Kristin Hunt was the agent I worked with, so be sure you ask for her. Kristin gave me a realistic outlook on job expectations and helped me avoid postings that were a waste of time. She also told me when I should apply for a position directly myself when the company was not one VanderHouwen worked with. Halfway through my contract job, Kristin immediately began helping me look for full-time roles to transition to while other recruiters in the market told me it was too early and to come back within 4-6 weeks of my contract's end date. Furthermore, she always gave me up to date information on the status of each job I applied to. I was never in the dark. She cares a lot about her customers and it shows through her actions. I wouldn't take the negative reviews here seriously. Work with VanderHouwen if you go and don't get impatient. Portland is tough and you are going to get many no's before you get a yes. Finished our conversation and was dismissed with a "we'll call you when we have an assignment for you." Her tone the entire time she was talking to me was disinterested, almost as if I was trash. Look lady, you were the first employer to respond to my application. I took a chance on you. Called three weeks later, as I had not heard anything, and a different woman answered the phone, claimed she would "pass my message on" to Danielle, and I would hear back soon. It's been 6 months and I have yet to hear anything. Don't waste your time here. Express is right down the street and they will treat you with dignity and respect, and you'll be working as soon as the next day.

They called me for a couple more opportunities that didn't work out for various reasons, but a month or so later, they got me another one-day gig at an office, which turned into two days. There was no one else in the office and a woman named Nicole who came to the front desk got incredibly defensive when I asked how long it usually takes her to come back; I was uncomfortable from the start. Had she spoken like an adult, things may have unfolded a little differently. I waited a few minutes and decided to leave because had I been late, no doubt that'd had been considered unprofessional, as I had another appointment afterward. Nicole gave me a nasty retort about the amount of time I'd have been there "anyway" with an unprofessional attitude, I felt like I was in high school again. When I ran into Vaughna (owner) in the hallway and let her know I was on my way out, she copped an attitude immediately and tried to make me feel guilty about her dog and proceeded to send me a passive-aggressive email afterward. There's probably a good reason why their office was completely empty-people don't appreciate being treated rudely by "professionals" having no respect for others' time.
