Pep Boys is a money sucker for any services beyond a basic oil change. On the upside they do good work here backed by guarantee, and occasionally I'll receive mail or text coupon deals. Plus the staff are always friendly and give helpful explanations. I used this Pep Boys location most recently for new spark plugs on my 2012 intermediate sedan, and it cost me ~$350 after a 10% coupon was applied - which still seems high considering that they performed no other services in that price (it was not a full tune up) and couldn't give me the full tune up as requested due to lack of filter parts on hand. Secondly I received a quote for four new tires; they offered me Cooper brand at $900-ish. I went to Sam's Club and bought four Goodyear tires for under $550. Renovations are in progress for a new standalone auto parts store that will have no affiliation with Pep Boys. read more

I ordered tires from Tire Rack, I chose Pep Boys in Edison to mount and balance the tires because they had the best price. This was in June of this year. I also asked for the lifetime alignment, because I was getting 4 tires mounted and balanced. They called me later to tell me that the alignment couldn't be done because of ripped tie rod boots. What? In all my life, I never heard a more ridiculous story! (I included pictures of my intact tie rod end boots) I told them to just do the tires. When I picked up the vehicle, I was handed an estimate for brakes and rotors all the way around, struts, and shocks, plus wipers, air filter, and cabin air filter. What? All of these items were replaced within the last year! The kicker is that the mechanic said my serpentine belt was good. It has massive cracks in it! To add insult to injury, my steering wheel shook violently between 60 to 70 MPH. I took my vehicle to another shop, they told me that the mechanic added a bunch of unnecessary extra wheel weights, and all 4 tires were severely out of balance! Please, save yourself some grief and avoid this rip off shop like the plague! FYI, I sent a long detailed letter with photos to Pep Boys customer service, they received the letter on 7/1 As of this date, 9/27, I haven't heard anything back from them! They truly don't care that their mechanics rip people off, they promote it! BTW, if I could give zero stars or even negative 5 stars I would! read more

I would give negative but there's no option so this is my second time going here and twice was shaking my head the first time for my range rover with coolant leak pep boy quoted 6k. Complete cooling system replacement. After going to a real mechanic all it need was a $160 part. Second time VW front end qoute $3500 comple front end replacement which included oil pan for large oil leak. Once again. Took to real mechanic all it needed was a control arm car wasnt leak any oil. So this is two time two different cars and ridiculous quotes. Its either this location is robbing people are they need better mechanics. Furthermore, both Matthew and Tracy lied to Apsal Services, claiming that the shock absorber and control arm needed to be replaced. When we requested a written recommendation, they refused to provide one. Later, they changed their story, claiming there was no technician available to confirm these issues and that we needed to bring the vehicle back on Monday. This deceitful and unethical behavior is unacceptable. I am demanding an immediate and thorough investigation into the conduct of both Matthew and Tracy. Disciplinary action must be taken to prevent such behavior in the future. This situation needs to be addressed at the corporate level to ensure that other customers do not suffer the same unprofessional, deceitful, and disrespectful treatment. I had posted how great Pep Boys were until I had to bring my car back and I feel like I have been duped Eddie didn't even know how to work the computer and was More concerned about the giving stars or saying something on yelp, then helping me out on my situation. REMON said that I needed a new battery that my car didn't start and they had to jump it which I know my battery was fine but he said otherwise then proceeds to say that my car is burning oil and I need an oil change, but didn't see. I just received an oil change two months prior at Pep Boys as soon as I said that His story changed there are more salesman at this experience than anything that are care. Edison New Jersey pep boys on old post road. Brought our car in for a new tire and technician broke our ignition. They drove the car in to the garage with no issues. The technician jammed the key in and screw up our ignition so key wouldnt turn. My wife even came down with another key and that didnt work. The manager on duty said nothing and offered no help. He just wondered around staring at the ceiling. We had to have our car towed to the ford dealer for a new ignition. The ford dealer said the inside of the ignition was all twisted and bent. The new ignition and install cost us over $500. I reached out to pep boys corporate and the store manger called me after I told corporate I only wanted to talk to the regional or district manager. After moving back to New Jersey started using Pep Boys on old Post Road over eight years ago. At the beginning I was happy with the maintenance and the pricing estimates that they gave us in the past. The price gouging management has gotten worse in the last few years. I bought a my vehicle in for full brake inspection And was told I need a full brake and rotor replacement on all four. They gave me an estimate just under $1300 and when I told them that I need to schedule it on the next opening I was told I could not drive my car. I need it towed. They got really rude when I told him I could not do the repair the same day and they would have to report it and log it as a safety issue what ever that meant. I used to do maintenance in my younger years on all my vehicles to include tuneups, brake work, etc. I so when I got the estimate, I decided to get a second opinion after they gave attitude. Maybe they thought as a senior citizen I would just pay the price quoted me, I am on a fixed income and made it easy for me go someplace else. After talking to a few friends, they referred me to STS in Metuchen, the next day, I brought my car in for a full brake inspection, and they not only explained what repairs are required, but also showed me and answered every question I had about my vehicle. ((same information Pep Boys gave me minus the attitude)) Best part was the estimate they gave me which was well under $1000!!! Goodbye Pep Boys STS in Metuchen will get business now! read more

Mediocre Mechanics, Poor Customer Service I had been to Pep Boys several times for tires, oil, changes, and routine maintenance. They were generally good enough-ish. They made mistakes but always fixed them in the end, until recently. My Air Conditioner wasn't working. They charged me to diagnose the problem. Then they charged for parts and repairs, and then more parts and repairs when it still didn't work. ...and then it still didn't work. I kept bringing it in for them to get it right. After a few hot summer months of these repeated visits, they told me there was a leak they couldn't or wouldn't fix. That's fine, but they should have found that in the first diagnostic. So, they charged me several hundred dollars for a diagnostic that didn't identify the whole problem, and for parts and labor that didn't fix the problem. When I contacted the company, they told me they would look into it, and then didn't even have the decency to tell them they weren't going to do anything. No refund, no repairs, no communication. read more

Pretty basic here. I stop in for filters and DIY items. Get my car serviced for regular maintenance service such as oil change, alignment and brakes etc. I had them check out my sensor warning light "check engine" and they were unable to do much about it without access to the cars computerized warning system so they recommended I go to my dealership. Waiting room is rather minimal and unappealing. There are several stores and restaurants within walking distance including Dunking Donuts, a Billiards and nail salon across the street. Staff is friendly and helpful upon request. They usually have coupons and discounts for many of their services. read more

Never Again. Bridgewater Pepboys has it together but Edison does not. Two and a half hrs for an Oil change and no call back when car was ready. I was waiting while car was serviced and observed the dysfunctional customer service. The only knowledgeable Sales lady left to "pick up parts" , leaving a 3 day trainee at the desk way in over his head as the line backed up to the door. I should've gone back to the Dealer who offered a free 1st oil change since it was a new Jeep. My bad. I will not recommend this place to family, friends and patients. read more

I scheduled an appointment online for Oct 21 with the request for Oil Change and Check Rear Brakes. I came in at 3pm and Sean K took me in. He asked me what kind of oil change, I said synthetic, and he said they'll check the brakes. About 2 hours later I get a call that my car is ready. When I got to the counter, I asked Sean about the brakes. He said the brakes were fine, that's why I wasn't updated about it. I asked if he had a lining measurement. He shows me the work order (#2336205) that had everything that was checked, and on it said F+R brakes 6/32, F+R tires 6/32nd (note: I got an oil change on May 10 at that same location with the same car where I had the front brake pads replaced along with notes from that work order showing rear brakes and tires were low and needing replacement, so it's a bit troubling that today's checkup is everything noted as 6/32nd which means they rushed the job and didn't check anything, which is not a huge deal if it werent for my specific request to check my rear brakes). Now the next issue is the oil change, where I saw that I was charged for a synthetic 'package' which included a fuel system service (along with brake/battery/alignment check, but those were free). The fuel service showed up around $22 in the breakdown. I saw that this package cost $99 and then I asked Sean why he put in a full package that I didn't ask for and it would've been nice to have discussed with me before proceeding with a service I didn't ask for. Then he raises his voice saying its the same thing and he can't control the cost of oil, which I said Im not complaining about the oil, but the fuel service that wasn't asked for. He said the package is a 'manager special' and is the same price as the normal oil change, and the way he starts yelling, I just gave in and paid and left. However, the next day, I guess some doubt lingered so I called Pep Boys asking how much a synthetic oil change is for my car, and was told $79 (also note that my synthetic oil change on May 10 was $79). So now I'm pretty pissed that I was lied to, and I don't feel like going back for $20 especially knowing that their service advisor yells and I'll get nowhere. The last issue which is more alarming is I've been hearing a squeal from when I brake that started recently. I still hear the squeal, and it bothered me that they didn't really check my brakes. Today, I took my car in to a local shop and asked if they can check my rear brakes. The mechanic said its at 2/32nd and is in urgent need of being replaced. I said I had a personal appointment, took my car out, and plan to come back in 2 weeks (I guess the delay was in case Pep Boys reads this and has any interest in verifying my story in order to improve their shop's ability in addressing safety issues). To me, these issues are a bit troubling, considering I only came for an oil change and brake check. I can't imagine what kind of issues other people will be at their mercy for, with bigger car repairs. I do have to warn people to be very careful about this shop. It really leads me to believe that this kind of dishonesty and carelessness makes it hard to feel comfortable trusting them with my car. read more

I was recently in this pep boys because I need help with my problems. My problems included helping my buddy get his foot out of my rust hole. It's a long story but I'll shorten it up. My Rusty Jeep is very Rusty. I nick named it rusty. Anyway back on topic. So the employee named Matt who they called Oliver. Seems like a weird nick name but who am I to judge seemed to know enough on how to clean up rust. Helped me out and gave me everything I needed to fix that rusty hole. i have been coming to this location for over 20 years, but I reluctantly need to part ways. took my vehicle in for rear brakes. Needed to replace pads and rotors. I asked why on our last oil change they did not notice pad wear prior to damaging rotor and if it was checked. under 2k miles ago. They agreed it should have been checked. looked up last service and could not find anything relating to breaks. Attitude was just kinda, "too bad". Disappointing. Quoted $590 before tax for work. Not happy, but paid and left. Had a $40 coupon, so that was good. just for reference I called dealership later that day and asked for a quote for pads and rotors for rear breaks, quoted $572 with OEM parts...??? $18 more for aftermarket pads and rotors, now really not happy!! $40 coupon was good, but dealerships have coupons too. when I get oil change at dealership, they give me a detailed vehicle report. And probably would have avoided new rotors. not sure what has changed at this location, but they have lost my business. read more

Dishonest business, stay away at all costs. Went in for an electrical problem, dashboard lights kept going out. They claimed it was the alternator told me I would need a new one. Their fees are horrible, I was charge over $140 just for a 20 minute examination of my car, this before they even started working on my car! In total I was charged over $500 for a simple alternator, and later I found I was given a re-manufactured alternator, not a new one I was promised. No one bothered to tell me this. It took them 5 days to work on my car, ridiculously slow. Not only that, the alternator did not fix anything! Got the car home, same problem popped up again a few hours later. I had to have my car towed back, they kept it over the weekend. I called a few days later, they said it was fixed and I could come and pick it up. Turned the car on and drove it around the parking lot, no less than 20 seconds of driving and the dashboard lights went off again! Had to argue with the manager, they had the nerve to want to me several hundred dollars more to look at the car again, even though they had fixed nothing and I was already out over $500! Through-out this whole experience, I could never get a straight answer out of anyone. They would keep passing the buck onto the next guy, to protect their own skin. It's people like this that give this industry a bad name. Stay away from them for any car related services. I've told all my friends and family of my horrible experience with them. Doing some research online I see that most Pep boys have pretty bad records and complaint and complaint from customers. The techs here are very young and inexperienced. I went here for a simple mounting and balancing of 4 tires (2 different size tires front and back). The tech installed the tires incorrectly which lead to additional wear on one of the tires until I noticed the problem and returned for them to reinstall the tires. In the end I still had to replace the two front tires at my own expense. read more

I made an appointment online and when I arrived at pep boys they told me it would be another hour and a half before they can even put my car into a bay. This was for an oil change. I left and went somewhere else and they did my oil change in 20 minutes. I'll never go there again. (no matter which location you make the mistake of dealing with) they ARE consistent in hiring the least intelligent and the absolute angriest people in the labor pool. Tonight I had the pleasure of working with Donna. When I explained the part I wanted, she became angry and insistent that the part I wanted did not exist. Angry. This makes no sense. I'm at a parts store, asking for parts. We weren't even 10 words into our exchange. For normal people, this is not enough time to make a judgement about which emotion is needed for the situation. To move things along, I looked up the part on Advance Auto's website to give her a number to cross check, and viola! The part does, indeed, exist! My next impossible and unreasonable request was coolant. Oh Lordy, that hit a nerve also! Here's our dialogue: Me: Has the G12 coolant for VW changed numbers? PepBoy's employee: BELT! COOLANT? It's a belt! Alrighty then. I'll get that somewhere else. It's hard to avoid them, as they often have a part that no other store in the state has. My car is only 6 years old 36000 miles and I did not even hear any weird sound of the break. I did not trust them so I went to the other tire store who told me I only need to change the pad and costs only $79.99. I talked to my friend about this and they told me same BAD experience with Pep Boys. They don't just try to sell you things you don't need but the service takes much longer time than they tell you.
