. Cody runs the admin shop and Shannon is the general manager. I recently had a fairly large project done at Pep Boys. very shortly after they returned car to me, I noticed some pretty serious issues had arisen that weren't there before. I brought the car back and explained what what happening. Within 3 hours, Cody called me on my cell and explained that while putting the car together from the original repair, certain pieces may have been put on incorrectly or not to correct specifications. Because of this oversight there was some additional damage that had been done to the car. I was listening half happy that they could fix it and scared to death what it was going to cost me. Cody assured me that the extra damage was a direct result of their oversight and they would be responsible for the repairs. Within two days, Pep Boys finished my car, no cost to me, and the car is running sooooo much better than I could have imagined. I'm 48, I've had a few of cars around the 10 year old mark, and I've had to take them many places to get fixed. Pep Boys in Madison has won my loyalty and they should have yours too. I've told all my coworkers about my experience and I believe that some of them will definitely be visiting the shop If senior management sees these reviews, they need to recognize the team they have at the Madison store. read more

Last weekend, I had an appointment for tire rotation and alignment. After waiting for 45 minutes, the guy told me that they could not rotate my tires because the wear on the front was SO much worse than that on the rear tires...it would not be safe. I would need new tires on the front soon and we could rotate them then. They also told me that I did not need an alignment - which I knew that I did. (Add all of this to the fact that a month ago I had an appt for an oil change...was the "next one up". An hour later my car has still not been taken to a bay. Fed me a line about so sorry, I would be the next one up. 30 minutes later, still nothing. Got my keys and went to Express Oil down the street, and was done in 10 minutes). So fast forward to today - went to the new Tire Discounters on Wall Triana (in front of Kroger). They rotated my tires without issue and performed an alignment. Gave me a discount out of the blue and treated me with respect. My car drives beautifully and I am grateful to finally have the work done that I needed. I started taking my car to the shop on Ivory Way in Madison, Alabama 10 years ago when I first bought my Altima...back when it was still Big Ten Tires. Maybe the place was more trustworthy back then? I trusted the mechanics there not to take advantage of me. They'd always been so nice and so great about patching a tire really quick for free since I'm a regular customer...I felt I owed them some loyalty. Every year when I would get my Income Tax return, I would take my car to them and get tires and/or whatever else they told me my car needed at the time (a belt, struts, a radiator flush, etc. etc). This year (2018) when I received my refund, I hopped in my same little car...all blissed up with ignorance thinking I had such a good place to go...and drove over to Pep Boys to get the catalytic converter replaced (something they had told me I needed to do the previous year, but after spending $2200 on other things, I was out of money and had to wait) along with an oil change. They told me my car was no longer rattling and that the rattle I had been concerned about was a result of being low on oil because my car was blowing oil from several leaks. I thought that was strange because I'd never seen any drips of oil in my driveway. When I left that afternoon, the AC (which was working fine the day before) was no longer working. I called them back and they graciously agreed to look at it to make sure it wasn't something they'd done. When I did take it back to them, they called me back with a quote of $1395 to replace the AC compressor. I told them I couldn't afford that and got my car back. Another mechanic - a long time FRIEND of mine - agreed to put the compressor on for me if I ordered one, so I ordered the compressor kit for $220 and he had it working like a ice-cold dream in just a little while. He also replaced one of the CV axles (an $80 part that Pep Boys quoted for $190 plus $150 or so for labor) in about 40 minutes. This in itself is not my complaint. My complaint is that after already being suspicious about my AC failure, my mechanic friend called me to ask who had been working on my car because there were loose bolts, missing bolts, motor mounts loose, broken brackets never replaced after being damaged, a missing panel, etc. He also said that I did not have any oil leaks...after 6 weeks, my car was full of nice, clean oil...that all of the grease I had seen (that I had taken as evidence of oil blowing out like they'd said) had come from the broken boot on that CV axle. (Which would explain why my car actually WAS still rattling when I picked it up).He also told me that the other CV axle was fine and didn't need to be replaced (after Pep Boys had told me it did). He DID say that everything else looked fine, though. He tightened everything back up (no more rattling for REAL now) and is going to get the panel I'm missing from a junk yard. I will NEVER visit Pep Boys again. NEVER. After 10 years of loyalty to them, they have lost every ounce of trust I'd given them. You CAN be deceived if you don't know enough about auto mechanics...even us chicks that know how to change filters and tires and radiators and throttle cables and relay switches, etc. read more

I've been to several places such as this one and this Pepboy tire & service center had one of the best staffs I've ever had the pleasure to meet. I'm from TN visiting family in Huntsville and I had an emergency with my car. They promptly got my car back and unfortunately I had, to me, a serious issue with my car making it inoperable. They were kind enough to let me keep my car there so it can be towed back to middle TN to my home mechanic. This is nothing against the staff,I just have one mechanic that works on all my vehicles. Mr. Cody at the front desk was extraordinarily polite and very professional and this goes to the entire staff at this Pepboy tire and service center. I thank y'all for everything.
